Your 'well run' qualifier makes all the difference when speaking about monopoly. Only God can run a monopoly well, and since God is not going to come down to run companies here on earth, forget about well run monopolies, that's never going to happen. Try Animal Farm, try USSR, and try China, it never works on the long run. So, no monopoloy is a good monopoly, not matter how 'well run'.
The only concern of our developing goverment should be security, customs, and a few othe regulatory agencies. Our government should not be in the business of runing all sorts of corporations.
Well said. Clap Clap.

The only PRIVATIZATION we had in the telecoms industry were those of NITEL and Mtel and they both were monumental failures. What worked in the industry was LIBERALIZATION and I've always been amazed at how these two completely different economic terms have been lumped together and shoved down the throats of ignorant Nigerians with the success of liberalization ascribed to the glaring failures of privatization in order to justify the foolishness of our decision makers.
So basically, market liberalization absolutely works, but monopoly privatization does not.
But how do you rally people around 'liberalization'? People don't know what that word means.

Is the oil sector not part of the manufacturing sector? It makes no sense to exclude it.
BusinessRe: Nigeria’s Cocoa Exports Climbed 47% Last Year by Seun(mod): 2:44am On Jun 04, 2011
@ekt_bear: Exactly.  We need to stop relying on all these cheap commodities.  Let's export chocolates, beverages, etc and make much more.  Even in the oil sector we need to be exporting LNG, plastics, etc and  not crude oil.  You can't make much by exporting cheap unprocessed commodities.
CrimeRe: Nigerian Teen Girls Rescued From Clinic Accused Of Selling Babies After Raid by Seun(mod): 7:53am On Jun 03, 2011
Honestly, they should just release them and ask their parents to take care of the babies. Enough.

She will buy the idea. Women operate based on how they feel. If she feels like marrying you, she will.
Car TalkRe: The Fuel Consumption Thread - How Thirsty Is Your Car? by Seun(mod): 5:44am On Jun 03, 2011
That's not good enough.  On a Nigerian forum, people shouldn't have to manually convert figures to the local units.  It's not the same thing.  The figures should be presented in kilometers and liters and, if need be, you can include instructions for converting the figures to colonial units.
RomanceRe: A Man Says Hi And You Move Into His House by Seun(mod): 3:29am On Jun 03, 2011
It goes both ways.  It could have been titled "a woman says hi and you invite her into your house".  Think about it, the woman lives in your house for free, spends your money, prevents you from meeting other girls, and you think you're the one cheating her?  Well, you should think again!
Nairaland GeneralRe: How Do You Treat Someone That's Stuck Up In Themselves? by Seun(mod): 3:21am On Jun 03, 2011
Just let them be. The person may be over-compensating for lack of attention or something.

Car TalkRe: The Fuel Consumption Thread - How Thirsty Is Your Car? by Seun(mod): 9:45am On Jun 02, 2011
I was going to promote this thread, but then I noticed that it was all about US and UK gallons and miles and whatnot.  Nothing about the system we use in Nigeria, which is kilometers and liters.  So I suggest that a new thread be created with units that Nigerians can relate to. Thanks.

HealthRe: Zenith Bank Donates N300m Hospital To Lagos State Govt by Seun(mod): 2:14pm On Jun 01, 2011
I think the only good public hospitals are the teaching hospitals.  The doctors tend to be knowledgeable and skilled, but even so the service remains horrible with things like blood and oxygen not being available when needed and a pervasive rude attitude towards patients.  If this hospital is not destined to be a teaching hospital, then I think it will fare better in private hands.
HealthRe: Zenith Bank Donates N300m Hospital To Lagos State Govt by Seun(mod): 2:05pm On Jun 01, 2011
I think they should have donated it to competent private hands.  This hospital may die young.

^As long as nobody was forced to give these mog their hard earned money, they did so willingly . . . just like no one is forced to go to the casino and throw their money away.

Yes it is ethically despicable, but it is not illegal. We should rather chastise the sheep and encourage them to give to the poor instead.
Sure they should be allowed to continue their 'legal' business, but they shouldn't get any special tax breaks!
