The founders of all these paramedical fields were medical doctors.
Now on the issue of doctors still heading those fields,it is important,especially for the sake of the patient it remains so,cos its only the doctor that has an all round knowledge of all the fields in medical practice and can marry d different inputs for accuracy or near accuracy of d outcome.
For example,a doctor can request for a lab investigation.Now,when d result comes out,it might not tally with the clinical condition of the patient.This might just be a clerical error or error from the reagents,machines,etc used to conduct d test.
For example,a patient might have an accident or go for surgery and lose a lot of blood.The result of the test to check for the patients blood level after d surgery might come out with a higher level of blood compared to even d level b4 d patient went for surgery.
On d request form,d doctor has written out d reason he is requesting for d investigation.Now,d lab man might not correlate it with d patient's present condition and therefore sign and dish out d result like that.
If you rely on that,d patient might die in your presence.
It is only d doctor that has d training to be able to detect that,nooo,this result doesn't match d present condition of this patient.
I don't know how to explain this well for you,cos I just gave you a single scenario,using lab results as an example.

you have just written thrash, this is 21st century not the era of dark room X-ray technicians and MED lab attendant who know only how add 2mls of reagent to sample and get result. You think the 5years + internship and NYSC spent learning anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, haematology, chemical pathology, medical microbiology and others is to only know how to Carry out test without understanding of patients clinical information?. Do you have an idea of what is quality control and quality mannagemt system for laboratory results?, a medical lab scientist that cannot tell when there is equipment or reagent error and when result doesn't tally with patients clinical query is not better than a market woman. Travel out and see physiotherapist heading orthopedic unit and training even Resident doctors, biomedical scientist given presentations to specialist and consultant on newer laboratory test and how they can help patients while you are here fighting to be head of catering, engineering and even cleaning units

Uniben is very transparent with its admission process, infact should be one of the most transparent federal university when it comes to admission. @OgaInnocent, your half baked knowledge of other professions structure in the health sector especially medical laboratory gave you out as a student with little or no knowledge of how things work.
First there is nothing like HND Medlab technologist or technicians, MLT is studied in school of health and not polytechnic and it is just for 3years while Medical lab science is 5yrs+ 1yr internship + 1yr NYSC = 7years.
No polytechnic anywhere in Nigeria offers any medical lab course for the records, it is like saying RN nursing is offered in polytechnic.
Coming from a microbiology graduate, I can see the reason for the hate against Medlab scientist, you claim to be knowledgeable in medical microbiology; what happens to Heamatology, chempath, histopath?. Let a microbiologist be left alone in the Blood bank for 2hrs if at least 5patients won't be reported back to be having adverse transfusion reaction from incompatible blood issued.
Also no consultant heads Medlab services, it is a separate division of its own with experts having advanced training in their respective specialties. In UBTH for instance, we have 3 chempath Medlab scientist with their PHD in the lab and years of expertise. The consultant handles the patient side and make his request for any investigation which he has no Business again until results get to him.
Doctors are far more overpaid than any other category of workers in public service , that is a known fact. I wonder where you got your notion that they are underpaid. You can't just convert salary in Canada to Naira equivalent, how much are nurses paid in Canada compared to their Nigerian counterpart?
On the issue of consultancy, there is postgraduate college of pharmacy, nursing incase you are ignorant of it and no one is saying after working for donkey years you are automatically made a consultant. Live and let live, I wonder why you guys don't want others to progress in their career path, only doctors are trained at postgraduate level (residency) by the government and fully paid throughout the duration of training, others are not asking for government to fund their postgraduate program and you won't let them be.
You have physiotherapist heading orthopedic units in USA and other countries where you want to be paid with their salary scale but won't allow how multidisciplinary health approach been practised over there to be implemented in Nigeria,. Hypocrisy at its peak.

Good riddance. The government should just make sure they leave the keys to the labs, pharmacy and stores. Once that is done, no one will even notice their absence. The pathologist will do a better job than the lab scientist, the radiologist will takeover the radiographer, 300 level medical students can take over nurses and anyone that can read can dispense drugs, even 100lvl medical students can be posted to d pharmacy to b supervised by a more senior medical student, at least to get a feel of the hospital environment.

Useless people. They should understanf that there is no shortcut in life, if u want to earn and be treated like doctors, then take the next jamb form. Rubbish.

Another medical student, you can easily spot them. Your Resident doctors and consultants know how the strike cripple their work. It is only students like you that think you can run the hospital on your own. Radiologist that 50% don't know How to operate an X-ray machine let alone a CT scan. Let the pathologist come and section tissues with microtome in histo lab if he won't cut his hand with blade or prepare Cyto slides of paper smear when they don't even know the procedure for general H&E staining. Better go read your anatomy before you fail MB
