Commercial bank customers on Friday decried lack of money in many Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent, who visited some banks in the city, also observed long queues in most of the banks. Some of the banks visited were: United Bank for Africa (UBA), First Bank of Nigeria Plc (FBN), Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB), Area 3; Ecobank, Gwarinpa and Zenith Bank in Dutse.

Other banks visited were: Diamond Bank, Stanbic IBTC, Sterling Bank, First City Monument Bank and Access Bank, all in Garki.

A customer at the First Bank, Area 3, Mrs Esther Uche, said she had been waiting under the sun for more than 20 minutes and had not been able to withdraw her money.

Uche said, “The bank management is aware of the usual chaos during every festivity and ought to have made adequate provision, especially regarding availability of funds in ATMs.’’

A customer at the GTB, Mr Gabriel Okwoche, said that it was unfortunate that the banks had not been meeting customers’ demands.

Okwoche said he did not expect the queue at the bank, as many Nigerians were complaining the economy was bad and no money in circulation.

At the UBA, a customer, Miss Joy Edoh, told NAN that she had been to about four banks’ ATMS in Garki; and that there was no money in the machines.

Edoh said at the Access Bank in Garki, she and other customers waited for 30minutes and when it got to her turn, the machine stopped dispensing cash.

“I am happy that the UBA ATMs are all working and I am sure to get money in the next five minutes,’’ she said.

At the Union Bank, it was observed that no customer was seen at the ATM, as it was not dispensing cash.

Meanwhile, a visit to Diamond Bank, showed that many customers were seen in the banking hall and there was a long queue of customers at the ATM.

NAN reports that there were long queues at the Ecobank ATM in Gwarinpa, with some already frustrated customers leaving the bank premises.

A customer, Mr John Johnson, said the management of the various banks and CBN should do something about the queues at the banks.

“Today is 23 and we have all the remaining days of the holiday to contend with and we are already experiencing insufficient funds.’’

“I wonder what we will face during the holidays. I implore the management of all the banks to ensure that the ATMs are loaded with cash.

“If this is not done, customers are bound to suffer during this Christmas celebration,’’ Johnson said.

Another customer at Ecobank, Mr Emmanuel Adejo, said he was at the bank’s head office in Wuse 2 but could not withdraw.

According to Adejo, a bank official said the bank had insufficient funds as CBN did not release money to the bank.

A customer at Zenith Bank in Dutse, Miss Talatu Abraham, said she was impressed that most ATMs at the bank were dispensing cash.

Abraham said that the bank was the only bank within the Dutse Alhaji axis and was always crowded due to that fact (dispensing).

She commended the bank for ensuring most if its ATMs were dispensing money to customers.

NAN reports that most officials of banks asked about efforts being made to ensure sufficient funds for customers during the festivity refused to comment.

An official of the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (DISCO), Mr Francis Idoko, was on Friday beaten by residents of a building on Fish Pond St. Muwo Ojo, Lagos, for disconnecting their line.

The residents, who insisted that the official should reconnect them, after raining blows on him, also let loose a dog, which attacked Idoko. The DISCO official alleged that the building’s prepaid metre was illegally connected.

“The house has a prepaid metre but the residents did not go through the right channel,’’ Idoko said.

“We are on routine assignment and in the process, we came across the building; worked there and continue with other buildings on the street.

“It was while in the adjourning street, that one of the residents approached me and requested to know why the house was disconnected.

“I followed him to the house and he locked the gate against me,’’ he said.

In her response, Mrs Afoke Oghenetaga, whose dog attacked the victim, said that the residents contributed in buying the metres.

“Many of us, few days ago recharged with as much as N6,000 to enable us enjoy the Christmas and the New Year holidays; only for us to be cut off by this man,’’ Oghenetaga said.

According to her, the dog was not on chain and only acted in favour of the residents it was familiar with.

She said the dog attacked the only stranger among them, adding that that person happened to be Francis.

On arrival at the scene, the DISCO Supervisor, in charge of the area, Mr Kingsely Amadi, who was contacted on phone, said that all those involved in the mayhem would be brought to book.

“DISCO has been advising customers to formalise their metres to avoid embarrassment that can result to such chaotic situation.

“We are bent in serving our customers to the best of our ability but they too should play their roles to make things work,’’ he said.

PoliticsFreed Chibok Girls To Celebrate Christmas With Their Families by RoyalMail(op): 9:30pm On Dec 23, 2016
A group of 21 Chibok schoolgirls freed by Boko Haram militants in October after two-and-a-half years in captivity in northeastern Nigeria were celebrating a "miracle" on Friday as the girls prepared to return to their families for Christmas.

The girls were released after Switzerland and the International Red Cross brokered a deal with the Islamist fighters and have been held in a secret location in the capital Abuja for assessment and debriefing by the Nigerian government. But the freed girls are being taken back to Chibok in Borno state to spend Christmas and New Year with their families, going home for the first time since being seized from their school, several of their relatives.

The kidnapping of more than 200 schoolgirls from Chibok in April 2014 sparked global outrage and prompted global figures, including U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama and a list of celebrities, to support a campaign #BringBackOurGirls.

One of the girls, Asabe Goni, described her release as a "miracle" and, in the first interview by one of the 21 girls to international media, said she was happy to be going home.

"I had given up hope of ever going home," Goni, 22, said by phone from the city of Yola where the 21 girls stayed overnight before setting off to Chibok with two other freed girls and state officials on Friday.

Dancing and singing in her home in Chibok, Goni's grandmother Ngobiko Mutar could not contain her joy as the family prepared for her arrival.

"I didn't think I would ever see her again," Mutar said, while Goni's young relatives baked a cake to welcome her home.

The girls were expected to return to Abuja in the New Year to continue a "restoration process", according to government sources.

They will be joined in Chibok by two other girls abducted from the school in April 2014 who were rescued earlier this year. This includes Amina Ali, the first of the missing girls to be found, who was located in a forest with a baby and a man claiming to be her husband in May.

Her discovery put the disappearance of the girls back into world headlines and President Muhammadu Buhari has pledged to ensure the release of the remaining girls in captivity.

Nigerian authorities are involved in negotiations aimed at securing the release of more of the girls, the president's spokesman said on Thursday on comments posted on Twitter.

Goni said the Chibok girls who were not released wept when the group of 21 was freed, but they were consoled by Boko Haram militants and told that they would go home one day.

The attention of the Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki has been drawn to a statement issued today to the media by the Department of State Services (DSS) in which the Department raised allegations against Mr. Ugochinyere Ikenga, an aide to the Senate President.

Though the DSS has not officially informed the Senate President of the allegations against Ikenga but Dr. Saraki having read the statement now circulating online will want to make it clear that he will never condone any action by any of his aides which threatens the peace of the country or is against the provisions of the law.

Dr. Saraki hereby calls on the DSS to properly investigate the allegations against Mr. Ikenga and if he is found to have acted against the law, then the law should take its natural course.

Mrs. Comfort Alaba

Some gunmen have abducted a female customs official, Mrs. Comfort Alaba, after attacking a house in the FESTAC Town area of Lagos State.

The assailants reportedly whisked away 50-year-old Comfort around 8pm on Tuesday while she was visiting her children on 22 Road, FESTAC Town.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the men ordered the children not to shout, threatening to shoot them dead if they did, as they made away with their mother in her black Murano Jeep.

The case was said to have been reported at the FESTAC Police Division.

Our correspondent gathered that Comfort recently separated from her husband and had left her home on 11 Road, A Close, for her husband’s place, to visit her children when the incident happened.

Her daughter, Faith, who spoke with our correspondent, said the assailants were unmasked.

She said, “My mum came to visit us. We were in her Jeep, playing with her. She had spent about 20 minutes with us and was preparing to leave.

“As I hugged her goodbye, and my sister stepped out of her vehicle, two guys walked up to her and took control of the car. As I was about to shout, one of them put a gun to my abdomen and said if I shouted he would kill me.

“I suddenly heard a gunshot, and before I knew it, they had zoomed off with her. They wore black clothes. They didn’t say anything to us except when they threatened me. They were two in number.”

Our correspondent made efforts to speak with the victim’s husband, but the daughter said he was unavailable as he had gone to the police headquarters over the matter

Faith appealed to the kidnappers to release her mother, saying she had not recovered from the shock of the attack.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the incident, adding that investigations were ongoing.

FamilyNigerian Woman, 40, Dies In Spain - (pictured) by RoyalMail(op):
A Nigerian woman, said to be about 40 years old, was dead for several days in Palma, capital of Majorca, Spain before her body was discovered.

Her three children spent days next to her body – unaware that she had died – with no food or water before being rescued by police.

The youngsters – aged five, 10 and 11 – told passers-by they couldn’t understand what was wrong with their mother when they went looking for help in the street because she was in bed and ‘wouldn’t open her eyes.’

They were described as being barely dressed when they were found.

The youngest child fainted as he was being assisted by neighbours who realised they were in trouble and gave them juice and water and something to eat.

The first person they came across was a gardener working in a park.

Police found their mum’s body after entering into their home in the Majorcan capital Palma.

They made the gruesome discovery just after midday on Tuesday.

The news was reported by Spanish journalist Nieves Salinas. A post-mortem is expected to confirm the unnamed woman, a Nigerian immigrant, died of natural causes

The children, two boys and a girl, are believed to have spent more than 24 hours with their mum’s corpse, although they are understood to have told the gardener they had not eaten for three days.

A post-mortem is expected to confirm the unnamed woman, a Nigerian immigrant, died of natural causes.

The youngsters were taken to hospital for a check-up before being taken into local authority care after the authorities were unable to find any trace of their father.

The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode has reiterated the State Government committment to continue to improve the development of children in the State, while also commending parents for giving their children necessary guidance towards the right path.

The Governor disclosed this today at the Lagos House, Alausa, Ikeja, during the annual Children's Party organised by the State government for children of public servants in the State to celebrate the end of the year.

In his words, “We are happy to see our children grow up, our intention is beyond giving them good education, but to also give them good recreation activities that would make them good successors and great leaders of the future.”

He assured that the end of the year party which brings thousands of children together to have fun during the yuletide would not only be sustained but would be bigger and better in subsequent editions.

Speaking earlier, the Wife of the Governor, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, urged the children to develop good character and grow up as responsible citizens, as doing so would not only make them better individuals but also open many opportunities for them in future.

She charged them to take their education seriously, as hard work and academic excellence remained the most reliable stepping stone to success and a way to also secure a comfortable place for them in the society.

According to her, “You all are beautiful children of destiny, I wish every one of you merry Christmas and a happy New Year in advance. I want you all to grow up as good children. Always listen to your parents, be of good behaviour, respect the elders, do not join bad gangs and always pray to God to guide and direct you at all times.”

While commending the parents for a job well done in taking care of the children, the First Lady charged them and other privileged individuals in the society to remember to extend a hand of love to the less privileged not only at this period but always.

TravelNigerian Airports Ready For Christmas - FAAN by RoyalMail(op): 11:58pm On Dec 20, 2016
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has assured members of the public, especially passengers and airline operators of hitch-free movement of passengers and cargo during the forthcoming Christmas.

A statement by FAAN on Tuesday in Abuja said necessary operational and security measures have been put in place at all airports across the country. The statement was signed by the Acting General Manager, Public Affairs of FAAN, Mrs Henrietta Yakubu.

Yakubu stated that the authority had also charged all Airport Managers to employ measures to ensure that only eligible persons had access to all restricted areas at the landside, terminals and airside.

She said that Bomb Detection Unit of the Nigeria Police Force had also been charged to be more alert to compliment the efforts of aviation security personnel at the security screening points.

“To reiterate her commitment to safety of lives and properties, the Federal Government through the Nigerian Airforce recently conducted Counter Terrorism Simulation live demonstration at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

“Passenger facilitation at all our airports has also been enhanced by the upgrade of power installations, installation of modern and bigger conveyor belts and metal walk-through detectors, servicing of lifts and escalators.

“Stringent measures are being taken to eradicate the menace of touts and other unwholesome activities around the terminals.’’

Yakubu noted that the expansion and modernisation of airport terminals had provided better ambience and more space for restaurants at the terminals, as well as newly opened duty free shops.

According to her, these provide duty-free shopping experience and help passengers relax comfortably while waiting for their flights.

“FAAN, however, advises air passengers to make early arrangements for their travels and to leave home early on their travel dates, in order to complete their boarding facilities in good time.

“We wish all passengers safe and enjoyable yuletide,’’ Yakubu added.

CrimeCustoms Intercepts Bags Of Plastic Rice by RoyalMail(op): 11:46pm On Dec 20, 2016
The Federal Operations Unit, Ikeja, of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted 102 bags of plastic rice branded “Beat Tomato Rice’’ with no date of manufacture.

The Customs Area Controller of F.O.U. Comptroller Mohammed Haruna, made the disclosure in an interview with our correspondent.

He said that the commodity was stored for distribution as Yuletide gifts for the public.
Haruna said that officers of the unit intercepted the plastic rice along Ikeja area on Monday, adding that a suspect was arrested in connection with the seizure.

“Before now, I thought it was a rumour that the plastic rice is all over the country but with this seizure, I have been totally convinced that such rice exists.

“We have done the preliminary analysis on the plastic rice. After boiling, it was sticky and only God knows what would have happened if people consumed it.

“I advise those economic saboteurs who see yuletide season as a peak period for nefarious acts to desist from such illegal business.

“The unit has decided other operational modalities that will make them run for their monies and count their losses, ‘’ NAN quotes the controller as saying.

He described smuggling as a global phenomenon, adding that such act could not be curbed entirely but could be brought to its barest minimum.

Haruna appreciated well-meaning Nigerians who provided the service with prompt information that led to the discovery of the bags of plastic rice.

The controller, however, advised the media to educate the public on the existence of plastic food, adding that it was no longer a rumour.

Haruna assured the public that the distribution point of the particular plastic rice seized by the unit had been blocked with immediate effect.

He said that investigation was still ongoing.

The controller said the unit would handover the plastic rice to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) for proper investigation.
