A Malaysian member of parliament, Tasek Gelugor, said girls as young as nine were “physically and spiritually” ready for marriage. He made comments on Wednesday as Malaysia passed a law on sexual offences against children without criminalising child marriage. Gelugor, a member of the Barisan Nasional coalition, made the comments in response to a proposal by an opposition member of parliament to amend the Sexual Offences Against Children bill to include a ban on child marriages. The proposal was voted down by the majority of parliament. “They reach puberty at the age of nine or 12. And at that time, their body is already akin to them being 18 years old. “So physically and spiritually, it is not a barrier for the girl to marry,” Tasek said on Tuesday during a debate on the bill. He also said there was “nothing wrong” with a rape victim marrying her rapist as she would then not face a “bleak future”. Tasek’s comments sparked outrage on social media, with some opposition politicians asking for him to be fired. Under both civil law and Islamic law, girls and boys younger than 18 can be married. Civil law sets the minimum age of marriage at 18, but those above 16 can be married with the permission of their state’s chief minister. Under Islamic law, children younger than 16 can get married if the Shariah courts allow it. The law criminalises “grooming”, touching and befriending children as a prelude to sexual abuse, and spells out penalties for making and possessing pornography involving those under 18. A special court will also be set up under the new law to deal with child sexual abuse cases more quickly. The maximum penalty under the law is a jail term of up to 30 years and six strokes of the whip for making, possessing or distributing child pornography. The new law comes into effect ten months after British pedophile Richard Huckle was found guilty of abusing up to 200 babies and children, mostly in Malaysia. Reuters reported in 2017 that most complaints of child sexual abuse in Malaysia do not lead to successful prosecutions, largely due to weaknesses in the criminal justice system. Only 140 of the 12,987 cases of child sexual abuse reported to police between 2012 and July 2016 resulted in convictions. “The law is more stringent now… but not enough,” Teo Nie Ching, the opposition member of parl;iament who proposed the ban child marriages, told Reuters. She said offenders would use the absence of a ban on child marriages to get away with crimes as marital rape is not a crime in Malaysia. There have been several cases over the years of rapists marrying theirs victim, including those under 18, to avoid prosecution.(Reuters/NAN) https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/general/girls-as-young-as-9-are-physically-spiritually-ready-for-marriage-mp/192234.html |

The rescued woman being led into police vehicle By Kazeem Ugbodaga The Lagos State Police Command has rescued a woman, Taiwo Titilayo Momoh, who attempted to jump into the Lagoon from Third Mainland Bridge on Friday. This is coming few days after a medical doctor, Allwell Orji jumped into the Lagoon from Third Mainland Bridge. His remains were retrieved from the water on Wednesday. Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni told newsmen at the Lagos Government Secretariat, Alausa, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria on Friday that Momoh was in a taxi heading towards Oworonshoki on Third Mainland Bridge when she told the taxi driver to stop on the bridge. According to Owoseni, the woman was about to jump into the water when a police patrol team on a routine patrol on the Third Mainland Bridge sighted her and rushed to save her before she jumped into the Lagoon. “She attempted suicide by attempting to jump into the Lagoon around Oworonshoki inward Mainland on Third Mainland Bridge. Unfortunately for her, she was rescued. The woman was in a taxi and alighted on the bridge and wanted to commit suicide by jumping into the Lagoon. “The police patrol team sighted her and rushed to rescue her before she jumped into the Lagoon,” he said. The commissioner said from his interaction with the woman, she had depression as a result of unpaid loans, adding that “she is still insisting that she wants to end her life.” Owoseni noted that committing suicide was an offence under the law but that the police would try to talk the woman out of committing suicide. He said the woman would be taken through post-trauma programme to ensure that she had hope and not commit suicide, adding that the police would do a medical evaluation on her to ascertain her condition. Owoseni lamented the rate at which people commit suicide in the country, describing it as worrisome, adding that the police had begun patrol of bridges across the state to forestall other cases of suicide. He added that it was now an offence for individuals to walk on bridges in the state and that no vehicle would be allowed to stop on any bridge in the state henceforth in order to prevent suicide incidences. “Right now, the woman is still in trauma and she still insists that she wants to end her life,” he said. As the woman was being led from the RRS headquarters into a waiting police vehicle, she was confronted by several television cameras and still cameras and she reacted by saying that she was not a criminal and that her photograph should not be taken. |

In November, 2016 student of NOUN wake up to find out that the NOUN website is frozen. Many thought it to be temporary; may be due to slight technical challenge or for some maintenance purposes. At that time many student were not able to submit their TMA (TUTOR-MARKED ASSIGNMENT) and were hopeful of the return of the portal. It was latter down on everybody that the site is permanently shut down unceremoniously without any formal announcement to the university community. The university developed a new website and abandons the old website. The new website developed is a shadow of its self compare to the old website which is world class in all respect. The new website is lunched for over a month now, but is still non functional Students, both prospective and returning who paid their fees through REMITA stand the chance of losing their money as the money is not reflecting on their WALLETS. And all those who have monies in their E-WALLET in the previous website cannot access the money. I will suggest that this new site project should be put on hold and return to the old site until everything concerning the new site is perfected. And again, instead of given such a huge technical website to incompetent developers, good hands should be employ for the Job. NOUN should as a matter of fact return to their old way of practice where Helpline telephone numbers are working, email is functional and school directors responds to queries. |
