Madiba Bay is Africa’s City of the Year Wednesday, 19 December 2007 Nelson Mandela Bay won the Best African City of the Year award at the World Leadership Awards held in London earlier this month. The City also won first prize in the Health category for the Emmanuel Haven project; a Christian response to HIV and AIDS made up of a research unit, an anti-retroviral clinic, orphans club and Christian outreach programme. The World Leadership Awards are organised by the World Leadership Forum. The non-governmental organisation promotes leadership by stimulating debate on leadership issues and highlighting the work of exceptional leaders. More than 400 cities across the world are asked to submit projects for the Leadership Awards. These encompass a range of activities including; Architecture & Civil Engineering, Culture and the arts, Economy and/or Employment, Health, Housing, Sport, Urban Renewal and Town Planning. Awards are then given to cities whose leaders have shown exceptional imagination, foresight or resilience and those cities that have reversed trends and acted as an example and inspiration to others. For the first time since the inception of the awards in 2005, judges declared four cities to be City of the Year for their region. These were Nelson Mandela Bay (Africa), Las Vegas, USA (America), Amman, Jordan (Asia-Pacific) and Madrid, Spain (Europe). An overwhelmed Executive Mayor Councillor Nondumiso Maphazi, said it was a special moment for Nelson Mandela Bay. “This has indeed proved that Nelson Mandela Bay is committed to working with the people in improving their lives for the better. “The name Nelson Mandela Bay will continue to travel around the world, and serve as an outstanding marketing tool for attracting tourists, as well as local and international investors" she added. In 2005 Nelson Mandela Bay’s entry The Red Location Museum of Struggle won the Architecture & Civil Engineering Category, while their Sustainable Community Planning entry won the Town Planning category.

Nigerian Mohammed Bello Abubakar, 84, has advised other men not to follow his example and marry 86 women. The former teacher and Muslim preacher, who lives in Niger State with his wives and at least 170 children, says he is able to cope only with the help of God. "A man with 10 wives would collapse and die, but my own power is given by Allah. That is why I have been able to control 86 of them," he told the BBC. He says his wives have sought him out because of his reputation as a healer. "I don't go looking for them, they come to me. I will consider the fact that God has asked me to do it and I will just marry them." But such claims have alienated the Islamic authorities in Nigeria, who have branded his family a cult http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/7547148.stm |
folahann:The opening will be about Africa,it will make every African proud.Like I said maybe some of the people are not used to see the country in Africa that it well developed and have a responsible government; instead of dissing why not learn, Thabo Mbeki is a good president and when he wanted unconstitutional third term we quickly voted him out of the ANC presidency, the reason we did that was to put South Africa first,no one is bigger than the country.Yes JZ(Jacob Zuma) was not the best choice, but the man has history before the rape(where he was found acquitted) and the pending corruption charges; he worked and serve the people with distinctions. His is the peoples choice at the moment. We cant go the Zimbabwe route, because our situation is different,Zimbabwe had a president who wanted to rule forever,we dont.White Zimbabwean used to carry two passports one british and zimbabwean, most of the whites in south africa has only south africa to call home, they are more patriotic than most blacks in the country they want a succesful south africa for their children. So I am sorry to tell people like landis that south africa will be in this position for a very long time.We have forgiven white in our country why cant you? I am an African: Roland Schoeman 5 December 2005 South African swimming sensation Roland Schoeman has turned down a multi-million dollar offer to represent the Gulf state of Qatar, saying it was of "tremendous importance to me that I am part of the vibrant, challenging, frustrating, beautiful and above all hopeful country I call home".

landis:So are you telling me that everything beautiful is white, every thing bad is black, get a life man. There have been more development in South Africa since Mandela became a president, south africa is more richer now than during aapartheid days infact Mandela took over a gorverment that was about to collapse. And we blacks rebuild it,because white had expertise we where wise enough to keep them.Today South Africa is producing black middle class at a fast pace,South Africa is creating more graduates,in twenty years time south african will be one of the most educated black african in the continent, along with Nigeria ![]() We'v learned from Zimbabwe and the rest of Africa what not to do. Anyway here are some of the pics of cape townAnd Joker I hope you will enjoy your stay.
