Modern-day Lagos was founded by the Awori in the thirteenth century. It was later called Eko. The Portuguese explorer Ruy de Sequeira who visited the area in 1472, named the area around the city Lago de Curamo; the present name is Portuguese for "lakes". An alternate explanation is that Lagos was named for Lagos, Portugal - a maritime town which at the time was the main center of the Portuguese expeditions down the African coast and whose own name is derived from the Celtic word Lacobriga.

The difference here is that the Benin are not claiming they own Lagos daily which made your premises faulty.

The Benin people respect the right of the Yorubas in Lagos and you won’t see them opening threads upon threads saying they own or have a stake in Lagos.

Igbo on the other hand are trying so hard to say they own Rivers simply because Ikwerre traced their ancestry to Igboland.

So if you’re gonna use Benin analogy, you should emulate their behavior of minding their business.
Ikwerres are NOT the only people in Rivers, my dear educated friend! The folks at Obigbo being slaughtered daily to your unending excitement are indigenous to Rivers State! Obigbo/Oyigbo (choose the one that gives you orgasm) is in Rivers State! And they're the ones being killed as igbos! So how am I claiming what is mine? Or are you saying that none igbos are the ones who chased away the people of Obigbo to start ipob activities there?

Trust me I’m not insulting you.

I simply called you an illiterate based on the fact that you can’t differentiate Influence from Ownership.

For example, USA had influence on a lot of countries but does that mean USA owned those countries?

No tribe is an island, people have one time or another had influence on each other whether in the North, East, West, or South.
Educated man Sir!
You are the one acting like a deer in head light here. The Oba said this and I qoute again:

"Modern day Lagos was founded by Prince Ado, the son of the Oba of Benin, Prince Ado was the first Oba of Lagos, the son of the Bini King, Prince Ado, named the town Eko until the Portuguese explorer Ruy de Segueira changed the Maritime town to Lagos, which at that time from 1942 was Portuguese expedition center down the African Coast."

Is that quote too sophisticated for your highly educated mind to decipher?

This thread is of no importance to me in the first place. The reason why I replied initially was because of the misinformation you used about Oba of Lagos claiming Benin owned Lagos.

I showed you the link in PremiumTimes where he said that was fake news. He only mentioned the fact that the influence of Benin cannot be taken away from Lagos, but he reiterated that he never said Benin own Lagos.

Understand the difference between ownership and influence.

Ife had a lot of influence on Benin, can we claim Yoruba own Benin because of that?

The below is Azikwe statement about Onitsha and Benin. Can we now claim Benin owned Onitsha?

Posted from Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe's Autobiography "My Odyssey" listed on Amazon UK for £7,009.00 or $11,461.00.

Excerpt:
“One day I asked her (grandmother) the meaning of the word ‘Onitsha’. She explained that it had historical significance. The terminology meant one who despised another. It is a contraction of two words, Onini to despise, and Ncha meaning others. So that the two words when joined together mean one who despises others. Then I asked her why we despised others. She patted me on the back and told me that it was due to our aristocratic background and tradition. I insisted that she should explain to me the basis of this supercilious social attitude. She told me that we despised others because we descended from the Royal House of Benin and so regarded ourselves as the superiors of other tribes who had no royal blood in their veins, “

“I continued to belabor my grandmother to tell me more of the history and origins of the Onitsha people. She narrated that many many years ago, there lived at Idu (Benin) a great Oba who had many children. Due to a power struggle regarding the right of precedence among princes of the blood and other altercations, there was a civil war in Benin. One day, the supporters of one of the princes insulted and assaulted Queen Asije, the mother of of the Oba of Benin, who was accused of having trespassed on their farmland. Enraged at this evidence of indiscipline and lawlessness, the Oba ordered his war chief and brother, Gbunwala Asije to apprehend and punish the insurgents.

In the attempt to penalise them, Chima, the ultimate founder of the Onitsha city-state, a prince of the blood in his own right, led the recalcitrants against his Uncle, Gbunwala. This intensified the civil war which rent the kingdom of Benin in two and led to the founding of Onitsha Ado N’Idu, , ” “As the great trek from Benin progressed, some did not have the stout heart of the pioneer-warrior, and decided to settle at different places, known today as Onitsha -Ugbo, Onitsha-Olona, Onitsha-Mili, Obior, Issele Ukwu, Ossomari, Aboh, etc,

Benin had influence on Onitsha and even Zik spoke about it, does that mean Benin Own Onitsha?

Igala had influence on Anambra, does that mean Igala owned Anambra?

Lagos not part of Yorubaland – Oba Akiolu

The Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, has claimed that Lagos State is not part of Yoruba land.

Akiolu’s statement is coming barely a week after he publicly humiliated the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi at an event.

In a statement from Akiolu’s palace, the monarch traced the historical background of the state and why it should not be regarded as part of Yoruba land.

The statement reads: “Coming from the palace, with what I was told by my late paternal grandmother who is a descendant of Oba Ovonramwen Nogbaisi and also reading from factual Historical books, let me share this Knowledge with you all on Eko/Lagos.

"Modern day Lagos was founded by Prince Ado, the son of the Oba of Benin, Prince Ado was the first Oba of Lagos, the son of the Bini King, Prince Ado, named the town Eko until the Portuguese explorer Ruy de Segueira changed the Maritime town to Lagos, which at that time from 1942 was Portuguese expedition center down the African Coast.

“It was a major centre of the slave trade until 1851. Lagos was annexed by Britain via the Lagos treaty of cession in 1861, ending the consular period and starting the British Colonial Period. The remainder of modern day Nigeria was seized in 1886 when the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria was established in 1914 Lagos was declared its capital due to the struggle of the Bini King.

"Lagos experienced growth prior to the British Colonial rule and even more rapid growth during the Colonial rule throughout the 1960s, 70s, continued through the 80s and 90s till date. Thanks to the Awori’s, Bini’s, Yoruba’s, migrants across the nation and world at large, as no particular group of people can take the glory alone.

“Lagos is made up of Lagoons and creeks. The Lagos lagoon, Lagos Harbour, five cowne creeks, Ebute-Metta creeks, Porto-Novo creeks, New canal, Badagry creeks, Kuramo waters and Light house creeks."
