I find it so sad that even Asians such as Filipinos and co can look down on a Nigerian today. When I was growing up Indians and parkistani flocked to this country as immigrants (teachers and artisans (bakers etc). We Nigerians up to the 80s saw ourselves as superior. The answer to your question lies in the bolded. The average pay in Nigeria can't take care of bills. This is the main issue. If you look around this site. You will see some people who are making reasonable pay at their work places but they want to travel out for better life. They're the only type that are at quandary on whether to travel or not. You will see them here opening threads , trying to sample opinions on whether to leave their work in Nigeria or not, to travel. The confusion is because they have something reasonable already. Essentially, they're not all that desperate because of the job the already have.

These ones that travel through the desert and then swim through the Mediterranean, all to do olosho in the streets of Italy, are in most cases jobless, I'll informed or barely literate and so desperate. Most probably working menial jobs in Nigeria. If they go to Europe or to any other country and make as much as 2k USD a month, when they were not making up to 50k a month here, is the improvement not massive? Our governments over the years have been a series of disasters! Nigeria is a desperate place already. Governments unwillingness to inform Nigerians on what to do when they travel or where not to travel to, doesn't help matters too.

Thousands of Nigerians have died so stupidly in many countries of the world. If I tell you of the kind of stories I have heard about young Nigerians disappearing in Asia, you will shout. Many have been locked up to die for simple immigration offences. I remember mentioning this here some time in the past and someone turned it into an ethnic slugfest. Nigerians jumping off high rises just because they're running away from the immigration officers. It's so demoralizing. While most times, our boys are responsible for these sorts of treatments because of their wild behaviors, it has to be stated that in certain cases, racist disdain for the black color, which is very rampant amongst Asian security agencies, motivates some of these actions. Asians are more aggressively open with their racism towards blacks. The whites might try to hide theirs, the Asians will be crude with their displays.

The Nigerian government should be more specific in terms of the way the young ones are educated on this very issue. The dangers associated with these kinds of adventure should be taught in secondary and tertiary institutions, so that graduates trying to travel, should be mentally prepared and alert in these places. Again, stowaway, crossing the desert and all these desperate means of traveling out of Africa, are nothing but suicidal ventures these days. Folks should be educated about these dangers. Many Nigerian girls trying to cross the desert into Libya, have been abducted by very violent men from all these desert tribes! Many men killed for fun! Many have been abandoned in the middle of the Sahara desert and died in the most brutal ways possible. Few years ago, there was also a report in South Africa about some Nigerians dropped off like this into the Ocean by a Spanish ship. Apparently, they were led ashore by some dolphins or so.
