Instagram user, Nylah shared this photo of an alleged robber whom she said came to her office disguised as a NEPA official only to steal her mobile phones when he lured her outside the building. Read what she wrote below;

"I am not one to do this or share false information, but since this happened to me I am going to share it. This criminal walked into my office under the pretense of being a Nepa official yes I asked for identification, and he said it was in his truck that they were doing some work and noticed that the building next door had wires hanging into ours
and he needed to verify the connection. He had a screwdriver and folded wires in his hand. Stole my phone from my desk after luring me out. He kept insisting we should turn off the generator because he suspected we had CCTV (thankfully I didn't) guys be on the look out and don't doubt your instincts because I did. Too many lazy, hungry people out there. If he needed something to eat, I would have fed him from the restaurant easy. Lesson learned."

Politics / Minister Urges Media To Shun Disinformation, Fake News. by RoyalMail: 5:45pm On Feb 03, 2017
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has urged the media to eschew disinformation and fake news, saying the phenomenon, if left unchecked, could damage the credibility of the media and endanger the country's peace and security.

The Minister made the call in Abuja on Friday when he paid a courtesy visit to the headquarters of Daar Communications Plc. owners of the African Independent Television (AIT) and Raypower radio station.

“The country today is under the siege of disinformation and fake news. Unfortunately this dangerous trend, if not checked by the media - especially the traditional media - is capable of tearing the fabric of the society and bringing the country to its knees,” he said.

Alhaji Mohammed said that to make matters worse, a section of the traditional media often amplifies the disinformation and the fake news being spread on the Social Media.

He noted that in spite of the incursion of the Social Media, the traditional media remains the most credible platform, hence it should not join forces with the purveyors of falsehood.

“My greatest problem is with the traditional media, because most people will probably say Social Media is what it is. But when the traditional media also latches on the same fake news and the same disinformation, then I begin to get worried for many reasons. Number one, it affects the credibility of the media itself and once the media is no longer believed, once the media loses its credibility, then it has serious consequences for the media and the society as a whole,” the Minister said.

Alhaji Mohammed recalled the role that disinformation, fake news and hate speeches played in the 1994 genocide in Rwanda in which over 800,000 people were killed, and urged the media to draw some lessons from that unfortunate development.

He expressed concern that in the past few weeks, the media was saturated with false news on the health of the President, and that even when the government and the presidency promptly clarified that the President is hale and hearty, some people did not believe them because of the lies they have read in the Social Media.

“What happened in the last couple of weeks is quite worrisome. Mr. President left for a vacation. When he was leaving, he transmitted the necessary letter to the National Assembly on who was going to act. He said during his vacation, he will also use the opportunity to carry out his routine medical check-up. Within 12 hours of leaving the country, the news was that he had died, and when that was not sustainable, they said he was critically ill.

''Some even went on to say that he was actually flown out of the country in an ambulance, when the whole world saw when he was leaving and it was televised. For a week or so all we heard was this dangerous disinformation,” the Minister said.

In his remarks, the Executive Chairman of Daar Communications Plc. Chief Raymond Paul Dokpesi, said the emergence of fake news is a global phenomenon, but noted that the Media Group has been absolutely committed to upholding the highest standard of journalism.

Celebrities / Maje Ayida Hires British Lawyers To Sue Toke Makinwa Over ‘fabricated’ Book. by RoyalMail: 11:11am On Feb 03, 2017
Following the release of a tell-all memoir documenting her relationship with Maje Ayida, Nigerian media personality Toke Makinwa, has been asked to stop the sales of the book and all forms of promotional activities.

The request was made of Makinwa by Maje Ayida, who’s lawyers have also sent the on-air-personality, a “letter of demand.”

Makinwa’s book, On Becoming, had detailed her account of her relationship/marriage to Ayida, a fitness expert.

In the book, the television personality accused Ayida of giving her sexually transmitted diseases, being a serial cheat and committing adultery.
The legal documents describe the book as nothing but “exaggerated fabrication”.

The book which was published November 27, 2016, by Kachifo Limited, was said to contain “defamatory words”.

TheCable Lifestyle has learned that Maje Ayida has hired law firms in both the United Kingdom and Nigeria to handle the case.

They are Carter-Ruck, a leading defamation law firm in the UK to top figures like Simon Cowell, Elton John and Chelsea FC while Kemi Pinheiro (SAN) of Pineiro LP is heading the legal front in Nigeria.

THE BONE OF CONTENTION

According to the letter of demand sent to Makinwa, her estranged husband was said to have “requested legal separation” from her “within 6 months” of their marriage in January 2014 — “when it became clear that the marriage was breaking down”.

Makinwa was alleged to have signed a legal separation agreement in July 2014, TheCable Lifestyle was informed.

The letter said it was well documented that Makinwa and Ayida had agreed to separate by July 2014, which the book failed to record.

“The book misleadingly describes the circumstances at the time,” the letter read.

Pinheiro LP, the Nigerian law firm, said it was untrue that Maje had given her an “STI in the past or at any stage in their relationship.”

The law firm also noted that it was “highly misleading” for the book to allege that Maje “did not financially contribute adequately” to the marriage.

“The publicity sought by you has been relentless, and limitless,” said Adebowale Kamoru in the letter of demand, on behalf of Pinheiro LP.

EFFECT OF BOOK ON MAJE’S CAREER

The law firm further noted that the publication has brought “public ridicule” on Maje, noting that his reputation has been “assaulted, injured and damaged.”

“His professional integrity as one of the leading health and wellness practitioners in Nigeria, and his professional credibility built over the years through dedicated hard work have been besmirched”, the letter said.

According to the law firm, Makinwa’s representation of Ayida in the book was “not a true reflection of who he is, his character and his background.”

DEMANDS OF AYIDA

Maje Ayida, through his lawyers, has, among other things, informed Makinwa to retrieve the already-sold books and stop all forms of distribution, TheCable Lifestyle understands.

The letter mandated Makinwa to “withdraw from circulation all copies of the book and take immediate steps to call in all copies of the book already distributed and deliver up same at the place to be agreed upon by our client for destruction.”

It further said a failure by the popular celebrity to “retract” the “published words” and tender a full page unreserved apology to Maje Ayida in three national dailies “will result in the commencement of legal action.”

Makinwa was also advised to “take immediate steps” to stop the distribution of the books on Amazon, iTunes and all forms of promotion on her social media accounts.

She was given seven days upon receipt of the letter to comply with the demands or they’d be forced to seek legal redress.

The warning letter was said to have been delivered to Makinwa on Monday, December 23, 2016.

Makinwa is set to hold a book reading in Ghana on Friday, February 3.

It can’t be immediately confirmed whether she received the letter of demand.

Officers of the Lagos state Police Rapid Response Squad RRS, arrested a man for dehumanizing an employee of his by tying his hands and legs to the back and transporting him to Abuja on Hilux.‎ What a heartless man. Read the full story below..

The employer, Engineer Wole Odunuga, was arrested after officers of Metro Police chased his vehicle, a white Toyota Hilux Van with the registration number SMK 707 CA, from Ketu/Ojota Flyover to 7 – Up before Toll gate.

The officer had on Wednesday night at around 7:20 p.m. stopped the vehicle but the lone occupant defied the police order and sped off.

After forcing the vehicle to a stop around 7 – Up, the officer were shocked to see a man, later identified as Daniel Dabis, with his legs and hands tied to his back and put at the back of the Hilux.

During preliminary investigation, the driver of the vehicle claimed the victim stole his money from his Abuja home before he absconded to Lagos, so he was transporting him back to Abuja before he was stopped.

He stated “I've been searching for him all over places, which took me to his village in Plateau state. It was one of his friends that told me he was in Lagos where he was hiding. Precisely, I was hinted he was staying at Mile 12 Market, Ketu.

I drove down from Abuja and I met him at Mile 12 Market, Ketu, where I picked him up”.

He continued; “initially, I had taken him down to Ketu Divisional Police Station, Lagos, to incident the matter, but the officers at the station declined to detain him there. So, I had no option than to take him back to Abuja”.

Odunuga, a resident of Pent City Estate, Abuja, added: “that was what I was trying to do before I was accosted by the police team on routine Patrol under the Ketu/Ojota flyover",

But according to Daniel Dabis, “what I took from him were a ladder and a wheel barrow. He is estimating the cost of the wheel barrow at N110,000 and the ladder, N90,000, that is all I took from him”.

He has because of that tied my legs and hands to my back. His plans was to drive me to Abuja, if not for the officers, he would have killed me and dumped my body at the road side”

Politics / Police Shut Ondo House Of Assembly (video) by RoyalMail: 2:54pm On Jan 30, 2017
The crisis rocking the Ondo State House of Assembly continues on Monday morning as police shut the Assembly premises.

This was to prevent a fracas which would have occurred at the Assembly between factions loyal to Hon. Malachi Coker and Hon. Jumoke Akindele who are laying claim to the speakership seat.Coker’s faction impeached Akindele last Friday evening but the woman insisted that she remain the speaker because her removal did not meet the constitutional requirement.

The Nation learnt gathered that the legislators in Coker’s camp gained entrance to the Assembly premises as early as 6:00 a.m.? on Monday

Coker immediately sat on the speaker’s seat in readiness for the day’s plenary.

The Akindele’s faction later stormed the Assembly and the embattled speaker personally challenged Coker that he has no right to sit on the speaker’s seat.

But Coker told her she is no longer the Assembly speaker because she had been impeached.

This caused altercation between the two factions.

Police operatives led by the state Commissioner of Police, Mrs. Hilda Ibifuro-Harrison, who were already at the Assembly premises to prevent breakdown of law and order, stormed the House chamber and ordered the lawmakers including the workers to leave the place immediately.

Politics / FG Will Not Tolerate Destruction Of National Monuments - Minister by RoyalMail: 2:23pm On Jan 30, 2017
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has said the Federal Government will not tolerate the destruction of national monuments anywhere in the country for whatever reason.

The Minister gave the assurance when he visited the site of a national monument - the 190-year-old Brazilian style building in Lagos - on Sunday.

The building, which was acquired and gazetted as a national monument by the Federal Government in 1956, was destroyed by some developers. The Federal Government and the developers have since instituted cases in court over the property.

''Because they wanted to develop this place, they have broken so many laws. Fortunately, this is a country of laws and we are ready to meet them in court and one thing I can assure you is that nobody can benefit from his own crime.

''I want to assure you that we will challenge them in court and we are going to get our reliefs and we will restore this building to its
formal glory. We have the picture, we will rebuild it,'' he said.

Alhaji Mohammed said the monument, built by returnee slaves from Brazil, is unique because it chronicled the historical, cultural and
social relationship between Nigeria and Brazil ''It is like a living monument of our (slave trade) past. It was a
monument that exhibited the Brazilian architecture at that time, which is rare to come by anywhere in the world. It is a remembrance of what our ancestors went through in slavery and how they triumphed, came back and showed that they were well-to-do. The important thing is that a people without history will perish very fast. This building was worth billions of dollars because it symbolised our past.

''No amount of skyscrapers can replace this history and all important monument that has been demolished, and I want to assure you that
nobody can profit from his crime. You cannot go to court now and say that because the structure has been destroyed, the land should go back to the owner.

''This is why I have come here with the (Lagos State) Commissioner of Police, who has been quite helpful. I want to assure Nigerians that
we are going to pursue whoever has destroyed this place. It may take time, but the hand of the law is long and the wheel of justice grinds slowly but surely,'' he said.

Politics / Boko Haram: Babies Among Suicide Bombers by RoyalMail: 5:23am On Jan 28, 2017
The Defence Headquarters says female suicide bombers in the North East are now evading detection from security operatives by carrying babies on their back, that ordinarily passes them for innocent nursing mothers.

The Acting Director Defence information, Brig.- Gen. Rabe Abubakar, said in a statement in Abuja on Friday that the attention of the DHQ had been drawn to the new tactic.
Abubakar said the method was being adopted by female suicide bombers in the North East.

According to him, the two recent suicide bomb attacks in Madagali, Adamawa State are instructive in this regard.

“The DHQ wishes to seize this opportunity to appeal to members of the public to be patient and cooperate with the military and other security agencies while carrying out thorough security search and checks as the essence is to nip in the bud the murderous intention of the Boko Haram suicide bombers.

“The DHQ wishes to state further that the usual traffic “go-slow” at military and security check points as a result of rigorous security checks are not meant to cause public discomfort or a deliberate action to induce traffic disruptions on our roads, but an effort put in place towards protecting the lives and properties of our innocent citizens.

“Members of the public are, therefore, urged to always volunteer useful information to the military and other security agencies that would assist in exposing Boko Haram and their evil machinations in our society and to make our communities safe and secure for all to live,” he said.

Politics / Power Outage: Ministers, Workers Desert Fed. Secretariat by RoyalMail: 5:16am On Jan 28, 2017
Workers at the Federal Secretariat Complex, Abuja have deserted their offices as the Electricity Distribution Company cut- off power supply.

Most of the offices in the complex were closed.

The complex which host most ministries, including Education, Health, Science and Technology, Women Affairs as well as Youth and Sports had no electricity supply.
Some of the workers told NAN that the blackout had been on for some weeks due to the inability of the ministries to pay their outstanding electricity bills.

They said the situation has impacted negatively on productivity, reduced office working hours, and forced workers to loiter the complex, late resumption and early closure of work.

A staff of the Ministry of Health, who gave his name simply as Mr Tunde, described the cutting off of electricity supply as an embarrassment.

He urged the Federal Government to investigate and punish the persons responsible for the situation.

“It is so unfortunate and an embarrassing that we have been without power supply because of non-payment of electricity bills. Meanwhile, the government is the one canvassing for the payment of utility bill in every sector.

“The government needs to really look at this matter, investigate and prosecute whoever that is saddled with the responsibility of ensuring the payment of bills,’’ he said.

According to him, we cannot continue this way, no electricity to pump water for the toilets everywhere smells.

Malam Umar Mohammed, another staff in the Secretariat, said the power supply had affected the productivity of workers, as most civil servants in the secretariat are unable to work effectively.

“Most workers cannot work and put in their best as they are used to, because even though my ministry and some others had resulted to the use of generators for power supply.

“We do not have the money to run it throughout the working hours; it has to be within a stipulated time.

“This has frustrated the efforts of workers, who are ready to work, but are unable to do so because of power supply.

Similarly, Musa Tukur, said workers now resume late to work and leave early due to inadequate electricity supply.

“Most workers just come to show face and register their names that they came to work, and immediately they do so, they loiter around the complex, then disappear for the day,’’ he lamented.

On her own part, Mrs Mary Olushola appealed to the ministries involved to expedite action in resolving the issue of power supply as it had contributed immensely to her health challenges.

“Even though I know that exercise is good for one’s health, but it is not easy climbing up and down the staircase to the 11th floor all the time at my age and health challenges.’’

According to her, the electricity supply had to be quickly revived as it had affected the use of elevators, paralysed official activities and the input of workers, which she said by extension would affect the nation as a whole.

Also, a source, who pleaded anonymity disclosed that workers in the secretariat now alternate among colleagues when to come for work due to the power outage.

“Due to the power outage, workers now rotate and liaise among themselves when to come to work and days they should take off to reduce cost of transportation and redundancy.’’

When NAN visited the Maintenance Unit of the Federal Ministry of Health, the Director-General Services directed his PA to inform the reporter that he was not authorized to speak with the media.

Similarly, an undisclosed source at the Federal Ministry of Education also directed the reporter to the Electricity Distribution Company for details on the power outage at the secretariat.

Politics / Federal Lands: Lagos State Govt Floors Federal Government At Supreme Court by RoyalMail: 3:37pm On Jan 27, 2017
The Supreme Court on Friday struck out a suit filed by the Federal Government seeking an order wresting the control and management of its land in Lagos State from the state government.

The unanimous judgement was delivered by a five-man panel of the Supreme Court led by Justice Olabode Rhodes-Vivour. In the judgement, the Supreme Court struck out the Federal Government’s suit after upholding the preliminary objection filed by the Lagos Government to challenge the competence of the suit.

Justice Dattijo Muhammad, who read the apex court’s lead ruling, agreed with the Lagos State Government that the court lacked the power to exercise its “original jurisdiction” in the suit because the Federal Government had “transferred its title in the land to others”.’

The dispute between the federal and Lagos State governments was about “general control and management of federal land within Lagos State particularly the re-issuance of certificates of occupancy, granting consent or exercising rights of ownership.”

A video showing the moment an elderly woman was brutally beaten and stoned by youths of the Apostolic Gospel Church on accusation of witchcraft has emerged.

According to the story told by a Facebook user, Sam Itauma, the church members claim that while they were having their youth vigil a bird fell into the Apostolic Gospel Church then turned into this old woman.

In the video which is painful to watch, the woman is surrounded by church members who scream at her and call her a witch while whipping her. One of them can be heard asking her, "What did you come here to do? Who sent you here?"

As the woman tried to escape, she was stopped by the congregation. At some point they began to rebuke her and started chanting in unison, calling down the fire of the holyghost to burn her. The height of it all was when a church member threw a stone at her when she tried to escape.
