Nairaland / General / Man Dies Stealing Fuel From Tanker by SenatorM(m): 6:06pm On Oct 07, 2013
Sokoto – The decomposed body
of a 25-old-man, Zayyanu
Abubakar, has been evacuated
from inside a petrol tanker
compartment where he
suffocated and died since Friday,
Oct. 4, while stealing petrol.
The deceased fell inside the tank
of the vehicle with registration
number, XA 640 TBW, parked
along Sokoto western bye-pass,
loaded with 33,000 litres of
petrol.
The deceased was alleged to
have earlier on the night of the
fateful day, stolen 20 litres from
the fuel compartment and had
returned for more when he
ended up inside.
It took the combined efforts of
the officers of the state fire
service, the police from Kwanni
Division, Sokoto and some good
Samaritans, four hours – 8 a.m to
12 noon – to remove the
decomposed body from the
tankers belly.
Yahaya Mohammed, a relative of
the deceased said at the scene
of the incident that Abubakar
was warned by his brothers
against the act.
“He told his siblings about his
earlier successful exploits and
they warned him against going
back into the vehicle.
“He had told them that he nearly
suffocated in the first attempt,
but unknown to them, he went
back, got trapped and died,”
Mohammed said.
A fire serviceman, Zayyanu Jelani
said, “we were here since
around 8.00a.m when we were
alerted about the ugly
development.
“This is the first time we are
recording this type of
unfortunate incident in Sokoto
apart from fire incidents on fuel
tankers.”
The spokesman of the state
police command, DSP Al-
Mustapha Sani confirmed the
story and added that the police
would thoroughly investigate the
incident.
NAN reports that the remains of
the deceased had been
deposited at the morgue of
Uthmanu Danfodio University
Teaching Hospital, Sokoto. ( NAN)

Nairaland / General / Kokori Women Protest Against Military Naked by SenatorM(m): 5:59pm On Oct 07, 2013
Hordes of naked Kokori
women in Ethiope East Local
Government Area of Delta
State trooped to the streets
on Sunday afternoon in
protest of the recent siege
on the community by
soldiers of the Joint Task
Force (JTF).
The women, numbering well
over hundred, expressed
their grievances in the
manner that their husbands
have fled the community due
to the military operation that
followed the arrest of highly
wanted criminal, Kelvin
Oniarah.
The soldiers were deployed
to the community after
Friday’s attack on the palace
of the Ovie of Agbon
Kingdom, HRM Ogurimerime
Ukori 1 by armed youths
believed to belong to
Oniarah’s kidnap gang.
During the protest, the
women sang mournful
songs about the fate of
Kokori, saying the soldiers,
having prevented their
husbands from returning
home, should come and
sleep with them and perform
all other duties of their
husbands.
Education / ASUU:nupeng To Join Strike by SenatorM(m): 11:36am On Oct 07, 2013
The Nigerian Union of
Petroleum and Natural Gas
Workers (NUPENG) has said it
will go on a solidarity strike
with the Academic Staff Union
of Universities (ASUU), if the
Federal Government does not
comply with the agreement it
signed with the lecturers'
union.

NUPENG accused the
government of being insensitive
to the plight of Nigerians.
It noted that the way the
government has been acting on
the ASUU strike portrayed it as
unconcerned about the nation's
suffering.

NUPENG's National President
Igwe Achese spoke at the
weekend in Lagos when he
announced the union's
delegates' conference which will
hold on October 17 in Port
Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.
Achese noted that the "nation's
foundation is shaking because
our future leaders and their
children are not attending our
local universities".
According to him, the Federal
Government owes it as a duty to
end the strike.
The union leader urged the
government to respect the
agreement it signed with ASUU
in 2009, adding that the
government should see itself as
an employer of labour.
He said: "It is particularly
shocking that the government
has carried on as if everything is
normal, without bothering
about the fate of the students
who have been marooned at
home since the strike started.
Perhaps this is because the
children and wards of those at
the helm of affairs are
luxuriating in schools abroad, or
because they are too
comfortable to worry about
their less-fortunate
compatriots."
Achese attributed the incessant
strikes in the country to the fact
that the Ministry of Labour had
not been performing its duties.

Crime / Boko Haram Strikes Again: 20 Killed, Palace Burnt In Fresh Attack by SenatorM(m): 6:38pm On Oct 06, 2013
Fifteen suspected
Boko Haram and
five residents were
yesterday killed in a fresh
attack by the insurgents on the
sleepy town of Damboa in
Borno State.

Some suspected Boko Haram
insurgents were said to have
invaded Damboa, a small
community about 87 kilometres
away from Maiduguri, the state
capital, in the early hours of
yesterday while Muslim
worshippers were observing
their early morning prayers
(Subhui) in the mosque.

A statement signed by the acting
spokesman of the 7 Division of
the Nigerian Army, Maiduguri,
Captain Aliyu Danja on behalf of
the General Commanding Officer
(GOC), said the insurgents
sneaked into the sleepy town at
about 4.30am on Saturday. "The
terrorists whose strength is
unknown sneaked into the
town at about 4.30am,
attacked worshippers in a
mosque and killed five of them
who came to say their morning
prayers," Danja stated.
He said the attackers set ablaze
the District Head (Hakimi) Palace,
his house and some shops
around the area, adding that
soldiers from the 7 Division
intercepted the insurgents while
the attack was going on, and
subsequently engaged them in a
shootout, killing 15 of the
attackers, adding that some of
the attackers "fled in disarray."
Items recovered from the
insurgents, according to the
spokesman, include one rocket
propelled grenade tube, two
Rocket Propelled Grenade
Bombs, five AK 47 rifles, a pick
up van and assorted
ammunition.
"The General Officer
Commanding (GOC) 7 Division
Nigerian Army wishes to thank
the general public for their
resilience and efforts in
providing timely and useful
information to security
agencies," he said, even as he
urged the people to be security
conscious by "reporting any
movement of unknown person/
persons within their localities to
the nearest army or security
agencies."
He also reassured the people of
the commitment of the Nigerian
Army to bring the insurgency to
an end.

Politics / 2015 Election: Jonathan Has Already Won- Dokubo Asari by SenatorM(m): 6:46pm On Sep 29, 2013
Despite the opposition to the
2015 re-election bid of President
Goodluck Jonathan, Leader of the
Niger Delta People’s Volunteer
Force (NDPVF), Alhaji Mujahid
Dokubo-Asari, has said there is
nothing to worry about, that the
President has already won.
Dokubo-Asari’s statement is
coming at a time opposition to
the 2015 presidential ambition
of Jonathan by the Alhaji Kawu
Baraje-led faction of the Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP), is on the
prowl.
He wondered why Jonathan
would be talking and discussing
with Governor Sule Lamido’s
group whom he called political
miscreants, people who do not
have political value.
Dokubo-Asari said Lamido and
his group were irrelevant to the
realization of the president’s
ambition, querying: “If Lamido
could not deliver Jigawa State to
Jonathan in 2011, of what
relevance is he in realizing it in
2015?”
Reacting to Lamido’s interview in
last week’s Sunday Sun in which
the governor said, “Dokubo-Asari
is a small boy, his entire clan, I
don’t think they are up to one
million people. If his entire clan
are not up to one million people,
you just ignore him,” Dokubo-
Asari lampooned Lamido, saying
that people like him should not
even be listened to at all.
“Jonathan has already won.
Whether they vote or they don’t
vote, that is their business. He
will win and if they like, they
should go and hang themselves.
For people like Sule Lamido to
even be listened to, is very
regrettable. This is a man who is
living according to his
antecedents; a man who rebelled
against the greatest Northern
political ideologue, Mallam Aminu
Kano. These people have never
been on the side of their people.
“I would forgive him because
Ijaw people are not protesting
about scientific census. It is
people like Sule Lamido that are
protesting that the chairman of
the National Population
Commission should be sacked. It
clearly shows that they have
something to hide.
“There is no where in the world
where the arid part of the
country is more populated. All
over the world, population is at
the coast. Population centers are
at the coast, where there are
economic activities. We live in a
scientific world. So, when the
time comes, he will know. We
don’t even need to be 200
people to teach him a lesson and
put sand in his mouth.

Nairaland / General / Woman Who Masterminded Nairobi Mall Attack Samanthra Was In Nigeria by SenatorM(m): 5:04pm On Sep 26, 2013
According to the
newspaper, "In
Nigeria, where police
forces are notoriously
corrupt, there were
reports that she (Lewthwaite)
was almost caught a while ago,
but she bribed her way out of
trouble."
Read the full report below:
"If White Widow Samantha
Lewthwaite is on the run she
will be hard to catch. If a
Lewthwaite were to be on the
run in Kenya, Nigeria or
Somalia, it would be a easier to
evade detection than in Europe.
"She would be wearing a veil,
and sensitivities about
searching Muslim women
would be observed so she
could easily slip through
difficult checkpoints.
"In Nigeria, where police forces
are notoriously corrupt, there
were reports she was almost
caught a while ago, but she
bribed her way out of trouble,"
the news report said "Extremist
communities such as al-
Shabaab are tight-knit in these
countries, making it difficult to
recruit agents to penetrate
them and trace her.
"And Lewthwaite may hold a
great deal of power as a special
kind of jihadist, having proved
her worth in previous attacks.
"As a white convert mum and
widow of a 7/7 bomber, she
would be invaluable
propaganda and would
command huge loyalty.
"Also, the austere nature of her
adopted culture means she
would rarely go out, so there
would be few opportunities to
follow her.
