Precisely why it is the height of foolishness to base an important position like the GK on the vagaries of maybe he will, maybe he won't.

Which is why they should be left to develop outside the pressure cooker - a 21 year old goalie making mistakes for Fulham is less likely to be savaged than if he drops clangers at Arsenal. Let them develop outside the limelight and then bring them in later on.

Regardless of the foregoing, it is clear that Wenger is terrible at picking young goalkeepers, or ones not in their prime - none of his picks so far have been successful, except for Lehmann who was in his prime.
Wenger should just get Enyeama. . . . .I think it's your best bet in the market.
The dude from Portugal(Eduardo) also looks good.

Webb was outstanding. . . . .
He did very well by not sending De Jong, Van Bommel and Robben off.
The game woulda been spoilt if he had done those - Holland made it difficult for Webb but i think he did well.

I can be quoted any day any time - Cesc coming into the team at a young age and making the grade is an extremely rare occurrence - the number of flops we’ve seen - from Aliadiere, Gilbert, Merida, Owusu, Senderos amongst others, it FAILS far more often than succeeds. To think you can do the same thing with goalkeepers is foolishness.
We are all guilty of this and it's a shame really.

When a 22-yr old is not performing, we quickly compare him to Cesc, Rooney or Messi which does not make sense.
Apart from those 3, i am struggling to name other players in their category. . . .and there musta been hundreds of thousands of players who didn't make the mark in their teens.

Some players won't develop into world class until their mid-20s and we just have to accept that.
Xavi was a nobody in his teens. He wasn't a starter for any top clubside but see what's turned into.
If he was an Arsenal player in his teens, Duduspace woulda condemned him to Burnley FC cos he's not as good as Luiz Ronaldo. grin

In the country of the blind, na 1 eye man go lead. . . .
the dutch, all thru, were far from spectacular - just a shade above average IMHO. The standard of play exhibited by Uruguay was way above that of the dutch never mind that 1 ended up in the finals and the other in 3rd place play-off; and Forlan's role in this cannot be emphasized any more than was visible.

If we had to do a catalog of memorable Forlan WC moments, we'd make a best-seller DVD.

Yet again. . . . your reference to wins/losses - it doesn't necessarily equate to a certain individual's performance!
Sneijder was horrible last night, i admit.
Their useless manager brought shame to Holland when the good name of Dutch football was besmirched by a display of thuggery!!
I think the events on the pitch last night woulda convinced analysts to vote Diego Forlan as the golden ball winner.

Stop spitting crap Sauron, if he had the nerve to pull the plug on Hargo making the WC squad. . What then happened to 'Rooney'?? Despite his injury woes? cool
How many times has SAF pull the plug on Rooney & Rio in senseless friendlies by saying they had this injury or that injury.
He couldn't have stopped Rooney from playing in the world cup. . .How is that possible?
The pride of England not to play in a world cup? Who am i debating with this monday morning? Spambot??

I could toss in my paycheck on the FACT that if Hargo had made that team, england WOULD still NEVER have made it past the group stage.
So England didn't make it past the group stage? grin grin grin grin
Ohhh, i just realised who i am debating with. . . .GAYnners and their incurable amnesia.

Fergie vetoed it?
Who the feck is Fergie to decide if a player's to go for a tourney or not? Fab was injured. . .but STILL made the Spanish team, why didn't Wenger veto it?
Ferguson is a LORD in English football. . . .He has the right to say which of his multi-million pound players can go or not go to the world cup.
If he gets crocked, he will be treated by Man Utd, not the medical staff of the 3 Lions.
I have supplied links that reiterated Fergie vetoed off the move. . . .I dunno why people can't see it and read it.

Eyebrows woulda been raised and his decisions would be questioned had he decide to drop Barry and take Hargo Sauron, don't hide behind Fergie's excuse cuz no one's buying it.
Why weren't eyebrows raised when he dropped Walcott? The pride of Arsenal?
Ashley Young and other decent players who didn't make it?
Why weren't eyebrows raised when he took an inconsistent Michael Carrick to the World Cup when Huddlestone was firing?

He wasn't FIT or permit me to say 'good enough' to make the team. simples!
Of course, he wasn't good enough. . . . .We saw what happened to the ones that ARE good enough.

More proof. . . .

OWEN HARGREAVES wants showdown talks with Alex Ferguson after being axed from both the Manchester United and England squads.
Hargreaves is due on United's pre-season tour of America and Mexico in July.
But before that he wants to know the extent of Ferguson's part in him being left out of England's 30-man World Cup squad - after initially being named in it.

The ex-Bayern Munich midfielder, capped 42 times, had hoped to play some part in a bid to prove to England coach Fabio Capello he was fit to be named in his initial squad.

As it was, Capello already had him penned in, having had Canadian-born Hargreaves' medical records assessed following nearly two years out for operations on both knees.

Yet that was before Capello spoke to United boss Ferguson on Monday of last week at a League Managers' Association dinner in London.
Ferguson is understood to have told Capello that Hargreaves was still a long way off playing at the highest level.
The following day, the Italian reversed his decision to include Hargreaves and reinstated ankle-ligament victim Gareth Barry

Sentiments?Nooooo Sauron, I don't think so. .

Rooney was in exceptional form, but lost it towards the tail end of the season due to injuries. . PLUS he's England's NO 1 striker! How can he NOT make the team?
Torres too was in good form, lost his testicles and has struggled since then, but in the spanish setup. . he's a key figure in the striking department, like it or no!
In a midfield boasting the likes of Lampard, Cole, Barry et al? Ahn Ahn Sauron, please tell me where a half-fit Hargo would fit-in?

If he didn't make Capello's final squad, there musta been reasons amigo.
I am saying he didn't make Capello's final squad because Fergie vetoed it off.  . . . . .
Jeeeez, all i am saying here is a player does not need to have played all year round to play in the world cup as long as he's fit before the world cup.
How much football did Luiz Ronaldo play before Japan/Korea 2002 when he bagged 8 goals in the tourney. In the 2 years leading to that world cup, he didn't kick a ball.

Lampard, Cole and Barry? None of them can hold a candle to Hargreaves in holding the midfield.
That was clear in 2006 World Cup when Hargo showed English fans he was the best midfielder in that position - that was when fans started taking him serious.
He was the best English player in that tournament and i am sure a half-fit Hargo woulda done better than a fully-fit Barry in South Africa.

Sauron
Agreed, he's 'probably' the best in the land. . but he hadn't balled in almost a year and had to struggle to remain fit, plus major competition awaited him in the MF. Taking him would be a 50:50 (he wouldn't have featured in any game, the way i see it. .just excess baggage) and that wouldn't be have been fair to whoever had to be dropped.
Why didn't the same excuse affect Gareth Barry or Fernando Torres?
All these things are just sentiments. . . .He hasn't played in almost a year means squat. . . .
Was he fit for the tournament? Yes!!!!

Rooney played all year and he wasn't fit for the tournament. . . .same as Torres, same as Gareth Barry.
What happened in the previous months has no bearing here. . . .It is his fitness that matters as at the time invitations were handed out.
Capello was this close to taking him to the WC. . . Maybe Hargo wouldn't have started matches initially but he woulda played a major role in the K.O.stage when Ozil and Mueller washed the floor with Barry and Lampard.

When ITALY won d previous WC nobody was debating anything  Serie A.

8 goals in 7 matches isnt exactly WC winning stuff . . .in 1994, Yekini, Amuneke (2) Amokachi (2), Finidi, Sia1, scored for us, making 7 goals into d 2nd round.

Ronaldo scored more goals in 2002  than the whole of Spain . . .pathetic !!!
Shut up your rotten mouth and let us hear word.

Spain were the best side in the tourney. . . . .How do you expect them to score when teams parked the bus for them?
Even the mighty Germans were reduced to Stoke FC trying to disrupt their fluency - Holland came with their plans to kick and batter the Spaniards.
Spain were the only side that stuck to their tradition of passing the ball well and playing the beautiful football.

The Germans were scared of Spain - they had to change their tactical plan and came with only one plan of counter attacking to beat Spain.
They were negative until they conceded in the dying moments and it was too late by then.
If the Germans were good enough, they didn't need to change their winning way to play Spain. . . . .
There's no team better than Spain in the tourney - they played football the way it should be played and won. . . .

They are the deserved Champions. . . . The most deserved in the last 2 decades if i may add.

My man, thanks bro. . .had to do stuff with madam. . .
I don't believe Hargo woulda gone to SA.It's ridiculous that someone who played only 30 seconds in a season would be in contention for a world cup place.
Ma guy, Hargo was on his way to South Africa despite his 30 secs of Football. . . . .
Torres went to the world cup, didn't he? How many games did he play in the last few weeks of the season? NIL!!!

Capello knew Hargo's quality would be needed in the England's midfield that lacked positionally-disciplined players like Hargreaves.
SAF vetoed the move off and Capello was forced to take an unfit Gareth Barry instead.

The English media couldn't have done squat had Capello taken Hargo. . . . .Why didn't they burn the tower bridge when Walcott and Ashley Young were dropped? Hargreaves is the best holding midfielder in the land - the only question was his fitness and he couldn't have been worse than what we saw in Gareth Barry @ the Mundial.

I beg to difer, Netherland came to play spain man to man and not stand back and allow them to pass the ball around as if they are on the training ground, they had their game plan, and it worked for them until the last minute when the mumu web destroyed everything. The Netherland did not realise on time that they were playing against 13 men includin mumu web.
Play Spain man to man seems like NEGATIVE FOOTBALL to me which also equates ANTI-FOOTBALL.
Why not come with your own strength and win a football game.
Only teams with limited abilities come to the pitch to come and do man to man marking. . . . .Something known for the Stoke, Bolton and Blackburn when they are playing Arsenal, Chelsea or Man Utd.

Anti-football by coming to disrupt the fluency of the Spaniards with gruesome fouls and order sorts of gamesmanship.

Justice has been done - with the violence perpetrated by the Dutch, there was no way they deserved to win the title.

Fabregas came on and made a decisive contribution for the goal.  cool
Cesc had to make up for his goof in the 2nd half. . . . .
He shoulda squared the ball to Villa instead of toe-poking the ball with his left foot.

I am glad Football won in the end. . . . .
It woulda been a disgrace if the useless Dutch side had won this match.
