12mm columns with the right mix ratio will carry the load of a car conveniently and safely. If you want to build a septic tank column with 16mm, you may have your reasons for doing that so long as you are trained and certified to design such structure, I'm with you.

I didn't design and certified the tank. A seasoned structural engineer did and he certified that the structure is safe and fit for purpose.
Thanks for d explanation sir

Clearly it will carry the intended load(s) but that is not to say its the best industrial safe practice even if its done as designed by the structural engineer. They even did not run returns for the mat onto the beams.
@bold the beam was cast separately from the slab

You sure a 12mm reinforced column can safely carry the weight of a car?

Stop pushing blames. She didn't force you into marriage. This is why I dislike getting pregnant out of wedlock and suddenly getting the man marry you. Most men who marry in such conditions only do so for the child, not for the woman. Davido impregnated 2, didn't marry any and wasn't forced. Even the Chioma he claims to have so much affection for is pregnant just like the other ladies. Question is, would he have married her if not for the pregnancy? Wizkid has his and wasn't forced. At least, not yet. Own up to your mistakes 'cause you could've said 'No' and nothing would have happened.

What happened to having your medical records before marriage? How insensitive were you that your wife was taking a particular drug for 5 good years under your nose and you had no idea? Just thank God you and your son's are immune to the virus.
@bold How would he know if he trusted her??
She can always lie it is malaria drugs, don't blame op for this at all

PICTORIAL DEPICTION OF SAFE SEPTIC TANK TO PARK CARS

See the attached photos as illustration if you need to park a number of cars on a septic tank. Notice the rebar on the corners and the introduction of a beam (all round chaining) after about six courses of blockwork and then beaming again after the final six courses of blockwork and the slab with the manhole. This method is a safe industrial standard. Some civil/structural engineers may want to cut corners by adopting some other methods but this approach hardly fails over the years.
Is the mat rods for slab in d second pics 16mm same as columns?

good day house, is it advisable to use 10mm iron rods for lintel work of inner (partition) walls of 6" blocks in bungalow and how save is it on outer walls of 9" blocks?

my bricklayer suggests we use 3 parallel rods (triangle sharp) instead of usual/normal four (rectangular sharp) on lintel and that we can use 10mm for lintels without any cause for alarms. though he never want to compromise the standard of iron bars used for pillars which were 12mm and rectangular sharp.

thanks
All those bricklayers sef
Why still suggest 10mm when he intends to do a triangular type of reinforcement??
Please use 12mm & if possible do square. I know many people do triangle, but it is not right, reinforcement should be even in number.

the dictionary definition of both..

Lintel = a horizontal support of timber, stone, concrete, or steel across the top of a door or window.
Beam = A beam is a structural element that primarily resists loads applied laterally to the beam's axis. Its mode of deflection is primarily by bending.

you dont have to agree sir, a car is a car and a bus is a bus..
Thanks boss
Was actually expecting u to give practical examples. A lintel is resting above a door or window & supporting any load above it, a beam is resting on a column or suspended & supporting any load above it. Primarily a beam and lintel serve same purpose, in septic tanks, there is clearly no difference between a midway beam & a lintel.
A beam can be steel, wood or concrete same as lintel depending on d structure.

Just started laundry services, but hope to add hair dressing services too. laundry isn't expensive to run, or maintain as people think, a 25ltr of water and a packet of klin can wash over 10 clothes using laundry machine. A man cuts his hair once a week but washes more than 10 clothes in one week too. so, for me laundry is more lucrative if you are in good location and that is why I am into it. Once you get a good location for laundry you can contact me for mentorship. I have a young girl managing the shop but I do go there every evening to take stock and determine the average income daily since it's just a new business
How is ur laundry biz going now sir?

chain lintel is NOT necessary - its almost a waste of fund except you can afford it, LINTEL is NOT same as BEAM.
I disagree!
It is necessary considering the standard of our blocks. Both lintel & beam are made of same elements, concrete & reinforcement, their usage is what differentiates the two, it is same material.

Nigeria would have been worst than this if we have been practicing democracy since 1960.

Nigerian politicians lack discipline, patrotism, competence, education, innovation and a spirit to put d people, community above self. They are mentally weak in governance. We are just moving in a circle since 1999.

By 2023 by Gods grace ,i pray some fine ,discipline ,patrotic soldiers overthrow this democracy and never shall Nigeria return to it again.

Reading through your post has been very educational @saydfact. Thank you.

I have 2 questions I hope you will entertain.

1. Is there any cost savings in laying plumbing pipes prior to pouring concrete? Would require precise measurements to ensure pipes for toilets, showers, etc. are in the correct locations.

2. I've been thinking about another approach for columns. It will be difficult to describe so hopefully you'll catch what I'm describing.

Instead of forming the column by placing blocks on 2 sides and then securing planks on the remaining 2 sides, would there be cost savings in placing the blocks in a pattern so that the re-bar goes through the blocks and then pour concrete into the opening?
@bold it is cheaper than wood if u want to achieve a big size kind of look column, because of d volume of concrete that will be required.

Do the normally spaced lintels...

If you want to do a concrete parapet - the workmen/specialist would advise you accordingly

FOR NOW; DO THE SPACED LINTEL irrespective
But chain lintel is better if he is not doing parapet?

If u truly want a 1 bedroom in a considerably conducive environment, budget is 350k, not in town O. If u don't have from 700k upwards, comot your eye from town

Thanks for your input. I have actually considered it one time but after enquiries, i was told its not safe as it can break off and fall at any moment in time.
Lols
Who told you that?
Any parapet can fall off if not properly done, it has nothing to do with wood or precast.

Good evening sirs/mas. Please i need your inputs on these two quotations i got for the carpentry work of my parapet. The house dimensions total 208ft which is 63.4m. I actually thought that curves were gotten from plywoods, i don't know why they are both separated in the quotations. Please help me great engineers in the house.
Why not do the precast type
No wood is required, so it is cheaper

If that is the only option/alternative you have, then it's okay and safe as long as your engineer understands what he intends to do.

I have done same for a client as well due to space on land.
Land/Soil was hard and I used Y16 as grade/ground beam/12"(depth of pit was 9 foot). Installed 6 column points all with use of Y16 used Y8 as stirrups at a spacing of 150mm. I used Y12 for mid section chaining after 5 blocks of septic tank. I used Y16 as septic tank/soakaway decking slab beam and Y12 for matting.
After the extension we did another chaining and subsequently did the decking of the water tank stand at the desired height.
Please pick an appropriate concrete mix for all your works.
Good luck.
What was the sizes of d columns sir?

Hello my great Engineers in the house, please I will like to be enlightened on the construction of a water tank stand over a septic tank. My engineer advised I build my tank stand on the septic / soak away tank we are about to construct. He said we will only need 4pcs of 16mm to reinforce the water tank stand pillar from inside the ground to the top(where d water tank will be placed). And [
12mm rods will be used for other things like underground pillars, first chaining, second chaining and the slab.
Please is this best way to go about it?
God bless you as you drop your comments / advices.
It is achievable, but if land space is not an issue, do it separately
