ABUJA—The Federal Government yesterday issued a stern warning to churches, parents, guardians, as well as individual or corporate body who have taken keen interest in the identification and stigmatization of children as witches or wizards to desist or face the full wrath of the law.

Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Idris Kuta, who gave the warning at a 3-day technical meeting on stigmatization of children as witches or wizards, said the provision of law on child protection was clear and must be respected by every body.

Hon Kingsley Kuku: By midnight of October 4, 2009, we recorded 20,192 that disarmed and accepted amnesty. From the agitation of others 6,166 were added. We are talking about 26,358 recipients of amnesty as proclaimed by Mr. President.

“Of course, we all know that certain agitations are going on all over the country, even in the Niger Delta, there are people talking of third phase, fourth phase. You know these things will not end but the government has taken a position and the position is very clear.

“Let me make this very clear that the current amnesty programme is actually a solution by this country under our beloved late President Umaru Yar’Adua and his then Vice President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, who is today the president of this country, working together, proclaimed amnesty to ensure peace in the Niger Delta. It is a special programme.

That programe can never be politicised. It can never be mixed up with any other issue at all. It is a special programme meant to address a special problem. That has been done.

The Rivers Police Command has announced the rescue of the five youth corps members abducted in the state 12 days ago.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that unknown gunmen kidnapped the four female and one male corps members at Omerelu in Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state where they had gone for community service.

Rivers Commissioner of Police Suleiman Abba told NAN in Port Harcourt on Monday that the corps members were rescued in a forest at Omerelu around 8pm on Sunday.

He said one Sanga Prince was arrested in connection with the kidnap, while the other suspects fled.

The commissioner said that the corps members had been handed over to the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brig-Gen Maharazu Tsiga "in good health''.
