akintom: Absence of evidence. Logically, absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. Obviously you don't agree, so tell me, how is absence of evidence the evidence for which any rational thought be built for absence of existence? If in a hide-and-seek game, the one whose turn is it to search searches for his/her peers and couldn't find them, absence of evidence occur, would that form a rational basis for the evidence of absence? Explain. |

akintom: You may have to read this simple piece again. If you understand what the piece explained in simple English, you wouldn't ask this question. Twenty four words to criticize instead of a Yes or No. From your definition(leave the unnecessary part) Atheism is just a Belief there is no God. Would I be wrong to say atheists, in defence of atheism, build their conclusions on "Faith" based premises? |

akintom: By Frank Fernandez
This is your first problem. Atheist don't say that there's no god. Atheists say that they don't believe the claim that God exists. These are two very different things.
One is the rejection of a positive claim. The other is a positive claim. Someone who says they don't believe in a God has no need to disprove the God claim.
The burden of proof lies on the person making the claim. If you claim that a god does exist then it's YOUR job to prove it. It's not the other person's job to prove it false.
If someone says the there is no God, they are now making a claim that does carry a burden of proof. But we atheists don't claim that God, in fact, does not exist. We simply reject the claims that one does.
So you can toss all the word salads you want. But you're not gonna pin the burden of proof on us. You claim that God is real, then it's your job to prove it. Plain and simple. Very good. So what atheism has is a 'BELIEF' and not a 'FACT' that there's no God? A simply yes will do. |

frank317: Nice one but the problem is... If God exists how what should he do about our differences? If you, an ordinary human can understand this fact about human? How then should our creator handle it... Why the silence? Nice one? If a thing meets the criteria of a feminine human, would it still be considered rational to describe his physical attribute as masculine? |

BaEnki: Hello!
Arguing for or against any choice of belief can easily renders anyone an ignoramus which I've chosen to avoid, our views on the same topic are always subjective and parallel, you can call my house white while I see it as black, though in my mind based on my on definition.
If you find peace in whatever you do, continue doing it. How would arguing for or against a belief make one an ignoramus? |

akintom: Which illogical proposition in atheism, are you referring to specifically? Very good. I'm impressed. It is not an illogical proposition in Atheism but Atheism is the illogical proposition. I've been thinking: 'If absence of evidence is not evidence of presence(or absence) on what ground is atheism logical?' The question is, how was atheism arrived at from rational thought? |
Christianity Etc › Re: You Will Become An Atheist, When You Understand The Bible by Sapiosexuality(m): 7:44pm On Mar 13, 2017 |
akintom: You're an evidence of how morbidly and intellectually dishonest, christards are.
It's obvious that you don't understand a word in logic. If not you wouldn't be asking atheists, how god idea is both primitive and idiotic. Don't make it simplistic. I'm not arguing for God or for theism but questioning the basis on which any deluded person calls other deluded people deluded. So, Mr Atheist, how is atheism a logical position? How is atheism not a worse display of arrogant ignorance? Don't try to use God as your helping hand. Show me you are better than theists lime you claim to be. If theists are dumb how does an atheist know and still calls himself an atheist? Go on, you have the floor. |

hopefulLandlord: Atheism in broad sense is lack of belief in deities
Atheism is in the less broadly sense, the absence of belief in the existence of deities
even less broadly, atheism is the rejection of belief that any deities exist.
In an even narrower sense, atheism is the position that there are no deities.
anyone who has one or more of that position is an atheist Would I be wrong to say an atheist is someone who believes there's no God? |

"“The religion of the future will be a cosmic religion. It should transcend a personal God and avoid dogmas and theology. Buddhism (a religion without a personal God) answers this description.” Of course they didn't. |

hopefulLandlord: all those "evidences" have been dealt with ad naseusm
absence of evidence is not evidence of presence either
you're defining atheism in a strawman kinda way, like I said atheism isn't a claim, its a counterclaim especially countering the theistic version of god
you might try searching Nairaland for posts about people like me claiming no god exists; just five people making the claim out of the many active members of this section would be enough A counterclaim built on a counter belief with counter faith. I don't need search anywhere to see claims made by atheists on the existence of any God. I'd be deceiving myself to pretend atheists don't say that. But on a rational level isn't a counter claim still a claim? If 'claims' are simply statements of truth doesn't atheism qualify as one? Maybe my learning is poor, please, what is a counter claim? |
Christianity Etc › Re: Isaac Newton On Atheism by Sapiosexuality(m): 8:18am On Mar 08, 2017 |
hopefulLandlord: YES!! I've never seen one that isn't a counterclaim
nope, I understood you perfectly
you're admitting theists don't have palpable proof that he/she/it exists, Atheists don't have palpable proof he/she/it doesn't exist
so? why does one group have the right to scream that he does and the other group can't also claim he doesn't But this one group speak of revelations from a supreme being, speak a strange language(speaking in tongues) which even our science have not shown to be forged, does some healings which their members attest to. Aren't their stories logical enough for a belief in whatever they believe in? I'm not holding brief for theism. Do we just assume they are all lying to themselves? Now let's look at the atheist. First, the absence of evidence is neither the absence nor presence of existence. The atheist's hold on truth here is on the absence of evidence. Is this logical. Shouldn't criticism and any position come with understanding? What's the 'understanding' behind atheism? hopefulLandlord: it simply follows bro
then they stop screaming and disturbing our sleep with their megaphones and speakers, they stop pushing religion and god into anything and everything, they stop discriminating based on religion, there would be one less reason for humanity to be divided Is this why atheism is more sensible? hopefulLandlord: I won't dignify the above with a reply Then what are we talking about. Isn't atheism a belief? Aren't beliefs built on faith even though there could be sometimes some logic behind them? How's atheism different or even smarter than theism? |
Christianity Etc › Re: Isaac Newton On Atheism by Sapiosexuality(m): 7:59am On Mar 08, 2017 |
hopefulLandlord: atheism is not a claim that no god exists
I’ve never heard an atheist scream that God doesn’t exist.
I have heard people scream — literally scream — that He does.
since this post of yours admits there's no palpable evidence that god exists
I’ll make a deal, those atheists will all stop saying God doesn’t exist and theists will stop saying He does exit. Deal? You've never heard an atheist scream that God doesn't exist? I don't know if you are speaking from a place of entertainment or logic. My post doesn't admit that a God doesn't exist, don't misinterpret it. It's simply that the evidence provided by theists is not really as palpable as we'd want it to be. It doesn't support the notion you are trying to tag to it. Deal? That line makes little sense. If the theists and atheists come to such agreement what then? First, you've never heard an atheist say that God doesn't exist but in conclusion we should strike a deal on its cessation. Genius! Of course atheism is not a claim that no God exists. Atheism is: A BELIEF that no God exists. Argued with the same FAITH any other Theist argues his religion. |

Newton was too smart for atheism. Same with Einstein.
These guys may not believe in God but to become Atheistic because of a lack of evidence can only be rational if their is presence of evidence.
Where is the evidence? How can any thinking man call self Atheist? While the theist may not provide a really palpable evidence how does the atheist logically become atheist? |
