Embattled former militant leader, Chief
Government Ekpemupolo (Tompolo) has called
on the leaders of the Niger Delta Avengers
(NDA) to call off the group’s campaign and
sign on to federal government’s dialogue
option.
Tompolo, who was recently speculated to
have escaped to Libya, in an open letter also
expressed the belief that the federal
government was serious about ending the oil-
rich region’s intermittent armed struggling.
Tompolo also reiterated his earlier claim of
not being involved in the formation or
operations of the dreaded militant group, the
Avengers, adding that the group’s activities
had only given vent to rumour peddling from
those intent on implicating and profiteering
from the Niger Delta crisis.
He, however, advised those operating the
militant group to call it off, take advantage of
government’s call for dialogue as their
activities were rubbing off negatively on the
Niger Delta region and its peoples.
“I wish to once again write the members of
the Niger Delta Avengers to embrace the
Federal Government dialogue option as a way
out of the brewing crisis in the Niger Delta
region. As I have said before now, I do not
know you and how to reach you except
through the mass media, therefore it is high
time you stopped the bombing and destruction
of crude oil facilities in the Niger Delta region.
“One thing you guys may not be aware of is
that, you have not only succeeded in
militarizing the Niger Delta region now, but
also succeeded in given birth to so many
negotiators and political jobbers within the
government circle, who are very serious
rumour peddlers in the country now.
“I wish to reiterate that you guys must stop
the bombing and destruction of oil facilities in
the Niger Delta region now and embrace the
dialogue option from the Federal Government
as it is (dialogue) the only pragmatic means
in resolving a crisis no matter huge and
complicated such crisis is.
“I believe fervently that the Government is
serious and willing to end this re-occurring
crisis in the Niger Delta region. Enough is
enough”, Tompolo said.
He expressed displeasure at the manner in
which the military personnel who carried out
the recent operations in some Gbaramatu
communities allegedly violated the
communities, especially his Oporoza home
community, and dislocated the people’s
everyday life.
“As for the people of Gbaramatu kingdom,
they have not known peace since you guys
started the bombing of oil facilities as they
have been harassed, intimidated, violated and
invaded on daily bases by the Nigerian Military
under the guise of looking for members of
your group (Niger Delta Avengers) and my
humble self, who they have criminally and
wickedly linked to the Niger Delta Avengers.
“Presently all communities in Gbaramatu
kingdom have been disserted by residents for
fear of a repeat of the 2009 military invasion,
which still leave the communities in shambles.
Even till now, the military has not returned the
symbol of authority they took away from the
Egbesu Shrine and other valuables in Oporoza
community during the May 28, 2016 invasion.
“It is pertinent to state that I have not heard
and seen in any part of Nigeria, even the most
volatile North Eastern part of Nigeria, where
Boko Haram has been killing innocent people,
the way and manner the Military desecrated
the traditional worship centres in Gbaramatu
Kingdom. This is a clear oppression and
intimidation of the peace loving people of
Gbaramatu Kingdom”, he said. www.thenationonlineng.net |

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo on Thursday said the right to life as provided in the nation’s constitution will be meaningless if a large number of Nigerians are poor. According to him, that is the reason why the present administration is committed to investing significantly in getting people out of poverty and address issues relating to children and other vulnerable groups. This, he said, informed the decision of the Federal Government to earmark N500bn in the 2016 Budget for the Social Investment Programmes. A statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande, said the Vice-President spoke at the inauguration of the strategic implementation plan of the National Home- grown School Feeding Programme, one of the five social investment schemes of the Presidency. “It is a victory for a point of view namely that the inalienable right to life confirmed in the Nigerian Constitution is meaningless in a society where large numbers are poor, if government does not invest significantly in getting people out of poverty and address the health and education issues of children and other vulnerable groups,” the Vice-President said. He said the strategic plan sets out the partnership arrangement on how federal, state, and local governments were to synergise towards achieving the primary objectives of the School Feeding Programme. He noted that the plan would only work with the cooperation of Federal, State and Local tiers of governments. Osinbajo also emphasised the need for the buy-in of the people, saying, “it is called ‘Home Grown School Feeding’ for the reason that it must be owned by the people for whom it has been designed.” Osinbajo said the programme was not just a social welfare scheme which gives handouts to the poor, but “a direct economic benefit to the target groups and the economy as a whole.” He said the scheme would bring real change to the lives of over 20 million children nationwide. The Vice-President the four major benefits of the programme to include to improve school enrollment and completion and cut current dropout rate estimated at 30 per cent while reducing child labour; improve child nutrition and health; increase local agricultural production; and to create jobs which would invariably lift families over the poverty line into a bright future. www.punchng.com/right-life-meaningless-poverty-says-osinbajo/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |

What a wonderful write up, more of dis is needed to keep them awake since we av no opposition right now. My best part. "We pine for holiness; we want the sort of character that John Milton painted of the Christ in Paradise Lost. But Christ can be boring if he does not change water to wine or give us fishes that defeat the appetite. The alternative is to call for Satan, and the sins multiply. Hence, Satan was a more colorful and majestic character in Milton’s epic than the beautiful blandness of his Christ". |

EFCC detains two ex-ministers over N900m
poll cash
Former Chief of Air Staff Mohammed Umar is
proposing an out-of-court settlement in his
N7.3billion money laundering case before the
Federal High Court, Abuja.
Umar is the predecessor of Alex Badeh, who
is also standing trial before the Federal High
Court, Abuja in a similar case.
He was arraigned on May 11 before Justice
Binta Nyako on a seven-count charge
bordering on money laundering, criminal
breach of trust and corruption involving about
N7.382billion.
It alleged that Umar removed the money from
the account of the Nigerian Air Force while he
was the Chief of Air Staff.
The EFCC alleged that Umar spent part of the
money to acquire the property at Plot No.
1853, Deng Xiano Ping Street, off Mahathir
Mohammed Street, Asokoro Extension, Abuja
He was accused of spending part of the
money on residential assets, including a three-
bedroom duplex, with a boys’ quarters at Road
3B, Street 2, Mabushi Ministers Hill, Abuja.
He also allegedly used part of the money to
acquire property at 14 Audu Bako Way, GRA,
Kano and a three-bedroom duplex with three-
room boys’ quarters at No. 8 Kabala Road,
Unguwan Rimi, GRA, Kaduna.
Umar was said to have used part of the
money for the renovation/improvement of
House No.1853 Deng Xiao Ping Street, Off
Mahathir Mohammed Street, Asokoro
Extension, Abuja.
The offences are said to be contrary to
Section 15(2)(d) of the Money Laundering
Prohibition Act 2011 and punishable under
Section 15(3) of the same Act.
Umar pleaded not guilty to the charge,
following which the judge adjourned to June 7
for commencement of trial.
Yesterday, his lawyer, Hassan Liman (SAN)
informed the court that his client had started
negotiations with the complainant, the
Economic and Financial Commission (EFCC),
for the possibility of an out-of-court
settlement of the case.
Liman disclosed that Umar had held meetings
with officials of the EFCC during which
discussions were held on the proposal.
He said Umar attended the meetings with his
lawyers. He said the meetings were between
Umar’s laywers and the head of Legal
Department of the anti-graft agency, head of
the task force of the commission, Mr. Ibrahim
Musa, and the prosecuting lawyer, Sylvanus
Tahir.
Liman said after the first meeting held on May
31 and the subsequent one on June 3, it was
resolved that the defendant should send a
formal letter detailing his proposal to the
commission.
Liman added that following the resolution, the
defence had already written to the Chairman
of the EFCC, Mr Ibrahim Magu.
He said the letter was dated June 6, 2016.
Tahir, who confirmed that settement talks
were on-going , said of a letter from Umar to
the EFCC Chairman, proposing settlement.
Both Liman and Tahir were, however, silent on
the details of the negotiation. They said
details would be made public at the
appropriate time.
Tahir said: “I also confirm that there were
meetings between the defendant and the
commission where I was also in attendance.”
He insisted that the ongoing discussion should
not stop the court from proceedings with the
trial. He said his witnesses were ready.
Tahir argued that since the case was not
civil, but criminal in nature, the ongoing
settlement talks could not constitute sufficient
grounds to prevent the court from proceeding
with the trial.
Replying, Liman said with the ongoing efforts
by his client to settle, it would be prejudicial
to begin the trial.
He urged the court to adjourn the case for the
defendant to conclude the settlement.
Ruling, Justice Nyako said the trial would be
shifted to a later date not because of the
information about settlement, but because the
defence was yet to file its summary of
defence as directed by the court on the last
date.
She then adjourned till June 16 for the
prosecution to call its witnesses. thenationonlineng.net/ex-air-chief-seeks-deal-alleged-n7-8b-laundering/ |
