The Nigerian Air Force on Monday said its fighter jets struck Boko Haram new hideout about one nautical mile south of Tumbum Rego in northern Borno.
A statement from Air Force spokesman Group Captain Ayodele Famuyiwa said the NAF fighter jets and helicopter gunship assaulted the location in a coordinated day and night operation following Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR).He noted that the intelligence report showed that Boko Haram insurgents who attacked own Surface Forces at Kangarwa the night of 12 January 2017 had withdrawn to the said location.

He recalled that the NAF, of recent, has intensified aerial patrol over the entire operation in the North East, as well as offensive mission around the Green Belt region near Niger and Chad Republics.

Famuyiwa said the renewed effort is aimed at denying the remnants of the insurgents the opportunity to regroup and launch attack on own Surface Forces or people within the host communities.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed that it is probing the missing N500 million Safe School funds meant to rebuild the Government Girls School in Chibok in Borno state.The foundation for the school was laid some weeks to the presidential election in 2015 by former finance minister, Dr Ngozi Okonjo Iweala.

A petition of 27 December 2016 was sent to the EFCC Chair Ibrahim Mustafa Magu by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP).

This development was disclosed today by SERAP senior staff attorney Timothy Adewale.

“We have received confirmation from the EFCC that the body is looking into our petition. The EFCC has also expressed its determination to diligently investigate the allegation of the missing N500 million Safe School funds for Chibok girls, and sought additional information from SERAP,”Adewale said.

SERAP had in its petition urged the EFCC to “invite for questioning, and name and shame anyone suspected to be involved in the alleged diversion, including the contractors allegedly handling the project.”

“The allegation that N500m has been lost to corruption has resulted in denying the girls access to education, and shows the failure of the former President Goodluck Jonathan government to live up to Nigeria’s commitments under the global Safe School Declaration.”

“SERAP believes that the diversion of the funds will expose the school to attacks in the future. This is a fundamental breach of the country’s obligations including guarantees of non-repetition, which contribute to prevention and deterrence of future attacks.”

“SERAP urges the EFCC to work with the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to set up a mechanism to monitor government’s spending of the safe school funds in order to ensure that the funds are spent exactly to prevent and deter future attacks, and to allow the girls to go back to school as soon as possible.”

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Abayomi Gabriel Olonisakin has hosted some ECOWAS CDS's at the Defence Headquarters, (DHQ) Abuja as part of efforts to mitigate the political impasse in Gambia following the refusal of President Yahya Jammeh to hand over power to the president elect, Adama Barrow after he lost the December 1 2016 election.While welcoming the participants and ECOWAS officials to DHQ, General Olonisakin expressed the readiness of regional leaders and military commanders to continue the pursuit of dialogue with the political leaders of Gambia and ensure peaceful transition of power in accordance with the Gambian's constitution and the peoples will.

According to reports, Isah was carrying out his daily job when a fire engulfed and start burning, he was unlucky to escape on time as the fire has done some damages to his body. President of Sam Zuga Foundation, Bishop Sam Zuga, on Thursday, performed a water ministration in Minna, the Niger state capital, and wonders happened.

A total of 1498 recruits and 331 operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) passed out today in a combined passing out parade from the Ground Training Centre (GTC) NAF Base Kaduna, having successfully completed the 6 months Basic Military Training Course 36/2017.

It is pertinent to note that this is the first time that EFCC operatives were trained by the NAF. The training of EFCC operatives by the current NAF leadership is to foster inter-agencies synergy between the two security agencies with a view to effectively respond to the emerging security threats in the country.

Addressing the passing out recruits, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar urged the NAF personnel to observe the tenet of military discipline and NAF core values in the discharge of their duties.

Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja on January 11, 2017 adjourned the trial of the former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Olisa Metuh to February 20-24, 2017 on grounds of ill-health.

The trial was initially slated for yesterday January 10 for continuation of defence, but had to be adjourned to today following an application by Metuh’s counsel, Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN, that the former PDP spokesperson was sick and could not make it to court.
At the sitting, Ikpeazu told the court that Metuh was rushed to the National Hospital in Abuja on Sunday, January 8, 2017 after he collapsed during a church service. He pleaded for a short adjournment to enable the defence present necessary report to back up its claim.

Counsel to EFCC, Sylvanus Tahir, had opposed the application relying on Section 354(2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015, which provides that the state of health of the accused person, not supported by a medical report, do not constitute a reasonable ground for an adjournment.
The court, notwithstanding the opposition by the prosecution, obliged the defence with the adjournment.

At today’s proceeding, Emeka Etiaba, SAN, representing the first defendant (Metuh) presented to the court a copy of the medical report which discloses details of the alleged ailment for which Metuh was admitted.

Again, Etiaba prayed the court to further adjourn the matter to enable his client adequate time to recover and stand his trial.

Counsel for the second defendant, Destra Investment Limited, Tochukwu Onwugbufor (SAN), also supported the application.

Onwugbufor held that it was proper for the court to adjourn the matter as the trial cannot proceed without the presence of the accused person. He, therefore, prayed the court to give a three week adjournment to enable the first defendant treat himself.

Tahir, while responding, said he had no reason to object to the adjournment and wished the first defendant a speedy recovery.

Justice Abang after listening to the submissions of both counsel said that he was satisfied with the medical report and adjourned the case.

Metuh and his company, Destra Investment Limited, are being prosecuted on a 7-count of fraud to the tune of N400million which he allegedly received from the Office of the National Security Adviser in 2014 without justification.

The money was said to have been released to Metuh and his firm by the immediate past NSA, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), from about $2.1bn allegedly earmarked by the then President Goodluck Jonathan administration for the purchase of arms to fight insurgency in the North-East.

Sahara Reporters publisher Omoyele Sowore has been released from detention hours after he was arrested following a criminal defamation petition filed by fellow journalist, Lekan Fatodu. Read the press statement released by the state police command Public Relations officer, Dolapo Badmus below..

Today, 11/1/2017 at about 15:39hrs, a distress call was received by the Lagos State Police Command that Mr Omoyele Sowore - Publisher of Sahara Reporters was being attacked by suspected hoodlums around Isaac John street, GRA ikeja.

The police swiftly responded, and upon arrival at the scene contrary to the report that a robbery attack was taking place, the police met the duo of Mr Omoyele Sowore and Mr Lekan Fatodu engaged in a brawl/altercation. With a view to ascertaining what led to the false alarm of a robbery, both parties were taken before the Commissioner of Police.

In the course of police intervention, it was found out that the brawl is in connection with an earlier complaint of alleged threat to life, defamation of character and blackmail made by Lekan against Omoyele. Both parties were subsequently referred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Panti where the case has been under investigation.

24-year-old Abass Ope accused of stealing his former boss’s car, TVs and a pet dog, has told police investigators that the Christmas needs of his siblings pushed him into the stealing. .

The indigene of Ogun State, was arrested at the Ojuelegba area, on Boxing Day, while trying to sell off his boss’s Toyota Avensis 2013, for N2m. Arrested along with him were three of his friends: Balogun Oluwaseun (23); Sanni Azeez (23) and Stephen Ewiele (22).Ope had during Christmas period raided his former boss’s Magodo home while the latter and his family were holidaying in Delta State, with an accomplice, to move a 100 inch LCD TV, a 42 inch LCD TV, a dog, a suitcase, two DSTV decoders, and a Toyota Avensis. .
.
On hearing about his missing properties, the owner of the house called Mr. Ope several times but the suspect denied knowledge of the incident, forcing his boss to cut short his holiday with his family, to report the incident at Magodo Police Station.

Speaking, Ope said he took the car because he had no money to take care of himself and his younger ones. “They had no clothes, no shoes and this is Yuletide season. They looked up to me to take care of these expenses.

It was about three months now that I left Mr. Ekinodo (his former boss). I had worked for him for four years before leaving him on August, 2016. I left because he had a little challenge and things were pretty tough for him."

Ope described his former employer as “very nice boss to work with,” adding that he enrolled him into university but he couldn’t continue his education after leaving him. .

Ekinodo Ifoghale said he was in shock because he treated Ope as a son. He said: “Apart from my wife, he was the closest person to me. This is a guy that did my shopping for me. Even, before I buy anything for myself, I bought for him first."
