It is your own misunderstanding to think that a low cut off automatically means no singular student from those states made decent scores in the common entrance exam. It only means not enough students scored high to fulfill the state quota, so the bar is dropped low and then lower to capture more students who can take up the state quota.

In no way has this method of dropping the bar in zamfara prevented a boy from Anambra or a girl from Ogun to take up the slots that was already allocated to their respective states. No one has cheated Emeka or Folake.

Emeka is competing with Chinyere, Folake is competing with Segun, Umaru is competing with Aisha. Their respective states already have guaranteed quota in the unity school admissions.

That you will suggest putting a uniform cut off mark, already betrays your ignorance and refusal to learn about the purpose of unity schools.

You think these people even care so much about these things?

It is we Southerners that carry this unity school cut off on our heads, as if our states do not already have many state owned public schools and private schools that students already attend.

Those Northern states also have many public primary and secondary schools owned by the state, so whatever the academic problems that continue to haunt those states, has nothing to do with their continued cutoff mark into Unity Schools.

Their low cut off mark only help to inform that their level of education in that part of the country is abysmal. The cut off is a symptom not a cause.

No one talked about cheating Emeka or Chinyere, we are talking about improving the standard of education in the north, you admitted here that the standard is very low.

So your solution to to such problem is to keep admitting them with 2 as cut off mark?

Put a uniform cut off for everybody, that way it becomes a competition for all states, imagine the shame a state will have that in the whole state they did not have any student who gained admission....

That will make the governors work on improving educational standard in their states...

Are you trying to say that unity schools don't deserve brilliant students from the north or the north is incapable of producing brilliant students like the south east?

zamfara should keep retaining their admissions quota in the unity school system. No unity school can promote a student that did not pass.

Or is there a quota for promotion from one class to another in the unity school system? Only admissions have quota, not promotion/progression within the system.

The low score is a function of educational backwardness that the state governments do not care to address enough.

What about their state public schools? Have you considered how terribly low the entry requirements and even promotion would be?

Even with all of these, those educationally poor states do not fulfill all their guaranteed slots in the unity school system, which then fall back to other students from other states.

And your solution is to encourage them to keep scoring 2 to gain admission ?

I will never support quota system in anything else except the Unity School system.

If you understand that the objective of the unity school is to always have a diverse mixture together and all enjoying subsidised education, then you will appreciate why it is a quota based system.

Otherwise, quota does not allow for the best.

Unity school is not for the best, it is for unity in diversity.

So zamfara should keep scoring 2 to gain admission ?

The same quota system they apply to federal jobs and then sometimes make the ones who scored low in charge of those who scored high.

Then you wonder why the country is the way it is...

The quota system has proven not to be effective, because it only makes some states lazy to believe that whether they improve or not is not a problem, because their slot is always there...

What encouragement would be the basis for zamfara that only needs 2 to gain admission?

If the quota system is always there, if they know they will not gain admission if they don't score 139 like Anambra, do you think the state government will sit down docile each year?

You now see part of the reason why the north is lagging behind in education and so many other human development index indices...

The truth is they are relaxed that their slot is always there in almost every aspect of governance, from presidency down to primary schools....

I used to know about some federal government school for the gifted.

That type of school should have no quota system to recruit students of diverse ethnicities, but a single system of recruiting only the exceptionally gifted students, regardless of which part of the country they originate from.

But some people who claim they are not Nigerians will rather prefer all the slots be allocated to them to the detriment of educationally disadvantaged Nigerian states. Nigeria really dodged a big missile.

Listen to yourself, no one is asking for that, what we are saying is give an equitable competitive system, the quota system has failed and still failing, it is not helping the northerners at all and the country....

It is making them to lag academically and other developments which is affecting the country....

Straight answer is quota.

Every state has a quota, so whatever it takes to fill that quota versus the scores of the students from that state, is what you see as cut off mark.

No state has cheated another state. All have only fulfilled their respective quotas to benefit from the subsidised education that the federal government is providing to aid their unity objective of those Unity Schools.

It is not by force to attend a unity school which does not even constitute 5% of all the secondary schools in Nigeria.

Unity School system is a post civil war programme of the federal government to engender harmony and unity in Nigerian children.

I did not attend a unity secondary school and I made it in life.

That I did not enjoy the subsidised secondary education provided by Unity Schools, does not mean I did not enjoy the heavily subsidised public tertiary education that Nigeria provided that landed me a job in a multinational firm.

For that, I am grateful and free of student loans my foreign counterparts are paying.

The same quota system they apply to federal jobs and then sometimes make the ones who scored low in charge of those who scored high.

Then you wonder why the country is the way it is...

Okay, I'm trying to understand what you wrote, but can't seem to comprehend it

Is it until it's sharia that brought him to power before it can be implemented in his case? Those that sharia law is used to judge their case, is it sharia that brought them to that point?

I'll really love you to shed more light on what you wrote

Alright.

As stated earlier, shari'a is like an institution just like schools.

In school, you got to get enrolled, underwent it and take the exam. Without this, you can't take it

Likewise Islamic sharia!

You got to be a Muslim, undergoes through Muslims's does and don'ts and their way of life before shari'a law can be implemented on a person.

Yes, some Muslim leaders around the world try to act as if they're implementing shari'a law while as the reality they just decided to take the punishable part of the law to implement it. At times, they use it as a weapon for their political gains among the ignorant Muslims. That's why the moment shari'a is mentioned, the first impression that comes to us (both the non-Muslim and most of the Muslims) are:
✓ Short-sleeving , i.e.cutting people's hands, Stoning the fornicators,Execution; beheading, stroking;
✓Marrying four wives;
✓Women being subjugated/treated as second class citizens;
✓Restrictions this, restrictions that....
as and the likes.😞

You got to create an environment where Islam propagates and gets practiced. People needed to be raised/trained, educated, to know the ethics, their roles & responsibility before thinking of taking action of punishing them if they erred.

Shari'a is a connection of laws and ethics. This is where shari'a differs from the modern law, where sets of rules/restrictions and their punishments are just being laid down, without means on how to prevent yourself from being culpable.

Let's be realistic, not a single state/nation that practices shari'a 60%in this world. They are just doing what i previously described.

Again implementing shari'a whereas there's supremacy of the constitution, do you think they are independent laws? Only few of the punishable laws (the ethics part is being out) of the sharia that do not go against the constitution of the land they're been implemented. And we then term it shari'a laws in some states like zamfara and Sokoto etc.
Crime / Two Fake Police Inspectors Arrested By Police Rapid Response Squad by NaijaCover(m): 6:49pm On Apr 26
Men of the Edo state police command have paraded two fake police inspectors arrested in connection with illicit drugs valued at N20 million in the State.

The Commissioner of Police, Funsho Adegboye, who disclosed this to newsmen in Benin City, said they were among the five-man criminal gang specialized in dealing in illicit drugs.

He gave the names of the two fake police officers as Alex Akaeze, 39, and Kadiri Hassan, 45. He also listed other members of the gang including Ovie Samuel, 46; Stanley Itota, 45; and Felix Oputi, 46.

Adegboye explained that the suspects were arrested by operatives of the Command’s Intelligence and Rapid Response Squad at a guest house operated by Samuel at No 5, Colobus Street, off Upper Mission Extension Road, Benin City.

He added that the illicit drug called ‘ice’ weighed 1,080 kilograms with a street value of N20 million. He added that the investigation is ongoing and that the suspects would soon be charged in court.

When interrogated, one of the suspects, Akaeze, said he was enlisted into the Police Force in 2009. Akaeze, who insisted he is a Police Inspector added that he was transferred to zamfara State from AIG Zone 2, Lagos State.

According to him

“I am an Inspector of Police. I was enlisted in 2009, I started in Ketu, and from there to SARS. I was transferred to zamfara, but I did not go. I worked myself back to Zone 2, and from there I was transferred to Lagos State Command, from where we were later transferred to Alagbon in September last year, but we were yet to report for duty there.

These two officers [Command operatives] are our colleagues, we worked together in IRT, I have their phone numbers and I called them before I came down from Lagos and I told them that I had an urgent arrest to make and wanted them to follow us and they agreed.

Although I told them that I still serve at Alagbon, I didn’t tell them the truth that we have not reported for duty there. We were with them in their office yesterday and they led us to make the arrest. We were however surprised that they suddenly changed it for us and arrested us with the drug dealers” he said.

On his part, Kadiri Hassan, who also insisted he is a Police Inspector, added that he joined the Police Force in 2008. He also disclosed that he was yet to report to duty at Alagbon when he was transferred in February this year.

Ovie Samuel, who procured the hard drug, denied knowledge of the trade.

“The people called me and said that they needed ice and I called my brother in Delta State to bring it for them, only for them to reveal their real identities that they are policemen” he stated.

(I am going to have to ask you to forget politics, tinubu vs obi, atiku, for a few minutes).

Sure, we are going to have ;some improvement' once all that happens, but naira is not going to go below 900 per dollar unless we are earning more and more dollars.

Short term, that means we got to regulate mining, and improve agriculture...especially agric. Less than 20% of our agric is mechanized, and if we want gains from agric, we need large scale mechanized farming. Then we need to really regulate our mining (which means we may have to fight some brutal wars in zamfara for instance).

Long term, we need to be exporting industrial product. Not just refined product...industrial product...because countries with strong currencies do that. Not this oil we are relying on.

That's why naira becoming stronger is a mirage. It is the same story whoever takes over. The naira is hooked up to oil prices. Get it off oil, then we have some optimism.

Better forget about politics, make I remind you.

If many did not want him to win, how did he win?

Simple, INEC shutdown IREV and wrote results for him.

Let INEC produce the polling unit by polling unit results as required by law
emkz:

For those wondering why I share the comments above, many did not want Tinubu to win.

That is why he won. His party was against him, many were against him as they blamed him for Buhari's failures. He himself did not expect to win the primaries or the elections. He was afraid on the day of the primaries. We could see it. During the primaries, his hands were visibly shaking as he struggled to read.

He was mocked.

Then something began. Akpabio gave a glowing speech praising himself and stepped down for Tinubu. The one that shocked me the most was Tinubu's arch-enemy, Ibikunle Amosun, who step down for Tinubu. Those who didn't stepped down were down-stepped in the primary elections.

The man himself said he didn't expect to win.

On the day of the election, Tinubu was exhausted and clearly afraid. The confidence was gone (see pictires below). He didn't cut the confidence of a person who believed he could win the elections, unlike the others who went into elections with foolish confidence.

He was mocked yet again.

I heard one newspaper even preprinted a headline to mock him hoping he'd lose with the words: "Tinubu finally lulehs". It was the newspaper and TV station that showed the greatest bias towards Tinubu and mocked him the most.

Then results of Lagos came out. Tinubu was mocked. Osun came out, he was mocked. FCT came out, he was mocked. Southeast states came out, he was further mocked for not even scoring up to 5000 votes in one state and getting zero %. In the estimation of the exigent masturbatory lovers of Nigeria, the elections in those states were free and fair.

Then results from core Yoruba states showed up starting with Ekiti. The devil in Dino Melaye wanted to take over, but he was stopped. Ondo showed, Ogun, and Oyo. People's songs changed.

Yobe results followed, a core APC state and Atiku took it. Then Gombe went to Atiku. Katsina came out and Atiku defeated Tinubu. People started bracing up for an Atiku presidency.

From out of nowhere, Niger state results came out, and told Tinubu: "we gat you". Many did not know Tinubu had long ties to Borgu in Niger State. As we were waiting Plateau came out and went to Obi. Benue showed up and went to Tinubu. Other states showed up, including Kebbi, where Atiku narrowly defeated Tinubu. Atiku took Sokoto, but zamfara stood strong for Tinubu. Tinubu only won one local government area in Kaduna State. Atiku's minions started celebrating. Note that Obi was non existent in the northwest.

The results that completely ruined Atiku's chances came from Kano where Atiku came a distant 3rd! At that point, the elections were over.

Goodluck Jonathan was sidelined and mocked by Yar'adua's henchmen. Within a year, he became president and went further to win the elections.

Finally, the chosen ones are not usually the popular ones. Mind who you mock today, because you have no control over tomorrow.

Politics / Re: LP, PDP Kick As US Report Says 2023 Poll Reflected Nigerians’ Will by emkz: 11:02am On Apr 26
emkz:
Still on grace. Some leaders became Nigerian leaders with minimum effort.

In the 60s, the leader of the opposition preferred to be a regional head and sent someone else to be prime minister.

After northern elements ousted Aguiyi-Ironsi, they picked a young Berom christian who was not even a General to be Head of State. The guy who took over from him did not stay long, but the new leader was in hiding when he was brought to take the seat. In 1979, an unknown teacher won the election over heavy hitters.

Let us skip to 1993. Since 1966, one name was prominent in coup circles. He received the best training but messed up when he got the seat. Then in 1999, someone on death row was brought out of jail and made president. After him, a taciturn, politically tactless fellow was made president with a quiet unknown deputy. Within 3 years, the quiet deputy took the seat. In 2015, a man previously hated for alleged religious bigotry won the seat. After him, someone who was mocked, insulted, and cursed by those who hated him won the seat.

To balance the conversation, it is the same seat many worked, lived for, died for and died in. Someone even won the election and all strings were pulled to prevent him from taking the seat. Another person has been contesting it years before many nairalanders creating silly topics were born.

One thing is clear: there is a powerful force guiding who leads Nigeria. In some cases, the lowly, the rejected, the hated, the weak are picked. Yet we mock.

Has our mockery changed anything?

My advise to everyone: Be there for people. Help as much as you can. Fight for others. Stand for the things you believe in. Stay true to your convictions.

Such is life.

Politics / Boko Haram Sacks Military Camp In Niger, Bandits Attack Emir In Zamfara by treesun: 9:45am On Apr 26
Many feared dead; residents flee Niger communities
•Security agents whisk Emir away to safety in Gusau
By Wole Mosadomi & Idris Salisu

Minna- Suspected Boko Haram insurgents yesterday sacked the military base at Allawa town in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State, as residents fled communities in the area to avoid being shot or kidnapped.

This came as bandits also yesterday attacked the palace of the emir of Zurmi, Alhaji Mohammed Bunu, but failed to kidnap him as he was whisked away to the state capital, Gusau, by security agents.

The Niger incident was said to have happened at about 1:30 am, as the insurgents “invaded the town on motorcycles with not less than three on each bike fully armed. They were said to have numbered about 200.

Our correspondent reliably gathered that the armed men must have embarked on a reprisal mission after the military neutralized about fifty of them in a fierce battle in the area last week.

An eyewitness in the area who pleaded for anonymity, also told our correspondent that a greater number of the insurgents stormed the military camp and sacked those on duty, while others invaded Allawa town and rained bullets on houses.

Cash, foodstuffs and other handy valuables were carted away from the residents of the town and other adjourning villages.
At press time yesterday, the number of casualties recorded in the village and on the side of the military and the terrorists could not be ascertained.

“There was a fierce battle between the insurgents and the military and it was around 1:30 am. It lasted for some hours.
“Because it was midnight, the number of casualties could not be ascertained,” the eyewitness said.

The military camp, it was also gathered, had been deserted by the military personnel deployed to the area.
Consequently, residents of Allawa town and adjourning communities, such as Pandogari, Kukoki, and Bassa among others, have started fleeing the area to safe grounds.

Just last week, suspected Boko Haram members ambushed and killed two military officers and four soldiers at Karaga in the same Shiroro Local Government Area.

Efforts to get confirmation and response to the issue from the state police command through the spokesman, Superintendent of Police Wasiu Abiodun, proved abortive as his number could not be reached.

Similarly, bandits yesterday attacked the palace of the emir of Zurmi, Alhaji Muhammed Bunu, but failed in their bid to abduct him.

A resident of Zurmi, Malam Aminu Sale, told our correspondent in a telephone interview, that the bandits went straight to the emir’s palace and started shooting sporadically.

Security agents whisk Emir away to safety
But, the Emir was whisked away by the security agents to Gusau.

The source said when the bandits could not succeed in abducting the emir, they destroyed one of the transformers and a telecoms mast network booster in the area.

According to the source, the bandits killed three people who were kidnapped during the incident.
He said the bandits, who entered the town at about 11:00 pm on Wednesday, also attacked the house of a former Military Administrator of Nasarawa State, Col Bala Mande, retd.

“We, the residents of Zurmi town, have witnessed a terrible situation in the bandits’ attacks. This is not the first time the bandits have entered Zurmi town, it is not the second time.

“Similarly, the bandits again on Wednesday night, attacked Maru town, the headquarters of Maru Local Government Council where they killed one person and kidnapped three people,” a resident of Maru town, who identified himself as Aminu Maru, told our correspondent on telephone.

According to him, the bandits spent more than two hours operating in the town without confrontation.

iwaeda:
Bandits have attacked the palace of the Emir of Zurmi, Alhaji Bello Muhammad Bunu, killing three people and abducting some residents of the town.

The bandits, who stormed the town around 10pm on Wednesday, according to locals, also attacked the residence of the former Military Administrator of Nasarawa State, Colonel Bala Muhammad Mande (rtd).

Traveling across Quang Binh to stunning cinematic locations

While Col. Mande, a former minister of environment under Chief Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration was not in the house, Emir Bunu was in the palace when the bandits launched the attack, Daily Trust learnt.

During the attack, the bandits also destroyed a GSM mast and burnt two generating sets located adjacent the emir’s palace.

A resident of the town who pleaded anonymity, told our reporter that upon their arrival in the town, the bandits went straight to the emir’s place and opened fire at the entrance gate in their efforts to gain access.

He said: “Gladly, the gate was locked, otherwise they would have gained access into the palace and probably reached the emir’s apartment. He was the main target because they attempted to kidnap him not long ago.

“In fact, he just returned to the town on Monday after the first attempt to kidnap him failed. The emir was silently moved to the state capital, Gusau, where he spent a week there,” the source said.

Another resident, who also did not want to be named, said when the bandits failed to gain access to the palace, they moved to the residence of the former military administrator and fired several shots at the gate, thereby damaging it.

“On their way out of the town, they killed three people and abducted some others. We don’t know the number of people abducted because when the bandits started the shooting, residents ran into the bush for safety.

“No one dared stay back when the bandits were firing shots. The magnitude of the gunshots was scary, hence, we all ran into the bush for our dear lives.

“We are calling on the government to provide enough soldiers to the town because the bandits may return again since they know the emir is in town. All they want is to abduct the emir and we don’t know why they want to kidnap him,” the resident said.

Another resident, Muhammad Inuwa said he was planning to relocate his family to Gusau as he could not endure the trauma the residents were going through due to attacks by armed bandits.

He said: “I am tired…We are struggling to cope with the economic situation and at the same time battling with banditry. The burden is too much for us to shoulder. I cannot bear it anymore.

“I am contemplating relocating my family to Gusau. At least, if they are in the state capital I can have peace of mind and concentrate on my menial job,” he said.

A father of six, Inuwa, also called on governments to come to their aid by providing them with adequate security personnel that would protect their lives and properties.

Police confirm attack

The Commissioner of Police in zamfara, Muhammad Shehu Dalijan, confirmed the attack but said he was not aware that some people were killed.

CP Dalijan, however, admitted that one of the staff of Zurmi emir’s palace was abducted by the bandits.

“He was not abducted in the palace as being speculated. Rather, he was abducted somewhere within the town.

“I can only confirm the abduction of one person and the burning of GSM service mast,” he said.

Daily Trust reliably gathered that three people: Sarkin Gida of Zurmi Emirate, Alhaji Yusuf Buhari; a local tea seller whose shop is close to the palace and one other person were those abducted by the bandits during the attack.

A relation, who preferred not to be named, said, “Sarkin Gida was not so lucky. He was coming out from the palace when the bandits started firing at the gate. So, when he started running, the bandits shouted at him and asked him to stop.

“They warned him that even if he entered his house, they would follow him inside and abduct him. So, he stopped and they kidnapped him along with the tea seller and one other person,” he said.

It was further learnt that although the bandits did not gain access into the palace, they looted all the properties in the emir’s family house also located adjacent the palace.

Another palace source, who pleaded anonymity, said the attack had shaken the entire members of the royal family, as according to him, “Our concern is the safety of the emir. It appears this time around the bandits wanted to embarrass the entire traditional institution. We will continue praying against them.

“Although we have not received additional security operatives, the personnel of the state-owned Community Protection Guard (CPG) and members of the vigilante group have been mobilised to the palace to protect the emir.”

Daily Trust recalls that Wednesday’s attack on the palace was the second of its kind in zamfara State, as the palace of Emir of Maru, Alhaji Abubakar Gado Maigari, was also attacked by bandits last year.

During the attack, a policeman and a physically challenged person were killed by the bandits.
