Twenty-five soldiers of the Nigerian Army have challenged the death sentence handed down to them. The soldiers – 21 private soldiers, two corporals and two lance corporals filed a suit against the Nigerian army and the Chief of army staff, Kenneth Minimah, over the death sentence handed to them on December 24, 2014. The soldiers, represented by the Falana and Falana chambers, in their summon questioned the refusal of Mr. Minimah and the Nigerian army to make public, the findings of the general court marital; and described it as illegal. They also sought to determine if the refusal of the defendants to either confirm or review the death sentence, or make a copy of the judgement delivered by the court martial available, is legal. They also sought to determine whether the death sentence on the soldiers can be carried out pending the determination of the court of appeal against the conviction and sentence which the accused intend to file at the appellate court. The soldiers sought to determine whether the death sentence can be carried out without an approval or mercy from the president. And if it is legal to deprive them of visits from lawyers and family members. The soldiers then sort a declaration that they are entitled to visitation from their lawyers and family members and a review of the judgment. The soldiers, in their suit, sought 12 reliefs. They asked that the punishment should not be carried out pending the determination of an appeal court, an approval or a prerogative mercy from the president. Other reliefs are suspending the execution of the judgement, making the findings of the court martial public and directing Mr. Minimah and the Nigerian army, to permit family members and lawyers to visit the soldiers and for the The originating summons taken out by Funmi Falana and Samuel Ogala of the Falana and Falana chambers stated that if the Nigerian army and Mr. Minimah do not make a court appearance in person or through a legal representative, the judge may carry on as it deems fit and expedient. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/184287-boko-haram-nigerian-soldiers-sentenced-to-death-challenge-judgement-sue-army.html |
It has become a deafening lamentation of sorts from the menfolk, on the rising infidelity amongst ‘married women’. Some men even claimed that the women have toppled their male counterparts in the game of ‘cheating’. I have been studying the issue for some time and what I detect as the root cause of rising infidelity amongst the married women in this society is ‘suppressed emotions’. Our men have carried their ‘it is a man’s world’ mentality too far. It has become an implied ‘you had be playing with fire’ (in this environment) not tolerate a man’s ‘marital excesses’ as a woman. Women have been made to endure all sorts in the name of ‘staying married’ or risk being judged by the society and our men seem to be cashing in on this-as evidenced by the gross infidelity, economic irresponsibility, emotional and physical abuse (on the part of the men), which pervade most marriages. It’s almost like the women are tired of running from pillar to post for ‘solutions’ ,especially when all a woman seems to get wherever she looks for ‘solace’ is ‘You have no choice, try and manage’ The reality in marriages of these days is not what a lot of women bargained for and some of them (who are determined not to end up at psychiatric homes-due to emotional breakdown) have simply resorted to coping with the situation whichever way they deem fit. It has simply occurred to a lot of women that ‘every woman can be admired’ (and it matters not her age, marital status, shape or size)… there will always be a man somewhere, whose interest that a woman can ‘tick’. This is not in any way justifying ‘infidelity’ (in any form) as I believe (absolutely) that a woman that is under the roof of a man has no business being entangled with another man. If the setting you call a marriage leaves you more miserable than happy, there is no need to continue living a lie-if you must remain in such a setting-only to be ‘peeping out’. I believe in being true to myself Every man should realize that a woman he makes to feel cherished is the best thing that can happen to him. Such a woman will always go the extra mile in her walk with you. But a woman that you have scorned (via your attitude) will also prove to you that the devil does not live far. I believe that the rising infidelity amongst the married female folk is a backlash of their failed expectations from the men…the hardest woman to seduce is one who is emotionally fulfilled! https://9javibes.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/cheating_on_husband-300x234.jpg |

President Muhammadu Buhari has announced Senator Ahmed Lawan as the most possible new Senate President. His candidacy was the most preferable because he matched all five criteria required by the President of Nigeria and APC from a person to fill this vacancy. These criteria listed below. During the meeting at Aso Rock between the President of Nigeria and the members of the National Working Committee of the APC party Muhammadu Buhari has finally announced Senator Ahmed Lawan, representing Yobe State, as the most possible new Senate President. His major rival contesting for this post is Bukola Saraki, representing Kwara. However, in Muhammadu Buhari’s opinion, Ahmed Lawan matches best all five criteria demanded by the President of Nigeria and APC from the candidate for this position. First of all the next Senate president shouldn’t be embroiled in any of major corruption scandals, which could cast a shadow on his candidacy in public’s opinion. The second criterion required from the candidate is that he should be one of the most valuable political figures among senators qualifying for the post. Third criterion was voiced by Muhammadu Buhari during the meeting between president and members of the National Working Committee of the ruling All Progressives Congress at Aso Rock. According to the results of the meeting, the person should represent another geo-political zone than the person who used to be the president of Senate. “The president explained that the North Central part of Nigeria has held the Senate presidency for long enough. He therefore disclosed that the post should be allowed to move to another geo-political zone,” a source, who declined to be identified, informed the press on the results of the meeting. Muhammadu Buhari also reportedly stated that the new Senate president should be from the zone which gave the majority of votes to APC during recent general election. Combining with the third criterion it means that, since the North East zone gave the ruling party the second largest number of votes in recent elections, the person to fill this position should represent exactly this geo-political zone of Nigeria. The fifth criterion seems to be that Muhammadu Buhari simply doesn’t favour Bukola Saraki, despite the fact that many influential APC members are backing his candidacy. “We now know that Muhammadu Buhari doesn’t favour Senator Saraki as the new Senate president,” told the press one of the participants of the meeting who declined to be identified. The President of Nigeria concluded the meeting at Aso Rock, demanding from participants to decide on the new Senate president’s candidacy no later than tomorrow. Source: Naija Pips

Information Technology (IT) has become a major driver in virtually all sector of the economy. Therefore, an individual who is seeking employment in this technology driven society must possess some essential IT skills. It is not just enough to know the basic principles of operating a computer, there are quite a number of other IT features that get used daily in the day to day running of organizations. Here are 6 IT skills you must have if you want to have a cutting edge in Nigeria's employment market. Most of them are soft skills, they will not just help you to get the job but also aid your performance on the job. 1. Email Handling Skills Most of the internal communication done in corporate organizations are done through email. Most people have email addresses but don't really know how to use them for official purposes. Therefore, a job seeker must learn email etiquettes in order to be able to use email effectively. 2. Social Media Skills Social media presence gives you the advantage to get jobs, change jobs and rise in your career steadily without much hitch. There are, however, rules and guidelines that must be followed in order to get the best out of them. Doing the right things with the social media can help you get jobs and connections and also give you a better posture online. LinkedIn, Twitter, Google+ are good professional platforms you can use. Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and so on can also be used to this advantage. 3. Web Search Skills Searching the web is not just about using Google. You must possess a high sense of judgment to be able to identify credible information online. The truth is; the internet is not so regulated and anyone can just post anything. You must, therefore, be able to identify credible sources of information in your career field. Take online job sites for example; not all online job sites are real. One must be inquisitive to follow through and verify all sources. 4. Multimedia Presentation Skills Multimedia or Powerpoint presentation skills are essential. Most companies demand reports from their employees from time to time. These reports are not just required in word format but in presentation format as well. You may be asked to come and present a report to the board in a conference room and this will require itemizing your points in bullets and using pictorial descriptions where necessary. You may need to consult Slideshare and other presentation sites online to see different presentation styles. 5. Data Management Skills When you begin to use the computer for IT related works, the tendency to generate a lot of data is high and managing such data is a challenge for many people. You must seek to know how to manage the data you generate very well. This is also the era of cloud computing where you can store your data safely in online cloud storage centers. Examples are Google Drive, Drop box etc. 6. Mobile Computing Mobile phones in the form of smartphones are now being configured a lot more to work like computers. So the need to be more conversant with the way to mobile-compute is necessary. There are many apps that have been developed to aid your day to day work activities. You must, therefore, be conversant with the apps and use them to your advantage. Most of the skills mentioned above and many others are not hard to come by, you can learn them freely on the internet. You can also ask a friend who you know is more proficient in them to put you through. The world is moving fast technologically and you must be up to date on new developments. Three final year Nursing Students of Edo State School of Nursing, have reportedly gang-raped a six-year old girl in Benin. Already, the police have arrested two of the students while the third suspect in crime is said to have absconded. The suspects had allegedly committed the crime after luring the little girl from a makeshift store within the school hostel, while her mother was away. Mother of the victim was said to have discovered the defilement of her daughter following complaints of stomach pain, just as she was said to have also stooled and urinated profusely. Following the discovery, the victim’s mother promptly reported the incident at the Aideyan police division, which led to the arrest of the two students, while the third suspect allegedly absconded. Besides, the incident was also reported to the Principal of the school and the Edo State Commissioner for Health. reports that a source close to the family of the victim told journalists in Benin that the the girl is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed medical facility. “The little girl said that when they (suspects) took her there (hostel), they tied her hands and mouth. But she was able to identify the three of them,” the source said. Principal of the school, Mabel Omobude, who confirmed the case while speaking to journalists on phone, said the case has been reported to relevant authorities for further investigation. “Yes, we are aware. The case was reported to the Director of Nursing Services. The Commissioner of Health is aware. She wrote a letter to the Commissioner of Health which was sent to my director to investigate. That was just Thursday and we have started our own investigation,” she said on telephone. Also commenting on the incident, the Coordinator of Child Protection Network, Ms. Jennifer Ero, while calling for stiff penalties for the suspects, noted that the mother of the girl had been subjected to intimidation for reporting the case. “Because she owns a shop there (in the school hostel), they are threatening to eject her because she went to the public with what happened. They want her to keep silent over it,” Ero said. http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2015/06/01/3-nursing-school-students-gang-rape-girl-6-in-benin/ |
President Muhammadu Buhari monday expressed his condolences to the governor and people of Anambra State, over the gruesome incident that took place on Sunday, in which 60 people lost their lives when a petrol tanker crashed into a busy bus station in Onitsha. In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the president described the incident as a sad and unfortunate loss. He said it was even more unfortunate by the number of families who are currently mourning the loss of their loved ones. “My deepest sympathies are with you at this most trying time,” Buhari said. He equally extended condolences to the Vice-president of the United States of America, Joe Biden, who lost his son, Bea, to cancer. “As someone who has lost a child, I understand how painful and almost inconsolable it can be. The government and people of Nigeria stand with you at this trying moment for your family,” the president said. He added that only God could offer comfort to both the governor and people of Anambra, and to Vice-President Biden. He prayed that God would comfort Biden’s family. https://cdn.akamai.thisdaylive.com/0bef99d6-acf5-4e2c-9779-8fa02ba3fcd4/assets/170315F-Muhammadu-Buhari.jpg?maxwidth=400&maxheight=540 http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/more-news/184175-buhari-condoles-anambra-joe-biden.html |

The Senior Staff Union, the Non-Academic Staff Union and the National Association of Academic Technologists of the Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, have embarked on a no-work protest over salaries owed their members since March 2015. They have vowed not to return to work until the three months salaries are paid. The strike has brought the school to another period of closure for the second time after an earlier strike by the Academic Staff Union of the university was called off. There were indication that ASUU is in support of the strike action even though it did not openly endorse it. The ASUU Chairman in EKSU, Prof Olufayo Olu-Olu, said the union could not take a lead role in the protest because it had yet to obtain approval from its congress. Academic activities didn’t hold Friday as students could not enter the school premises following the closure of the entrances to the school by the aggrieved workers. The Chairman of SSANU, Kolawole Falade, said the unions arrived at the decision to embark on a protest at its meeting held on Tuesday. He said, “The three unions-SSANU, NASU and NAAT met under the Joint Action Committee on Tuesday and decided to embark on the protest to demand payment of our three months salaries. “We have also not received our earned allowances from 2012 up till date. We also need a Governing Council of the university. “There is also the need for the State Government to increase the monthly subventions to the university from N260 million because of the College of Medicine.” http://www.premiumtimesng.com/regional/ssouth-west/184029-ekiti-varsity-shut-as-non-academic-staff-protest-unpaid-salaries.html https://i57.tinypic.com/2nv6kon.jpg |

Whether or not this is true, grapevine has it that outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan had confided in a prominent Nigerian business mogul immediately after the elections that all said and done, he was glad he did not win the election because his first major challenge would have been how to pay salaries. If it is true he said that, then, it was no effect of a post-defeat trauma. With the deluge of information at his disposal as the Commander-in-Chief, it can be taken that he knew the extent to which things are now bad and had probably done a rethink of some of the actions of his inglorious regime. And as it has come to be known, practically all the states are unable to pay salaries today, including the certified healthy ones. It is also not unexpected that the issue of inability of states to pay salaries has become a subject of recriminations amongst stakeholders. A couple of days back, if you switched on to international media (before the oil marketers called off their strike), the news about Nigeria was one of a country shutting down at the twilight of an administration handing over to another. A few radio stations shutdown early. Banks followed suit immediately as well as telecommunications companies. The nation was gradually inching to the precipice before reason prevailed and respite came, albeit not completely. The ugly manifestations of the economy are clearly a product of the incompetence and lack of capacity of the Jonathan administration in the management of the nation and the many shades of her character. And rather than seek help with a view to redressing a majority of the crises that were biting hard, it chose to cover up and manage them at even costlier expense. But that didn’t change the character trait of an unsustainable economic model of the Jonathan administration. That is why Nigeria is where it is today. The greatest good that has happened to the country today is the ouster of Jonathan through popular votes, the same way he came to power in 2011. He was lucky to have conceded defeat early enough as that action seems the only good he will be taking with him by May 29. He’s destroyed the country and is handing over its tatars. He’s decimated its politics and is handing over a badly and sharply divided people. He’s battered the economy and all is left for the incoming government of Muhammadu Buhari is an economic carcass with no employment, no cash flow and signs of a budding change. The lesson in this horrifying experience is instructive, especially on the eve of Buhari’s assumption of office. At least, the message in it for the president-elect is clear and it is that the energy sector is very critical and must be uppermost on his agenda. If on the basis of a few days’ strike in the energy sector, the entire economy was almost coming to a halt, then Buhari must know that the moment he is able to fix the energy crisis, every other thing will fall in place. Despite all, Nigerians still have to thank President Jonathan for accepting defeat and not allowing the country slip into the Burundian canal. Although the time to write about his days in office has not come, definitely, history already has him documented for posterity and at the appointed time, it shall be released for public consumption, what shall be known as the years of the locust in the nation’s body polity. Thank you, Goodluck Jonathan! https://cdn.akamai.thisdaylive.com/0bef99d6-acf5-4e2c-9779-8fa02ba3fcd4/assets/_Goodluck-Jonathan-new-0526.jpg?maxwidth=400&maxheight=540 https://i57.tinypic.com/2nv6kon.jpg |

We hope he at least quenched his thirst, because this Chinese soccer goalie is in hot water for allowing the opposing team to score a goal while he took a water break. Sui Weijie of Chinese Super League team Chongqing Lifan let Ding Haifeng of rival Liaoning kick the ball into the net after a hastily set-up free kick, the Telegraph reported. Even as the ball went in, Weijie could be seen leisurely gulping down water. "I made a terrible mistake," he said, according to news outlets. He was fined 50,000 yuan (about $8,000) for his brain freeze and the team has considered cutting him, the paper noted.
