Politics / Buhari’s Victory, A Boost For Economic, Infrastructure Development- Ondo APC by sanmiade001: 1:00pm On Feb 28, 2019
The Chairman of Ondo state chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Ade Adetimehin, has described the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari, as a robust victory for economic and infrastructure development in the country.

He stated this in a statement by Mr Alex Kalejaiye, the state publicity secretary of the party, on Wednesday in Akure.

“The re-election of Buhari for a second term, against all odds, affirms the acceptance of the APC, and acknowledgment of his performance.

“I have no doubt that with his re-election, Nigeria will be taken to the next level of economic prosperity, infrastructure development, and political stability,” he said.

He described the coming of Buhari and his deputy, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, as divine arrangement for the emancipation of the country once invaded by political holocaust.

The chairman commended Nigerians for voting for integrity, sincerity and development, rather than falling for orchestrated propaganda and massive deceit.

“We also appreciated the good people of the state for standing by the party, and urged them to vote for the party in the forthcoming state House of Assembly election.

“I acknowledge the fact that the party made some political blunders in the state in the just-concluded election, but those wrong steps will be corrected in the upcoming election,” he said.(NAN)

Politics / ‘akeredolu’s Achievements Unprecedented’ by sanmiade001: 9:49am On Feb 27, 2019
‘Akeredolu’s achievements unprecedented’

The achievements recorded in the last two years of the Akeredolu-led administration have been described as unprecedented.

The Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the Governor, Mr Segun Ajiboye made this known during a chat with The Hope in his office in Akure yesterday.

He said Governor Akeredolu has proved that with dedication and determination, a leader can perform wonders even with little funds.

According to him “in the area of infrastructure, no government, at least, in the new dispensation has surpassed his records.

“As we speak, constructions of roads are going on in all the three senatorial zones, with more than 70 kilometers of roads completed.

“Look at workers’ welfare, and you’ll be amazed at what has been done in the last two years. The Governor met seven months salary arrears, but has cleared six, while at the same time he is up to date in payment of salary and allowances.

“lt is the same in all the other sectors, as he continues to make life easy for people of the state.

“You will recall that while taking his oath of office, he gave the people a message of hope, clear agenda of prosperity and a vision of abundant life and to a very large extent, Governor Akeredolu has delivered on these promises”, he said.

He also lauded Governor’s giant stride in Ikare Akoko, where the mythical Oke Alabojuto has been leveled and his efforts at Sabome and Ore in the south to have a first hand experience of the good works of the government in terms of various industries.

“In investment, the governor has attracted more investors to the state more than all the other administration put together. The airport, which was in a state of abandonment has come to life with daily flights to Abuja and Lagos.

“Our schools are now safer for our children to study with perimeter fence. SUBEB has either constructed or repaired more than 500 primary schools.

“The tertiary institutions are better funded. It is the same in the health sector and everybody can feel what the governor is doing. I believe it has been two years of great success and unprecedented achievements”, he said.

Also accessing the Governor’s performances in the last two years, was a University Lecturer, Dr Gbenga Abimbola who described Akeredolu’s achievements as unequalled, compared to his predecessors.

He said “In terms of worker’s welfare, he has performed far better than others. He met about seven months’ salary arrears and has cleared six remaining outstanding.

“Since he came, he never owed any worker, he has been paying on monthly basis, he made worker’s welfare his priority.

“Secondly, he has done excellently well in infrastructure development, especially in road projects.

“He completed some roads in the last two years and has awarded massive road projects across the state which are all ongoing. He has equally done well in other areas of governance”, he said.

Dr Abimbola admonished the Governor to focus more on the agricultural sector.

Politics / APC Council Hails Nigerians For Peaceful Conduct by sanmiade001: 10:05am On Feb 26, 2019
APC council hails Nigerians for peaceful conduct

The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council has commended Nigerians for their peaceful conduct in most areas during the Saturday National Assembly presidential elections.

In a statement signed on behalf of the Strategic Communications Committee of the group by Dr Al-Hameeda Fraser on Monday, the council also said there was a need for everyone to continue in the same spirit till results were announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission and afterwards.

“There can only be one winner of any election based on facts and figures. We wish to advise the electorate to remain patient, calm and peaceful whilst the final stage of the collation is completed,” the group said.

“Nigerians are hereby advised to wait until results are announced by INEC only, in order to avoid confusion, disaffection and post-election violence in the polity,” it added.

The group said it realised and had accepted the fact that INEC remained the only authorised institution to announce results as stipulated by the Nigerian constitution and laws establishing the commission.

“We thereby advise INEC and all security agencies to act in a proactive manner and prevent any occurrence capable of undermining the integrity of the polls to cause any form of civil disturbance in the country. Nobody should be above the law in this regard,” the group stated.

While commending INEC for what it described as “well-organised, free and fair elections so far nationwide,” the group advised the commission to remain a neutral umpire until all results were collated and announced accordingly.

The group said, “We also called for security operatives and apparatus to be positioned in a proactive manner once results are being announced in order to prevent post-election violence and protect innocent lives and property nationwide due to the keenly contested elections just concluded.

“The political class needs to respect the rule of law and relevant institutions while actualising their political aspiration.”

Ahead of Saturday’s general elections, the Ondo State government has pledged its cooperation with security agencies and other relevant stakeholders to ensure peaceful conduct across the state.

The state governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN) made the promise while receiving in his office a delegation of the Nigerian Police led by the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in charge of Training and Development, Yakubu Jubril, who was in the state on a mission to supervise the conduct of the general elections in the Southwest zone of the country.

The governor who was represented by his deputy, Agboola Ajayi expressed optimism that the scheduled elections would be smooth in the state, owing to the record of the state as the most peaceful in the Niger Delta region.

Akeredolu maintained that his government is committed to ensuring conducive environment for peaceful conduct of his people that will engender free, fair and credible polls.

“It is not just important but compulsory that all of us must maintain peace during and after the election. That is our message”, he stated.

The governor however urged the Police to carry out their assignment without bias and caution politicians who are desperate to have their desires achieved at all cost to desist.

Earlier, the team leader, DIG Yakubu Jubril had informed that his mission is to supervise the forthcoming general elections in the Southwest Zone 11, comprising Ondo, Oyo and Osun, to ensure law, order and peace before during and after the polls.

Having served at various levels in different towns in Ondo state in the past including his youth service, the supervising DIG said he is familiar with the people, terrain and topography of the state, noting that residents are peace loving and law abiding.

Politics / Corruption Limiting Our Performance, Says Osinbajo by sanmiade001: 4:02pm On Feb 12, 2019
Corruption limiting our performance, says Osinbajo

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has said the ruling All Progressives Congress would have performed better but for corruption, adding that graft was preventing Nigerians from enjoying full dividends of democracy.

Osinbajo said if re-elected, the APC led-government would invest $500m in job creation.

He spoke on Monday during a visit to the Oloja of Epe, Oba Kamorudeen Animashaun, as part of electioneering campaign.

The vice-president urged Nigerians not to vote the opposition Peoples Democratic Party.

He said, “At the next level government, we want to establish Entrepreneur Bank and Peoples Money Bank to complement the Bank of Industry. Already, we are in partnership with the Africa Development Bank to invest $500m in creating jobs.

“All these things ought to have been done before now, but corruption has prevented us from enjoying these things. We are at a point that we need to tell ourselves the truth because the country ought to have moved far ahead of where we are. If the leaders are corrupt, there is nothing that can move. It is not as if there is no idea to move this country forward. As a matter of fact, there are several ideas but corruption has refused to allow these ideas to come into fruition.”

He said an instance was the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway which was constructed in three years, but the PDP could not fix it in 16 years despite budgeting money for the road every year.

Osinbajo commended Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for infrastructural renewal in the Epe area, assuring that serious attention would be given to roads connecting Lagos to Ogun State to facilitate ease of movement and boost commerce.

Politics / SDP Endorses Buhari by sanmiade001: 11:23am On Feb 08, 2019
SDP endorses Buhari

The Social Democratic Party on Thursday endorsed the candidature of President Muhammadu Buhari for the February 16 presidential election.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the party’s National Executive Council held in Abuja.

The party’s National Chairman, Chief Olu Falae, was absent from the meeting.

A former Minister of Information, Jerry Gana; and a former Cross River State governor, Donald Duke, are currently in court over the party’s presidential ticket.

But the party’s NEC, in a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting and read by the National Vice Chairman, Dr Abdul Ishaq, endorsed Buhari.

“The SDP has resolved to adopt President Muhammadu Buhari and vice-presidential candidate, Prof Yemi Osibanjo, of the All Progressives Congress as candidates of the party for the 2019 presidential election.

“Consequently, all members of the party are hereby enjoined to vote for President Buhari of the APC at the presidential election coming up on Saturday, February 16, 2019,” he said.

The NEC regretted that since the end of the party’s national convention on October 6, 2018 and Duke’s emergence as the presidential candidate, the party had been enmeshed in court cases which had significantly sapped the party’s energy, time and resources.

It said with less than 10 days to the presidential election, the party was caught in a web.

The INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner REC in Ondo state, Dr. Rufus Akeju, disclosed this at a press briefing held at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre, Alagbaka, Akure on the state of preparedness of the commission for the upcoming general elections in the country.

He explained that claims raised by stakeholders during the display of preliminary register of voters exercise, by the commission in the last quarter of 2018 were treated, as the names of dead persons that were still in the register as at then were identified for deletion.

Akeju disclosed that the presidential and National Assembly elections and that of the House of Assembly will hold in 3,007 polling units of the state on February 16 and March 2 respectively.

The Commissioner informed that the recruitment of all Ad-hoc staff to participate in the elections is almost completed

According to him, ” Serving Corp members constitute the bulk of Ad-hoc staff for the elections based on the existing MoU between INEC and the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC”.

He disclosed further that other categories of staff were sourced from the pool of Federal Tertiary Institutions and Federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies among others.

The commission, he said has been meeting regularly with security agencies to formulate strategies to identify and mitigate all potential triggers of violence and insecurity during and after the elections.

He said various measures are being adopted by the commission to mitigate the challenge of vote buying in the forthcoming elections through restriction of the use of smart phones and other photographic equipment in the voting cubicles among others.

Politics / APC Denies Influencing Police Posting Ahead Of Elections by sanmiade001: 9:21am On Feb 07, 2019
APC denies influencing police posting ahead of elections

The All Progressives Congress (APC)has debunked allegations by the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) that the police hierarchy had compromised police posting for the purpose of providing election security in its favour.
Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu, the APC National Publicity Secretary, in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja, described the allegation as laughable.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)reports that the CUPP had alleged that they were in possession of credible information that police posting for the purpose of providing election security had been compromised.
The coalition’s spokesperson, Imo Ugochinyere, said this in a statement that some APC leaders had been requested to make their choice of Commissioners, Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, SARS Commanders, and other strategic positions in the police.
“A nebulous group which parades itself as CUPP has made some laughable allegations on some police postings, particularly in Kwara State ahead of the forthcoming general elections.
“Ordinarily, the APC wouldn’t respond to a group of charlatans running errands for the embattled President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki.
“However, since the group has issued the statement as a decoy for him, we would direct our reactions to their paymaster,”he said.
Issa-Onilu reiterated that the APC National Chairman, Mr Adams Oshiomhole, and indeed other senior party leaders mentioned in the statement were too busy with the party’s Next Level campaigns.
He stressed that the APC leadership was too busy with engagements to be involved in the childish conspiracies and spurious allegations contained in the statement.
He, however, said that it was not within the rights or responsibility of any political organisation or group to dictate to agencies empowered by laws how to deliver on specific mandates.
The APC spokesman added that the party believed that leaders with a modicum of honour, should not tread on the path of cowardice by hiding under nebulous groups to make unsubstantiated allegations.
He also said that the APC however, understood that people’s fears were oftentimes their own weakness.
He said it was clear that Sen. Saraki, the PDP, and their cronies were recollecting their usual practice of manipulating state institutions to achieve their political ends.
According to him, the PDP is now scared of its own shadows.
“Let it be known that our party, the APC, has not copied such dubious template,”Issa-Onilu said.
He further reiterated that a new and progressive Kwara beckons through the votes of the people, adding that Kwara electorate would decide on the new political direction in the state.
“Kwara has suffered enough backwardness and under-development resulting from the selfish grip of a self-appointed leader in the state.
“In the next election the will of the Kwara electorate will prevail,”Issa-Onilu stressed.(NAN)

Southwest Muslims endorse Buhari

A Muslim group in the South West, Trust Alliance Foundation for Change, (TAFC), has endorsed the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, President Muhammadu Buhari for re-election in the forthcoming general election.

Its Coordinator, Dr. Morufu Afolabi, said, the endorsement of Buhari from its part was hinged on the policy-driven and ethical government that has been entrenched in the country since the coming on board of the President and his Vice, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.

At a news conference on Wednesday in Akure, the Ondo State capital with members from the south-west states, Afolabi berated the statement credited to the PDP candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar on the alleged plan to sell off of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, (NNPC) to his “friends”.

This he noted had revealed that the former Vice President cannot be trusted with governance.

He said “We base our decision to work and vote for the success of Buhari/Osinbajo in the forthcoming presidential election on the level of integrity and achievement in the fight against corruption, infrastructure development.

“We are convinced that the expected Modern Nigeria is achievable if we have the like of Buhari as Governors and Chairmen in all the 36 States and 774 LGAs in the federation.

Afolabi urged Nigerians, particularly the south-west electorate to ensure that President Buhari is re-elected during this month’s presidential polls, adding that the region would benefit more.

He said”Nigerians should look beyond Buhari/Osinbajo winning the 2019 Presidential Election and be more concerned about how to get similar credible candidates who will take over from them after expiration of their term in 2023.

The Ondo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Wahab Adegbenro said “Buhari will win the election hands down as no credible candidate is available to defeat him.

“As regards PVC, we have sensitised the public on the need to obtain their PVCs as it is the only mean to determine who govern them. We have informed the public to shun vote buying as this could be disastrous to the survival of our nationhood.”

Politics / Obasanjo Rallies Support For Buhari In America by sanmiade001: 10:59am On Feb 05, 2019
The re-election bid of President Muhammadu Buhari got a boost on Monday when Mr Olujonwo Obasanjo, son of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, stormed the United States to galvanise Nigerians to support Buhari for the Feb. 16 presidential election.

Obasanjo, who is the President, The Buhari Youth Organisation (BYO), said he was in the United States to solicit support for Buhari’s re-election among Nigerian in the diaspora and other members of the international community.

He explained that his support for the re-election of the president was due to his focus on youth empowerment and securing the future of the country for the Nigerian youth.

Obasanjo said while in the United States, he participated in several activities aimed to project the positive image of the administration and Nigeria to the international community.

“I participated at the United Nations International Day for Education, promoted by the Nigerian Permanent Mission to the United Nations and the Nigerian Government.

“Education is one of the tenets of the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, focusing on youth empowerment, youth participation and securing a better future for our generation and the generations to come.

“I also participated at the Nigerian American Business Forum where I met with many Nigerian professionals and their American counterparts. I went to Atlanta to visit our sister organisations there and to inaugurate many of our organisations.

“I also went to Detroit where we inaugurated some of the organisations. We also have many Buhari support organisations in New York as well. “We have Buharists in the United States and all over the world. So I am here to encourage them and to support them in every way we can,” he said. He said his support for Buhari was because he stood out among other presidential candidates because of his determination to bequeath a secured future for the youth of Nigeria.

“President Buhari has opened up the space for the youth of the country to participate politically, economically, and all other areas of the economy. “Recently, there was the women and youth campaign wing that was inaugurated by the president, which showed that he wants to ensure that the youth and the women have a strong voice in his re-election campaign.

“We believe that by doing that, Mr president wants us to be part of his administration going forward. Mr President is one who has made us believe again in our country, who has made us proud of our country.

“At the international stage, we are not being looked upon like a pariah nation. So I believe for Nigerians at home and Nigerians in the diaspora, they have seen that Mr president is the best candidate.’’

Mr Haruna Madisca, Organising Secretary of The Buhari Youth Organisation, also said Buhari was a man of integrity and the fear of God, which Nigeria needed at this time. He said Nigerians could not trust Atiku, saying his plan to sell the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) if elected was questionable. He added that Buhari had provided enabling environment for small businesses to thrive.

Madisca, who is President, Goron Oil and Gas Limited, said through the NNPC Renewable Energy Department, there is a $25 million investment in cassava in Kogi that would be producing 40,000 litres of bio-ethanol per day.

“The investment start-up on a turnkey basis is $25 million. The plant will employ over 2,500 people on a full time basis,” he said, saying such investment was at risk should NNPC be sold to private investors.

In its bid to enhance safety and security in Ondo state, the National President of Miyetti Allah, Alhaji Muhamadu Kirwa, has directed every cattle rearer in the state, to observe curfew from 7pm to 6am daily.

The president of the sect, who was not happy with the rate of criminal cases in the state, compelled his members to synergize with the state government by moving with their cattles during the approved stipulated hours.

Politics / Buhari: The Courage To Act: by sanmiade001: 11:17am On Feb 01, 2019
Buhari: The courage to act:

The die is cast; we have entered the final phase of the much awaited 2019 general election. It is a moment of decision for us the people of Nigeria. We must decide on those to lead us for the next four years and by implication, the part we will tow and the future of our dear country.

It is a moment we have the appraise the current situations and the challenges we are likely to face in nearest future and on the bases of such appraisal, choose who among the candidates can provide the required leadership for the much desired quantum leap to greatness. The quest for the right candidates begs the question what is competency?

What is the problem of Nigeria that we need a competent leader? Is our problem lack of financial resources? Is it lack of human capital? Is it lack of adequate policy formulation? Is it lack of infrastructures; is it even corruption? A person cannot solve a problem he/she is aware of, that is why medical doctors have to diagnose an ailment before making prescription. The problems with Nigeria are not the questions listed above but rather the deficiency and porosity of our justice system.

There is a vivid distinction between “I cannot steal and I will not steal”. Every human being created by God has the capability to steal/loot which is human nature and this explains why there is corruption in all countries of the world but the difference between other countries and ours is that while other nations are able to bring looters to justice, we are unable to bring looters to justice or bring justice to looters because our justice system is porous. Consequently therefore, looting becomes not just pervasive but a norm rather than aberration, thus our roads will not be tarred, and hospital will have no drugs, our universities never get funds for research etc yet these items will be budgeted for. Your guess is as good as mine where these monies will go to.

In the last presidential debate, I heard a candidate say she will bring the best brains to formulate policies for Nigeria. The thought in my mind as a response to her assertion was that if you bring world experts to formulate policies for Nigeria, the policies will be implemented in Nigeria by Nigerians and in the process monumental leakages will occur thus making the policies ineffective and in the absence of a good justice system nothing will happen to those responsible for these leakages.

At this point, one begins to wonder why our justice system is not working. In the wake of the trial and subsequent suspension of Justice Walter Onnoghen from the office of Chief Justice of Nigeria, critics of the Buhari administration had argued that the president was aloof from his government by not being aware of the plans to try the CJN; unfortunately these critics missed the essence of this act. That the president was not aware of the plans to try the CJN implies that President Buhari has given the institutions of justice the freedom and independence to do their work.

A free and independent justice system is the fundamental for economic and infrastructural development of any nation. To underscore this point, I will draw parallels from four countries namely United States, Israel, Brazil and South Korea.

In 1973, Spiro Agnew who was vice president to Richard Nixon was compelled to resign from office or be impeached for shady deals involving tax evasion, extortion, bribery and kickbacks from contractors when he was Mayor of Baltimore County and Governor of the State of Maryland. This happened because the American institutions of justice are independent and working, so much so that a sitting president is currently being investigated. If it was in Nigeria, we will all shout haba, this is witch hunting.

In Israel, former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert was imprisoned for 18 months for financial impropriety when he was a Mayor of Jerusalem and Minister of Trade. This happens because Israeli institutions of justice are independent and working

In Brazil President Dilma Rousseff was removed from office because of corruption and ditto for former South Korea President Park Geun-hye who in addition to being impeached was sentenced to 24 years imprisonment. In these cases, the institutions of justice are independent and working so much so that if a person steals, the justice system will eventually catch up with him/her. Can these happen in present day Nigeria? The answer is a big NO. It is very disheartening that the chief interpreter of the law, the custodian of the law, the repository and the depository of the law is not only accused of corruption and breaking the law but has admitted to have committed the act. What then is the fate of justice in such a scheme of things and hope for the common man?

The crucible of leadership states that everyone is tested by life, but only a few can extract strength and wisdom from their most trying experiences, they are the ones we call leaders. The suspension of the CJN is not only a very courageous act but also an act of leadership by President Buhari. The late American Senator John McCain defined courage not as the absence of fear, but the capacity to act in spite of fear. Most people in Buhari’s shoes would have been afraid to act because the elections are days away. They would have been afraid to act because the opposition parties will capitalize on it; they would have been afraid to act because ethnicity and religion would have been brought to bear on it; they would have been afraid to act because some lawyers who specialized in the defence of corrupt people would write articles and appear on TV to castigate the government and some civil societies would have reasons to appear on the street.

Akeredolu signs 2019 Appropriation Bill into law

Ondo State governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, on Thursday, 31st January, 2019 signed the 2019 appropriation bill into law.

The governor said that the main objective of the budget is to advance the State to the next level through completion of the ongoing projects across the State.

He said his administration will continue to take the issue of workers’ welfare seriously while soliciting the voluntary co-operation of all residents in the State to be faithful in the payment of their taxes and levies.

Governor Akeredolu who signed the appropriation bill into law at the Excos Chambers of the Governor's Office, Alagbaka, Akure, explained that the 2019 budget was prepared on the basis of the inputs garnered during Town Hall Meetings with various stakeholders across the State and the 5-point development agenda of his administration.

According to him, the 5-point development agenda is the major platform upon which the aspirations and dreams for the State shall be translated into tangible and life transforming projects or programmes in the 2019 fiscal year.

He said " The 2019 budget, aptly christened the Budget of Advancement, which has just been signed into Law, has a total size of N193.903 billion

"Of this amount, N10.369 billion representing 5.3% is for Debt Service; N9.568 billion representing 4.9% is for Statutory Transfers to OSOPADEC and the 10% share of Independent Revenue to Joint Account and Allocation Committee (JAAC) of Local Governments in the State

" The sums of N83.852 billion and N90.113 billion representing 43.2% and 46.5% are for Recurrent Expenditure and Capital Development respectively. "

The Governor noted that the government was not unaware of the challenges posed by inadequacy of funds to effective and impactful budget implementation.

He pointed that the challenges faced are not unconnected to the government's inability to grow Independent Revenue to a level where it can cover most of the state's recurrent expenditure from funds generated internally.

"It is also disheartening to note that some Development Partners, in recent times, have failed to meet up with their terms of agreement. " He stressed.

The Governor disclosed that his administration has resolved to sustain the use of ICT to help drive independent revenue generation so as to block loopholes.

He said : "Our administration intends to continue to approach all issues of governance with the required gravitas. We shall proceed with renewed determination, despite the stated challenges

"I wish to assure you that this budget will be implemented, faithfully, in our quest to deliver the dividends of democracy and good governance to our people

" We will make sure that we have good value for every naira spent. We anticipate creation of more jobs for our youths. We shall deepen our engagement in developing infrastructural facilities.

"Provision of functional education and qualitative health care services remain our priorities."
