1. You dont remove the nerve. RCT is mostly recommended when the infection or tooth decay has gone beyond the pulp and into the periodontium. That explains its tenderness to percussion. So far the infection has gone beyond the pulp, it means the pulp has become necrotic. In this case, root canal is done to remove all the necrotic pulp tissue and filled up with restorative materials. This does not mean we only do RCT for tooth with necrotic pulp. I am just establishing the fact that you are not removing the nerve. As a matter of fact you give local anesthesia for a symptomatic tooth before doing Root Canal Therapy.

2. It is not only common that a cap/crown be placed on a tooth that root canal therapy has been performed on. It is mandatory and extremely important or else that tooth will break down and eventually be extracted.
