This wouldn't work against a team like Man City but when you know your opposition and study how they play, it's great to device a plan to counter them in order to have an edge. This is what birthed ultra defensive tactics against a possession obsessed teams

Barca would never give city or Bayern that much time on the ball.

With chelsea, it is very dicey. If they sense that you're a possession based team and want to control possession, they'd go into ultra defensive mode. Conserve their energy and try to hit you on counter. That was how they played against city and barca 1st leg. And if you allow chelsea to pack their double decker, you'd be lucky to get a goal.

With city and Bayern, it is totally a different ball game. They would want to match us strength for strength. If we give them possession, they'll hurt us. EV knows this.

It was the game plan.

Surely, the chelsea team that struggled to get a miserly 29% of ball possession in their own home didn't suddenly become so good as to be chunking a huge 43% in our home.

In the 1st leg, we spent a lot of time with the ball without creating any real chances. Chelsea on the other hand were able to catch our team in compromising 2v3 situations a couple of times leading to yellow cards to rakitic and busquet. It was obvious their game plan was to catch us on dangerous counters which was why Conte chose to start with a fast player like Pedro and played hazard as a false 9 so he could always drop deep to launch those counters.

EV had to device a plan to counter this, that is why he allowed them a part of the possession. His plan was, if we allow chelsea time on the ball and allow them play some useless passes, they'd not be able to play to their plan which was counter-attack.
EV prioritized those who should be allowed time on the ball and those who shouldn't.

Notice how Victor Moses was given much space because he wasn't seen as a threat, but immediately hazard or William held the ball, we always tried to close in as soon as we could.

That was the plan, allow them hold possession with the less dangerous players, soak the pressure, just don't let the ball get to the dangerous players. That is what we call useless possession and it was what barca had in the 1st leg.

If we had come into the game with the intention of controlling the ball possession, chelsea would have gone into defensive mode and try to catch us on counters. By allowing them time on the ball, they played into our hands, notice that the second and third goal came from misplaced passes chelsea players made when they were passing the ball around and keeping possession.

Watch Madrid fans tell you it is more difficult to score in Ronaldo's champions league than messi's champions league.

Something in me wants dembele to start.

If he is anywhere near as confident as he was against Malaga, then he gets my nod. We need some one that is able to take the attention off messi, or someone that is able to pounce on chances when all attention is on messi.

We need to make use of width. Chelsea's 5-man defence means centrally, They'll choke everywhere. We need to stretch their wing backs using Roberto and Alba, leaving space for dembele or iniesta to weave their magic.

Being a lightweight, dembele is going to be easily fouled also, earning us free kicks in dangerous positions which hopefully will be converted by messi.
