In just 3-4yrs - 2-3 of which was spent avoiding sure-bet debt default - an incredible feat - Ruto development has shut up all the critics and skeptics.

Just in Nairobi alone. 60K stadia, international ICE, Nairobi river regeneration, 70,000 affordable housing units, roads, rails name them

Nairobi CBD has become islamized - Somalis bought off all clubs/bars - and converted them to eateries. Bars and clubs have moved to estates and smaller centers.

popizaino:
Yesterday night , I found myself in the Nairobi CBD at 7:00 pm—and what I saw was unsettling. The city was already shutting down. Shops closed, lights off, streets thinning out. For a moment, it felt less like the capital of East Africa and more like a rural town where business ends at 6:00 pm sharp.

This is not nostalgia speaking; it’s concern. Nairobi was built on a 24-hour economy—hustle, movement, trade, energy. That rhythm is what made it competitive, attractive, and alive. A city that sleeps early is a city retreating, not advancing.

What changed? Is it insecurity, over-taxation, harassment, collapsing purchasing power, or policy fatigue? Probably all of it. But the result is the same: businesses no longer see value in staying open, and citizens no longer feel safe or solvent enough to circulate at night.

Let’s be honest: you don’t become Singapore by closing shop at sunset. Global cities work late because opportunity works late. Capital flows where activity is constant. When a city goes dark early, ambition dims with it.
This should worry all of us.

A capital city that shuts down before nightfall is quietly announcing economic distress. And unless we confront it honestly—policy by policy, street by street—we’ll keep romanticizing progress while living its opposite.

Well said.
Kenya has prioritized ICT and digital tech.
Everywhere including villages fiber is being role.
I think we have 2M fiber connections to homes - better than South Africa
Once you have laid infra.
Then rest are easy to capture.
EKONGKING:
To be honest .

Kenya is doing things right economically ,which Nigeria has just started .

Since iam from tech sector , i will explain . The main thing is to capture Consultanting and Coding jobs which are leaving India as India has choosen to prioritize AI,Semi Conductors ,Chips ,Battery storage of electricity etc , as they are 10 years backward from China and US .

We need to occupy that space ,or else jobs and money will leave to other Asian countries .

A example , i want to quote is , Philippines occupied the space of BPO or Call centers .

Who are BPO or call centers , they are the persons answering the customer calls ,when u have a complaint via toll free numbers . Millions of Indians used to be employed which is why Americans used to parody the Indian accent in late night shows or elsewhere .

Indians have then shifted to Coding and Consulting jobs ,which is higher grade and Philippines has grabbed the entire sector of BPO or call center from India and became a leader in a Industry worth 10s of billions of Dollars and led to this modern Philippines economy .

Digital economy is the way forward and I hope African countries step up and get companies away from other Asian countries .

Ruto and Tinubu understand that , pity is with all the advantages South Africa is stuck back and it went seriously wrong somewhere in that country .
