Technology has continued to evolve, bringing with it, ease, accessibility and efficiency. Everyone is playing catch with the Jet age technology! It's either you're learning, retrogressing or stagnant.

The way we carried out specific tasks in the last ten years has seen remarkable changes too.

It's actually considered a sin to still use old methods while carrying some tasks today. Old methods are actually a drag, reducing efficiency and increasing the required time needed to complete tasks.

Time optimization is one of the driving factors of several scalable innovations. Technology today is about completing specific tasks in good time, nobody wants to spend the whole day busy with activities that can actually be completed in few hours. You just can't help wanting to maximize your time.

We have collated 5 tools you need to acquire sufficient knowledge of to be in tune with technology, putting you among the index of technology literates.

Google Docs: Creating word documents, presentation slides and excel spreadsheets doesn't have to be limited to Microsoft Office and other remarkable PC software. If you have a google account, you'll be very much familiar with Google drive which offers about 15gb of cloud storage space per account. Google Drive is well integrated with Google docs, which means all your files are automatically stored on Google Drive from Google Docs. With a good knowledge of Google Docs, you can also create forms for surveys, interviews or a question and answer session.

WordPress: WordPress is somewhat considered as the holy grail for bloggers. In actual fact, WordPress is a content management system built on PHP (a server-side programming language for the web), that abstracts the technicality needed in creating websites. WordPress allows a non-web developer to create beautiful websites and web apps that are fully responsive (can be used by both mobile and pc users).

If you're looking to DIY a website, then you should consider learning WordPress.  Alternatives are Joomla and Drupal.

Google Scholar: Working on your thesis, dissertation or final year project is an arduous experience as you may have to consult several journals, visit the several websites of publishers just to find the right materials. Google Scholar to the rescue! Google Scholar is a search engine on its own, niched for academic articles and case laws. As a researcher, it strips off the usual unneeded information that comes with every search we make on the conventional google. This is a huge plus that increases productivity.

Slack: The emergence and evolution of the internet have seen a change in the way teams working on a project communicate. Projects now aren't just about sitting in an office all day performing an array of tasks. Members of a team working on a project are now usually remotely located. Slack is a platform specifically built to connects remotely located teams with apps, services and resources they need to get their projects completed.

VideoScribe: You must have one time or the other watched whiteboard videos online (as adverts, books reviews and so on) with a hand scribing and illustrating through images to the viewers (audio-visuals). Whiteboard video is a great alternative to using slides for presentation and particularly efficient in telling short stories, creating adverts, reviews and is only limited by the user's creative prowess.

What are you waiting for? Stay caught up with the jet age!

Science/Technology / Cyber Bullying - The Nigerian Case Study (nairaland & Facebook) by Segibambo(m): 11:48am On Sep 04, 2017
The Nigerian online community has experienced a surge of internet users in recent months; the good, the bad and the ugly. Though the antiquity of Nigerians as it relates to the unique diversity of cultures cannot be questioned. However, the existence of its amalgamation has been called into question via various social media platforms and forums.

In the light of recent reports of a proposed Hate-Speech bill being signed into the Nigerian law - it is necessary to understand the extent of Hate-Speeches in our society at large. This brings us to our interest area for this post, cyber bullying.

Cyber bullying can be intuitively broken down into two words for better understanding:

Cyber - relates to or involves computers, computer networks (the internet), information technology and virtual reality.

Bullying - using superior strength or influence to intimidate someone.

Putting this two together, we can peg cyber bullying to a simple definition: Cyber bullying is the act of using the internet, electronic and social media platforms to intimidate other persons that do not share alike views (Hate speeches). Cyber bullying may also involve extortion and black mail.

Five Forms of Cyber Bullying

There are different forms of cyber bullying and it's important to know them; the use of a generic term while describing a subject matter usually doesn't give sufficient expression.

The following are types of cyber bullying:

1. Cyber-Stalking: This is the continuous harassment, denigration and belittling of a person which may include threats of physical harm.

2. Harassment: This involves repeatedly sending messages to intentionally annoy or bother an online user.

3. Impersonation: This involves stealing someone's identity and pretending to be that person while posting derogatory or false messages online.

4. Trickery: This is the using false means or reverse psychology to collect private information such as credit card information, bank and login details.

5. Flaming: This involves online fights which may occur through emails, forums and chat rooms where there are persons with different beliefs seeking to impose their opinions on others.

The fifth form of cyber bullying, flaming, now a common scenario in the Nigerian online communities birthing several derogatory comments and generalism; a product of sentiments and biased views of the unique tribes that make up the country. We were able to collect ten screen shots that show the extent of flaming in the Nigerian online community.

Science/Technology / Re: The Dark Side Of The World Wide Web by Segibambo(m): 1:54am On Aug 30, 2017
Do you know the Dark Web is actually still a subset of what we call the deep web?

Here's a quick view of the gist:

Hmmm…. The Deep Web?! How deep you ask? Very deep I say. Considering that about 96% of the entire web is said to be deep. The remaining about 4% of the web, Surface Web, is what you and I see regularly on the Internet.

Google, Wikipedia, Youtube, Facebook, all other websites we can get access to via search engines name it, Bing, Ask, Google, etc., they all contribute to just about 4% of the entire web. Mind blowing, isn’t it?

So what is the Deep Web?

What you see on the surface web!

The Deep Web is a whole new world of possibilities both negative and positive possibilities. Loads of content accessible to authorized users and hidden from the general public reside here.

Mailbox contents – deep web; private online backup – deep web, anything the general public cannot lay their hands or eyes on is the Deep Web. Websites that you cannot access on a normal, routine day-to-day net surfing abound here. The contents of the deep web are unindexed, that is cannot be accessed via search engines, contain private information only authorized users have access to and also laden with dangerous contents.

Pretty much anything can be done with the Deep Web, anything! Rich repositories of data and a lot of good stuff that can never be found on the surface abounds and also a lot of bad stuff are present in a small part of the deep web that is very dark...

You actually don't need a passcode to access the dark web...

Though some of the websites require you have invites to join.

Basically, you need the Tor Browser to access the deep web and get dark web links you can access.

Also, websites on the dark web are not indexed by search engines -  websites on the dark web can be accessed through the Tor browser with .onion as their domain names as against .com, which is conventional for the internet.

Top 5 Shocking Facts About The Dark Web

Here are our top 5 facts about the Dark Web:

1. Our number one fact, you can't access the dark web using common browsers except through browsers such as  the Tor Browser,
You'll never access the dark web without a Tor Browser
