I don't know much about mastiff dogs but Bull mastiff dogs I know are generally lazy, they only bark when there's a real threat and like Rumenase wrote up there are very slow learners. A bull mastiff cannot do well as alpha dog, it needs a high energy dog like rottweiler or Gsd compared to his cousin the South African Boerboel.

A fully grown Caucasian shepherd dog can take down a fully grown rottweiler in one on one combat, why? The Caucasian ovcharka was bred to take down wolves while the rottweiler was bred for herding cattle and bear hunting. The thick fur and size of a Caucasian shepherd dog also gives it more advantage. These dogs have their grade/ratings... They are all bred for different purposes. When I say a pitbull will murder those two dogs I wasn't exaggerating.

pitts and bull mastiff are like north and south pole very far from each other and not in the same bracket just check for the meaning of mastiff and see if pit bull fits into that category or is it the bull that both if them share that is causing this Flummox

My bullmastiff is very quiet, hardly barks unless theres really an intruder. Anyone can touch him and he's very good with kids. One growl and both the rottweiler and caucasian will run for cover. To me he's the ultimate family dog. I have had only shepherd dogs all my life.

there are many things people don't understand about pitts hence the over hype. they were bred to fight and they are fighters I agree but it does not mean they are the strongest digs in the world the thing that put them apart is that they don't give up they rather die than run away from a fight. I have seen a Bull mastiff mauled a pit bull people had to intervene to save the Pitt cos it would have ended up dead.

a Boerboel because I like huge dogs(boerboel, Rott, Caucasian, bull mastiff) with short coat for easy grooming so the Caucasian is off and I like intelligent dogs which brings GSD and Malinois into the equation but their intelligence is negligible due to their smaller size, Bull mastiff is out too as I consider it a very slow learner and too sedentary for my liking(i don't think a BB can keep up with me) leaving just the Rott and boerboel and for me the boerboel comes out on top because of its African ancestry.
so basically I would pick a boerboel cos it is a combination of what I like in dogs(size, intelligent,agility and confidence ) though Rott used to be my favorite but the boerboel is as good as a Rott in all ramifications. thanks
