Another Nigerian Killed By The South African Police A 46-year-old Nigerian businessman, Pius Ezekwem, has been killed in South Africa’s eastern cape province, allegedly by a group of eight policemen who interrogated him at his home at the weekend. The deceased, who ran a chain of bed and breakfast guest houses, was picked up at a Nigerian eatery and was forcefully taken to his home for a search and interrogation. .

In a landmark ruling, a court in Mexico City has said two people should be allowed to use cocaine legally. The ruling means the unnamed pair can use, but not sell, small amounts of cocaine, according to Mexico United Against Crime (MUCD), an NGO that filed legal papers in the case as part of its strategy to change the country’s drug policy.

This is the first time cocaine use has been made legal in Mexico, but the ruling still needs to be ratified by a higher court. It comes at a time when Mexico is grappling with its drug policy under President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, whose official development plan for 2019-2024 pledges to reform a “prohibitionist approach” that it calls “unsustainable” due to the “violence and poor public health outcomes” it has generated. Mexico has been locked in a war on drugs since 2006. The court ruling orders Mexico’s national health regulator, Cofepris, to authorize two people to legally possess, transport and use cocaine. However, a Cofepris official told the AFP news agency that such an authorization is outside its remit, and it has blocked the court order as a result.

Several people were injured Saturday afternoon during a lightning storm at East Lake Golf Club, which is hosting the Tour Championship in Atlanta. . .

The lightning appeared to strike a tree, sending other golf fans running. Four adult males and a juvenile were seeking shelter near a pine tree when lightning struck the tree. A sixth person also had injuries, police said.

EFCC Docks Lawyer For N20.4m Fraud The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Lagos Zonal office, on Thursday, August 22, 2019, arraigned one Taofik Oladipo Elias, a lawyer, before Justice Hakeem Oshodi of the State High Court sitting in Lagos on a two-count charge bordering on stealing to the tune of N20.4million. . .

The complainant, Gunther Uche Maduike, allegedly approached the defendant to sell a property in the Obalende area of Lagos for him. . .

The defendant, however, allegedly failed to remit the proceeds from the sale of the property to the family of the complainant. . . One of the counts reads: “That you, Taofik Oladipo Elias, on or about 13th February, 2015 in Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, with a dishonest intent, converted to your own use the sum of N10,000,000.00k (Ten Million Naira) property of Gunther Uche Maduike.” . .

Borno Governor uses Qur’an to curse those diverting IDPs’ items Professor Babagana Zulum, the governor of Borno State, has invoked the wrath of God upon anyone who steals or diverts foods or reliefs meant for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the camps. . .

Zulum, who personally supervised the distributions of food items to about 200, 000 IDPs in Monguno for two days, asked any official and collaborators among the displaced persons that engage in diversion of foodstuffs or theft to desist forthwith or receive the anger of God. . .

“May the wrath of God come upon anyone who has collected allocation ticket but came here to collect what is meant for others,” the governor said through the camp administrator, Malam Babagana, who raised a copy of Qu’ran. . .

He said the governor has asked him to announce that “the curse of God through the instrumentality of the Qur’an, shall come upon any person” from himself as the number one citizen in the state “down to humanitarian officials of SEMA (State EMergency Management), NEMA (National Emergency Management Agency) , other government officials and anybody at all,” who diverts food meant for IDPs.” . .

Special Adviser to the governor on Public Relations and Strategy, Malam Isa Gusau, said the governor was concerned about Issue of diversion of foods at IDPs camps as well as some IDPs collecting multiple rations.
