In August of 1865, a Colonel P.H. Anderson of Big Spring, Tennessee, wrote to his former slave, Jourdan Anderson, and requested that he come back to work on his farm. Jourdan — who, since being emancipated, had moved to Ohio, found paid work, and was now supporting his family — responded spectacularly by way of the letter seen below (a letter which, according to newspapers at the time, he dictated).

Rather than quote the numerous highlights in this letter, I'll simply leave you to enjoy it. Do make sure you read to the end.

Sir: I got your letter, and was glad to find that you had not forgotten Jourdon, and that you wanted me to come back and live with you again, promising to do better for me than anybody else can. I have often felt uneasy about you. I thought the Yankees would have hung you long before this, for harboring Rebs they found at your house. I suppose they never heard about your going to Colonel Martin's to kill the Union soldier that was left by his company in their stable. Although you shot at me twice before I left you, I did not want to hear of your being hurt, and am glad you are still living. It would do me good to go back to the dear old home again, and see Miss Mary and Miss Martha and Allen, Esther, Green, and Lee. Give my love to them all, and tell them I hope we will meet in the better world, if not in this. I would have gone back to see you all when I was working in the Nashville Hospital, but one of the neighbors told me that Henry intended to shoot me if he ever got a chance.

I want to know particularly what the good chance is you propose to give me. I am doing tolerably well here. I get twenty-five dollars a month, with victuals and clothing; have a comfortable home for Mandy,—the folks call her Mrs. Anderson,—and the children—Milly, Jane, and Grundy—go to school and are learning well. The teacher says Grundy has a head for a preacher. They go to Sunday school, and Mandy and me attend church regularly. We are kindly treated. Sometimes we overhear others saying, "Them colored people were slaves" down in Tennessee. The children feel hurt when they hear such remarks; but I tell them it was no disgrace in Tennessee to belong to Colonel Anderson. As to my freedom, which you say I can have, there is nothing to be gained on that score, as I got my free papers in 1864 from the Provost-Marshal-General of the Department of Nashville. Mandy says she would be afraid to go back without some proof that you were disposed to treat us justly and kindly; and we have concluded to test your sincerity by asking you to send us our wages for the time we served you. This will make us forget and forgive old scores, and rely on your justice and friendship in the future. I served you faithfully for thirty-two years, and Mandy twenty years. At twenty-five dollars a month for me, and two dollars a week for Mandy, our earnings would amount to eleven thousand six hundred and eighty dollars. Add to this the interest for the time our wages have been kept back, and deduct what you paid for our clothing, and three doctor's visits to me, and pulling a tooth for Mandy, and the balance will show what we are in justice entitled to. Please send the money by Adams's Express, in care of V. Winters, Esq., Dayton, Ohio. If you fail to pay us for faithful labors in the past, we can have little faith in your promises in the future. Please direct your questions at Soludo, afterall it was during his tenure or do you want the CBN to cancel the contract and then incur penalties? I believe Soludo would not have signed it if it was not allowed, the guy had too many knives out for him to make a mess of his official residence.

It was not during Soludo's tenure that the N1b property opposite the one Soludo started was bought, it was during Sanusi's tenure and that's why this report came out in the first place. I dont have any grouse against Sanusi but against the CBN for going against the FG Monetization Policy!

In as much as I dont support the false report by the Street Journal, at least CBN has come out to confirm that they indeed bought the properties in question.
The question I want to ask here is if CBN is above other Govt Ministries and Parastatals that have had to abide by the Monetization policy. They're saying the law setting up the CBN stipulates that the CBN Governor must have his own quarters. Why didnt they bring out this clause when the Monetization Policy was implemented? Or why was the amendment not done before the old quarters was sold?
They kept mum and allowed the old quarters be sold under the Monetization Policy - I guess one of their directors would have probably bought it, then went ahead to now go purchase another property worth probably 10 times more just to fleece the nation of scarce resources saying one useless clause in the Act as amended.
What really baffles me is even if the CBN governor must be housed, must he live in a N5b mansion? If they could buy a property for N1B just to use as garden and parking lots for the CBN Governor's Official Quarters, I'm sure the total cost of the project would not be less than N5b then.
What baffles me is who actually gave the approval for the purchase? Is there no limit to the amount of a contract a CBN governor is allowed to approve? If there is, how much is it?

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has noted a report being circulated to members of the public alleging that the CBN Governor, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, has bought a N1 billion property in Abuja to add to the aesthetic value of his new house. Ordinarily, the Bank would not have bothered to respond to a matter personal to Mallam Sanusi Lamido but for the fact that the property in question belongs to the CBN.
The property located at NO.8 (Plot 2704), Colorado Street, Maitama is the official residence of the CBN Governor being constructed by the Bank. The contract for the building was awarded during the tenure of Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo and it became necessary because the former official residence was sold during the implementation of the monetization policy approved by the Federal Government in March 2005.
The decision to build the official residence was hinged on the provisions of Section 34, Sub-section (e) of the CBN Ac t 2007 as amended which allows for the provision of official residence for the CBN Governor.

The adjoining plot with two duplexes at No. 1, Missouri Street, Off Colorado Street, was bought by the Bank to provide parking space as the original plot was congested. The owner of the adjoining plot has since been paid and the space is required to complete the development of the new building.

For the avoidance of doubts, the two properties belong to the Central Bank of Nigeria as the new official residence of the Governor. Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has no personal house in Abuja and his current official residence is a rented property paid for by the Bank.

It is therefore very clear that the perpetrators of this unwholesome act are only out to malign the integrity of Mallam Sanusi. Their action in circulating the address of the residence of the Governor through the media, constitutes serious security threats to him and his family. In view of this, we are making a formal report to the security agencies for necessary action.

While the dust generated by the contentious sale of Intercontinental Bank Plc has barely settled, the Governor of Nigeria’s Central Bank, Lamido Sanusi is again at the centre of another controversy. Street Journal’s investigations revealed that Malam Sanusi bought over a property beside his new house in Maitama, Abuja. The new acquisition located at No 1, Missouri Street, off Colorado, Maitama allegedly set Nigeria’s number one banker back by one billion Naira and it was paid for in October.

Street Journal gathered that the purpose for which he bought the property was mainly to add to the aesthetic value of his new house and that he plans to use the newly acquired property for a unique terraced garden.

Work has already started on the site as the structure on the property is already being pulled down despite the fact that some of the present occupants are yet to move out. Street Journal found out that the occupants are young workers some of who disclosed that their rents are yet to expire. It was also found out that though the house has been sold, the landlord has refused to pay the tenants any compensation to enable them move elsewhere.

The new owner, Sanusi Lamido too has refused to give them more time to get suitable accommodation. The occupants disclosed that some of them have relocated but they are still putting up there because they do not have the funds with which to secure new places to stay. They have however been informed that their belongings would be thrown out by the 1st day of December so that garden construction work can begin in earnest.

I still live in Naija my guy and my family are all in Naija, I jst happened not to be around right now. I understand what you're saying but I still maintain that we cannot continue to sit and just fold our arms. It's not so much for us but for our children and generations unborn. You have said the real truths here and given a very close if not accurate analysis of the complexity of the naija Corruption syndrome, but we cannot sit and fold our arms anymore. I have kids and they deserve the rights to survival in this country. If we leave things to go on as they are right now, I can tell you in the next 10 - 20 years, Nigeria's situation will be worse than that of Ethiopia and Somalia combined. And you know what, those that brought us there would have fled with their families to Europe and the Americas. So give or take, they still win.

I thought no one would ever complain about this daylight robbery being perpetuated by the PHCN. I suffered it for over three years in my former apartment before I decided to relocate. In a year, I paid almost N60K as NEPA recharges overthis their nonsense Service Charge they call it. The worst thing was that my landlord then went and got the Three Phase one which attracted about N1500 monthly charge as Service charge alone. Told him I'll pay for the single phase one just to reduce my NEPA bills but he refused. So when I wanted to leave, I made sure I bought credit that will last me for six months, when I left he almost had to call me to come and pay for the service charges for six months - what a joker!!!

On a more serious note - I think the solution is for us to invest in Solar Panels, since the Govt has refused to come to the aid of the common man. National Assembly members will shout and holla but nothing happens at the end of the day. Some of them benefit from these callous exploitations of the common man. By the time we neglect their power and provide power for ourselves - no one will tell them before they drop their stupid and senseless charges. There is no where in the world where people pay Service Charge on a freaking metre. Why then do they make people pay for the meters in the first place? Paying almost N40K to get the meter is equivalent to having purchased it so where does the stupid and senseless service charge come in here? What are they servicing?

It is this same country where you have to renew ur Driver's License every Three years as if it takes three years for one to forget how to drive whereas in other countries, you only apply for Driver's License once and that's it. These people design these systems just to exploit us the masses and it's high time we stand up to all these injustices going on in this country through a revolution.

Civil Unrest is looming around the corner in this country, may be it'll burst loose in january when they increase the prices of fuel/kerosene/diesel all in the name of removing Oil Subsidy, hmmnnn!!!

They can easily merge the driver's details and address by instructing all car owners to come and update their details and a time frame should be implemented, say 3 months. . . once you have re-registered your car, you'll be given a slip to show your car had been updated. After 3 months police or LASTMA have a right to tow any car which was not re-registered. Worst case scenario they can charge each car owner 100naira (we can call this admin fee)

If they really want to follow International standards as submitted by our retarded helmsman, does it mean we then no longer need to renew our Driver's Licenses every three years as is currently the practice? They fleece us every third year to come and renew driver's licenses whereas in the developed world, once you're issued with a driver's license it's urs for life, you only go for another driving test when you attain a certain age.

The issue is this scheme has no single advantage for the masses of this country, only an avenue to fleece us of more of our scare resources. Energy bills going up daily, food and fuel costs unimaginably high, school fees increasing termly now and all that, yet they come up with this crap of an idea? I think a REVOLUTION is inevitable in this country right now.

FRSC INTRODUCES NEW NUMBER PLATES, DRIVING LICENCE
The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has announced a deadline of August 2012 for Nigerian drivers to obtain the new driving license and number plates recently commissioned by President Goodluck Jonathan at the FRSC headquarters in Abuja.
The upgraded license and plate numbers are now interlinked and will, henceforth, be connected to each individual, in order to help the FRSC track all road offences and monitor the driving behaviour of all vehicle owners.
Speaking during the commissioning, President Goodluck Jonathan said the launch of the new driving license and number plates was a culmination of three years of hard work which started with the discussion he had with the Corps Marshal, Mr. Osita Chidoka in his office then as Vice President on the need to improve the driving licence to meet international standards.
The new initiative, he revealed, was meant to alter the culture of recklessness displayed by drivers, their impunity and lack of consideration for other road users.
Regarding the new license and plates, FRSC Marshall, Osita Chidoka, said they are part of a credible database which will make it easy to retrieve all information connected to every car owner through the license and the plate number.
Chidoka also said the overriding objectives of the new driver’s licence and number plates were to restore the integrity of the country’s driving licence.
Chidoka said, “One of the critical ingredients of this initiative is that we are going to have a credible data base of drivers and vehicles in Nigeria”.
He advised drivers and car owners to change to the new license and name plates which cost 6000 and N15000 each immediately, to avoid sanctions that will be accompanied with a breach, and ensure they are safely within the new regime before the 12 months deadline.

1. What are the advantages of this new plate numbers?
2. Are there truly any security features attached to these new plates
3. Do we all need to change our old number plates for these new ones? If so how much would it cost?

My nephew doesnt like spending money at all, he's very prudent but in a situation where they hold him and his immediate family hostage, what is N20K in redeeming that kind of situation? that you're not sure where it may end. There was a day I was there and he came around, few mins later there were like 10 boys at their gate saying they're looking for him, we told them to go tell them that he wasnt around that he just came to drop something and he has left. They said ok no worries, they'll wait at the gate that since he has left they'll see wether it's his driver alone that will drive out with his car.
