bodejohn: Oga Richmon74, you should not jump to conclusions that because we get a yield that is lower than your expections the panels are therefore cheap and substandard.
Like I said in my previous post, my CC switches to float around midday and since I hardly dip my batteries below 70% DOD I do not expect any better result. In my own case I know my battery bank is undersized, the more reason I am willing to increase by switching to Trojan batteries.
I was able to cross the 10kW mark because I switched on my fridge and freezer a little earlier on the said day and my wife had a filled day using the washing machine and the water pump.
As rightly mentioned above, overall harvest is also a function of what is being demanded. Even if you have the best panel money can buy and your energy usage is low, your yield won't shoot beyond what you have consumed.
seyikares: @rayval -if u want your liquid soap to be foamy, u increase your SLS and also add foam booster .. d soap will be luxuriously foamy. U can get d foam boaster @ ojota chemical MKT, it is in liquid foam,a litre of it is N600.for d qty of wat u just produced, u don't need more than 1/4 liter if it... For d preservative - pls stay away from formalin, its proven beyond doubt DAT its usage can lead to cancer (ask experts or Google it. U can use citric acid or soibact instead - I've been using citric acid for mine
Please what ratio of citric acid do you use for your liquid soap.
Strongbest: So far, we've been able to establish the fact that, with just 3,000 naira you can start your own liquid toilet wash production business.
Thanks.
Delivery accuracy and approach is quite appreciated. This is learning from practical point, quality and value far outweigh the token paid. More greese to your elbow.
Sayvabs: @strongbest. Thanks for the matured response. I still main my comment that 3000 naira cannot be a start up capital for toilet production line! By the time you sum up the cost of raw material, equipment, packaging, transport, marketing and so on. That amount can't go anywhere. And you are talking about production line! Maybe you are getting my point. I'm not discrediting your formula but the business aspect of it is not a complete info.
The choice we make in life could be influenced by what we know and what we've seen. The training has not been delivered, market break down have not been done, material list and associated cost has not been given out. So why jumping to conclusion. I am a fan of constructive criticism with unbiased mind set and well articulated delivery. If you feel Strongbest is not right in any way, give us your facts, not just blanket statement.
DRealGeesam: Thank you very much sir. Well put. The problem is not that there aint people/companies that can do solar properly the real problem is not telling the truth! How? 1. A lot of credible engineers discovered that they were not making headway with being plain with clients. E.g telling the client it will cost 1million to install a solar power system. Even though it will last 25-30years, the client wont appreciate the value cos he sees it as expensive, so what did some desperate companies do? They will come out and deceive people saying u can power you whole home for 100,000 naira only! Blah blah blah. Then they do a shabby job and run away. That is number one reason why solar power is not doing well. Just yesterday i saw he lady here on nairaland trying to sell an inverter and 100ah battery for 55k and she claims you will use it for 8hrs a day! This is a BIG lie! 8hrs? How powering all she listed. So untrue. This is what is killing alternative energy in Nigeria, exaggerations and cheap prices.
2. Companies that plainly dont know what they are doing. No background in electrical electronics. And then there are those who even have a background in electrical engineering, but they dont know what they are doing. Just plain and simple.
By God's grace very soon, i will be relating jobs for nairalanders here so everyone sees how practical it is.
I dont try to corner people into paying cheap. What you sow is what you reap, i have adviced many not to bother saying they want to use solar because they expect the price to be at par with that of a generator and soon someone will deceive then and say "bring the money, i will do it for you" Go to olx you will see a lot of boys claiming they can do a solar power system for a whole 3bedroom bungalow for just 25k! That cant even buy a quality inverter talkless of an array of panels to power a whole house.
Part of the reason why i opened this thread. Here, there is no secret, we tell you as it is in the open. I dont ask people to call me, all that "pls call us" are all strategies to hoodwink people.
Ask ANY question HERE and get answers HERE. The whole world will see it. Solar power is very reliable, apart from the initial cost, it is over 15 times cheaper than generators in the course of the years it will serve. If only our government has a sort of subsidy scheme just like in the US and UK, it would have been more affordable.
If you can afford it, there is no regretting it
Thanks for the comment. Much appreciated.
Choice we make most time is a function of our knowledge limitation. Been using renewable energy for almost a year and I can attest to the effectiveness, rest of mind, no noise, 24/7 power availability and above all happiness in faces of family member.
With panel price keeping crashing with awareness growing by the day, this is the way to go. Getting discouraged by initial cost when actually person concern can afford it is like being penny wise and pound foolish.
ibizgirl: You are welcome. Hope you try it out and let me know how it turns out
Appreciate the good work.
Meanwhile what size of cup used as measure. Is it milk tin or plastic cup? Knowing the actual measure will ensure accurate proportion of the ingredients.
bodejohn: I wasn't complanning as I still get enough from my panels even on rainning days. I was just looking forward to when I will be changing my current batteries. I just think it will be better to invest in more panels than more days of autonomy in the battery bank. I have often wondered why George D has that much panels...
Please don't get me wrong with the word COMPLAIN. Just making inference to substantiate benefit of more panels vis a vis location influence. Base on weather effect, we do have more cloudy days in PH compared to Ibadan. I do pop into Ibadan every two months and already planning toward relocating to the ancient city.
bodejohn: Dear friends, I found some days off my crazy schedule in the office and after resting the whole of the first day I decided to check how my renewable power setup was doing on the second.
Most people would have noticed the cloudy skies especially in and around Ibadan in the last one or two weeks, my 2.7kw solar panels was delivering just about 1kw at the time I logged into the morning star mppt CC.
Just then, a question came into my mind, which would be cost effective? Building a 3 day battery autonomy or installing enough panels to be able to provide the needed power during cloudy days?
I think doubling required panel size might just be better because the average life span of the solar panel is like double that of the battery, moreso while panels can be added at will, it is not that advise able to add more batteries to a bank that is older than 6months.
It all boiled down to trade off on one side or the other. With prevailing weather, more battery autonomy would mean better security but how do u plan to charge the more battery. Which mean possibility of trading off batteries life and efficiency if present panel available cannot bring them back to full charge.
Panel cost keep dropping by the day and can live longer than any batteries available today. Getting more panels to conveniently handle cloudy days will ensure better juice for batteries and even lesser cost.
I am presently running my house with 520ah batteries (2 strings of 260ah batterie) and 3600W panels. If I can survive cloudy weather in Port Harcourt with this setup, you won't have reason to complain in Ibadan.
chris81964: A system we installed in Magodo. Initially ran with two batteries and the homeowner agreed to double the capacity. He should have 8 batteries to get the a day and half with no sun and NEPA / PHCN.
George_D: all, happy 2014 to everyone in the house. may all our days be sunny and bright this new year and may we never walk in the dark, gloomy shadows of years past! just got back from the village over the weekend and have been offline for a while. that said, its nice to see a lot of developments on the thread. i'm particularly impressed with salam12 installation. looks like a new solar convert who has finally decided to take the plunge and he's really done it in a big way. congrats!
[quote author=George_D]all,
Thank you bros. Your believe in sharing knowledge actually spurred me into renewable energy option and I must confess it has been quite rewarding. Been off town for almost 2 wks and wifey with the kids have attested to beauty of 24/7 power supply without noise. Pumping water and washing clothes at will without having to cope with generator wahala.
shithapuns: yeh, i tot they re dc circuit breakers...checked the site you posted..its usa site....so u buy stuff from them?..do they deliver to nigerai?..or u first ship 2 usa address?
They dont deliver straight to Nigeria; you have to get a US address. Alternatively, you can source from them through orderbay.com or circuitatlantic.com.
shithapuns: THE WHITE CIRCUIT BREAKER IN THE 2ND PIC..ARE THEY DC RATED?..WHERE/HOW MUCH DID U GET THEM?
Those breakers are mainly AC circuit breakers. They are for AC input into voltage stabilizer and AC output from Inverter. All DC breakers are enclosed in combiner and Mini DC disconnect.
If you are referring to DC breakers in the combiner box, they are all DC rated and you can source through http://www.solar-electric.com/.
earthrealm: wow!...another george d in the making!!. ur set up there go reach 2million naira o..cool.pics as soon as u set it up?..are you going totally offgrid?.......if yes..i think a 5kva inverter wud hv been more suitable...scratch that...i dont know ur load
Thanks earthrealm, in this field of renewable energy, George D is always on top and great Inspiration. I cut down cost by latching on to a friend that was shipping some items from China. Got panels and batteries at very attractive price couple with not paying for shipping down to Naija. You are right about getting 5kva inverter; it would form part of my later upgrade preferably getting Outback or Magnum when I'm ready. Meanwhile I am optimizing with an existing Su Kam 3.5kva inverter. Ultimate aim is to go off grid; for now still combining with limited grid supply. Current load on inverter: 1) 1pc 40in LCD TV 2) 1 pc home theatre 3) 3 pcs standing fan 4) 8 pcs 12w internal light 5) 4 pcs 30w security light 6) Occasioal 1hp sumo pump 7) Twice weekly 7kg washing machine Sat decoder 9) Computers and rest items such as phones
Big thank you to Seun Osewa for creating this platform which have been serving as great medium to share knowledge. I need to commend originator of this thread and Oga at the top - George D for his tenacity and knowledge sharing. Every contributor to this thread - both experts and novices should keep the information flowing.
I have been a follower of this thread for quite some years and have gone through all posts. Knowledge acquired so far spurred me into renewable energy and I am hitting the ground with the following items:
1) 12 pcs 300w solar panel 2) 8 pcs 12v x 260amps deep cycle batteries 3) Midnite Classic 150 Charge Controller 4) Midnite 125A Mini Disconnect 5) Midnite MPV6 Combiner Box 6) Existing Su Kam 3500kva inverter 7) installation accessories - cables
Installation arrangement and pictures would be posted as soon as possible.
