Mombasa CBD is called the old town - and still better than Abuja a new town. Mombasa was started in 10th century. Those times there were no cars...so the streets are narrow....Mombasa CBD being part of Old town is protected area...so you cannot build or demolish anything at will. The streets are narrow by design - it like you got to old Italian or greek town.

It appears Mzanzi started to build rural homes recently - but Kenyans have been investing in rural areas since 1960s! Nearly every Kenya including those in urban areas have a home in rural areas. I think 99% of kenyans maintain two homes.

Dont compare Upper hill which is a new cbd to the old raggedy Lagos and Abuja. The place was a residential area few years ago. The skyscrappers caught everybody by surprise. The county govt is now upgrading the roads to match its newfound status. What you see now is not deterioration but the roads that served residential areas before they were torn down for skycrappers. As you know sammy, our old CBD is jam packed! There's no more room for development, and we need to take on Africa Btw, in a few years upper hill will be looking like Downtown Manhattan...Hate to say this but even JoBurg is not in our bucket list
