Thoughts on personal assets, travel history, purpose of visit, length of proposed study, family ties. I have observed that apart from verifying finances and deciphering if an applicants' true intention is to study, the next most important thing VOs take seriously is if the applicant will return to his/her home country after studies (not like they want to you to really go once you step on their soil though) and this is why they require proof of assets/property etc. especially for applicants who are mature or have been working for a while. I have also noticed that the following reasons for denial are connected: Travel history (mostly for applicants with virgin passport), purpose of visit, length of proposed stay and personal assets/finances. All these reasons all scream "Flight risk" upon introspection. Since not every applicant will have the means to purchase land/property, I have come to conclude that other mediums could be used (and are being used although not remarkably noticeable) to tackle these factors especially personal assets/finances (this reason is sometimes ticked even if you have and produced assets worth millions especially if the applicant is of marriageable age, employed but unmarried and without children). It would seem some VOs don't even consider immediate family i.e parents and siblings, a strong home tie. So in such a situation, an applicant can include an affidavit to his/her application stating his/her intention is to study and s/he will return after studies. The applicant can also get people of note (or members of organisations/community where s/he resides) to attest to his/her character in writing (recommendation letter) and attest that s/he will return after studies. Further input on this will be most welcome. |
Hello everyone, I actually wanted to make this a pleasant surprise but it turned out the opposite. I was denied last week for the second time after medicals (no medicals the first time, got a request not upfront for the second) had been passed. So I'm asking everyone here tall, short, long, (you get the picture) to offer their suggestions and input to help me move forward. Thanks in advance. Reasons were: Travel history Family ties Purpose of visit Length of proposed stay Personal assets/finance After my first denial which had so much issues (wasn't in a balanced frame of mind when I applied. Was mentally stretched due to work pressure that I even put the wrong digits as my student number) I envisaged possible reasons I could be denied for and tackled all the reasons for denial in my first application. I have a virgin passport and I'm in my late twenties. Male, unmarried and without children. My first app was denied for finances (sponsors/mine), personal assets/finances, travel history and other; that I didn't prove I was a student. Second app, I boosted my finances, added my FD statement, added property belonging to my deceased dad with valuation showing on the document (3m+) (no will though), got a more buoyant sponsor (different from first app), employment letter, work id, pension statement, added my student ID (received this during my first app), added family picture and details in my forms, itemised all my documents and worked tremendously on my SOP (hard to say if it was read) detailing my aims, why I want to study (it's a PGC in Global Business and it relates with my work history. Been working 3 years), what I plan to do on my return (venture into business), etc. To cut the long story short, I was still denied for the reasons; Travel history Family ties Purpose of visit Length of proposed stay Personal assets/finance My plan is to relaunch immediately with the same documents and add few documents (refire might imply I'm using a rifle, Applying a torpedo this time ). Please note, I do not have a job waiting for me. I do not have land and don't subscribe to quickly buying a 50k land in some distant village or entering Ghana and returning. I want this but I'm not so desperate to do anything it takes. If honesty is still a virtue, I believe it will get me there. My plan is to include a personal affidavit stating my intention to study/return after studies, get a recommendation letter from my community chairman attesting to my character, desire to study and intention to return after studies and letter of clarification stating changes made to tackle denial reasons/imploring VO I really want to study. School resumes middle of January and I'm envisaging a response (banking on it to be positive) latest January ending. Worst case scenario, I resume late. Please I need input from as many people as possible. Your thoughts in writing is the most important thing to me. Thank you and sorry about the long post. Forgive my silliness. |
ojayyy:Sorry about that Ojayyy. I think there might have been an error while filling your forms. I actually don't know if a case enquiry would suffice here or if you should just wait and hope for the best. I had such an issue in my first application. Received biometrics mail a month after submission (online). The application was eventually denied (not implying yours will be though, keep an open mind). |
thesoj:Thank you sir. *blushes in french* I'm a bro. |
humbleosazee:I think the minimum is 6 months. If s/he can get that, it's better. |
loriaidah:Kindly arrange all financial documents together in this case, yours and sponsor's. This should be under the proof of funds/finances section. Any other documents can be arranged together as well in their respective sections. |
ikem01:Basically, calculate how much your tuition for a year is (i.e tuition for two terms), + $10,000cad (room & board) + others (let's assume $5000cad), the total should be your total funds available. Have your uncle declare a little above that sum (the total funds available we just calculated) as money to be given to you per year in his sponsor letter. Mind you, his account should reflect the declared sum preferably with a handsome leftover in the account. Then let him write a heartfelt and convincing letter preferably dripping with emo detailing why he's sponsoring his dearest nephew bla bla bla. |

UceeyClaire, kaygreen, For paper route applicants, it's possible to get trv approved passport dispatched without an approval mail preceding it. Try and stay hopeful guys. PS- since medicals have been done and passed, the possibility of getting trv exists. |

How to tackle common reasons for denial 1, Travel History: Most times this is ticked in addition to other 'core' reasons for denial and is mostly for applicants who have zero travel experience (out of their home country). However, sometimes it is ticked for people who have travelling experience (why this is so remains unclear though speculatively, the idea is that it is either an error on the VO's part or the countries the applicant has travelled to is considered insignificant). Solution: Travel history is seldom (in my experience, never) a stand-alone reason for visa denial. So, travelling around the globe after a visa denial shouldn't be seen as the most ideal solution. Rather, one should explain succinctly to a VO in one's SOP why one has little or no travel history and convince VO you are not a flight risk (presenting solid home ties can help here). Tell a good story to show without doubt that you will return home after your studies. 2. Length of proposed stay and purpose of visit: Most times the two are tied together. This implies that the VO isn't convinced you're going to study or that you need the degree you're going for. It could also imply inconsistency in your academic/work background and your chosen course of study. Nine times out of ten an applicant with a First degree going for a diploma will be denied except such applicant is able to convince the VO of his/her rationale for choosing the diploma programme. Another reason why the above could be ticked is when your intended programme of study is not at all related to your background (academic/professional). Length of proposed stay may imply that the VO isn't convinced you need that much time away from your home country in pursuit of a degree or that you can obtain the needed experience in the time frame quoted. (keyword: convinced It is very likely that two different VOs might see things differently i.e where one VO feels your current job as a junior business analyst is unrelated to your chosen course of study in International Business [got this from an applicant's GCMS notes], another VO reviewing the same application may feel otherwise. All one can do is to convince as much as possible and hope/pray one's VO is eventually convinced)(This part is speculative and not a fact. Further input is needed from other members of the house) Solution: Ensure that you carefully select a programme which ties into your work or academic background or both. Go for a programme which is considered a step higher than your current degree. If you have been denied on these counts and you feel it was an oversight, justify your reasons for choosing the programme in an SOP. If you have to go for a lesser programme, give genuine reasons why. All you need to do is present your side of the story and hope for the best. VO's are human. 3. Current employment situation and personal assets/financial status: This applies mostly to applicants who have been working, are mature, unemployed, or have an unexplained study (or activity) gap. Solution: If you have been working and you neglected to prove this to the VO in a prior application, kindly address this by adding relevant employment documents in your next application eg. letter of introduction from work, employment letter, pay slips, pension statement, tax payment proof, etc. Please apply as befit your circumstance(s). There is no use adding a document that will have a VO confused. For example, an applicant who is an unpaid intern adding pay slips is contradictory and may backfire on his/her application. Only use documents that tell your story not just imitate someone's application. If you have a study/work/activity gap, you definitely need a well-worded SOP (and documents to back your story if available, these could be pictures, papers, letters etc.). Show the VO you have not been idle by demonstrating what you have been doing. Any activity which is deemed developmental (paid or unpaid) can come into play here whether it's in your church, mosque, community etc. For personal asset/financial status (mostly for mature and employed applicants), boost your account and show what assets you have in your next attempt. Fixed deposits, property, inheritance, vehicle etc., can come into play here. Basically, anything that can serve as an home-tie. Particularly, if you're unmarried, without kids, and of marriageable age, you need to provide extra solid evidence(s) of home-ties. Work on presenting evidence of deep family roots in your home country. You will be surprised but showing you have personal property, fixed assets, stock etc still fail to convince some VOs and may still result in denial on these grounds of personal assets. INSUFFICIENT FUNDS....FOR STUDIES AND PERSONAL EXPENSES In this case, the VO believes you have not shown proof that you have enough money to support yourself while studying in Canada. This happens to just about any applicant even those with more than sufficient sums in the account used. Here are some reasons why this section is ticked; The VO isn't convinced your sponsor will actually sponsor you The VO distrusts the account presented (This could be due to money lodgement: a situation where huge sums of money is deposited into an erstwhile inactive account within a short period before visa application or s/he (VO) believes the account presented is not genuine) The amount quoted in your 'funds available section' is contradictory to the amount sponsor has declared for you Sponsor did not declare any amount for you or state why s/he is sponsoring you (peculiar to applicants using relatives, extended family, family friends, uncles, aunts, non-relatives etc. The amount in the account is actually low (these are the ones I can recall at the moment. House gurus should please add any I have omitted) Solution: Fill your forms carefully and accurately especially the funds available section. Do your conversions and detail everything correctly. Ensure your sponsor declares how much will be available to you for studies, living expenses, accommodation etc. yearly or for the duration of your studies. Let sponsor's declaration be in tandem with what you fill as funds available. If you have 2,000cad and sponsor has 60,000cad, your total funds available should be 62,000cad. Ensure your sponsor (if non-relative or distant relative) does not declare everything in his/her account for you without a justifiable reason. If your sponsor (parent in this case) has to declare everything in his/her account, it's better the sponsor isn't retired or having enormous responsibilities (in this context, it means you having many younger siblings) or the sponsor has an active and provable source of income. Ensure you provide clear and genuine documents (statement of account especially). If applicable/available, add a bank recommendation letter. For a re-application, pay tuition if applicable as some schools don't accept full payment of any kind until school commences (a term at least) and show evidence of payment. Boost the account overtime (if the account was low in previous attempt) until it's sufficient or more than sufficient. The above is at best a conjecture and can be subjected to corrections and additions especially corrections. Let's continue to 'pay it forward' in one spirit. Cheers. Good day House, Please I apologise in advance for the long post below. Thanks for understanding. PhemosticLaLa, Jayd2013, yusuf000000, kindly view the post. It may prove helpful. |
SAMUELS3:Your SOA was okay. It's possible the VO wasn't convinced how much of it would be made available to you annually or for the duration of your programme. I advise you address this in your sponsor's letter preferably on company letterhead (have your sponsor declare how much s/he will give you yearly, why s/he is spending on you and what s/he hopes to benefit from such a venture i.e sponsoring you). Also ensure the sum your sponsor declares correlates with the total sum quoted by you for tuition, room & board and others section in your form. Boost your account as well and add asset(s) you have. The links below should give you more ideas; https://www.nairaland.com/2367106/travelling-canada-part-8/382#37173777 https://www.nairaland.com/2557850/travelling-canada-part-9/194#40940153 |
afolaseg:1. Yes, you can change but reflect this in your SOP. However, tackle other reasons for your denial too. (To clear any ambiguity, by reflect I mean you should write that you have chosen so so computer course and highlight reasons/motive for choosing it, what you hope to achieve by getting a degree of it etc.) 2. If you have new information to update on your CV, please do that. It won't hurt. Yes, you need a new SOP to explain the change in #1 above among other things you need to tell the VO. 3. Yes, enter your UCI number in your new application. We can only hope it affects your new application positively. Each application is treated as a fresh application to the best of my knowledge. |
SAMUELS3:You should probably shed more light on your application so the house can offer informed assistance. For example when you say "my company", do you mean a company you work for or you own the company? Also, how much is your tuition and duration of programme? Are you a self sponsor or otherwise? Once you identify these points, all you need to do is identify if there's need to review the amount (and the amount your sponsor declared would be made available) you quoted for funds available in your application. Based on the first reason you mentioned, you might consider paying tuition (at least for a term) and showing evidence of payment in your next application. |
ikem01:Use the passport you intend to travel with. |
vickyehi:If your other sponsor is willing, by all means let him sponsor you provided his account is in good stead. |
loriaidah:I think you're okay with these but you can add your marriage certificate. Try and cross-examine the information you filled in all your forms thoroughly. That might give you pointers to what documents you may need to add. |
vickyehi:Hi vickyehi, You can use the link below. However, apply only documents that are relative to your circumstances/situation. https://www.nairaland.com/2367106/travelling-canada-part-8/25#34710434 |
OTUNBACODED:I don't know what other reasons were ticked but I advise you concentrate on fixing those. You could easily obtain birth certificates of your brother and pictures to add in your next attempt. Could be an oversight on part of the VO. |
Jayne07:I think so. It is related. Research and familiarise with your chosen programme so you can explain your motive for choosing it to the VO in your SOP. Look for common points in your first degree and use this as a point of reference for choosing your intended programme (e.g courses you did relating to health, safety or you can mention your final thesis topic as well if it had something to do with safety measures, disease prevention etc.). |
Jayne07:Use the ones you have. Your school/degree certificate, NYSC certificate, awards that you have gotten over the years can also serve. Family is one of the best (and commonly used) home ties and you have that. Use a family picture if you can. |
Jayne07:Use the ones you have. Your degree certificates, NYSC certificate, awards that you have gotten over the years can also serve. Family is one of the best (and commonly used) home ties and you have that. Use a family picture if you can. |
Berexio1, Arcayo, ...Water under the bridge. It's nothing. |
Jayne07:Things that can serve as home ties; Your family which you already mentioned. Proof of future employment (if applicable) Evidence of membership of professional/religious bodies etc. Bank account(s) statement (Fixed deposit inclusive) Pension statement Physical asset(s) e.g land, car, property etc. eTax card Driver's license Note that you cannot have everything. All you need do is apply as your situation dictates. |
berexio1:I am sorry if I have offended you by being off-point. Yet, I fail to see how insulting me helps the person in question. You could have helped him a lot more by focusing on the issues you have so clearly observed I neglected. It's that easy. |
ikem01:Lol, yes you know what your intent is but you have to prove this beyond doubt in your application. Using your uncle's personal SOA is not a must but it may help to show close relationship between you both. Also, it's may seem weird for your uncle to feel and state he's sponsoring you to fulfil CSR. Are you a staff of his company? Even at that, You're his nephew! |
ikem01: whether I was accepted to study at the Canadian institution 2. Ability to lay for my trip and support myself 3. Whether am inadmissible in canada 4. Whether I would leave after my stay Relationship with sponsor 1. Can you please state what your first degree was in and the programme you're going for? (If both programmes are related, I suspect this is a case of an incorrectly filled information on your form i.e your student number or Institution's DLI number etc. which can be easily rectified. For #2, ensure your uncle states why he's sponsoring you and how much will be made available to you annually. This should cover your flight to school as well ( in others). Also, include a notarised affidavit of sponsorship to back up the sponsorship declaration. 2. For reason #3; This is tied to 1 above. It shows the VO isn't convinced you're going to study. (incorrectly filled info again either in your questionnaire/form or both. (also easily amendable) 3. Reasons #4 and #5 are related. All you need to do is work on your home ties to Nigeria. If possible, have your uncle provide you his personal SOA instead of the company SOA you used previously. The number of terms you choose to pay for is your choice and I don't think it shows desperation. Rather, it should be evidence of preparedness on your part to study in Canada (IMO). It depends on your perspective. [edited] P.S- you could also request for your gcsm file to better understand the VOs mind. |
