Politics › Police Beat Damisa Yusuf, AIT Reporter Covering Students' Protest In Bauchi by SeeHim(op): 3:07pm On Jul 30, 2021
The Nigerian Union of Journalists, DAAR HQ Chapel have condemned the alleged assault on Damisa Yusuf, a reporter with the Africa Independent Television, (AIT) in Bauchi Station, by some policemen.

It was alleged that the journalist was on Thursday, July 29, brutaly beaten, his camera damaged, handset and other belongings sized by the police while covering students protest at the College of Agriculture in Yelwa, Bauchi state.

The students were said to be protesting over a farmland said to belong to College of Agriculture Bauchi that was awarded to some land vendors through a court judgement after years of litigation.

A statement signed by the Chairman, NUJ DAAR, Patrick Abulu, said: "the Nigerian Union of Journalists, DAAR HQ Chapel condemns in strong terms alleged assault on reporter with the Africa Independent Television, (AIT) in Bauchi Station, Damina Yusuf, by a band of reckless Rapid Response Team attached to the Bauchi State Police Command on Thursday, July 29, 2021, in Bauchi metropolis,"

"Damina Yusuf was on his official assignment when he was accosted and assaulted by Police officers of the Rapid Response Team without any provocation," the statement read.

"The NUJ condemns this act of Police brutality as completely unwarranted and one that cannot be condoned in any civil society.

"The NUJ is peeved at the reckless abuse of authority by the Police against a journalist on official assignment and in the process dispossessed him of his work tools which included HD Camera, a Laptop, a mobile phone and his wallet.

"The NUJ demands immediate and comprehensive treatment of Damina Yusuf by the Police authorities and that all the items seized from him should be returned to him immediately.

"While the NUJ commends the Bauchi State Police Commissioner, CP Sylverster Alabi for ordering the State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO Muhammed Wakil to monitor the healing process of Journalist Damina Yusuf; it calls for a thorough investigation into the alleged assault.

"The NUJ wishes to use this opportunity to again call on security agencies to learn to treat journalists as partners in progress and refrain from harassing and assaulting them."

Crime › Man Who Beat Wife To Death On Cruise Ship In Front Of Kids Found Dead In Prison by SeeHim(op): 7:52am On Jul 19, 2021
Update From . COM

A man jailed for beating his wife to death on a cruise ship in front of their kids has been found dead in his prison cell.

Kenneth Manzanares, 43, from Utah in the USA, was aboard the Emerald Princess cruise ship in Alaska with his family when he beat his 39-year-old wife Kristy to death on 25 July 2017.

He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder last year and was sentenced to 30 years in prison and five years on probation.

On 14 July, Manzanares was found unresponsive in his Alaska prison cell at around 7am. He was pronounced dead at 7.42am.

The Alaska Department of Corrections said in a statement that his death was not related to Covid-19 and that foul play is not suspected.

Manzanares, Kristy, and their three kids were travelling on the cruise to celebrate their 18th wedding anniversary when Kenneth allegedly snapped after Kristy laughed at him and told him she wanted to get a divorce.

On the night of Kristy's murder, cruise ship passengers had been expecting to partake in a Sherlock Holmes murder mystery event.

So, as the murder of Kristy unfolded, many passengers presumed it was all part of the act.

Passenger Natalie Beckstrom told St. George News: "That’s kind of what everybody in the room was thinking was that it was just part of the play... So, you know, we all just kind of sat down and went on with the play."

Science/Technology › Whatsapp New Feature To Allows Users Send And Receive Messages Without Phone by SeeHim(op): 12:42pm On Jul 16, 2021
Update From . COM

Whatsapp has now released a new feature that has been the talk of the tech community for a long time, Reports.

According to Facebook engineers, the new feature would allow for the hugely popular service be used on multiple “non-phone” devices without needing to connect to the smartphone app.

The makers have confirmed that this feature will be released as a beta version and it will be circulated only to a small group of users. This is because the makers want to identify and fix all the minor bugs and issues that could show up while using this new feature. WhatsApp’s main feature, end-to-end encryption will also be available while using this feature.

Facebook engineers suggested that the software design of WhatsApp needs a complete change. They say this because the app is currently using a smartphone app as the primary device. This makes the phone the source of truth for all user data and the only device capable of end-to-end encrypting messages for another user or initiating calls. And the content shown on WhatsApp Web is basically a mirror image of the phone app.

A blog post shared by Facebook engineers on Wednesday July 14, read;

“With this new capability, you can now use WhatsApp on your phone and up to four other non-phone devices simultaneously – even if your phone battery is dead."

WhatsApp can already be used on “companion devices,” such as computers, but exchanges are routed in such a way that if a person’s smartphone is offline or has zero battery, it won’t work.

“The new WhatsApp multi-device architecture removes these hurdles” by no longer requiring a smartphone to perform every operation, the company said.

Whatsapp Engineers also made assurances that WhatsApp’s security measures will still work under the new system.

It added;

“Each companion device will connect to your WhatsApp independently while maintaining the same level of privacy and security through end-to-end encryption that people who use WhatsApp have come to expect.”
