Senate President, Bukola Saraki, declared in Lagos today that section 4 of the Anti-frivolous petition Bill now popularly known as ‘Anti-Social Media law’ would not see the light of day at the Senate. Saraki stated this while delivering the keynote address at the StateCraft Masterclass series at Social Media Week, held in Lagos. Saraki, according to a statement by his Special Assistant on New Media, Mr. Bankole Omishore, emphasised the growing influence of social media users in Nigeria’s political environment. He then encouraged the audience to continue to contribute to the development of Nigeria through their dialogue and debate on social media. The senate president said, “Without the involvement of social media, there is no way that we would have moved from a non-performing government because now everything is out in the open unlike years ago.” Saraki commended the online community, which he described as the real ‘Chairmen of INEC,’ for sourcing election results from polling stations during the general elections, and ensured that the manipulation of vote counts. He said, “Though we had the numbers. It is really thanks to social media that votes counted because you shared the results as they happened.” The Frivolous Petitions Bill, sponsored by the Deputy Senate Leader, Bala Ibn Na’Allah, passed second reading on the floor of both chambers of the National Assembly in December last year while the Senate had fixed March this year for the public hearing. The senate president called for continued cooperation and conversation between the government and the public via social media, and noted that the recent National Assembly Interactive session with Civil Society Organisations was a huge success. www.punchng.com/anti-social-media-bill-wont-be-passed-saraki/ |

The Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, says the state government can transform the National Museum in the state to a cultural edifice of international standard, as well as rehabilitate other federal infrastructure, if the Federal Government partners the state. Ambode, who spoke at the Lagos House, Ikeja, during a visit of the Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, added that he would ensure the speedy transformation of the museum once the Federal Government was ready to collaborate with Lagos. He said considering the strategic importance of culture and tourism to the identity of people, Lagos and the Federal Government needed to work together to boost the essence of culture, improve on the economy, and develop the nation. He said, “Just the same way we have collaborated with the police, we will collaborate with you to give a facelift to the infrastructure of the Federal Government in Lagos. We will do it because it will eventually be to the benefit of Lagosians. “Talking precisely about the National Museum at Onikan, we want to put up a modern-day museum of international standard towards the Lagos at 50 celebration next year. “We are not only doing it for Nigeria, but also for the future of our cultural heritage.” The governor, who lamented that some Nigerian languages were gradually going into extinction due to the lack of preservation of cultural values, said with the renewed commitment of the federal and state governments, issues of youth unemployment could be adequately addressed using culture, tourism, arts, sports and entertainment. Earlier, Mohammed said he was in Lagos to solicit the support of the government to collaborate in jointly moving the state and the country forward in areas of culture and tourism. www.punchng.com/ambode-promises-to-rebuild-national-museum-fg-facilities/ |

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday welcomed an offer by the Islamic Development Bank to organise a financing round-table in Abuja to mobilise more funds for investment and development of infrastructure in Nigeria. According to a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President expressed his delight at the offer at a meeting he had with the IDB President, Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Ali, in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The President is currently on an official visit to Saudi Arabia. Ali was said to have assured Buhari that the IDB will work with its traditional partners such as the Saudi Fund, the Kuwait Fund, Arab Bank for Development in Africa and the Abu Dhabi Fund, to increase the quantum of funding available to Nigeria. Welcoming the offer, Buhari restated his government’s determination to revamp and diversify the Nigerian economy rapidly. He said, “The days of Nigeria as a big oil producer with plenty of money are gone. We need all the support we can get to diversify our economy as quickly as possible. “We also need to rehabilitate our infrastructure, develop the domestic capacity to feed ourselves and export the surplus.” The President welcomed the plan by the IDB to fast track the take-off of the Bilingual Education Program, aimed at integrating the Almajiri system of education with Western education in Nigeria. The IDB has already provided $98m for the Bilingual Education Program in Adamawa, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, Osun and Yobe. The bank plans to support similar projects in other states of Nigeria. www.punchng.com/islamic-bank-offer-to-nigeria-excites-buhari/ |

The Federal Government is finalising updates of the national database on water supply and sanitation for all states in Nigeria including the Federal Capital Territory, the Minister of Water Resources, Mr. Suleiman Adamu, has said. According to the minister, the finalised database would contain household survey on access to water supply and sanitation across the country. Adamu spoke during a workshop on the third national urban water sector reform project launch and state water agencies performance assessment held in Abuja. He said, “Our ministry is currently finalising the update of the national database on water supply and sanitation facilities, as well as household survey on access to water supply and sanitation. These pools of data will be hosted in the National Water Resources Data Bank that will serve as a repository of data and information for all water resources in our ministry. “It is my hope that the performance data of water agencies will also come into the databank and I wish to assure stakeholders in the sector that we will make efforts to strengthen and sustain this initiative.” Explaining the objectives of the National Water Sector Reform Project, Adamu stated that it was designed not only to fix water infrastructure but also the institutions and people that were in-charge of them. “This is because we need to assist our water agencies to get out of their stagnation cycle of poor services, dissatisfied customers, low revenue, weak finances, neglect of maintenance and assets deterioration,” he added. Earlier in her address, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Water Resources, Mrs. Rabi Jimeta, spoke on the importance of data gathering and stressed that adequate collection of information would afford the various water agencies the opportunity to ascertain their strengths and weaknesses. She said, “Accurate data collection is essential in maintaining the integrity of a system for adequate planning as well as for policy formulation and implementation. So a formal data gathering process is necessary for it ensures that data gathered are both defined and accurate, as subsequent decisions based on reasons embodied in the findings are valid.” “it is on this note that our ministry places premium on this workshop as it will afford all the water agencies the opportunity to ascertain their strengths and weaknesses as a first step towards addressing them for enhanced service delivery to the citizens.” www.punchng.com/35783-2/ |

A spokesperson for ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Doyin Okupe, says the choice of a former governor of Borno State, Modu Sheriff, as the acting national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party is wrong. Okupe said it was unfortunate that the PDP was in the habit of making grave errors in its choice of leadership. He said with the emergence of Sheriff as the national chairman of the PDP, the opposition party risked total disintegration. In an article published on his official Facebook page on Wednesday, he said although Sheriff was his long- standing political associate, the former governor lacked the capability to hold the party together. Okupe said, “Some of us have vowed not to leave the party (PDP). We still will not leave the party. We will continue to engage all who care to listen and seek help from everyone ready to revive this severely challenged sickened giant. “For a morose political party, thanks to the overwhelming and effective propaganda machinery of the party in power, this may yet be the mortal wound that may cause the eventual depletion of its long perplexed following. “But if it is the divine will of God that our present masters must kill the PDP, then by the grace of God, we shall yet tarry at the graveside to bid it farewell.” He lamented that making wrong judgments had become a trait of the party. “The capability of our party, the PDP, and its leadership to make grave errors in judgment is legendary. What is intriguing is that even when the party is out of power, that tendency seems not to reduce. “Alhaji Sheriff is a long-standing political associate of mine and a very astute politician of, perhaps, a sublime class. But for the post of the national chairman of the PDP, he is a wrong candidate and (he is) also coming in at a wrong time,” he said. Okupe said with the crisis rocking the PDP, the emergence of Sheriff might deplete the membership base of the opposition party. The former presidential spokesperson listed impunity, presumptive reasoning, restrictive consultative process as the ‘diseases’ killing the PDP. Okupe said the PDP leaders who supported the emergence of Sheriff hinged their argument on the fact that, being a wealthy politician, he (Sheriff) would be favourably disposed to fund the activities of the party. He, however, said other leaders within the party felt that Sheriff would compound the problems of the party and bring ‘a crushing weight of burden capable of fatally destroying the few strands of moral fibres in the party’. www.punchng.com/well-be-at-pdps-graveside-says-okupe/ |
