Alleged $600,000 Fraud: “I have never met him Emefiele before, I didn’t Give him Any Bribe For Contract – Witness Tells Court

A prosecution witness, Victor Onyejiuwa, on Friday, told the Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja that the alleged $600,000 he was asked to pay for the contract he executed for the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, was paid to the former apex bank Director of Information Technology, John Ayoh and not to the embattled ex-CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele.

Onyejiuwa who is the Managing Director of Resource Computer Limited, stated this while being cross examined by Emefiele’s lawyer , Mr Olalekan Ojo, SAN.

The witness who stated that all his communication with Ayoh was done via Whatsapp, noted that first bribe payment he made to Ayoh was $400,000, in Lagos and the second payment of $200,000 was made in Abuja.

Onyejiuwa also stated that he didn’t get any letter of authorization from the CBN management that he should pay bribe for the contract that was awarded to his company but that it was Ayoh that signed the award of the contract and the completion.

A tragic accident occurred on Saturday night in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, when a trailer lost control and collided with three mini-buses, resulting in the deaths of at least seven people.

Politics / Fg’s 35% Increment Is Mischievous, Living Wage Should Be N615k – NLC President by Roving1: 5:56pm On May 01
FG’s 35% Increment Is Mischievous, Living Wage Should Be N615k – NLC President

President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, has said that the 35 per cent pay rise of the federal government civil servants is mischievous as the living wage should be N615,000.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Wednesday, May 1, Ajaero said the last minimum wage of N30,000 expired on April 18.

Ajaero said;

“We should be in the regime of new minimum wage as of today. Discussions were supposed to have been concluded.

“The federal government through the national assembly legislated on it. But we saw that the discussion entered voice mail because the federal government refused to reconvene the meeting that was adjourned.

“I think the announcement now appears mischievous because there is no wage increase that government is announcing. For them to announce it now, it is an issue that we are worried about at the NLC and even at the TUC.

“Living wage is such that will, at least keep you alive. It is not a wage that will make you poor and poorer. It is not a wage that will make you borrow to go to work. It is not a wage that will lead you to be in the hospital everyday because of malnutrition. For that living wage, we have tried to look at N615,000.

“Let me give you a breakdown of how we arrived at that figure. We have housing and accommodation of N40,000. We asked for electricity of N20,000 — of course, that was before the current tariff increase. Nobody can spend this amount currently. We have a utility that is about N10,000. We looked at kerosene and gas that is about N25,000 to N35,000.

“We looked at food for a family of six, that is about N9,000 in a day. For 30 days, that is about N270,000. Look at medical, N50,000 provided there will be no surgery or whatever.

“For clothing, we looked at N20,000. For education, N50,000. I don’t know for those who tried to put their children in private school, they will not be able to cope with this amount. We also have sanitation of N10,000.

JUST IN: Nigeria Rises Five Places In 2023 Corruption Perception Index

Nigeria has ranked 145 out of 180 countries and scored 25 out of 100 points in the recently launched 2023 Corruption Perception Index, published by Transparency International Nigeria... CONTINUE READING

The 2023 CPI is the first index under the Presidency of Bola Tinubu.

This represents a rise five places above its previous ranking in the 2022 CPI, where Nigeria placed 150 out of 180 countries, and scored 24 of 100 points.

The CPI score indicates the perceived level of public sector corruption on a scale of 0 (representing highly corrupt), to 100 (representing least corrupt perception).

Nigeria had its lowest CPI score in 1996, scoring 6.90, and its highest ever being 28 in 2016, in the first year of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

Speaking during the official launch of the CPI in Abuja on Tuesday, the Executive Director of the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre, Ibrahim Musa Rafsanjani, said the scores showed that Nigeria still had a lot of work to do at the national and regional levels. Noting that the country’s score was below the Sub-Saharan African average of 33 points.

“The index reveals that Nigeria scored 25 out of 100 points in the 2023 Corruption Perception Index, compared to 24 points in the year 2022 CPI, while Nigeria ranks 145 out of 180 countries, compared to 150 on 2022 CPI results.

Nigeria’s score is low the sub-Saharan African average of 33 points. Most African countries show stagnation, ninety per cent of countries in Sub-Saharan Africa scored under 50.

“This shows that it is a problem that we have both in the country and at the regional level and that we have to wake up to ensure that we do everything possible to defeat corruption and corrupt practices. You can see many reasons why these are happening, political corruption is on the increase, and when you loot the nation, and you are rewarded with the appointment, you will continue to do business as usual. So, at both national and regional levels, we have a lot of work to do to create a conducive atmosphere where development can thrive, and where democracy and electoral transparency can happen”, he said.

Highlighting the weaknesses and the reasons why Nigeria’s position had scarcely changed, the Country Director of Accountability Lab Nigeria, Friday Odeh, noted judicial and electoral corruption, as well as corruption in the security sector, as some of the key weaknesses that the country needed to improve on.

“First, we have electoral corruption, which I think most of us are aware of. It is no longer news that the 2023 election dashed the hope of Nigerians, most especially those of the young population who were excited to come out to vote in 2023.

“But now we are not sure what will happen in the next elections. Still referencing the 2023 elections, the Nigerian Judiciary was expected to display independence and dispatch justice transparently, as well as in equity and fairness. However, different conflicting rulings by the different courts, have questioned the independence and integrity of the judiciary as an institution.

“The third weakness is the corruption in the security sector. The defence and security sector has accounted for 13.4% of the national budget. Over the years security budget has been the highest, if not the last three years across the years, which is about twice the sum of the next two sectors, talking about education which is 8.2% and infrastructure which is 5.7%.

The ICPC recovered N50bn from the humanitarian affairs ministry.

The money, which was about to be embezzled was recovered by the ICPC between July and August 2023 and paid into the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The fund which was meant for vulnerable citizens during the tenure of former Minister Sadiya Umar-Farouq was blocked during attempts to transfer it into private bank accounts and recovered by the ICPC under its former Chairman, Bolaji Owasanoye.

“President Tinubu, upon the appointment of the now suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Betta Edu, ordered the Accountant-General of the Federation to refund the money to the ministry as part of the Infrastructure Support Fund for the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to cushion the effect of the fuel subsidy removal.’’

“The refunded sum is part of the N44bn allegedly laundered in the National Social Investment Programme Agency and the N585m Edu authorised for disbursement.’’

“During the naira scarcity between late 2022 and 2023, the ICPC under Prof Owasanoye blocked and recovered the sum of N50bn from the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs.

“The first sum that was blocked and recovered was N32bn, but when the commission probed further, another N18bn was blocked and recovered from the ministry".

"The ICPC discovered that the money was meant for the vulnerable and the poor people in the country which the ministry under the former minister, Umar-Farouq, could not distribute due to the scarcity of currency during the naira redesign period."

“The money was paid into the coffers of the government between July and August 2023. Some officials in the ministry attempted to disburse the funds into private accounts during the time the former minister was no longer active in office and there was no new minister last year".

INCREDIBLE!! : “I Am Glad Tinubu Increased Fuel Pump Price” – Former President Buhari

Nigeria’s immediate past leader, Muhammadu Buhari, has said he is happy incumbent president Bola Tinubu increased the petrol pump price.

He said the decision would reduce the number of visitors he receives in his native Daura town in Katsina State.

Buhari said this on Sunday at an event organised by the Katsina Consultative Forum at the Presidential Banquet Hall of Government House, Katsina.

Speaking in the Hausa language, Buhari said he returned to Daura, and a lot of people kept visiting him, but when Tinubu increased the price of fuel, he rejoiced because he expected the visits to decline.

Nigeria Will Face Existential Challenges in 2024- Atiku Tell Tinubu

Former vice president Atiku Abubakar has warned that Nigeria will face existential challenges in 2024.

In his 2024 New Year Message, Atiku, the Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate in the 2019 and 2023 general elections, said time and season were created to take stock of realities and effect necessary amends.

He charged President Bola Tinubu-led administration to show a clear direction of its policy projections and desist from the subsisting behaviour of groping in the dark in 2024.

He lamented the current intensity of the trying times many families and businesses are going through, adding that an entirely different pathway could have been taken had the government been more competent with its policy prescriptions.

While he expressed gratitude to God and welcomed Nigerians to the new year, Atiku, admitting that the past year was challenging, said lessons learnt are what should prepare Nigerians for the future.

He said, “The rising cost of food items, goods and services, the malfunction in our national economy and the degenerating state of our national and community security are all existential challenges that we have to face squarely in the New Year.

“While many companies have closed their operations in Nigeria and moved their enterprise elsewhere with clearer policies and visions, the situation of life for Nigerians keeps getting direr.

“To walk back from these throes of adversities will require a well-thought vision of National Planning that will deliberately make the common people of Nigeria the centrepiece of our development.

“The Year 2024 is still new on its canvas, and so there is ample time for the current government to champion a pathway to addressing the acute hardship that Nigerians are going through.

He said on every foreign trip he had embarked on, his message to investors and other business people had been the same, that Nigeria is ready and open for business.

He vowed to fight every obstacle that impedes business competitiveness in Nigeria and that he would not hesitate to remove any clog hindering the path to making Nigeria a destination of choice for local and foreign investments.
