Food for thought : Would you rather go to a country where the worse that could happen would be deportation or would you stay in a country / region where people are attacked by terrorists / suicide bombers almost every day ? |

Some Nigerians in Nigeria and in the Diaspora seem to be working tirelessly to tarnish the name of the country . Crimes ranging from fraud , forgery , drug dealing ,Money laundering , violation / r.ape to name a few can be linked to some Nigerians abroad and this has led to some sort of National stereotyping and profiling in Other African countries , Western countries and to a large extent most parts of the world and which has led to countless cases of deportation and imprisonment . In some of these cases the Nigerians are wrongfully accused and treated with injustice however in MOST cases the Nigerians are actually guilty of the crime . These days Nigerians are tagged terrorists , fraudsters , pro.stitutes , drug dealers etc and to a large extent most of those who point accusing fingers at Nigerians do so out of ignorance but then again if you take the statistics and facts on ground (Boko haram , corrupt leaders , violent conduct of some Nigerians abroad , drug dealing etc) then you would probably find some wisdom in their stereotypical mindset . We are just 3 months into 2012 and yet i have seen more stories of Nigerians in the diaspora commit crimes than i saw in 2011 as a whole so my question is this : 1. Is the moral standards / family values in the Nigerian community abroad on an all time low ? If yes why . 2. Is there a certain dysfunctional trait in the Nigerian society in Nigeria . 3. Is the society of the west (USA , UK , EUROPE) responsible for corrupting Nigerians in the diaspora ? 4. Would you be proud to be referred to as a Nigerian in general or would you prefer to be identifty yourself based on your Tribe . 5. Would you blame the Nigerian society / Nigerians back home for the dent on the image of Nigerians in the diaspora / Nigerians as a people . 6. Does the Federal Government have a role to play in all of these ?? 7. If you weren't a Nigerian what would be your perception of the average Nigerian ? 8. Is there a lack of purpose on the side of some Nigerians who travel abroad ? |

http://lindaikeji..com/2012/03/26yr-old-nigerian-sentenced-to-8years.html Ishola Adeyomi Adeoye, aged 26, from Bermondsey met a 14 year old girl in Plumstead in October 2010 and took her back to his home in Woolwich. Fully aware of her age, he gave her alcohol, waited until she passed out and then raped her. The victim awoke in the morning and was not aware of what she had been subjected to. Later that same day, having returned home, she began to feel pain and realized that something may have happened. After making a report to the police, a DNA test proved she had been raped. Officers from the Met's Sapphire Command at Bexley launched an investigation and the DNA profile taken was matched to Adeoye. He denied ever meeting the victim but changed his evidence during the trial, admitting he knew her but still maintaining his innocence. Detective Constable Pete Thompson said: "This was a horrendous act committed against a vulnerable 14 year old girl. "Adeoye tried to deny the offence and when the evidence against him was so strong he ended up changing his account. "The jury clearly saw through his lies and I am pleased with the sentencing result. "The victim showed a tremendous amount of courage and bravery to give evidence against the defendant. "I hope that this result can go some way in helping both her and her family come to terms with what has happened." Deoye had denied rape, but was convicted following a week-long trial at the Old Bailey. He was jailed for eight-and-a-half years on March 2. When would these people stop damaging the name of Nigeria abroad . |

At least 10,000 people have fled northern Nigeria for neighbouring Niger and Chad to escape a military sweep targeting members of Islamist militant group Boko Haram, officials told Reuters. Niger's government said that at least 10,000 of its citizens had returned from northern Nigeria over the past six months, and the International Organisation for Migration said more than 800 Chadians had done the same in recent days. The influx of people into Niger, a landlocked desert state that is also dealing with tens of thousands of refugees from Libya's war and a rebellion in northern Mali, could worsen an expected food shortage there this year. "According to statistics we've seen from the police, we have 10,000 Nigeriens that have returned on their own since the start of violence in Nigeria," said Boube Yaye, Niger's permanent secretary in charge of Nigeriens abroad. He added that at least 13 Nigeriens living in northern Nigeria had been falsely arrested in the sweep, and appealed to Nigerian security forces to show restraint. "I say, please, the mistreatment of innocent people has to stop. This isn't how we fix problems," he said. Boko Haram, which wants Islamic sharia applied across Nigeria, has claimed a series of bombings and other attacks that have killed scores of people in recent weeks. Styled on the Taliban, Boko Haram has become increasingly sophisticated and deadly in its methods in the past six months and widened its targets beyond attacks on police and other authority figures to include Christians. 10,000 ILLEGAL NIGERIENS IN NIGERIA |
