BusinessRe: Small Computer Accessories Business by scribe(m): 4:53pm On Sep 06, 2006
My brother, you need to be careful with this business. As lucrative as the business is. There are some pitfalls. The unstable exchange rate and the speed at which the prices of computer components fall makes it a business that requires careful studies and right connection to good suppliers.

Else, you might end up buying components that you cannot even sell at the original cost price. Getting educated by a genuine businessman who is already doing well in this business might be a better way to start than asking question in this forum. Of course you might meet someone online too. I wish you well.

@Raymand
I have the Go Bible on my phone. It is just the same Old King James Version in a digital form. And of course it was offered free. No string attached. I can assure you that it is not a subtle devise from the anti-christ camp. grin
ComputersRe: Linux or Windows Operating System? by scribe(m): 9:19am On Sep 06, 2006
@Niggy
I tried that, but I get stuck when it starts loading x-window-system. Brings out an error message about my mouse. The whole things looks so complex and confusing. Is it possible to get Fedora CD from you? My ISP is having a problem. So I browse with a dial up for now. No way to download 3.xgb of Fedora with my current connection. Thanks
ComputersRe: Urgent Help Needed With Hidden Files by scribe(m): 8:54am On Sep 06, 2006
Information given is insufficient.

What Operating system are you using?

However, assuming it is Win98, you can try this. If you have another PC or you have a friend that has one. Simply remove the hard disk of your computer, add it as a SLAVE to the other computer, then you can search for your hidden files.

@Ishmael
I can understand your pain. The manufacturers has caused so much pain to a lot of people. I wish we could all join hands and sue them. Their technology is faulty. I've used several other hard disk. None of them has ever dropped dead without warning. I'm still looking forward for a way to get my precious data out of the hard disk. Whether it is dead or not. I want my data back.

@gentleone
Thanks. I will check those guys out.
ComputersRe: Help! My 40gb Hard Disk Is Inaccessible by scribe(op): 3:58pm On Sep 04, 2006
@Ynot
Thanks for your suggestion. I already tried it (I did not steal grin, I had another one in the office) but it didn't work. I used another Maxtor 40GB that is still functional. The circuit of the defective hard disk even worked well on the swapped harddisk. So I believe it is not the circuit.

@Hayprof
The manufacturers are lousy. Actually, Seagate has bought them over.

Thanks to all for your suggestions. I am grateful. I am still hopeful that one of these days, I will be able to retrieve my data from the maxtor hard disk.
Meanwhile, I encourage every nairaland member that has a maxtor disk drive to URGENTLY make backup of their important data. The reports I read on the internet about the failure of this particular brand is frightening.

I got a Debian Sarge CD. After installing as directed by the accompanying manual. I only landed in a DOS like environment. Any idea on how I can move from there to the graphic style desktop? I was expecting to have some kind of desktop like you posted above. Am not an IT guru. So I can't imagine myself working with command line codes. huh

I was operating Windows XP. The problem now is that even MS Dos cannot see the hard disk. So no File Recovery Software is of any use. I've tried them before posting this problem. cry cry cry
Thanks for your reply. I still look forward to a solution.

Could you please start a new thread for Linux Newbies, and use the thread to take would be Linux lovers through the rudiments. This present thread is overcrowded with technical issues that make a newbie like myself get freightened  huh at changing from Window$ to Linux.
At least, in some of the post, you GURUS claimed that Linux is for non-IT guys too.
Please, do something for us.  grin
ComputersRe: Isass.exe Is Killing Me by scribe(m): 8:29am On Aug 23, 2006
The problem you are having is a WORM infection of your system. You must have picked it up from the internet.
I've had a similar problem before on my desktop which runs Window XP.
Solution: You will need to download updates for the Window 2000 you are running. Recent Security Patches will stop the WORM infection.
There was another solution which I picked up from the internet when I hard the problem. But unfortunately, it is lying in my 40GB Maxtor hard disk which has refused to be recognised.
However, if I come across the solution while on internet. I will not fail to post it here for you.
But the fastest solution is for you to GOOGLE. You will see several solutions being proffered. Because the problem has been around for more than a year now.
Cheers
ComputersMy 40Gb Hard Disk Is Inaccessible by scribe(op): 8:15am On Aug 23, 2006
Help!!! My hard disk has failed. cry cry cry The hard disk is a 40GB slim MAXTOR. I created four partition on it and was using two of the partition as backup for my files.
How the trouble started:
It happened that the generator in the office went off and restarted while my PC was on. By the time I returned to my desk to put on the PC it could no longer boot. It was showing the following error:

Primary Master HDD Error
Run SETUP Press
F1 to Resume

I thought it was a minor problem. So I removed the hard disk and attached it to another pc as slave. But alas, it still came back with the same error message only this time

Primary Slave HDD Error
Run SETUP Press
F1 to Resume

Whenever, I run setup, I discover that the BIOS configuration is showing that the hard disk is not available. But when I scanned for hard disk under BIOS SETUP, the full specification of the hard disk get displayed. Unfortunately, after saving the specification and returning to the booting area, the same error message gets displayed. When I return to BIOS SETUP, the hard disk will not be showing.

If I press F1, the computer start seeking for the OPERATING SYSTEM from other sources other than the HARD DISK.

When slaved to another computer. The same error still get showing. However, after pressing F1, the computer will boot normally, but the hard disk will neither show up under DISK MANAGEMENT, nor under Hardware Profile. That is, it is treated as none existing. I have tried using different OS, WIN98, WIN2000 and WIN XP. It is the same result.
It was then I realise that "wahala don sele" (there is trouble). For more than 3 days I was combing the internet to get solution because I have files on the hard disk that spans several years work. In my wildest dream I never imagine that a hard disk will just pack up like that. So foolishly, I have been backing up my files in the fourth partition of the hard disk.

Please, if anyone knows how I can get my files off this hard disk. Kindly post the solution. Thanks in advance.

RUN is the place to be. I Look forward to sending my children there grin grin grin

@okokomoki
Lovely reply. This is indeed a mature way to handle Criticism. I am proud of RUN. In few years to come, the difference between graduate's of this well structured and managed universities and that of the abandoned public universities (state and federal alike) will become a good topic for discussion on this forum.

Before someone take offense, let me quickly confess that I am a product of a federal university. Am proud of my alma mater. But it is a pity that the Federal Government who is supposed to be the owner and manager has long abandoned their obligation to this ivory towers and gone chasing shadows.

I am optimistic however, that the competition being created by the private Universities will send good signal to the State and Federal Government to sit-up and manage their universities well.

"Na wa o". The looters seems to be hell-bend on drying up our resources if possible. While many Nigerians can hardly boast of 2 meals. Someone is carrying $1.5million out of the country as if the amount is chicken-change. May God help us. May the Lord strengthen the likes of Mallam Nuhu Ribadu. I really wish we have more sincere gentlemen like him in our country.

Your request is a hard one to grant in forum like this. I guess Nairalanders don't want to grant your request because they will be doing our beloved administrator Seun a disfavour by turning this beautiful forum to HARKER'S LAIR. I will suggets you Google for your request or spend some few coins to get a legal Cyber Cafe Billing Software. Cheers cool cool cool

Western "Bojuboju".
I quite agree with you. The west is not being sincere with their so called WOLRD PEACE MISSION. They are always on the look out for economic gains.

Nairaland GeneralRe: User Suggestions for the Nairaland Forum by scribe(m): 12:35pm On Aug 14, 2006
Well Seun, I think this forum is one of the best I have ever visited on the web. The only improvement I can suggest is that the issue of MORAL in the true African context should be re-emphasized. Some postings by few members cannot be said to be materials that a mother or father will consider safe for a child. Believe me or not, teenagers too do visit this forum. So, let us be mindful of what stuff we feed the leaders of tomorrow with. Thanks

This surely has been an interesting topic. I'm only sad cry cry cry that the prediction that "government magic" will get the case swept under the carpet was fullfilled in less than 48hours after the story started cry cry cry. Special thanks to all those that gave vital information on this thread.
Let's put our trust in God. One day, we will be rescued from these self-imposed task masters, who have been stealing the wealth of our nation. Amen.
PoliticsRe: President Of Nigeria In 2007: Who? <Poll> by scribe(m): 11:31am On Aug 12, 2006
I will vote for Obasanjo. Not because I like him, but since he has started using EFCC to catch those who stole our money and recked our economy, I will love that to continue for another 4 years or so. I guess by then, we will have more sanity in the society. If there is no hiding place for stolen money, the menace will greatly reduce. cheesy

sad I feel sad when I recollect how my phone was "collected" by two young guys riding a motorcycle. They simply asked "Bros wetin dey" and before I realised what was happening, one gave me a dirty slap. Before I realised what was happening, they have cleaned out my pockets. I had to beg for my ID card which they threw on the floor and sped off. Bad experience sad
Thank God I've gotten a better phone now. A birthday gift grin from someone who care grin grin grin

smileyIt was nice reading each individual's testimony about games. I used to be an addict to anything game. So many of the games mentioned were quite familiar and I've tried not a few of them. To all the game lovers I say cheers. However, watchout, too much of gaming can affect your commitment offline (outside the land of fantasy)  grin
