Business › Nigeria, Dubai, Iceland: All Better Bets Than US by scopusng(op): 10:10pm On Feb 28, 2013
Investors who have done well buying U.S. stocks this year could be doing even better with Nigeria.

The Nigerian market, in fact, has outperformed American equities by a large margin, up more than 20 percent this year versus the U.S. gain of a still-respectable 6 percent.

Ditto for Dubai, Iceland, Vietnam and Abu Dhabi. Taken together, the countries form an unlikely quintet that leads the global equity markets and poses opportunities for investors wary of all the stomach-churning turmoil closer to home.

Crime › 4-year Old Girl Raped To Death by scopusng(op): 5:25pm On Feb 28, 2013
BY CHIDI NKWOPARA, OWERRI.
The Anti Crime Squad of Imo State Police Command has arrested a 30-year old man, Onyebuchi Ejimkonye, for allegedly raping a four-year old girl, Chinasa Dickson, to death.

The poor little girl was on her way to school when she was ambushed by Ejimkonye, who mercilessly subjected her to a marathon sex in a nearby bush and she died on the spot.

The police equally rescued a 15-year old girl, Miss Odinaka Chukwu, who was abducted by suspected ritualist and taken to a shrine a forth-night ago.

Parading Ejimkonye in Owerri, Thursday, the State Commissioner of Police, CP, Mr. Mohammed Musa Katsina, however said that although the ritualist is now on the run, his identity has been known and the police is trailing him.

On the death of little Chinasa, the CP explained that some villagers, who were passing close to the scene of the crime sensed that something fishy was going on and sought to find out what it was.

“Ejimkonye, who hails from one of the communities in Oru East local council area of Imo State, was on the verge of burying the little girl in a shallow grave when he was nabbed by the villagers”, the CP said.

According to the Imo police boss, the villagers quickly alerted his men, adding that the suspect was arrested on the spot.

“The lifeless body of the unfortunate child has been recovered but post mortem examination was yet to be conducted”, the CP recounted with grief.

Answering questions from journalists, Ejimkonye gave a graphic account of how he committed the heinous crime but blamed the entire incident on “devil’s work”.

In a similar development, Mr. Katsina disclosed that a gang of dare devil kidnappers, led by one Alaribe Martin Uche, from Ngor Okpala local government area, has been smashed.

“Our operative, on a credible tip off, stormed their hideout. On seeing the police, the hoodlums engaged our men in a gun duel. This led to the killing of Alaribe on the spot and the recovery of their operational vehicle”, Katsina said.

Additionally, the Imo police chief said a 75-year old man from Aniocha, Delta State, who was kidnapped in Ohaji/Egbema local council area, has been rescued after exchange of fire with the hoodlums.

“One of them, who fled in the process but later resurfaced, has been arrested. His confessional statement took the police to Rivers State, where his colleagues in crime were arrested”, the CP said.

Politics › FG Tells Nigerians To Brace Up For New Higher Electricity Bills. by scopusng(op): 7:50am On Feb 22, 2013
The Acting Director-General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), Mr Benjamin Ezra Dikki, has advised electricity consumers to expect higher electricity tariffs soon.

He made this statement during at the signing of the Transaction and Industry Agreements (TIA) for the successor companies of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) which effectively handed the companies over to the successful bidders in the privatization exercise.

He added that Nigerians should be willing to accept the increase in electricity tariffs as the privatization exercise in the power sector draws to an end, noting that the tariffs hike would only be in the short term as massive investments in the sector were bound to cause the tariffs to fall in the long-term.

He made a comparison with the crash in the price of SIM cards in the telecoms sector, as a result of competition and investments in the industry, adding that the same development would unfold in the power sector.

The acting BPE DG described the signing ceremony as the beginning of a voyage, stressing that there was still the need for route charting, navigation and steering in the right direction.

Also speaking at the signing ceremony, the Managing Director of CMEC, the successful bidders for Sapele Power Plant, one of the unbundled PHCN companies, Mrs Heather Onoh, said it would take the company at least six months to rehabilitate parts of the Sapele Power Plant as the parts were badly managed and 12 months to completely rehabilitate the power plant.

CMEC had purchased the Sapele Power Plant for $201million.

Also speaking at the signing ceremony, the Chief Executive Officer, Transcorp/Woodrock, the consortium that won the bid for Ugheli Power Plc, Mr. Tony Elumelu, said with the signing of transaction and industry agreements for the Power Holding Company of Nigeria’s successor companies, the stage was set for the citizens to enjoy uninterrupted power supply.

He made this statement shortly after his company signed a Power Purchase Agreement with the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company Plc.

The NBET signed similar agreements with five other firms in respect to Geregu Power Plc, Sapele Power Plc, Kainji Hydro Electric Plc, Shiroro Hydro Electric Plc and Egbin Power Plc.

“Today is a very significant day for Nigeria, significant because this is the issue of public-private partnership in action. The government of President Goodluck Jonathan promised Nigerians that they will have power, let there be light and with what we are doing today, there is going to be light,” Elumelu said.

He said it was his firm’s conviction that once the country could get its power sector right, economic and social development would follow.

“We believe that power is so significant for the economic development of the country; not only economy, but also social development of the country. When we get power right, it will lead to the development of Nigeria’s economy and will touch the society in so many other areas,” he added.

Meanwhile, following the full privatisation of the PHCN, the Federal Government and the successful bidders for 10 generating companies (GENCOs) and five distribution companies (DISCOs), on Thursday, signed sale and purchase agreements on their handover.

Speaking at the occasion, Vice-President Namadi Sambo, who was represented by the Minister of Power, Professor Chinedu Nebo, described the event as “important landmark,” saying it marked important milestones in the ongoing reform of the Nigeria electricity supply industry.

The vice-president thanked the World Bank for “its support towards making these agreements bankable, through the provision of Partial Risk Guarantee credit support instrument.”

Ivynwa: I'm speechless at these pictures and still trying hard to believe that girls throw down mattresses in the forest (or do they even live there in the forest huh). Where is the proof that those mattresses were laid by Nigerian girls or they are just writing terrible things and ascribing it to Nigeria as if our country is the capital city of hell fire. Let them remove these disgusting and undignifying pictures from the net and stop connecting the name of our country to it.

How can they snap pictures of a condom dump site and write and ascribe it to Nigerian girls? What shows that that refuse was from Nigerians and not people of other countries? what is the name of the media house that wrote that stuff let me write and tell them not to be connecting Nigeria to their damn rubbish.
Haba, you bi lawyer? Who cares? I like what they are doing.

Billyonaire: Soyinka knows the right thing to do but he chose to do it wrongly. That protest is welcomed in any Democracy, but it should be to the Parliament and not to a governor. There is nothing a Governor can do about an issue that borders on Office of First Lady and budgeted by the FCT Ministry. Granted the office of the First Lady is unconstitutional, the Parliament should address the misnorm and scrap the expense. 4 billion is too much money to be spent on a building. How much is the cost of a bag of cement and paint? GEJ needs to remember, he, just like me had no shoes, and he should not forget that just like both of us, there are many kids out there that has no shoes and have no goodluck to be President. I stick to truth and the truth sets me free always.
Are you so daft? What they are doing is the right thing.Firstly, they need to laid their complaints to Fashola as the governor lagos state who will now send their protest letter to your master Gej in Aso rock.

“The opportunity still exists because I am aware that the budget is yet to receive the assent of the President. And this provides an opportunity to look at it again. There is also an opportunity for us as we embark on constitution amendment about what role women who are spouses of the heads of government should really play. I think that this type of protest only enriches the debate and helps us as a people to decide what we want going forward in this nation.”

Politics › Soyinka Leads Protest To Fashola Over N4bn First Lady House by scopusng(op): 8:24am On Feb 15, 2013
LAGOS — Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka and civil society groups, Thursday, condemned the N4 billion earmarked for the construction of a Mission House for the First Lady, Patience Jonathan, in the 2013 budget of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, saying it is “a mind-boggling fiscal misappropriation.”

It would be recalled that the fund for the mission house, which was expected to serve as centre to host other African First Ladies, was listed in the 2013 budget of FCT, Abuja.

Soyinka and civil society expressed their displeasure in a lettter read during a protest march organised by Women Arise for Change Initiative, which also had in attendance, Mr. Festus Keyamo; wife of late Beko Ransome-Kuti, Abosede; daughter of the late Afro beat king, Yeni Anikulapo and others.

The protesters, who were over 100 converged on the premises of the Lagos State Television, LTV, Agidingbi, Ikeja, and later marched to Lagos House, Alausa.

Traffic was partially paralysed around Alausa axis for about an hour due to the activities of the protesters.

The protesters displayed various placards which read: “N4 billion will create jobs, so we say no to mission house; N4 billion budget for Mission House, we say no to fiscal rascality.”

The Nobel laureate whose statement to other African First Ladies was read by the President of the Initiative, Mrs. Joe-Okei Odumakin in the presence of Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, said: “There is no such thing as an African First Ladies Mission in the Nigerian appropriation list.”

He, however, urged other African First Ladies to distance themselves from the idea, saying: “Your names have been invoked as the ultimate beneficiaries and thus, you are vicariously implicated. In the name of St. Valentine and the love I bear for you all, please dissociate yourselves from this display of shameless avarice. I shall not go so far as to ask you to denounce what you probably know nothing about, but if you ever get to hear of it, distance yourselves from the gross impropriety.”

It’s unconstitutional—Keyamo

Keyamo, on his part, said: “The allocation of such fund to an office that wasn’t recognised by the 1999 constitution is unconstitutional, null and void. And this is significant that it is women that are protesting against this act.
“It is sad that Abuja has since become the capital of corruption. The stories that come out of the FCT daily aren’t palatable at all.”

Okei-Odumakin wants First Lady’s office scrapped

Okei-Odumakin, in her speech, demanded that “President Goodluck Jonathan must direct the FCT Minister to withdraw this budget allocation and sack him for this assault on public morality.

“The unconstitutional office of the First Lady should be scrapped and spouses of elected officials to play no more than ceremonial roles in the country.”

The President noted “N4 billion could help millions of school age children to receive better education, equip rural clinics with drugs and do society a host of other good.”

Mrs. Abosede Ransome-Kuti on her part said “of what interest is the N4 billion allocated for the construction of a Mission House for African First Ladies to the man on the street. Of what interest is this to the vast majority of the citizens of the country who cannot eat three square meals daily?”

In his response, Fashola said: “This is what I think is the discharge of your own responsibilities of participation in the country’s democratic journey. For nothing, I will deliver this letter today.

“Our democratic experience is comparatively very young. And this is about the 14th year. And going forward, I believe that it is your participation that enriches the process that helps to set the appropriate priorities.

“Nothing can be much more incisive as the demonstration of the occupational endeavours of survival that we see our women engage in as it was shown by Mrs. Beko Ransome Kuti, women selling matches to survive in the country, definitely that is a wake-up call for us all.
