The Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of
Nigeria in charge of Financial System
Surveillance (FSS), Mr. Okechukwu Joseph
Nnanna, on Tuesday said the apex bank may
blacklist banks used for money laundering.
He also said management and directors of
such banks will be in trouble.
The CBN official also said he cannot say
exactly how much of looted funds had been
recovered and deposited in CBN.
Nnanna, who spoke with journalists in Abuja
on the sideline of a workshop organised by
the Inter-Governmental Action Group Against
Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA),
said it will no longer be business as usual.
He said: Any bank which we discover has
been used, or manipulated by criminals who
launder money, corrupt politicians who
launder money, that bank and directors would
be held accountable.
“Not only paying fines, we can also ask them
to be blacklisted and will never work in the
financial system any more. That is a very
severe punishment.
“People who finance terrorists come in
different guises, they may be genuine
businessmen who after a while may turn to
be criminals but what is important is for the
banks to make sure that the customer who
comes to deposit money and withdraw
money, they must know who he is. Not only
knowing who he is, they must know his or her
business.”
Asked what CBN is doing to check money
laundering, the deputy governor said the apex
bank has put in place many control
mechanisms.
He added: “At the CBN, we are doing a great
deal. The bank has in fact put in place a
regime of controls particularly for commercial
banks. Know Your Customers (KYC) is a very
serious affair with us.
“You don’t go to the bank and open an
account and go and lodge in N5 million, N10
million without you being reported to the NFIU
and to the EFCC. You will be reported to
explain the source of that money.
“We are not saying that Nigerians are all
criminals. If you are a genuine businessman
and you lodge in N1 billion there is nothing
wrong with that but if you have N5,000 and
all of a sudden, you brought N10 million, we
would like to know.
“The CBN in collaboration with the National
Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) would like
to know the source of that money and that
we are doing very religiously.” |

Soon after the bus conveying the dignitaries
arrived Asiwaju’s residence, I saw Senator
Oluremi Tinubu rushing out of the bus,
walking fast almost with so much focus, it
was clear she had something in mind. She
walked ahead of her husband and all the
Governors. She was wearing a light blue
wrapper with pictures of the late H.I.D
Awolowo which was worn by majority of
sympathizers at the funeral. It was
‘Ashiobi’ (ceremonial uniform, usually for one
occasion). Asiwaju followed up and stepped
into the house alongside the six Governors.
While the Governors went into an inner parlor
beyond the main and bigger living room, I saw
Mrs Oluremi Tinubu went straight to the
dining area located by the left side on
entering the main living room. Without even
changing into normal dress, away from the
‘Ashiobi’, the first thing she did was to start
cleaning dishes, I watched her cleaned over
ten dishes without any ‘ajebota-like-attitude’.
Then, she started rearranging food items set
by aides on the dining table. I took
exceptional notice of how she was working
with house helps, I saw so much willingness,
freedom and excitement on the faces of
those helps. I noticed that whenever she
wanted to ask them to do anything at all, she
would start by saying, ‘jowo’ – the Yoruba
way of saying ‘please’ and after they did
anything she asked them to do, she
repeatedly and naturally said, ‘O se’ meaning
‘thank you’. She effectively combined
humility, politeness and efficiency in
managing her home. In less than five minutes
of her arrival, Oluremi had set the table. One
Governor I wouldn’t mention, sneaked onto
the dining table very quickly. Asiwaju sighted
him and jokingly said, “Your Excellencies, one
Governor is cheating all of us on the dining
table”. The Governors happily and I say, so
freely, walked to the dining area onto the
waiting cheerfulness of Mrs Tinubu who
practically left no one in doubt that she was
very excited to serve. She coordinated the
lunch with so much passion like you would
think of a typical and very dedicated and
polite Nigerian woman that manages her own
restaurant and doing everything to satisfy
customers.
My initial thought was that Mrs Tinubu was
being dutiful to her husband’s special guests
but then I saw her carry about four used
glasses. Do you know who used those glasses
she picked? She actually picked them from
the visitors’ waiting parlour which was by the
right after a security scanner and those
glasses were used by security aides to
Governors. She insisted on picking the
glasses even when the security aides were
hesitant. Importantly, one could see that she
was not faking her actions, she was
unconsciously being herself.
For almost two hours, Mrs Oluremi Tinubu
walked around doing things herself and
cheerfully directing her aides to meet the
needs of guests. Oluremi was everywhere
including outside asking if food was served
drivers and police escorts.
I saw her around 2:55pm carrying a tray with
tea cups and saucers. She went into an
inner parlour with the tray. She must have
gone to serve the Governors and her
husband. I noticed also that she took special
interest in serving and interacting with a
Senator from Borno State who was there with
the Governor. Oluremi was obviously
passionate about her colleague in the Senate.
After she had served tea, I spotted her talking
to one of her house helps asking him to serve
everyone another round of drinks. As she
gave them tasks, I could see that the workers
were happy with her. Some of them were
even teasing her. She was behaving like a
mother in the midst of her loving adult
children on a happy day. The interaction
between Oluremi and her aides was
something so uniquely interesting. While still
admiring Oluremi’s hospitality that
Wednesday, a senior aide to Governor
Shettima told me about his previous
encounter with the former Lagos first lady
and wife to one of Nigeria’s most influential
politicians, on Saturday, February 8, 2014.
“If you remember, we came here with Oga
(Governor Shettima) in 2014, in the build up
to the 2015 elections when Asiwaju invited
Oga here for a meeting. We (aides to the
Governor) were sitted here at the parlor and
to our surprise, she (Oluremi Tinubu) came
and personally served each of us with
refreshments. We were shocked given the
fact that her husband was actually the bigger
boss as leader of the APC which is the party
of our boss who was going for second term
election. That day we came, her messengers
were playing with her and she was so free
with them. The woman is just down to earth,”
he said to me.
As I ran through the qualities in Mrs Oluremi
Tinubu, I concluded that Asiwaju’s great
sense of judgment transcends politics
because it takes so much wisdom for a man
not only to marry a good woman but for the
same man to be rich and powerful, yet have
his wife retain her humility and Africanness
even in the midst of wealth, power and
influence that is known to have ruined many. |
While in Lagos four days ago, I saw and
monitored something really strange in Senator
Oluremi Tinubu, wife of National Leader of
the All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju
Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
But before going into that Wednesday,
November 25, 2015 experience, let me share
that I hail from Zamfara State even though
passionately working in Borno State. I’m a
young journalist by education and profession,
have practiced in the north and the southern
parts of Nigeria for a major Newspaper. I’m
so proud of my profession. Given my kind of
job, I have met different categories of
persons from those at the bottom to those at
the top whether as news makers, news
sources, witnesses or for social and other
human interactions.
For the purpose of this small piece, I want to
make reference to my interactions with VIPs,
the ‘Ogas at the top’. Some times, VIPs or
important personalities as one may choose to
call them, invite journalists to their homes to
grant interviews or hold press briefings while
in not too often cases, the journalists
themselves request for interviews at homes
of VIPs or to source information that can
make or add up to major news items. These
mostly happen during weekends, outside
working hours or when VIPs want to avoid
office interferences.
Now, in the course of meeting these VIPs, I
had at different times come across their
wives too. One common feature in the wives
of many VIPs is their display of authority.
One minute contact with them tells you they
own the house because as they step out,
everyone around feels uneasy. Some, if not
many wives of VIPs represent fear and
danger. They are regarded as angels of death
by domestic helps i.e drivers, cooks,
gardeners, cleaners and aides to the boss
himself. Visitors tend to avoid wives of VIPs
except certain class of visitors that are very
well known to the VIPs’ wives. Many times,
wives of VIPs as I have seen them, are
emperors. They harass aides and house helps
with commands that are designed to make
aides develop running stomach. They are
feared so much that house helps celebrate
when they travel or stay out for long.
However, I have also come across some very
humble and hospitable wives of VIPs. One of
them is the wife of former Minister of Police
Affairs, Adamu Maina Waziri. That woman is
completely humble and kind from my point of
view. I met her three times: in 2006, 2007
and 2010. But three days ago, I saw
something entirely different in another VIP’s
wife.
On return to Lagos last Wednesday, after
traveling to Ikenne for the funeral of H.I.D
Awolowo earlier in the day, six Governors,
Kashim Shettima of Borno, Yari of Zamfara,
Tambuwal of Sokoto and their colleagues
from Jigawa, Kebbi and Cross River followed
national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola
Ahmed Tinubu to his residence at Bourdillon
road in Ikoyi. I was there as an aide to
Governor Shettima without knowing I would
be compelled to write this piece. |

There is disquiet in Ekiti State Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP) over its expelled
Secretary, Dr. Tope Aluko’s appearance
before the army panel probing soldiers’ roles
in the June 21, 2014 governorship poll.
Aluko is believed to have travelled to Kaduna,
venue of the sitting of the panel, led by Maj.-
Gen. Adeniyi Oyebade, armed with what a
source described as “very incontrovertible
and incriminating evidence”.
At Tuesday’s sitting, Aluko was said to have
chosen to testify in camera, following what
the source described as the “sensitivity” of
his evidence and the role his testimony could
play in the outcome of the panel’s report.
Some military officers were in Ekiti during the
election, including Capt Sagir Koli, who
secretly recorded the voices of senior army
officers and PDP chieftains perfecting
strategies to “rig” the election.
Personalities whose voices were recorded
included former Brigade Commander, Artillery
Regiment, Akure Brig.-Gen Aliyu Momoh;
Governor Ayo Fayose (the then PDP
governorship candidate), Musiliu Obanikoro
(then Minister of State for Defence), Iyiola
Omisore (then Osun PDP governorship
candidate) and Jelili Adesiyan (then Minister
of Police Affairs).
Aluko was expelled in July by a disciplinary
panel Fayose faction. His expulsion was
recently confirmed by the PDP national
leadership.
A party source told The Nation yesterday in
Ado-Ekiti that Aluko’s appearance has been
causing ripples and disquiet in the
government and party circles.
The source revealed that although the Ayo
Fayose-led administration and the Idowu
Faleye-led PDP exco know that Aluko is
aggrieved but they never expected him to
“testify against the party from which he had
benefited”.
The source said: “We are shocked to read in
the papers that Aluko went to testify against
our party and this has been causing anxiety in
government and party circles.
“If anyone says he is not moved by TKO’s
action, such a person is lying. This is because
TKO knows a lot about what transpired
before, during and after the election.
“He was privy to many meetings held on
strategies and logistics used to win the
election.
“Besides this, TKO has many documents
detailing liaison with the Jonathan
presidency, military and federal agencies, how
senior security chiefs were bribed to favour
Fayose.
“Things ought not to have degenerated if the
situation was well-managed.
“There are better ways that disagreement and
grievances could be resolved. But for a
senior party chief to testify against his party
shows that things have gone from bad to
worse.
“Although we are all waiting for the outcome
of the probe but we know that Aluko’s
evidence won’t bode well for the party.”
The Ekiti PDP has faulted the claim of the All
Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman
Olajide Awe that 36,000 soldiers were
deployed for the election.
The party accused Awe and other APC
chieftains, who appeared at the panel, of
spewing “lies from the pit of hell”.
In a statement yesterday by its Publicity
Secretary, Jackson Adebayo, in Ado Ekiti, the
PDP said: “How did the soldiers come in?
Where were they camped? Where were they
deployed?
“We are asking these questions because Ekiti
is not a coastal state to say they came in
through the seas.
“Ekiti has no rail lines to say hundreds of
train coaches brought them in.
“ Awe must also provide the army formations
from which the soldiers were brought to Ekiti.
“To the best of our knowledge, the few
soldiers that came were from the Nigerian
Army Brigade in nearby Ondo State and we
are sure that the strength of that brigade is
not up to 10,000 men.” |
I hope dey have learnt their lesson, still wondering which basket they will put their egg in 2019 now dat PDP had zoned it's presidency to the north, ooh I don forget say they would av left d zoo by den |
The traditional ruler of Opoji in Esan Central
local government area of Edo State, HRH
Aidenojie Ehidiamen, has chided Governor
Adams Oshiomhole for not opening several
alleged corruption files on former Governor
Lucky Igbinedion.
The Royal father said Oshiomhole refused to
act on several messages he sent to him on
where to find files containing information on
how money was diverted during Igbinedion’s
administration in the state.
Ehidamen, who spoke at a town hall meeting
to mark Oshiomhole’s seven years
anniversary, said it was wrong for roads in his
domain to be in bad shape, while those that
wreaked the state finances walked the street
free.
“There are so many files on Lucky Igbinedion.
We can start fresh prosecution. There was
the N200million that was diverted and they
are walking freely.”
“You have overlooked many things. You have
to come out so that Edo can move forward. I
don’t know whether you have become a
Reverend Father that forgives sinners.”
Responding, Governor Oshiomhole confirmed
receipts of petitions from the Roya Father.
Oshiomhole disclosed that he has ordered for
files on government assets that were sold
during Igbinedion administration with a view
to reclaiming those that were not properly
sold.
The governor also disclosed that all internal
roads at the Igbinedion University were
constructed by the Edo State Government
based on available records. The Nation |

Leadership of the Senate on Friday said that it
shut down activities on Thursday in solidarity
with its President, Bukola Saraki, because of
circumstances surrounding his ongoing assets
declaration trial.
Deputy Leader of the Senate, Ibn Na’Allah, told
the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that
the senate believed that rather than prosecution,
Saraki was being persecuted, hence the level of
solidarity from the lawmakers.
According to Na’Allah, majority of the senators
believe that the trial of the president of the
senate by the Code of Conduct Tribunal is in no
way a prosecution.
“You see, it is a matter of belief and I am going
to tell you in very clear language.
“The belief of the 8th Senate and substantial
number of the senators is that the trial of the
President of the Senate is persecution rather
than prosecution.
“If it is persecution, we believe that we have a
responsibility to stand by him.
“But if it is prosecution, every senator of the
federal republic believes and rightly so, that this
government must be given all the necessary
assistance it requires to fight corruption,’’ he
said.
He argued that Saraki’s trial for alleged offences
he committed 13 years ago was more of a
political move than a legal or anti-corruption
matter.
Maintaining that the senators felt that Saraki was
on political trial, Na’Allah said that all the
senators could not be wrong at the same time.
“Let me be honest with you; from the little that I
know, the senate sees the trial as more of a
political trial than a trial intended specifically for
the purpose for which it should be done.
“It may be wrong, it may be right, but the
circumstances of the trial and for the reason
that the subject matter of the trial occurred
about 12 or 13 years ago, you cannot fault the
senators if they come to that conclusion. https://www.today.ng/news/34576/why-senate-shut-down-for-sarakis-trial-naallah |

The All Progressives Congress
on Saturday said the resort to
‘crude’ personal attacks by
the spokesperson of the PDP,
Olisa Metuh, in his latest
statement is a clear
vindication of the party’s
(APC’s) stand that the PDP
should urgently rebrand or go
into extinction.
In a statement issued in
Lagos on Saturday by its
National Publicity Secretary,
Lai Mohammed, the party
said with a “combustible and
out-of-control spokesman like
Metuh, there is no way the
PDP will survive in
opposition”
”Metuh has shown, time and
again, that he lacks the
temperament, presence of
mind, sobriety, analytical
mind, decency in the use of
language and panache
needed for anyone to be the
face of any organisation, not
to talk of a political party.
”It was the realization of this
obvious fact that made us to
offer to provide the excitable
Metuh a crash course on how
to function as an opposition
spokesman. Unfortunately, it
is too late now as he seems to
have become totally
untrainable.
”Instead of reacting to our
sincere advice to his party to
urgently rebrand or go down,
Metuh chose to unleash his
vitriolic tongue on the APC
spokesman, just as he has
done to the judiciary and
many agencies of government
in recent times.
”In what is surely a looming
tragedy for the PDP, a
spokesman who helped write
the party into opposition is
now poised to further write it
into extinction,” it said.
The APC insisted that the PDP
should stop wailing and
insulting the judiciary over
the electoral tragedy which it brought
upon itself by engaging in mindless
rigging and violence in the last general
elections.
”The doomed opposition should also
immediately stop its failed strategy of
trying to distract the Buhari
Administration, which is busy cleaning
up the mess left behind by the 16 years
of locust of the sinking ‘PDP,” the party
said. |
