Seyi Olaoluwa, a daughter of Dr. Femi Omisore, one of the several persons kidnapped in Ekiti State, has debunked the story of the Police, regarding the release of the kidnap victims on Saturday. Olaoluwa specifically accused the Police, which claimed to have rescued the 10 victims freed on Saturday morning, of lying. Omisore, a lecturer in Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, was kidnapped penultimate Saturday on his way to Oye Ekiti, for a funeral ceremony. His driver was killed by the abductors while the hoodlums shot at the fuel tank of the car until the car went up in flames. A version of the release of the kidnappers have said the Vigilance group in Esure Ekiti rescued the victims while the police, through their Force Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Ojukwu, claimed to have rescued the victims while an unspecified number of the kidnappers were arrested. Olaoluwa, who spoke to our correspondent on the telephone on Saturday, denied that the victims, including his father, were released by the kidnappers after the relations of all the victims had paid the specified amount of ransom charged by the kidnappers. She said, “It’s a lie. They were not rescued by anybody. The vigilantes did not rescue them; we paid ransom. Everybody paid ransom before they were released. “We paid ransom on Wednesday. My bother was the one that took the ransom to Benin Road. The people said we should come to Akure. When they got Akure, they asked them to come towards Benin Road. They used the phone to trail them until they got to somewhere nearly Benin. “They directed them towards a forest before Benin, where they showed them the money some of the victims’ relations had paid. They were so confident that they said every body must pay before the victims would be released. We paid our own on Wednesday. “So, I believe that it was when all the relations of the victims had paid that they decided to release them. For the police to claim to have released them is not true.” Olaoluwa did not however specify how much was paid for Omisore’s release. http://.com/discussion/7883/police-lied-we-paid-ransom-to-kidnappers-omisore-s-daughter/p1 |

https://cdn.pmnewsnigeria.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/Ireland-Gay.jpg Ireland appeared to have voted to allow gay marriage Saturday in a historic referendum which would see the largely Catholic country become the world’s first to make the change after a popular vote. As the count took place, a leading “No” campaigner conceded defeat while two government ministers said they were confident of victory for the “Yes” side, which has been boosted by thousands of young Irish returning home from abroad to vote. No official results have yet been announced and the final results are expected sometime after 3:00 pm (1400 GMT) but some “Yes” campaigners were already toasting victory. Outside the main counting centre in Dublin, Grainne O’Grady, 44, and Pauline Tracey, 53, said the plan was to “celebrate, celebrate, celebrate.” “I’m just so happy I could burst. We were voting on whether we were equal in our own country,” said O’Grady, wearing a “Yes Equality” T-shirt. “It makes me so proud,” Tracey added. “It’s just been so emotional for everybody.” Legalising gay marriage would be a seismic change in the traditionally Catholic republic, where homosexuality was illegal until 1993 and abortion remains prohibited except where the mother’s life is in danger. One of the most prominent campaigners against gay marriage, David Quinn, said early tallies indicated that those in favour of gay marriage had secured a victory “roughly in the region of two to one”. Quinn, director of the Iona Institute, added on national broadcaster RTE that it was it was “obviously a very impressive victory for the ‘Yes’ side”. Meanwhile the junior government minister with responsibility for equality, Aodhan O Riordain wrote on Twitter: “Key boxes opened. It’s a yes. And a landslide across Dublin”. Another junior minister, Kevin Humphreys, said he was “happy to predict… an overwhelmingly ‘Yes’ victory.” – Irish celebrities back ‘Yes’ – The referendum has pitched traditionalists including the Catholic Church against those in favour of gay marriage, including Ireland’s prime minister Enda Kenny, a Catholic who told voters there was “nothing to fear” in a televised message on Wednesday night. A string of Irish celebrities have also backed the “Yes” campaign including singers Bono and Sinead O’Connor plus actor Colin Farrell. All Ireland’s main political parties supported amending the constitutional definition of marriage. Gerry Adams, president of the socialist Sinn Fein opposition party, said Friday’s referendum brought the issues of “inclusion and equality to the fore”. The Catholic Church campaigned strongly for a “No” vote, insisting marriage can only involve a man and woman, drawing support from many older and rural voters. The majority of Irish people identify themselves as Catholic, but the Church’s influence has waned amid growing secularisation and after a wave of child sex abuse scandals that badly discredited the hierarchy. Around 3.2 million people were eligible to vote in Friday’s referendum, and reports suggest there was a higher-than-expected turnout. RTE said large numbers of young voters took part, with queues stretching outside some polling stations during the early morning and late evening peaks. The issue drew intense interest on social media under the hashtag #MarRef, with some young Irish voters posting selfies of themselves returning from jobs in Britain and elsewhere to vote in favour of gay marriage. – ‘Hugely important day’ – In a rare move, the government opened up the grounds of Dublin Castle — the historic, ceremonial former centre of British power in Ireland — to the public so they could hear the official result announcement. As the ballots were being counted, around 100 people gathered there, some with rainbow flags wrapped around their shoulders. Niamh Fitzgerald, wearing a rainbow necklace, had flown home from Birmingham in central England for the referendum. “This is only the beginning of a much bigger thing. Everybody has a right to a religion but no one religion has the right to dictate to a country what our rights should be,” said the 29-year-old. “It’s probably going to be the first election where the Catholic Church’s power is waning. It is showing a real shift.” Voters in Friday’s referendum were asked whether or not to add an article to the Irish constitution saying: “Marriage may be contracted in accordance with law by two persons without distinction as to their sex.” If the move is approved, Ireland would be the 19th country in the world to legalise gay marriage, and the 14th in Europe. Across the border in Northern Ireland, gay marriage is banned even though it is legal in the rest of the United Kingdom. http://.com/discussion/7700/ireland-expected-to-allow-gay-marriage-after-historic-vote/p1 |

According to Vanguard, the governors are displeased with Akpabio for attending a meeting presided over by the chairman of the NGF and governor of Rivers state, Rotimi Amaechi, without notifying them. At the said meeting, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governors called on the minister of finance Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, to account for the alleged $20 billion excess crude money, and this has not gone down well with the PDP governors. They have faulted Akpabio for his failure to call for a meeting of the PDP governors prior to the NGF meeting which was held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja. In a bid to force him to resign, the governors on Friday, May 23, reportedly visited the presidential villa to report Akpabio to President Goodluck Jonathan. The call for Akpabio’s resignation follows the deepening crisis in the party which has consumed the national chairman of the party, Adamu Mu’azu, as well as the chairman of the Board of Trustees, Chief Tony Anenih. Governor Olusegun Mimiko has been tipped by the governors to take over from Akpabio. http://.com/discussion/7610/pdp-governors-want-akpabio-out/p1 |

https://newngrguardiannewscom.c.presscdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/BokoHaram-GUNS.jpg Boko Haram A journalist and rights activist known for his outspoken criticism of the humanitarian crisis in southeastern Niger has been arrested for “collaborating” with Boko Haram Islamists, the interior minister said Wednesday. Human rights watchdog Amnesty International condemned Moussa Tchangari’s arrest and called on Niger to release him. “This man has been collaborating with Boko Haram for some time, and he is actively spreading propaganda and false news in liaison with Boko Haram,” Interior Minister Hassoumi Massaoudou told AFP. “All his propaganda aims to show… that Niger’s defence and security forces are the criminals… (and) not Boko Haram.” Niger cannot “tolerate such an active collaboration with terrorists”, or such “systematic spreading of false news”, he added. Tchangari was arrested on Monday and charged with “criminal links to the terrorist group Boko Haram”, he said. Tchangari’s organisation Alternative Espace Citoyen has been critical of the humanitarian crisis in southeastern Niger, where the army is fighting Boko Haram. In early May, his group published a report that criticised the Niger authorities after the evacuation of some 25,000 Lake Chad residents over fears of new Islamist attacks, following a deadly assault in late April. At the time, Tchangari said thousands of men, women, children and elderly Lake Chad residents “walked for more than 50 kilometres (30 miles)” until they reached safety. “No preparations were in place to welcome… or support them,” he added. In early May, a UN source said the evacuees were living in “dramatic” conditions — without tents or shelter, and in some cases without access to drinking water. In a statement Tuesday, Amnesty International called on Niger to free Tchangari “immediately”, saying: “The fight against Boko Haram must not serve as a pretext to violate free speech.” The call for Lake Chad residents to evacuate came a week after a cross-border assault by Nigerian-based Boko Haram insurgents on the island of Karamga that left at least 74 people dead. It was Niger’s heaviest loss since it joined a regional offensive against the militants, whose six-year insurgency has claimed some 13,000 lives and displaced about 1.5 million people http://.com/discussion/5738/niger-journalist-arrested-for-collaborating-with-boko-haram-the-guardian-nigeria/p1 |

The trial judge adjourned the matter to conduct trial-within-trial after the accused’s lawyers objected to the admissibility of alleged confessional statements of the accused persons Justice Mohammed adjourned till June 2nd and 3rd, 2015 to commence the trial-with-in trial in the matter to ascertain the voluntariness of the confessional statements of the accused persons. The accused persons, Aminu Sadiq Ogwuche, Ahmed Abubakar, Mohammed Ishaq, Ya’u Saidu (alias Kofar Rama); Anas Isa, Adamu Yusuf and Nasir Abubakar, are facing terrorism-related charges. At the resumed hearing of the matter on Wedenesday, the prosecution counsel, Mohammed Diri, sought to tender the statements of the accused persons through the first prosecution witness, but the accused persons' counsel led by Ahmed Raji, SAN, objected. Raji, in his submission, told the court that the first accused person, Aminu Sadiq Ogwuche, was beaten and severely tortured before his statement was obtained. In the circumstance, he argued that the statement was not voluntarily given and hence, should not be admitted as evidence by the court. In the same vein, counsel to the second accused person, Abdul Mohammed, urged the court not to admit the statement of his client as it was obtained under severe torture. Mohammed then prayed the court to conduct trial-with-in trial to ascertain the voluntariness or otherwise of the statements before the prosecution was allow to tender them. Counsel to the rest accused persons aligned themselves with the submissions of Raji and Abdul Mohammed and prayed the court to order trial with-in-trial in the matter. Responding, the prosecution counsel, Diri, urged the judge to discountenance the submissions of the defence counsel, adding that the statements of all the accused persons were voluntarily obtained, contrary to their submissions. It will be recalled that the Federal Government on Tuesday said it would tender 37 documentary evidence and call five witnesses in the trial of the Nyanya bomb blasts suspects. The first prosecution witness, an investigator with the Department of State Security (DSS) had already told the court that he knew Ogwuche in 2011 when he was deported from the United Kingdom (UK) for belonging to a terrorism group there. He also told the court how he obtained the statements of all the accused persons at various time, adding also that the accused persons gave their statements voluntarily. http://.com/discussion/5793/nyanya-bomb-blasts-judge-to-determine-if-accused-made-statements-under-duress/p1 |

Ghana's main opposition party, the New Patriotic Party, NPP, is drawing inspiration from Nigeria’s incoming President Muhammadu Buhari in a bid to wrest power from the ruling party and unseat a leader in office, Mail& Guardian reports. Buhari had won the presidential election in Africa’s biggest economy with 52.4% of the votes cast, defeating President Goodluck Jonathan and his People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the first lawful transition of power since British colonial rule ended in 1960. buhari “The Nigerian election is an inspiration for us,” Mahamudu Bawumia, vice presidential candidate for the NPP said in an interview on May 15. “We have to learn from a party that can take out the incumbent.” The NPP will focus its campaign for next year’s election on the economy’s poor performance under President John Dramani Mahama, said Bawumia, 51. The youth of the Peoples Democratic Party will be embarking on a fasting and praying spree for defeated governorship aspirant in the state, Jimi Agbaje. Why? So that the governorship petition of the party will be favourably considered by the Election Petitions Tribunal. The Publicity Secretary of the group, Abiodun Abari, addressed journalists on Monday, stating that through fasting and praying, Agbaje’s stolen mandate would be retrieved. “We urge our teeming youths to remain calm and focused in retrieving our mandate despite the confusion which we see as the agenda of the opposition. For our candidates to have put up such a performance in the face of institutionalised collusion between the Independent National Electoral Commission and the opposition to rig in favour of the latter is heroic and unprecedented. “The silence resulting from the sham elections conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission in Lagos is palpable. Hence, we urge all party supporters to support the party’s cause at the tribunals by providing documents, evidence, and of course through prayer and fasting so that we can retrieve our various stolen mandate.” http://.com/discussion/5211/no-jokes-pdp-youth-in-lagos-will-be-praying-and-fasting-for-agbaje/p1 |
