One month after Nigeria’s Central Bank lifted a ban on crypto, startups are now pushing for SEC licence

Two crypto startups have applied for licences from Nigeria’s Security Exchange Commission (SEC) after the central bank lifted its 2-year ban on crypto-related bank accounts, a highly-placed source at the exchange told TechCabal, signaling a push by crypto startups to take advantage of a recent u-turn by regulators.

Quidax and Luno, two popular crypto exchanges, reportedly began speaking to the SEC in October 2023, a source familiar with the talks told TechCabal.

Luno told TechCabal that it does not comment on discussions or potential discussions with regulatory authorities.

Quidax declined to comment for this story.

Another crypto company reportedly in talks with regulators is yellow Card. “We have not made any public moves yet, but it is in the process,” said one person with knowledge of the company’s business.

Last week, yellow Card announced

a partnership with American crypto exchange platform Coinbase that will allow Nigerians and people in 19 other African countries to use Coinbase’s wallet, purchase stablecoin (USDC), make remittances, save, and do everyday commerce on the platform.

YESTERDAY, in a supremely well argued judgment, Nigeria’s apex court validated the election of Prince Dapo Abiodun as the governor of Nigeria’s Gateway State. Leading a five-member panel, Justice Tijjani Abubakar threw the appeal filed by Ladi Adebutu, the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the March 18, 2023 in the state, into its natural habitat: the trash can. Immediately the news filtered through, joyous celebrations erupted across the state. The people had endured a lot of tribulation from shameless characters who turned electoral contest into robbery, then sought judicial validation through comedy, infecting the airwaves with salacious stories meant to undercut the people’s governor but only putting their pernicious personalities into bold relief. The people endured the audacity, knowing that they had elected a performing government and confident that the courts would affirm their freely expressed choice. Hurray!!!

The ongoing celebrations across Ogun State have been richly deserved, but the road to victory was paved with thorns. In the last four and half years, Prince Abiodun has had to endure a path strewn with pebbles, murky waters and broken bottles. In 2019 when he first emerged governor, he had done so against all odds. His predecessor had fought him to a standstill, and he couldn’t campaign freely across the state. His campaign posters were torn and if you appeared in the yellow vest associated with his supporters, you were immediately pounced upon by thugs. He won the election, but the vehicle used during his inauguration on May 29, 2019 was borrowed from a neighbouring state: such was the Establishment’s onslaught on the Iperu-born prince and business mogul. And the battle from the tribunal to the appellate court and the apex court was nothing short of titanic.

Like in 2019, so in 2023 when, in a fitting testimony to his life-changing projects, the people rewarded him with another term of office. The year presented memories that will linger. As he crisscrossed local governments in the state campaigning vigorously for re-election, adversaries within and without mounted fierce opposition. His predecessor, Ibikunle Amosun, who had failed to install a crony in 2019 and who had mounted vigorous campaigns of calumny across the state for the four years of his (Abiodun’s) administration, anointed yet another failure in the build-up to the 2023 polls even while remaining in the All Progressives Congress (APC). As Amosun conducted his onslaughts, taking advantage of a climate of peace impossible in his own day, the main opposition party, PDP, perfected its own act, banking on vote buying. In order to manipulate the electoral process, the PDP candidate, according to the charges filed against him and his co-travellers by the Federal Government, allegedly printed over 200,000 ATM-like cards and suborned POS agents to carry out electoral fraud. And, what is more, dissidents within APC, including ex-leaders who collected millions to work against their own party, mounted roadblocks on his way. However, the people were determined to stand by their governor.

And then came the court cases and the hate campaigns. The opposition, united by lust for power, called him every evil name under the sun. They robed him in the garb of a villain, spurned his people-oriented schemes as a gimmick, and sponsored write-ups by hack and hired writers to distract him, intent on aborting the climate of peace in the state. Indeed, they did not even spare members of his cabinet, some of whom they wrote salacious stories about as a way of derailing his government. The governor could not believe the audacity. He said: “I don’t know what moral standing a Ladi Adebutu would have to call my mandate freely given to me by the good people of Ogun State, a stolen mandate. Someone who did everything to buy the election, someone who went ahead and printed cards and was distributing them; someone who is facing criminal case, someone who has been arraigned!”

The PDP and its allies indeed turned political opposition, a credible democratic institution meant to keep government on its toes, into pure mischief, deploying excoriation and demonization as articles of faith. They deployed character assassination, false allegations, innuendo, outright lies, accusing the governor and his team of the very things they had done in a satanically shameless manner. This makes Friday’s verdict such a sweet victory. The governor defeated Adebutu three-nil across the courts, replicating the 2019 pattern. Dissatisfied with the governor’s victory, Adebutu had approached the Elections Petitions Tribunal with his cancerous case, and the tribunal in a well-reasoned judgment had thrown it out for lack of merit, a decision later approved by the Court of Appeal in a majority judgment in Lagos. Friday’s Supreme Court verdict, then, is a glorious icing on the cake, a testament to Abiodun’s pact with the people. The battle was fierce but the governor was never distracted. Rather, he was firmly focused on delivering good governance.

It is no wonder, then, that Ogun State is first in many things: ease of doing business, growth in revenue, industrial base, etc. The Economic Confidential, a subsidiary of PR Nigeria, recently showed that Ogun State is Nigeria’s most economically viable state and topmost investment destination outside Lagos, Nigeria’s economic capital. Nigerians are aware that Ogun has consistently ranked among the three topmost revenue-generating states in the country since Abiodun came into office in 2019. They are aware of the huge, unprecedented infrastructure outlay that has made Ogun Nigeria’s top investment destination, and the key deliverables in the state’s Budget 2024 that will consolidate on the achievements.

The Gateway State now has one of the best airports in the country, not only for cargo but also for passenger traffic. It has an aerotropolis (airport city) with a globally certified raw materials processing centre meant to enable farmers and importers get standardization for items scheduled for export. Long before the Federal Government removed subsidy on PMS, Abiodun rolled out a gas-powered public transport system, with the state’s wifi-enabled buses converted from PMS to gas-powered vehicles, believing that with gas costing significantly less than PMS and offering better value, public buses would cost much less and offer the people relief as they commute from one point to the other. That was apart from the launching of electric motorbikes and tricycles all over the state. That was quite visionary. Abiodun’s economic strategy was further validated as Ogun State was ranked as Nigeria’s leading Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) state on Index A1 in the State of the States 2023 report by BudgIT. Ogun, which beat other states to emerge as Nigeria’s most improved state on Index A1 with an index point of 0.53, was closely followed by Kaduna (0.47), Bauchi (0.41) and Rivers (0.36) in the ranking. The Light Up Ogun State project is on course as Ogun becomes one of the first states to take advantage of the constitutional reform in electricity generation and distribution. This is besides the resuscitation of water supply in Abeokuta, the state capital, and around the state.

As the governor himself said: “When we assumed office on the 29 of May, 2019, we were committed to a vision to ensure that we create an enabling environment for investments and investors to strive in Ogun State, believing that that is very fundamental to the economic development of our state and the individual prosperity of our people.” That is why the people re-elected him, a verdict which has now been affirmed by the Supreme Court, drowning the distractions of the opposition. The eyo masquerades are seen typically during an eyo festival, a week long activities to escort a departed Lagos king into the great beyond and usher new ones.

Adorned in loose, all-covering white gowns, veiled masks, brimmed hats (with colours red, yellow, black, purple, green suggesting the house or conclave they come from) and a staff (the opambata) with which they bless or rebuke with.

In recent times, the scope of the festival has been broadened to include celebration of highly notable and significant individuals and events.

The last celebration of such festival was in 2017 to mark Lagos 50th anniversary (Akinwunmi Ambode administration).

The eyo masquerades are known to dance amidst drumming and singing as they match through the streets in procession.

Release DCP Kyari to join In tackling protracted security challenges, CSO tells Tinubu

As Nigerians continue to be at the mercy of criminals, Terrorist and Kidnappers, a Civil Society Organisation (CSO), Center for Democracy and Human Rights(CEDEHUR) has called on President Bola Tinubu to release Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP Abba Kyari, to help tackle the protracted security challenges across the country.

The call was made in a statement signed by the President CEDEHUR, Comrade Michael Sunday Emaluji, Spokesman Adebayo Lion Ogorry, National Coordinator, Segun Rotimi; Deputy National Coordinator, Musa Shehu Abdullahi; and National Secretary, Nnamdi Uzor Obichie, respectively.

The leadership of CEDEHUR expressed deep pain over the recent attacks by kidnappers in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja where three young daughters from three different Families were killed by the kidnappers because Ransom Money was not brought in time. It’s very clear that the situation of insecurity in the country has negatively impacted the economy and social lives of Nigerians, and asserted that if the Tinubu-led administration fails to bring on people with Unparalleled and unprecedented records like Super Cop Kyari this present administration will be considered the worst in the annals of history as far as insecurity is concerned.

According to them, their call for release of DCP Kyari is based on the track record of the police officer’s exploits and achievements that still speak volume as a dogged, determined and professional police officer who silenced a lot of criminal elements and Terrorist that terrorized Nigerians, and this made him to receive ‘the highest congressional award’, which the House of Representatives of the National Assembly under the leadership of the Rt Hon Femi Gbajabiamila during the 9th Assembly gave to him.

However, the statement alleged that Kyari was unnecessarily vilified and victimized, and pointed that it was a setup and sheer conspiracy to dampen the morale of the Officer by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, over allegations they cannot boldly verify and prove but betrayal, Envy, Cover up against an Innocent Officer who Arrested drug traffickers, REFUSED to compromise with the Suspects and Voluntarily handed over the Suspects and drugs to NDLEA to follow up on how the drug traffickers indicted their NDLEA officers in Enugu Airport.

The statement reads in part: “We, Concerned Nigerians, write to bring to your attention the worsening security situation in the country. It’s no longer funny Mr President. The situation is terrible and if you don’t act fast, Innocent Nigerians will continue to be killed, kidnapped and Terrorised as the Payment of this 100million Naira Ransom after killing some Victims will further emboldened the Kidnappers to believe that Killing of Victims Pays.

“The latest attacks on a family in Bwari Area Council where the kidnappers have already killed three out of the Many Children from the 3 families they kidnapped is reprehensible.

And Right here in the Nation’s Capital, kidnappers are having a field day and daily kidnapping innocent Citizens without any Effective and Capable Counter Measures for the Security agencies except series of press releases from security Chiefs as usual without any effective and physical results on ground for everybody to see and also to serve as deterrent to other Criminals.

“Satellite towns in the FCT are no longer safe as people are relocating to the city centres for fear of being kidnapped. Equally shocking are renewed attacks on passengers along the Abuja/Kaduna expressway, 45 innocent Nigerians in 3 Commercial buses were kidnapped between Otukpo in Benue and Enugu State last week, the Birnin Gwari expressway to Zamfara has been overtaken by kidnappers as Plateau, Zamfara, Benue, Katsina, Borno, Yobe, Anambra, Imo and many other places where devastated by several attacks, killings and Kidnappings.

“Sir You are aware of one member of the Nigerian police who galvanised his colleagues and took the battle to them. He is DCP Abba Kyari.

“Abba Kyari ‘s exploits were such that he received the highest congressional award which was bequeathed to him by the House of Representatives headed by your current Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila during the 9th Assembly.

“We would not want to go into the details of his ordeal in the hands of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, which has to do with conspiracy, Set-up and envy.

“The court even though has failed to live up to its mandate by breaching its guidelines, we must add that your intervention in the manner the NDLEA has colluded with drug barons to take out the most cherished and priceless officer of the Nigerian Police Force is needed urgently.

“This intervention would uncover those behind the drug traffickers the Kyari-led IRT arrested in Enugu in 2022, Voluntarily handed over with the drugs to the NDLEA while the NDLEA turned around to indict Kyari and his team in a deliberate Set-up because the drug agency is working for some drug barons who have perfected their ways of bringing drugs into the country in Collusion with NDLEA officers especially in Enugu Airport as confessed by the international drug traffickers arrested by Police IRT and Voluntarily transferred to NDLEA.

“Sir, seek full reports on the Kyari ordeal and immediately free Kyari so he can solve these security challenges. He knows the terrain, the system, their strategies, and how to engage communities and their leaders which usually helped him to arrest even the most dangerous of these kidnappers and bandits. He is also the best in the use of Technology and skills in the use of advance technical Intelligence to fight criminals. The Advanced Technical Intelligence Equipment the then Brilliant IGP Solomon Arase acquired for the Nigeria Police is no longer being used optimally.

“Mr President Sir, You are the father of Lagos and now father to all Nigerians, Sir You, Governor Fashola and Governor Ambode have seen firsthand how this Gifted Super Cop brought Sanity to Lagos by defeating all deadly Armed robbers and kidnappers that were terrorising Lagos and Nigeria between 2010-2021.

“Mr President can confirm these facts from the Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima who was the former Governor of Borno State on how the Super Cop in 2018 arrested all Boko Haram Terrorist Commanders and Coordinators involved in suicide bombings and ended suicide bombings in Maiduguri and the entire North East region.

“Our reasons for you to free DCP Abba Kyari is because of his antecedent and records he created, It’s also on Record that he was also the only Officer among all the security agencies in the country that arrested the Boko Haram terrorist responsible for the famous 2014 Chibok School Girls kidnapping in Borno.

“He arrested the first billionaire kidnapper in Nigeria, Evans. Successfully Rescued Magajin Garin Daura from Terrorist/kidnappers who kidnapped him in Daura town Katsina State and took him to Kano State and also Arrested all the Terrorist kidnappers that Demanded $30million Dollars Ransom in 2019.

He arrested the kidnappers of the Ikorodu School children, Epe Children and Ogun Turkish school children, Kidnappers of Oniba of Iba in Lagos State and Many Other biggest Kidnapping and terrorist Commanders across the Country including Vampire, Halti, yellow, Wadume, Ability, Onye Army, Dragon, Biggie, Urban Guarilla, Zakari Yau, Umar Abdulmalik, Abu Aisha, Abu kaka, and thousands of other deadly terrorists, kidnappers, bandits that were terrorising, killing and kidnapping innocent Nigerians on daily basis. ”
