FOUNDER of Igbo Youth Movement ,IYM, Mr. Elliot Uko, has dismissed reports that President Goodluck Jonathan deceived the South-East geo-political zone on the construction of the proposed Second Niger Bridge, noting that the President was fair in his dealings with Ndigbo. Uko also frowned on what he described as the constant demonization of Jonathan and his wife, describing it as unfair. Uko in a statement said those behind claims that the President failed the Igbo were political jobbers, seeking attention from the President-elect, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) His words: ‘’Ndigbo are proud, courageous people whose world view is built on truth and justice. Whereas political hustlers and job seekers have the inalienable right to lobby General Buhari for accommodation in the APC groovy train, such lobbyists certainly do not have the right to tell white lies, especially when they claim to be speaking on behalf of Ndigbo. ‘’No government in Nigeria since 1960 has treated Ndigbo justly or better than the outgoing Jonathan administration. Therefore, people who use the very strong and negative word ‘deception’ in describing President Jonathan’s relationship with Ndigbo as concerning the 2nd Niger Bridge, simple went too far. ‘’The fad of demonizing Jonathan and his wife, especially in the social media, is unjust and uncalled for. “Ninety-nine per cent of Ndigbo hold that President Jonathan remains the first and only Nigerian leader to give them a sense of belonging since 1966. They also know that he was equally fair to all sections of the country during his five year stewardship. “Denouncing him so soon is unkind, and un-Igbo. It is not in our character to show such vile ingratitude to the man who truly tried his best in service of his father land.’’ http://.com/discussion/1939/jonathan-was-fair-to-ndigbo-says-igbo-group/p1 |

The Lagos State Chapter of the PDP on Monday described as null and void, the purported removal of its State Chairman, Chief Tunji Shelle. NAN reports that a group in the party, under the aegis of Executive Committee of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State, on Monday, announced the removal of Shelle as the Party’s State Chairman. It also announced the appointment of Mr Owolabi Olorunoje as Acting Chairman, saying their decision was reached after a disciplinary committee was set up to investigate some allegations levelled against Shelle. However, in a statement signed by its State Publicity Secretary, Mr Taofik Gani, the PDP called on party members to discountenance the said sack. It also admonished those behind the “preposterous action” to retrace their steps and allow peace to reign in the party. “The State Chairman leading the present state Executive has delivered the best unprecedented electoral result to the party members. “It is therefore very irrational for anyone or persons in the party to try to create acrimony by claiming that the State Chairman has not performed to warrant continuing in office” it stated. The statement also faulted the modus operandi employed by “the detractors”, which it said contravened the provisions of the party’s constitution on the sack of a state chairman. “The State Chairman is a member of National Executive Committee (NEC) and can only be removed or suspended by the consent of the NEC. “There is no NEC approval to the action. It thus stands, null and void. For the sake of clarity, Shelle remains the legitimate chairman of PDP in the state. “All dealings with the party in the state should be through him”. It added. http://.com/discussion/1890/lagos-pdp-reverse-chairman-s-sack/p1 |

RIP TO A GREAT SON OF A GREAT MAN |
EVER since a Liberian woman was diagnosed with Ebola after having sex with her spouse who is a survivor of Ebola, doctors can no longer tell for certain when it’s safe for Ebola survivors to return to a normal sex life. According to a report in Popular Science, It used to be the belief that the Ebola virus could live on in a man’s semen for up to 82 days, but there wasn’t any evidence of the virus within the man’s blood, yet tests revealed that his semen contained genetic material of the Ebola virus, closely matching the strain that infected the woman. Previously the World Health Organisation had advised Ebola survivors to abstain from sex or use a condom for up to three months after getting sick. But latest findings show that Ebola can be spread up to five months later, doctors no longer know when it’s safe for Ebola survivors to return to a normal sex life. So how is it possible for Ebola to live longer in the testes than in other parts of the body? It likely has something to do with the body’s “immune privileged” areas, the report noted. A person’s brain, eyes, and gonads are so important to survival and reproduction that they’re actually shielded from the body’s own immune system. That’s because the same molecules that can fight off foreign invaders can also damage nerves and other cells. And it doesn’t help that the immune system doesn’t play nicely with sperm. White blood cells see the little spermatozoa as invaders–probably because males don’t start producing semen until after the body’s immune system has already been established. The testes are protected from the immune system by a wall of cells. This blood-testis barrier surrounds the tubes where sperm are made, making sure immune cells can’t move from the blood into the tubes. Should the barrier be breached, the testes are armed with immunosuppressive molecules that would cripple any invading immune cells. While the testes do have a resident population of macrophages and T-lymphocytes (both cells that fight infection), their ability to kill intruders is also suppressed to protect the developing sperm. Suppressing the immune system may be good for sperm, but unfortunately it’s also good for pathogens. Once a virus infiltrates an immunologically “privileged” area like the testes, it can be hard to get rid of. This is one of the factors that makes HIV so difficult to treat. http://.com/discussion/1841/scientists-investigate-why-the-ebola-virus-hides-in-the-testicles/p1 |

At least, 10,606 Lagosians have tested positive for the dreaded HIV disease in public hospitals and facilities in Lagos State in the last one year, says the State Government. Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris disclosed this on Tuesday at a ministerial press conference in Alausa, Lagos, southwest Nigeria. The commissioner disclosed that out of the 58,792 people counselled and tested for HIV, 10,606 of them were found to be positive, which represented 18 percent of the total figure. He also said the government conducted the fourth phase of sensitisation of Traditional Birth Attendant, TBA, on Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV, PMTCT, Universal Safety Precaution, USP, and Referral Linkage to PMTCT intervention. According to him, 28,736 pregnant women were counselled and tested during the outreach, out of which 340 were positive and referred to PMTCT services, adding that 2,957 HIV positive clients commenced anti-retroviral treatment in the last one year. He disclosed that 1,066 HIV positive pregnant women and 745 HIV exposed babies were placed on antiretroviral vaccine prophylaxis. Idris further disclosed that the taskforce on fake drugs shut 194 pharmacies and drug stores in the last one year for selling fake drugs without getting the needed approval from the state government. He added that the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency, HEFAMAA renewed the registration of 1,125 private health facilities in the last one year and monitored 781 health facilities, with 70 of the facilities found wanting and served closure notice, while seven facilities were shutdown during the period. The commissioner further disclosed that of the 42,908 people screened for diabetes and hypertension, 6,842 of them were hypertensive while 1,382 were diabetic. Idris asserted that the objective of the state government’s large scale infrastructural development in the health sector was based on the need to enhance the efficiency of the health workforce as well as increasing the scope and quality of service delivery in the health facilities. He noted that the state had continued to invest in delivering high quality human and environmentally friendly infrastructure in the Health sector relevant to the Millennium Development Goals, adding that infrastructure development involved the revamping of health and related structures through phased rehabilitation, equipping and upgrading of existing health facilities and the construction of new ones at all levels of care. The Commissioner, who posited that the level of infrastructural upgrade would hopefully continue to attract Nigerian health professionals in Diaspora, listed project embarked on and completed in the last one year to include Cardiac and Renal Centre at Gbagada General Hospital; Construction of Mortuary at Badagry General Hospital; renovation, extension and equipping of mortuary at General Hospitals in Epe and Ikorodu; and renovation and upgrading of Epe Comprehensive PHC Flagship Centre. “Some projects were awarded during the period under review and the implementation of ongoing projects was adequately supervised with appropriate inter-ministerial collaboration to ensure quality and timely delivery. “These projects include renovation, extension and equipping of Old Ayinke House which is at 75% completion stage; construction of a new Critical Care Unit at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) which is at 85% completion stage and construction of a four-storey Basic Medical Sciences office block at Lagos State College of Medicine (LASUCOM) which is at 65% completion stage,” he said. http://.com/discussion/822/10-606-lagosians-tested-hiv-positive/p1 |
The National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party have one request for their fellow party members and Nigerians- Stop! blaming us for the defeat of President Goodluck Jonathan in the presidential election. In a statement released by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Olisa Metuh, the NWC attempted to absolve themselves of blame in the failure of PDP in the last general election. Here are 7 quotes from their effort: 1. “We (NWC) did not lead the party to failure. We were not involved in the campaigns and our advice was ignored. If we had handled the campaign, Mr. President would have won the election. We cannot be held responsible when our advice was ignored. 2. “I can tell you from my own records that we generated billions. I think we generated more than N7bn, N8bn or N9bn. We generated more than N7bn and we generated a lot of money. The first initial donation we made was half a billion (N500m) to the Presidential campaign funds even though we were not involved in raising funds for the presidential campaign. 3. “They(Presidential campaign organisation) generated campaign funds up to N21bn. The party was not involved in it and the party cannot account for it because we were not involved in that money. It was a Jerry Gana Committee and they handled it and nobody can question us for that. 4. “There is no governorship candidate that received less than N100m from this Working Committee; and the House of Assembly candidates across the country got money from us. It depends on the state. These monies were given to some ministers and some people to distribute to the states. In some states it was the campaign coordinators that we gave, in some states, we gave to the governors or directly to the candidates of the party.” 5. “For those of us in the North, where the type of campaign that we generated made it impossible for our leaders in the North to garner support for our candidates because of the hate campaign that was generated, we are not answerable for it. While I am not holding any excuse for them, we cannot be held accountable for issues that were generated that worked against our candidate in the North. This is clear, all Nigerians knew what happened.” 6. “We state clearly that we have not been given any money; rather this NWC generated billions of naira from the sale of forms from where we funded our candidates for the governorship and state assembly elections in all the states of the federation in addition to funds released to key leaders, including NWC and BoT members, to prosecute the campaigns in their various areas. 7. “The NWC is willing and ready to make this account public in line with the Freedom of Information law. When this wicked and baseless allegation was debunked by the NWC, which publicly clarified that it was not involved in the handling of the campaign and its funding, and that such were exclusively managed by the Presidential Campaign Organisation appointed by the President, these divisive elements in their desperation, came up with another allegation, claiming that the leadership embezzled funds belonging to the party.” http://.com/discussion/420/with-7-quotes-pdp-leaders-absolve-themselves-of-all-blames-in-pres-jonathan-s-fall/p1 |
Nigeria - More than 100 people, including a pastor and three soldiers, were killed by Fulani herdsmen who went on rampage after finding out that their cows have gone missing. Seventy of the deaths were recorded in Karim Lamido and Takum local government areas of Taraba State and 30 in two villages at the Barkin Ladi LGA of Plateau State. Suspected Fulani herdsmen invaded Vat and Zakupang , killing Pastor Luka Gwom of the Church of Christ in Nation and 29 others in the early hours of Monday. Spokesman for the Special Task Force, Ikedichi Iweha, said the herdsmen took the action following the theft of about 400 of their cows. More than 300 of the stolen cows, according to him, were later found and returned to their owners. He explained that the cows were stolen in Jos East and taken to Barakin Ladi, a development that made the herdsmen to launch the attacks. http://.com/discussion/377/fulani-herdsmen-slaughter-over-100-in-taraba-and-plateau-over-missing-cows/p1 |

Young Nigeria's are not happy that Obiageli Ezekwesili, co-founder of the #BringBackOurGirls campaign has refused to call her former boss, Olusegun Obasanjo 'corrupt'. During an outing on Aljazeera's Head to Head Ezekwesili, popularly know as 'Madam Due process' had tried to dodge questions on Obasanjo and corruption. While she responded very intelligently throughout the interview she however became evasive when she asked if the administration of her former boss, Olusegun Obasanjo was as corrupt as what many have described it to be. ''I really like empirical evidence..and right now you don't have any. You just assumed", Ezekwesili told the reporter. 'Empirical evidence' is currently trending on Twitter as young Nigerians poke at Ezekwesili.
