Romance / What Is Domestic Violence by samvega: 1:58pm On Feb 25, 2017
WHAT IS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE?

We define domestic violence as a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another intimate partner. Domestic violence can be physical, sexual, emotional, economic, or psychological actions or threats of actions that influence another person. This includes any behaviors that intimidate, manipulate, humiliate, isolate, frighten, terrorize, coerce, threaten, blame, hurt, injure, or wound someone.

Physical Abuse: Hitting, slapping, shoving, grabbing, pinching, biting, hair pulling, etc are types of physical abuse. This type of abuse also includes denying a partner medical care or forcing alcohol and/or drug use upon him or her.

Sexual Abuse: Coercing or attempting to coerce any sexual contact or behavior without consent. Sexual abuse includes, but is certainly not limited to, marital rape, attacks on sexual parts of the body, forcing sex after physical violence has occurred, or treating one in a sexually demeaning manner.

Emotional Abuse: Undermining an individual's sense of self-worth and/or self-esteem is abusive. This may include, but is not limited to constant criticism, diminishing one's abilities, name-calling, or damaging one's relationship with his or her children.

Economic Abuse: Is defined as making or attempting to make an individual financially dependent by maintaining total control over financial resources, withholding one's access to money, or forbidding one's attendance at school or employment.

Psychological Abuse: Elements of psychological abuse include - but are not limited to - causing fear by intimidation; threatening physical harm to self, partner, children, or partner's family or friends; destruction of pets and property; and forcing isolation from family, friends, or school and/or work.

Domestic violence can happen to anyone regardless of race, age, sexual orientation, religion, or gender. Domestic violence affects people of all socioeconomic backgrounds and education levels. Domestic violence occurs in both opposite-sex and same-sex relationships and can happen to intimate partners who are married, living together, or dating.

Domestic violence not only affects those who are abused, but also has a substantial effect on family members, friends, co-workers, other witnesses, and the community at large. Children, who grow up witnessing domestic violence, are among those seriously affected by this crime. Frequent exposure to violence in the home not only predisposes children to numerous social and physical problems, but also teaches them that violence is a normal way of life - therefore, increasing their risk of becoming society's next generation of victims and abusers.

Romance / Re: They Sleep With Girls To Take Their Star & Leave Them Struggling All Their Lives by samvega: 12:11pm On Feb 16, 2017
This is called preying on fear of the unknown to drive traffic to religious entrepreneurs. You see ,if you suspect your star has been stolen then you go for prayer and deliverance where you will make some donation to God. Its all part of a sophisticated business to hoodwink the gullible into paying something for nothing. What I may ask is a star and how can someone steal it. Let me tell you the stars I know that no one can steal.

They include but are not limited to-
Education
Professional Skill learnt through practical training
Human Relations and People skills
All Kinds of Experiences that can be translated into profitable entrepreneurship

IF OP is however referring to the mythical mystical star of unknown origin, then it it is an appeal to ignorance.

In these times of economic Hardship, many poor Nigerians will begin to believe someone has stolen their star and they will need to do something about it. In the process, they fall into a vicious circle of seeking deliverance from dubious spiritualists who will claim to have expertise in recovering stolen stars. Victims eventually get sucked into a mystical MMM type setup where you will always give out your scarce resources while expecting to receive benefits that will never come.

Lets smarten up, the year is still young

Politics / Re: Osinbajo: Nigeria To Make Forex More Flexible, Conclude Eurobond End Of Q1 by samvega: 10:53am On Nov 30, 2016
$1 billion euro bond will do nothing to the exchange rate. Plus there is always time to pay back the bond which will take us back to square 0ne. This economy needs a minimum for $10b to get reflated and for things to have a semblance of normalcy.

Urgent Action needs to be taken as this crime turning out to be an epidemic. With over 100 kidnappings monthly nationwide no one is safe.

The only way to fight the encroachment of technology on Jobs is getting new skills. The Deskilling thesis (google that) argues that technology is making people lose their skills and jobs. The counter thesis is the re-skilling thesis which argues that Technology throws up a whole new set of Jobs that pay better but require new skills. Think about new job opportunities in Mobile phones including repair, sales, software, parts and others. Think about Computer related jobs too. So the challenge really is to quickly jump on the right bus and not to cry at the station for the Bus that already left the park. These are the challenges of our times . And OP, why not support card seller to do a short course , acquire some practical skill and start making money again?

Crime / Italian Court Rules Food Theft 'not A Crime' If Hungry by samvega: 5:26am On May 06, 2016
Stealing small amounts of food to stave off hunger is not a crime, Italy's highest court of appeal has ruled.
Judges overturned a theft conviction against Roman Ostriakov after he stole cheese and sausages worth €4.07 (£3; $4.50) from a supermarket.
Mr Ostriakov, a homeless man of Ukrainian background, had taken the food "in the face of the immediate and essential need for nourishment", the court of cassation decided.
Therefore it was not a crime, it said.
A fellow customer informed the store's security in 2011, when Mr Ostriakov attempted to leave a Genoa supermarket with two pieces of cheese and a packet of sausages in his pocket but paid only for breadsticks.
In 2015, Mr Ostriakov was convicted of theft and sentenced to six months in jail and a €100 fine.

Health / 10 Secrets Your Tongue Reveals About Your Health by samvega: 1:57pm On Mar 15, 2016
If you’ve wondered why your doctor or dentist regularly asks to look at your tongue during routine checkups, here’s a quick answer: Your tongue reflects your overall health in ways that you might not realize.

Yes, your tongue actually has a bigger purpose than merely facilitating taste and allowing you to lick frosting off baked goods.

It serves as a window to any deficiencies you might have, and it may physically manifest symptoms of various major underlying diseases.

After the gums, the tongue is the most common disease-harboring site in the mouth.

However, it remains one of the most neglected organs of our bodies. Even routinely cleaning it is a task many disregard.

While the tongue is technically an internal organ, we do have the option of sticking it out from time to time and observing it in the mirror as we do the rest of our external body.

You will be surprised at the number of things your tongue might suddenly reveal, once you know what to look for.

Identifying a symptom is the first step toward dealing with countless diseases and maintaining optimal health

As a graduate why not climb up the ladder a little bit. Since so many people are into farming, you can do both fish and chicken business but its more profitable to go into packaging and distribution.

Politics / Re: "Blame Northern-Nigeria Muslim Elites For Boko Haram" - Bishop Matthew Kukah by samvega: 9:32am On Nov 30, 2015
That’s Vintage Kukah always making intelligent no holds barred analysis, not caring whose ox is gored. But I think we need to stop the blame game and work collectively towards finding a lasting solution. Essentially I see Boko haram is a cult group that has become militarized through the actions and omissions of internal and external forces. Similar Cult groups in other parts of the world were exterminated by timely intervention of security forces well before these groups consolidated and escalated their activities. I think Jim Jones, Branch Davidians, Children of Gods Family international (Google cult groups to learn more) are some of such cult groups which if they had been allowed to proliferate would have spelt similar disaster .
The growth of Boko-Haram can be largely attributed to our intelligence and security flaws as well as our hydra headed monster-corruption. Funds meant to fight Boko Haram were diverted while ill equipped and unmotivated solders were sent to fight a more formidable / suicidal enemy. So while Northern elite and their religious base can be cited as contributory factors the more relevant logic is to collapse all of this into a broader discussion on the failure of the state and proliferation of cult groups in Africa.

Business / Re: How A Man Got Duped Of $30,000 Inside FCMB In Lagos - Photos by samvega: 2:54pm On Sep 14, 2015
This is as interesting as it is intriguing. The basic elements of the story are clear and to me we have 3 key players each with a motive and opportunity to have perpetrated this act

The Bank
The Bank is my number one suspect only because banks are known not only for round tripping Forex but for arranging insider Forex sales between customers with inflow(that is customers who get direct deposits of USD to their accounts) and other customer who wanted to buy. If the USD was sourced officially from the bank some record will be available to trace the money. If it was a private arrangement brokered by a bank official then the plot immediately assumes a new dimension

The Hausa Man
The Hausa man is most likely everyone's first suspect. After all he supplied the USD. What baffles me is he didnt run and even agreed take the Victim back to the bank to resolve the issue.
His actions do not suggest culpability but again we have really sharp guys who can play mind games

The Purported Victim
Never rule out the most unlikely suspect. I will guess that the victim has a boss who truly owns the money. I have seen many cases where the purported victim turns out to be the perpetrator

Stay tuned as this interesting case unfolds
