A former Minister of Defence and ex-Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party, Haliru Bello, has asked for the permission of a Federal High Court in Abuja to travel abroad for medical treatment. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, on January 5, 2016, arraigned Bello, his son, Abba, and a firm, BAM Project and Properties Limited, before the court on four counts of money laundering involving the sum of N300m allegedly meant security. The prosecution led by Mr. Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), says BAM Project and Properties belongs to Abbah. The EFCC alleged that instead of using the N300m to provide “safe houses”, the purpose for releasing to them by the Office of the National Security Adviser in March 2015, the accused allegedly expended it on the PDP’s presidential campaign. Bello’s passport and that of his son had been seized by the court as part of the bail conditions imposed by the trial judge, Justice Ahmed Mohammed, in his ruling on January 7. The ex-minister’s lawyer, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), informed the judge on Thursday that he had filed an application seeking an order of the court tentatively releasing his client’s passport to enable him travel abroad on health grounds. Agabi did not disclose the nature of his client’s medical condition and the country where he intended to travel to for the treatment. www.punchng.com/n400m-fraud-ex-minister-bello-seeks-treatment-abroad/ |

Former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, on Wednesday failed to appear before the ad hoc committee of the House of Representatives investigating the crude oil swap contracts of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation. The former minister neither appeared in person nor sent any representations to the hearing of the committee, chaired by an All Progressives Congress lawmaker from Kwara State, Mr. Zakari Mohammed. The committee had summoned Alison-Madueke and a former Managing Director of the Pipelines Product Marketing Company, Mr. Haruna Momoh, in connection with the lifting of crude oil worth $24billion in exchange for refined petroleum products. Two crude trading firms, Duke Oil and Trafigura had lifted the crude between 2011 and 2014 without valid contracts. The summons were issued after three former Group Managing Directors of the NNPC, Mr. Austin Oniwon, Mr. Andrew Yakubu and Mr. Joseph Dawha, had informed the committee that Alison-Madueke “approved” the contracts without signing any valid agreements with the firms. But, on Wednesday, the former minister shunned the committee. Momoh too did not come. Instead, he sent his younger brother, Mr. Suleiman Momoh, to inform the committee that he was ill and would not be able to appear for the hearing. Mohammed was left bewildered when he called for appearances and realised that Alison-Madueke was absent. He said the committee would take the “appropriate steps” to address the absence of the former minister, but he did not elaborate on the nature of the steps. Mohammed stated, “Anybody who knows the former minister and Momoh should tell them that they are daring the parliament and we will take the appropriate measures against them.” However, Momoh’s younger brother, Suleiman, rose to register an excuse that his elder brother was ill. “He is ill and he will not be able to attend this session of the committee “, Suleiman added. The committee overruled Suleiman and directed him to take the message back to Momoh that he must appear before the panel www.punchng.com/24bn-contracts-diezani-ex-ppmc-md-momoh-shun-reps-panel/ |
this is part of the problem we are facing. so if this man won he will surely take from the taxpayer money to settle his debt and deprive the people of the promise he made to them |

Some members of the House of Representatives on Sunday asked their colleagues to stop interfering with the crisis in the Senate involving Senator Kabiru Marafa and his colleagues. The House members noted that the Senate and the House were independent arms of the National Assembly, each having its internal rules of engagement. They said this implied that none of the arms should meddle in the internal affairs of the other, since they could individually resolve any internal crisis without seeking outside help. Marafa had lately accused the leadership of the Senate, under Senator Bukola Saraki, of using the distortions in the 2016 budget as an opportunity to settle political scores. But last week, a group of House members, including the Chairman, House Committee on Basic Education, Mr. Zakari Mohammed, cautioned Marafa to be mindful of his choice of words. The members had claimed that Marafa was disparaging the institution of the legislature with his utterances. However, on Sunday, 15 members of the House replied the Mohammed group, saying that the latter should steer clear of the crisis in the Senate. Meanwhile, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Sabi Abdullahi, has said he would not make any comment on the reason the upper chamber failed to deliberate on the Ethics Committee’s report on the spokesperson for the Senate Unity Forum. The SUF spokesperson, Senator Marafa, was accused on the floor of the Senate penultimate Tuesday by two senators of granting press interview to allegedly mislead the public about the National Assembly, thereby bringing the image of his colleagues to disrepute. Ruling on oral petition by Marafa’s accusers, Senate President, Bukola Saraki, asked the Ethics Committee to investigate their claim and report back to the plenary within a week. When contacted on Sunday to know why the report of the panel that investigated Marafa was not considered, Senate spokesperson, Abdullahi, said he would not make any comment on the issue. He described the issue involving the probe of Marafa as internal affairs of the Senate. Abdullahi said himself and other members of the red chamber were currently busy and working hard to make available to Nigerians, a budget that everyone would be proud of. He said, “There is nothing to make comment on, because we are very busy at the moment working on the budget which l think should be of more importance to an average Nigerian.” www.punchng.com/reps-warn-members-against-interfering-in-senate-marafas-row/ |
