Ifeoma Onumonu provides crucial assist as Gotham FC upend Washington Spirit Ifeoma Onumonu (Gotham FC)
The Nigerian forward provided the much-needed assist which resulted in Gotham FC’s winning goal in the course of her side’s 2-3 win over Washington Spirit in the United States of America (USA) National Women Super League (NWSL) game on Sunday.
Trinity Rodman scored the first goal of the game for the host, Washington Spirit in the 13th minute.
Nahomi Kawasumi equalised for Gotham FC eleven minutes later while McCall Zerboni scored Gotham FC’s second goal to give the visitors a halftime lead.
Ashley Sanchez even the score-line for Washington Spirit in the 56th minute.
Fourteen minutes from full time, Ifeoma Onumonu provided the all-important assist for Margaret Purce who converted for the winning goal.
Onumonu has scored three goals for Gotham FC with two assists this season.
She was part of the Super Falcons squad for the US Summer Series but wasn't release by her Club for the team’s training camp in Austria for the Aisha Buhari Cup.
Gotham FC occupied the fourth position on the US NWSL league table with 16 points from nine games.
They will welcome Chicago Women in their next encounter on July 25, 2021.

AkinDS: Wouldn't be surprised if another better team nicks her. I think she has the potential to become a very good player. For sure, she would definitely make a move very soon. |

AkinDS: Thanks for the videos, by the way. If I had to hazard a pick between Christy and Regina, I will go with Regina. Faster, more aggressive in the tackle and is a better ball distributor. I also like her overall awareness and command of the midfield. I doubt if she would last with FC Minsk, as I feel she would be poached soon for a better league. She was about to sign for Madrid CFF in 2019 December but Edo Queens crashed the move. Just her performance during the Olympics qualifiers got the Spanish coach to like her.. Minsk FK can't risk losing her for two games within this Austra camp period that's why she wasn't release, since they haven't secured their UEFA Women's Champions League slot yet, Belarus have just two (2) UWCL spot

AkinDS: Yes, but looking forward, Patricia is a lot faster than her and would be the first pick at the LB position. I prefer her at CB, with her height and ability to read the game extremely well.
The weak spots are DM (with Halimat out for a while and Rita Chikwelu not the fastest out there), not sure who can really map into that position well enough. The perfect trio in the midfield for me would have been Halimat, Rash and Toni. We really need to look for someone who can pick up that mantle, especially, defensively. Would have liked to see the Benfica SL girl Christy Ucheibe or Regina Otu tryout there. Ashleigh Plumptre is coming in as a Center Back especially Onome Ebi spot.. I only mentioned the other positions she could possibly play well... As for the Left Back Spot Patricia George have got a lot of potential ahead of Glory Ogbonna and Co...... Defensive Midfield, Rita Chikwelu still remains Randy first pick, Benfica SL Christy Ucheibe and Minsk FK Regina Otu are the other options... Halimatu Ayinde is Center Midfielder/Box-to-Box, though can play the DM very well being versatile player... |

AkinDS: Onome is predominantly left footed, even though she is ambidextrous and can play as LCB and RCB. For many years when she partnered Osi Ohale, she played as LCB. If Plumptre is to come in, because the coach might be thinking of grooming her for the LCB (she is much more younger than Onome), she will have to play as LCB, since she is left footed. The left backs have been Ngozi Ebere, Glory Ogbonna and Patricia George (in chronological order). I believe Patricia George will take over the role once she heals. Ashleigh is Left Footed, Can play Left Back and Midfield too... |

BascoVanVeli: They have both been our pairing for years. Ohale is in camp. I believe Onome has been given time off. Since 2010 AWCON down till date... The only break between them was Josephine Chukwunonye during 2014 AWCON and 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup.... |

JohnBullMySon: left back or centre?
Plumptre might bench Ohale at the back. Plumptre bench who?? Hahaha Osinachi Ohale is Coach Randy Waldrum no.1 center Back, they both have known each other since 2014, Osinachi played for him during her stint with Houston Dash, he calls Ohale her Best Defender, right now Ohale and Ebi are still our first choice Center Back, Ebi and Ashleigh plays thesame position so they're like to like Changes, Ashleigh is automatically Ebi replacement with Zogg coming in for Ohale.. |

JohnBullMySon: Baba be calming down . Ghana ain't joking too.
Tony Payne and Alozie are really dangerous. But Oshoala is still out main threat. Oparanozie is back. But I doubt if Plumptre will be at the back together with Zogg. She might go to LB or bench while Onome and Plumptre partner. I think that's a better option.
Please Schemerkhiz, who was our LB during the summer series? I can't recall the person again. During the Summer Series, Glory Ogbonna was our left back against Portugal and Jamaica while against the US, Glory Ogbonna moved to the center Back position alongside Ebi and Okeke with Tony Payne playing as Left Wing Back... |

JohnBullMySon: You seem to really rate this lady. Does she stand a chance of taking over the gloves?? All the presents Goalkeepers stand the chance of claiming the no.1 spot.. and also making the 3 list of Goalkeepers for each tournament. I have followed her game up right from her U17 days in 2014, she was arguably the best young goalkeeper until Chiamaka Nnadozie came up.. the competition for a starting berth between her and Nnadozie came up in 2017 from the U20 team she was ahead not until her costly error against Morocco at the Sam Ogbemudia Stadium and Chiamaka Nnadozie took her chance. It's going to be nice having her and Nnadozie as Falcons young Goalkeepers with so much age on their sides, good height advantage, Then big Sister Tochukwu Oluehi offering the Experience along side 31yrs Yetunde Balogun from the US Chiamaka Nnadozie ....20yrs Onyinyechi Okeke ....22yrs |

IFK Kalmar of Sweden 28yrs old Forward Ebere Orji
She's one of the Super Falcons forward I know that is quick but when she's running with the ball it look as if she's heavy and she isn't running but she is actually running fast..
Miss those days when she used to play from the Left Wing...
Last time she played for the Superfalcons was actually the 2016 AWCON qualification game against Senegal (Home and away) where she played Center Forward..
Though Thomas Dennerby invited her on a few occasion pro to the AWCON in 2018 but didn't make the team.

Schemerkhiz: Umeå IK recruits national team players - ready after a long process: "Incredibly happy"
Umeå IK strengthens the squad. The club has signed Nigerian national team player Glory Ogbonna, who has signed a contract for next season. A recruitment that landed after a long process.
- Glory will be an important piece of the puzzle in our team building, says Umeå IK's coach and sports director Samuel Fagerholm.
The work of recruiting Glory Ogbonna actually started already last winter and the idea was that the 22-year-old would join UIK before this season. Administrative problems stopped the process then - but before the summer transfer window opens, all necessary details are fixed.
Ogbonna is currently at a training camp with Nigeria's national team, "Super Falcons", in Austria and will arrive in Umeå when the camp ends on July 24.
- Glory will be an important piece of the puzzle in our team building both this autumn and for the coming season. It feels really good to be able to present her as our player after a very long process, says Samuel Fagerholm in a press release and continues:
- We strongly believe that Glory will be able to add quality to the team, but it will also require a certain amount of adaptation time to a new country and a new team with a possibly different style of play. Her experience from international matches will help her in that adjustment on the pitch. We will benefit from Glory as a football player in both the short and long term.
Glory Ogbonna most recently came from a game with Edo Queens Football Club in the Nigerian top league. In the national team, she is constantly recurring in the squad where she, for example, started in the back line in the country's three training internationals in June against Jamaica, Portugal and the USA.
She has also represented the U20 national team at the World Cup 2016 and 2018.
- Playing abroad has always been my big goal and I am extremely happy and grateful for the contract with Umeå IK FF. I have talked a lot with Rita Chikwelu and with some other national team players who play in Sweden. Everyone says that Umeå plays a technical and fast football with good passing games and I like that, says Glory Ogbonna in the press release.
When asked what her strengths are, Ogbonna says:
- I am quite all-round and can play in different places in defense and midfield, but I will give everything to help my team regardless of position. I like to train and will do my best to be as good a player as possible. Don't know if it's a strength but I really hate losing (laughs). The goal is to play with UIK in the damallsvenskan next year and I have a strong belief that we will succeed together.
Perpetua "Peppe" Nkwocha in Sunnanås blue shirt.
Umeå IK has a history when it comes to players from Nigeria where Rita Chikwelu played six seasons in the club 2010-2016 and then has been followed by Ogonna Chukwudi (2011-13) and Ebere Orji (2017 and 2019).
In the press release, UIK sends a special thank you to Stig Lindmark and Perpetua "Peppe" Nkwocha who via their contact networks made the transition possible. Former Sunnanå - also national team player Nkwocha lives in Skellefteå and has good control of Nigeria's football players.
- There are different ways of playing between Nigeria and Sweden and for a defender it probably takes a little more training in the position game. It is important to be patient, but I know Glory's qualities well and know that she will be very valuable to Umeå. I am very happy for both Glory's and UIK's sake and look forward to being in Glory's vicinity, I will support her in every way I can, says Peppe Nkwocha in the press releases This move is really necessary for her and her likes in NWPL so she can improve, UMEA ik is a big Club in Sweden and a good place for her to develop.. |
