January 1 is special in many ways. Apart from being a significant day in any year, it is also a date that many people set aside to treat themselves, family members and friends to a feast. Equally, dozens others use the unique opportunity presented by the day to mend broken relationships and forge new partnerships – in fact it is a day millions across the globe look forward to with so much expectations. But in many parts of Nigeria this year, by the time 2017 comes, it will be devoid of its usual spark. This is not because they don’t have the resources to make it colourful – it will be dim for them because scores of them will be lying on hospital beds at the time the bells finally ring. For the second time in a row, Florence Mbakwe and her family would be spending New Year’s Day in the hospital ward. Her husband and father of their six children – Alfonscius, who is down with stroke, has been on admission at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos, for over one year. The middle-aged woman told Saturday PUNCH that her husband’s ailment has turned their once happy life into one filled with darkness. “We have spent at least 14 months in this hospital,” she said while recalling the experience earlier in the week. “We were here last Christmas and New Year’s Day and are about to spend another one here. My husband has stroke, things have been very terrible for us. “Initially when he had the stroke, he could not talk properly; he could not move his legs and soon became bedridden. If he wants to defecate, I am the one that helps him to the toilet and also cleans him up when he is done. “Though he is gradually responding to treatment, he is still a long way from total recovery. Everything he ever worked for is gone. The children have stopped attending school for the past one year; I had to send three of them to my mother in the village to ease the stress on me. The other three are with me in the hospital. It is only God that has been sustaining us,” she said. As a result of their dire financial state, the Mbakwes were ejected from their apartment earlier this year after they couldn’t pay the rent any longer. Florence and her children have been sleeping on the floor ever since. Sadly, this development has led to even more problems for the family. “My last child who is about four years old now suffers convulsion often as a result of the bare floor we sleep,” she said. “Sometimes I would be taking care of their father only for me to be told by people that my son has collapsed and had been rushed to the emergency room. “My husband trained a lot of people when he was healthy but I can’t see any of them now. It is just God and strangers that have been assisting us. My sister-in-law has also been of great help. We are not happy to be at the hospital at this time of the year,” she said. On Friday when one of our correspondents visited the Ireoluwa Clinic in the Ibafo area of Ogun State, a middle-aged woman, who later identified herself as Bukola, lay on the bed, beholding the ceiling fan as it rolled. She is not happy as she would be spending the New Year’s Day in the clinic. Down with typhoid fever, Bukola had been on a drip for a few days and was scheduled to spend more time there after doctors told her it wasn’t time for her to go. By the time she leaves the hospital, it will be January 1, 2017. “I’m not happy I will be spending the New Year’s Eve in the hospital. Five days ago, I just noticed after returning from the Ibafo market that I had poor appetite; I was also feeling some pain in my abdomen. My body temperature was high and I had headache. It was my husband who brought me here,” she said. The woman said she thought she would be treated and discharged that same day but never knew she would be placed on admission. “I thank God I’m getting better, which is why I can manage to talk to you. The doctor here said I should be careful of the water I drink. I will finish my drips by Saturday (today), but I’ve been advised to stay to relax very well in the hospital till Monday. “I’ve never spent New Year’s Day in the hospital before in my life, this is my first time but I thank God I am alive,” she said. At the Ifako Ijaiye General Hospital, a government-owned health facility in Lagos, it was the same story for Kuburat Adejobi. The 50-year-old woman, who trades in baby items, told Saturday PUNCH that on December 26, 2016 she fainted and was rushed to the hospital where she has remained ever since. “I have diabetes and the doctor said the complication was what made me to faint on December 26. I have been told that if I don’t stay in the hospital for the time being, I may die. “My life is important, even though I don’t feel good that while everybody is enjoying, I am suffering in the hospital. I just want to be fine.” In the same hospital, our correspondent spoke with a 31-year-old nursing mother, Rachael Nkoyo, who had a baby on December 23, 2016 but developed complications, which has kept her bedridden since then. She spent Christmas in the hospital and has been told by doctors that she would be kept in the health facility till 2017. “I have been praying to God to give me strength so that I would be strong enough to leave the hospital before New Year’s Day. I have never spent the first day of a year in a hospital before. It is painful but what can I do? “It is not easy to know that people are celebrating the New Year but you are lying on a hospital bed unable to go home. I could not even eat the food my husband brought on Christmas Day because I was too weak and was vomiting. I really cannot wait to go home,” she said. At the same hospital, a patient, who identified himself only as Frank, told one of our correspondents that he had been at the place for three weeks and was most likely going to be there by the time 2017 arrives on January 1. Frank, who uttered each word with so much effort and pain, said he never knew he would be in the hospital as he was already making plans for Christmas and New Year celebrations before he fell sick. “I came back to Nigeria few weeks ago and was planning to travel back to meet my family after the New Year celebration but about two weeks after I came back, I fell sick and was rushed to the hospital, where I was diagnosed with stroke. This is the first time I would be marking the Yuletide in the hospital and it is so painful. But we thank God for the gift of life. “I now see that when you are out there in good health, you seem not to have a clear picture of what other people go through. If God preserves our lives, we would also shout ‘Happy New Year’ here. What is important is to be alive,” he said. At the Accident and Emergency ward of the hospital, dozens of patients could be seen lying on beds at different corners of the wards. Many of the patients told Saturday PUNCH that they won’t mind signing for their own discharge at the hospital if the doctors and nurses would certify them fit enough to go home for the festive holiday. “We even have some persons who wouldn’t mind signing for their own release, because once they were not released on Friday, they would have to stay till Tuesday when work would resume,” a nurse, who asked not to be named, told one of our correspondents. At a private hospital in the Onipanu area of Lagos, Irepodun Memorial Clinic, a handful of patients on admission at the facility expressed sadness when one of our correspondents, pretending to be on a visit to pray with them, chatted them up. Bimbola Mayegun, a 29-year-old mother of two, said she was rushed into the facility on Thursday afternoon after her body temperature suddenly became very high and collapsed in the process. According to her, diagnosis showed that she had untreated malaria typhoid in her system and also a lot of cholesterol. Doctors at the hospital have managed to stabilise her condition but warned that she needed enough rest and close monitoring for her to be fully fit again. “I thought by Friday I would have been discharged by the doctor after stabilising but I have to be here till maybe Monday so that I can be properly monitored. It therefore means that I would be celebrating New Year’s Day in the hospital for the first time in my life. Even though this has disrupted all the plans I had for this season, I am happy to be alive,” she said. Another patient at the clinic, Festus Abomate, said he still finds it hard to believe and accept that he is going to be crossing into 2017 while lying on a hospital bed. The 41-year-old man, a dealer in second-hand clothes at the Yaba market, sustained bruises and cuts all over his body when the commercial motorcycle he was riding on last Wednesday collided with a speeding bus trying to evade arrest. The Delta native is to remain at the hospital till the new year when a date for his discharge is yet unknown. “I was rushing home to pick my bag and head to the park to board a night bus to Aba where I had hoped to spend the New Year holiday with our family members based there but God had other ideas. The motorcycle carrying me collided with a commercial bus running from police. The motorcyclist broke his left arm while I sustained serious injuries all over my body. I don’t know how long I will remain in this hospital but what I know is that I will be here when others are shouting Happy New Year. I feel so bad about this,” he said, tears almost popping out of his eyes. http://punchng.com/wish-turn-clock-back-nigerians-will-spend-new-years-day-hospital-2/

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday ordered the Ministry of Finance to pay the Super Falcons their entitlements. The Falcons, who beat hosts Cameroon 1-0 to win the African Women’s Cup of Nations in Yaounde on December 3, were forced to embark on protest in Abuja after the Nigeria Football Federation failed to pay them their bonuses and allowances. The eighth time African champions marched on the Presidential Villa on Wednesday to press home their demands. The Chief of Staff to the President, Mr. Abba Kyari, told State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa that Buhari had directed the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, and the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr. Solomon Dalung, to ensure that the players were paid today. Kyari, who just returned from a medical trip abroad said, he had conveyed the president’s directive to the players, who staged a protest to the gate of the Presidential Villa earlier on Wednesday. He said, “The problem has been resolved. The players did us proud. I congratulated them on the feat they achieved. “I have also told them that all their entitlements would be paid latest by Thursday. “We have called the Minister of Finance as well as the Minister of Youth and Sports. They will be paid by tomorrow (Thursday). The details, I don’t know.” The players had planned to enter the Presidential Villa where they expected the Federal Executive Council meeting to hold. The meeting however did not hold following the presentation of the 2017 Appropriation Bill to the National Assembly by the President. After Kyari addressed the placard-carrying players, they thereafter moved to the National Assembly in continuation of their protest. Some of their placards read, “We are your children, pity us”; “Let us respect women”; “female football deserves respect.” They described their neglect as pathetic and embarrassing, despite winning the AWCON, noting that they were about to be ejected from their hotel. They said it was important for the President to order the NFF to pay them to encourage up-and-coming players to win titles for the country. The treatment meted out to the record Aftican champions by the Nigerian authorities is in sharp contrast to that received by runners-up Indomitable Lionesses from the Cameroonian government. The social media has been awash with pictures, videos and stories of the lavish ceremony by President Paul Biya to honour the Cameroonian ladies, despite finishing as runners-up on home soil. http://punchng.com/buhari-orders-finance-ministry-pay-falcons/

The police in Lagos State have arrested a woman who sold suspected adulterated liquor in the Oko Afo, Badagry area of the state, in connection with the death of a 16-year-old boy, identified only as Ngozi. Ngozi, who lived with his parents on Temidola Street, Oko Afo, reportedly died about an hour after drinking local gin. PUNCH Metro learnt that one Olufunke had sent her son, Olawumi and Ngozi to buy the gin from the woman, whose name had yet to be ascertained. It was gathered that the seller gave Ngozi an extra gin in a nylon, which he drank while returning from the errand. He was said to have become drunk and was taken home by Olufunke, who also resides on the street. Shorty after Olufunke led Ngozi home, the teenager was said to have gone into convulsion and was rushed to a hospital in the community, where he was pronounced dead. A resident, who gave his name as Dele Kalejaiye, said the case was reported to the police at the Morogbo Police Division. Kalejaiye, who spoke with our correspondent in Yoruba, said, “On Saturday, December 3, Mama Olawumi (Olufunke) called Ngozi and sent him to buy ogogoro (liquor) from her customer at Oko Afo bus stop. She asked Olawumi to accompany him. “When they came back with the drink, Ngozi was already drunk. When he could no longer control himself, she (Olufunke) led him to his house. Her child did not take from the extra drink the seller gave them. She (Olufunke) had also been arrested.” Another resident, who identified himself simply as Jimoh, said the deceased’s father hardly stayed at home since the incident happened. “As I speak, I have yet to see him around for almost a week now. I learnt he stays with a relative somewhere in Badagry so he could get over the shock of his son’s death. He was really devastated. He loves him so much and he had warned him several times against taking alcohol,” he added. A police source at the station disclosed to PUNCH Metro that the remains of the deceased had been deposited in the Badagry General Hospital morgue for autopsy. “Immediately the father of the deceased reported the case, Olawumi was arrested but the seller fled. She was eventually apprehended a few days ago. Only the boy drank the drink the seller gave them. Possibly he had never taken such before or the gin was adulterated,” the source added. The Police Public Relations Officer in Lagos, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the incident, saying, “The case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Panti, for further investigation.” http://punchng.com/16-year-old-dies-taking-adulterated-gin-seller-arrested/

A 25-year-old man, Tolani Ajisefini, has lost one of his ears in a fight that ensued after speaking against hemp smoking in the Mushin area of Lagos State. PUNCH Metro learnt that Ajisefini, a site manager, had lived with his parents on Olateju Street, Mushin, where the incident happened, before relocating to the Isolo area of the state. However, he was said to be a regular visitor to the Mushin area where he had friends. It was learnt that the victim had visited the area penultimate Saturday when he saw some youths smoking hemp in his former house. He was said to have cautioned them and insisted they left the place. A resident, who spoke with our correspondent on condition of anonymity, said the smokers ignored him. “They said he had left the area and had no right to dictate to them what to do and what not to do. “This resulted in arguments and later degenerated into a fight. One of Tolani’s (Ajisefini) friends also backed him and fought the gang members. Tolani, however, asked his unnamed friend to leave the matter to him alone. “He pushed his friend aside and ordered him to leave the place. One Michael mocked the unnamed friend, saying Tolani did not appreciate his effort.” Our correspondent was told that Ajisefini attacked Michael for the statement. In the ensuing scuffle, Ajisefini was alleged to have grabbed a bottle to attack the suspect, who parried it. “Michael then bit off one of Ajisefini’s ears. Michael also had a bite injury, ” the source added. The victim was reportedly rushed to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-araba, Surulere, where he was quickly attended to by the medical personnel on duty. It was learnt that the ear could not be reattached as the tissue was already dead. “The ear had to be thrashed. The doctors said they may have to perform an operation on him and give him artificial ear. He has been deformed,” a close friend of the victim said. The case was allegedly reported at the Olosan Police Division. The spokesperson for LUTH, Mr. Kenneth Otuneme, said he would get back to our correspondent, but he had yet to do so as of press time. The Police Public Relations Relations Officer, Lagos State, SP Dolapo Badmos, said the police did not have a record of the incident. http://punchng.com/mans-ear-bitten-off-criticising-hemp-smokers/

A suspected fraudster, Ekperebuike Akadonye, has been arrested by the police for allegedly parading himself as the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, on the Internet. The 29-year-old suspect, who was apprehended by the Inspector-General Special Intelligence Response Team, also allegedly defrauded a Saudi Arabia-based doctor, identified as Hassan Alkahallaf, to the tune of $10,000. Alkahallaf was said to have earlier been defrauded by Nigerians via the Internet on two occasions, while efforts to recover the funds had proved abortive. PUNCH Metro gathered that Akadonpe got Alkahallaf into his trap when he introduced himself as the IG and promised to help the doctor recover his loses. He reportedly demanded $10,000 from Alkahallaf to facilitate the legal processes of the recovery and the victim was said to have paid the sum into his (Akadonpe’s) account in instalments. A police source told our correspondent that the doctor contacted the IG through the Saudi Arabian Embassy in Nigeria after realising that he had been duped again. “The suspect contacted his victims, including Hassan (Alkahallaf), who is attached to the Department of Urology, Security Forces Hospital, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, via an email address, igofnieria@outlook.com, purportedly belonging to IG Ibrahim Idris. “He claimed that President Muhammadu Buhari, in his fight against corruption, had directed the IG to make refunds to victims who had been defrauded by Nigerians in the past. “The doctor replied to Akadonye’s emails, believing he was the real IG of the Nigeria Police Force, and he eventually paid him $10,000 in instalments to get back his lost funds. He lied to the doctor that he would use the money to hire a lawyer who would represent him since he wasn’t based in Nigeria,” the source said. Another source told PUNCH Metro that the IG directed the IG team to go after the suspect after the case was reported through the Saudi Embassy. It was learnt that sometime in October, the team trailed Akadonye to Imo State, where he hails from and apprehended him. “A mobile phone and a laptop he used in carrying out the fraud were recovered from him. He was also found with ATM cards and an identity card of a Federal Bureau of Investigation officer. He is currently being interrogated by operatives of the IG response team,” the source said. The suspect, in his statement, allegedly confessed to the fraud, saying he took to the crime after his shops were demolished by the government. He said, “I am a trader and I had shops in Mbano, Imo State. But they were demolished by the government. One of my friends introduced me to Internet fraud. I started by searching for prominent persons on the Internet. When I found Dr Alkahallaf, he told me he had some funds trapped in Nigeria and he wanted to claim them. I presented myself to him as the IG and told him the President had mandated me to assist fraudsters’ victims to get back their lost funds. I asked him to pay for a lawyer. He believed and paid me.” When contacted, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Don Awunah, promised to get back to our correspondent with comments. http://punchng.com/29-year-old-impersonates-ig-idris-defrauds-saudi-doctor/

The management of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, has started probing the suicide of a final year student of Agric Economics, Tobechukwu Okeke. Okeke was found on Sunday daggling from a rope in his residence in Odigwe – a few metres away from the school. PUNCH Metro learnt that a suicide note was recovered from his apartment and handed over to the Chief Security Officer of the institution. It was gathered that the school authorities were using the content of the note to unravel what actually led to his death. However, some friends of the deceased, who commented on the incident on Facebook, said he had invested some money he borrowed in a failed gambling and had hard times repaying his creditors. A student of the institution, Daniel Nwachukwu, in a chat with our correspondent, said, “The much I know is that he committed suicide because of financial issues. He lost some money to betting; he also borrowed some money. Probably the frustration of his inability to pay back made him commit suicide. I don’t know exactly how much he owed.” Nwachukwu described Okeke as versatile, adding that the corpse had yet to be removed as of Sunday evening. “He helped me repair my faulty electrical appliance and fix my wiring for free. He was good at fixing electrical appliances. He shared his dream of going into building wiring and other electricity-related works as a career,” he added. A Political Science student, Chidozie Emmanuel, also attributed the suicide to financial crisis that had plagued the victim. “This is a guy I know. He was frustrated by financial crisis and parental issues,” he said. A check by PUNCH Metro on the timeline of Okeke’s Facebook account showed that he was into Mavrodi Mondial Movement – popularly called MMM. His post, dated September 23, read, “Have you heard about MMM? “This is a platform where you make 30 per cent of your investment every four weeks. For registration, please contact me…” http://punchng.com/unn-management-probes-students-suicide/ The following day, Okeke, again, persuaded interested members of the public to exploit the platform. “MMM is enriching the lives of millions of Nigerians every day. If you care to join or you have any question, please send me a message or comment below,” the post read. However, an undergraduate, Chukwudi Ifeanyi, called for comprehensive investigation, stating that Okeke might have been murdered. He said, “I don’t think Nigerians are that suicidal. This could be a staged murder. Unfortunately, Nigeria does not have a strong crime investigating system. “I also think suicide is never an option. Life is precious. God is the source of life, allow him keep you.” A student, Ogbuefinukoefi Okechukwu said, “This is stage-managed. One major feature of suicide by hanging is tongue out. The person’s tongue must come out. In this case, there was no such feature.” When contacted on the telephone for comments, the Dean of Students Affairs, UNN, Prof. Uju Umo, directed our correspondent to the school’s Chief Security Officer. She said, “He committed suicide and left a suicide note. Contact the university’s CSO.” However, calls to the telephone line of the CSO rang out. He had also yet to reply to a text message sent to him as of press time.

A reliable source said, “Senator Obanikoro came to the EFCC office on Monday morning as part of investigations into the N4.7bn. Since he has confessed that he was the one who collected the N4.7bn and distributed it, he is in the best position to testify in court. “The EFCC wants him to testify against Agbele which will also build a strong case against Fayose who currently enjoys immunity. Obanikoro has agreed and will be listed as one of the EFCC witnesses. “If Agbele is convicted, it automatically means that Fayose will also be convicted once he is charged in 2018. So let Fayose continue to play games. Omisore and Obanikoro are cooperating and returning money. Their troubles will end soon while Fayose’s own will keep getting worse.” When contacted, Obanikoro’s lawyer, Mr. James Onoja (SAN), said he was not aware that his client was with the EFCC but promised to find out. “I have been in court all day so I was not aware that he (Obanikoro) was with the EFCC. I will find out,” he said. However, a source told our correspondent that the EFCC could still charge Obanikoro to court if he failed to cooperate with the EFCC. He said, “Obanikoro has returned N104m and has pledged to return N480m in instalments every four months but if he cannot cooperate with the EFCC, then he and his sons may be charged along with the others. “Plea bargain and negotiation are a standard practice in criminal justice across the world.” Obanikoro had told the EFCC in his statement of oath that he received N4.7bn from the Office of the National Security Adviser under the leadership of Col. Sambo Dasuki in June 2014. In his statement, the ex-minister told the EFCC that he handed N1.3bn to the then governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore; while N1.219bn was given to Fayose through his aide, Agbele, during the build-up to the Ekiti governorship election which Fayose won. Obanikoro was said to have converted a remainder of the money into $5.377m and handed it to Fayose at Spotless Hotel, Ado Ekiti, in the presence of the then Ekiti State PDP Secretary, Tope Aluko, and other party stalwarts. The ex-minister is believed to have kept about N785m for himself, an action which is said to have angered Fayose. Agbele is currently standing trial before Justice Dimgba Igwe of a Federal High Court for allegedly receiving N1.219bn on behalf of Fayose. At the last sitting, Mr. Alade Sunday, a manager and branch Head of Zenith Bank, narrated how the money was disbursed on the instructions of Agbele. He had also said it took the cashiers about 10 days to count all the money. Sunday had said Obanikoro flew the cash to Akure Airport and the money was loaded onto a bullion van. He had said, “When we got to the airport, we waited for some minutes before the aircraft arrived. When the aircraft offloaded its passengers, one of them appeared to me to be Senator Musiliu Obanikoro and the other one appeared to be his ADC, Adewale. “Agbele walked up to them and had a discussion with them. Thereafter, he signalled to me to bring the van. Bags loaded with cash were loaded into the van and Obanikoro’s ADC, Agbele and I drove back to the bank. “When we got to the bank, we ‘bundle counted’ the cash and it was N724,500,000. Agbele told us that more money was still coming and then, Obanikoro’s ADC left for the airport immediately. “In the evening, all of us left for the airport a second time. After the passengers disembarked, we offloaded the cash bags into our bullion van and drove back to the bank to ascertain how much the cash was. The second tranche was N494,990,000, bringing the total to about N1.219, 490,000. “We headed straight to our zonal head office where instructions were given by Agbele on how the funds were to be credited to various accounts.” http://punchng.com/alleged-n4-7bn-fraud-obanikoro-testify-fayose/

An apprentice, identified only as Grace, has allegedly absconded with the two children of her employer, Mrs. Suliyat Azeez, in the Okokomaiko area of Lagos State. The victims were identified as Farouk, 4; and six-year-old Kafayat. PUNCH Metro learnt that Grace fled with the children on Friday, less than 24 hours after she resumed apprenticeship at their mother’s workshop on Ora Street, PPL bus stop, Okokomaiko. It was learnt that the children had returned from school and gone to their mother’s shop. Grace was said to have claimed she was going out to buy food and asked the children to accompany her. She was, however, alleged to have absconded with the children. Our correspondent was told that nobody had her contact or knew her place of residence. The victims’ mother, Suliyat, said she had gone for a meeting of hairdressers when the incident happened. She said, “The girl came to my shop on Wednesday and said she wanted to learn hairdressing. I asked who her guarantor was because she said she came alone. She said she stayed with a friend in the area and she would have come with her, but the friend had gone to work. “On Thursday, she returned and bought soft drinks and biscuits to celebrate the commencement of her apprenticeship. I even shared the drinks with people. That was the day she started working. “On Friday, I planned to go to her place of residence, but I had to first attend a meeting of hairdressers in the community. When I returned from the meeting around 4pm, I was told nobody knew where she went to with my children and we started searching for them. I believe she hypnotised my children.” The victims’ father, Fatai, a mechanic, said the family had reported the incident at the Ojo and Okokomaiko police divisions. He said other efforts at finding the children had been abortive. “The girl just identified herself as Grace. She should be about 20 years old. My wife couldn’t collect her phone number because her phone (Suliyat) was faulty. She just decided to admit her because the girl asked for help. We don’t know any of her relatives and friends,” Fatai added. A relative, Mr. Sanni Saidi, blamed Suliyat for not getting a snapshot of the suspect, adding that it could be difficult to find her. He said, “On the day of her induction, Suliyat could have taken her snapshot. She could have taken her phone number. But she didn’t do all these and I think she should take the blame. This shows the extent that people could go to execute their devilish intentions. How could you steal two children without any fear of God? We appeal to the security agencies to help us find the children.” The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, said the matter was not reported at the police stations. She urged the parents to go back to the station nearest to them, “so that invetigation can commence http://punchng.com/apprentice-absconds-employers-children-day-resumption/

A former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party’s Board of Trustees, Tony Anenih, said he blocked ex-Vice-President Atiku Abubakar from succeeding former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Anenih stated this in his book, titled ‘My Life and Nigerian Politics,’ which was presented in Abuja on Saturday. Anenih, who served as the Minister of Works and Housing between 1999 and 2002, said Abubakar became too ambitious during the build-up to the 2003 presidential election in which Obasanjo was seeking a second term. “As a result of my preparations for Chief Obasanjo’s second tenure, I stepped on the toes of many of those who did not want him to seek a second term. These are the people I can now refer to as members of the ‘G3’. These were General Ibrahim Babangida, (ex-) Vice- President Atiku Abubakar and the (ex-) National Security Adviser, General Aliu Gwarzo. “There was no other way I could have offended the vice-president other than that I prevented him from being PDP’s presidential candidate in the 2003 presidential election. He erroneously believed that he was the only politician at the Villa and that he was better qualified than the President. I was well ahead of him in all his plans to prevent Chief Obasanjo from running (for re-election).” Anenih, however, noted that after blocking Abubakar, the former vice-president also ensured that he (Anenih) lost his position in Obasanjo’s cabinet. The former PDP BoT Chairman also claimed that he was the one who made Atiku second-in-command in 1999. He said after the PDP presidential primary of 1998, the then Chairman of the party, Solomon Lar, recommended three northerners to be Obasanjo’s running mate. The three nominees were Prof. Jerry Ghana, Abubakar Rimi and Adamu Ciroma. Lar was said to have told Obasanjo that Rimi was his preferred candidate but Obasanjo wasn’t convinced. Anenih, according to the book, then advised Obasanjo to pick Atiku, who had just won the governorship election in Adamawa State and was waiting to be sworn in. He added, “I asked Obasanjo whether he would want a vice-president that would give him absolute confidence and allow him to sleep with his two eyes closed or whether he would want a vice-president he did not trust. “He answered that he would like to sleep with his two eyes closed. It was at this point that I asked him: ‘What about Atiku?’ Chief Obasanjo’s answer was that Atiku had just won his governorship election and the law might not allow him to come on board as his running mate. “We both decided to get a lawyer to advise us and Barrister Alimi Rasaq of Kwara State was sent for. He advised us that there was nothing in the constitution that prevented Atiku from being his running mate; especially as Atiku had not been sworn in.” Speaking at the book presentation, which had in attendance several PDP leaders, Anenih announced that he had quit politics. However, former President Goodluck Jonathan, who was a special guest of honour, rejected Anenih’s retirement, urging him not to abandon the PDP. Meanwhile, the ex-minister said he survived death after an eight-hour heart surgery. He stated this during a thanksgiving service held at Our Lady Queen of Nigeria Pro-Cathedral Church, Garki, Abuja. He said, “There is nothing God cannot do if you believe in him sincerely. I had a problem with my heart. Sometime back, I was on my way to drop off some items for a friend. I was on a bus and settled in at the back and two male youth corps members got in after me and sat beside me. The journey had not been long when they began a very loud discussion on girls and relationships. I normally listen to music but on that day, I wasn’t with my earphones, so, I was treated to story after story of their sex lives, and then the talk shifted to “passing girls around.” These two young men were actually engaged in a serious discussion about the different girls that they slept with and dumped. These guys were not only talking about who they passed to whom after they had finished with the girls, they were actually sharing messages and pictures in the bus! This issue of ladies giving out nude pictures to random guys that they are dating and then ending up in trouble later on is something I have talked and written about many times and very few people actually believe it. Nothing was sacred. I had to even look over to be sure this wasn’t some ruse but there it was. Pictures, chats and all! One even declared in vulgar terms that he hates it when he has slept with a lady and gotten tired of her, then passes her to one of his friends and she messes up that new relationship; that is if you can even call that a relationship in the first place! He says such a girl was being foolish and that if she would only behave herself and also gives the new guy all the sex and attention he wants, she may end up marrying him. I found it very shocking that someone with a functioning brain could actually say such not to talk of thinking about it. For him, what he has done is alright and has no bad side but the lady in question is wrong for deciding not to sleep with some new guy? It did not end there. The other corps member agreed with him and said such girls were just noise-makers and horrible individuals. In his opinion, they should be happy and sleep with the new boyfriend, wash, cook and clean for him and then she could see if they had a future together. When I see such people, I often wonder and sometimes ask if they would be happy to see their own sister in such a position. Who raises these boys and what are they teaching them? Those two were actually praising themselves as gods, masters of sex and deception (since the girls didn’t know they were “used” and dumped with style then stylishly handed over for “reuse” by another person) and yet they were offended that the new guy the ladies are with do not get sexed up too and waited on? Is that not a high level of foolishness and brazen stupidity? I keep telling ladies to be careful with such guys but some will never listen. If you want to wash, cook and steam up his bed all day and night, no problem. It is your life, but do not think this is not exactly how some of you end up – passed around like a used rag from guy to guy. Not every guy is worth your time and attention! Do not be so desperate to be in a relationship, loved and married that you just settle for any Temi, Ayo or Uche! Have standards! Use your head for goodness sake! I don’t, for a second, doubt that many ladies sleep with such guys, cook and clean for them and then may end up marrying the person. I won’t twist it to suit my personal beliefs but, it doesn’t change the fact that a lot of time it doesn’t work that way. Ladies need to be careful. The corps members I talked about have naked pictures, recordings and chats of girls they had slept with and records of how they were transacted like money from one guy to the other. Who’s to say they won’t use them tomorrow to disgrace them or get money from them? Is it worth it? http://punchng.com/ladies-stop-sending-nude-photos/

Agents of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested and detained Tunde Ayeni, a former chairman of Skye Bank, over allegations that he bribed a former minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Bala Mohammed, to acquire 54 plots of land in Abuja, the Nigerian capital. Two EFCC sources told SaharaReporters that Mr. Ayeni was arrested yesterday and has remained in detention because he was initially uncooperative. One of our sources added that Mr. Ayeni is also being investigated for playing roles in several other deals involving former First Lady Patience Jonathan and a former head of state, Abubakar Abdulsalam, who co-owns a telecommunications company with the former banking executive. Our sources disclosed that Mr. Ayeni was still undergoing interrogation and may remain in detention as investigators work hard to unearth his many deals. http://saharareporters.com/2016/11/25/efcc-detains-former-skye-bank-chairman-tunde-ayeni-over-n1bn-bribe-ex-fct-minister

A resident of Ndemili community in Ndokwa West Local Government Area of Delta State, Festus Nwaomucha, has narrated how a kidnapping gang, which included a 70-year-old woman, sold his five-year-old niece for N500,000 According to Nwaomucha, a number of children had been going missing in the community over time but on September 24, his niece, Glory Oyibo, was snatched right from the family compound in Ndemili, throwing the family into a panic over what might have happened to the little girl. He said for over two weeks, the family made several efforts to locate the child but they got a break on November 13, when news filtered in that two kidnappers had been caught in Issele-Uku, a suburb of Asaba, with two children in their vehicles. Saturday PUNCH learnt that when the two suspects – Emmanuel Udagwu, a resident of Agbor Alidinma and Celestina Enebeli from Ulogwe Isumpe – were arrested by the police, they confessed to have been involved in some previous kidnapping of children from Ndemili and surrounding communities. Nwaomucha said the two communities the suspects come from, share boundaries with Ndemili. They confessed kidnapping about nine children so far in the entire localities. “When they kidnapped children, they transported their victims to Asaba, where a 70-year-old-woman received the victims for onward ferry to other places for sale,” he said. The septuagenarian, who has since been arrested has reportedly made statements about the clients he sold the children to. “The old woman confessed that she had sold my little niece along with another victim, a boy, for N500,000 to some people in the East. She sold them through another man in Asaba. The man outsmarted us during arrest, abandoning his taxi colour car,” he said. The police have said efforts are still ongoing to recover Glory and other stolen victims from wherever the gang sold them to. “I want to thank all those who have been standing by my family through prayers, which have paid off. We are still praying for Glory to be alive in captivity so that she can be found in good health and reunited with her parents and other siblings, who have not stopped crying day and night since she was kidnapped,” Nwaomucha said. The police have said they are working to ensure that other members of the gang were rounded up while the identities of missing children would be determined to effect their recovery from where they are sold to. http://punchng.com/woman-70-sold-niece-n500000-delta-man/

Tony Okafor, Awka A former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, has said that his successor, Chief Willie Obiano, has no legal right to bar him from visiting the state or airing his opinion about the state. Obi, who spoke at Oraifite during the burial of Chief Emeka Offor’s father, Benneth Offor, described an alleged threat by Obiano to unleash an attack on him if he did not behave himself, as an empty one. A media aide to Obiano, Mr. Oliver Okpala, was reported to have threatened to deal with Obi and a former Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Oseloka Obaze, over their comments on Obiano, which were considered to be unwarranted. The governor’s aide said, “To this end, this is a notice that, henceforth, any further unwarranted attack on the governor will be met with a very tough response. “Let it be noted that we have done our investigations, and we know that those sponsoring these unfounded attacks against the governor include those who have tasted power before, either as governor or secretary to the state government. “We have their records, to the minutest of details, and we will not hesitate to unleash a higher degree of attack on their persons with verifiable proofs in our possession so that the world would know the dirty stuff they are made of.” Obi, in his reaction, said it would be disastrous if Anambra degenerated into a dictatorial society under a democracy. On what he would do should Obiano carry out his threat, Obi said the state should be advancing in civilisation by upholding the tenets of democracy and decency, rather than going back to the Hobbesian era. He said, “Such an order will amount to asking me to go on exile. I have a house in Onitsha and live there. “I served Anambra State for eight years. As the governor, I kept saying I would live in the state for the rest of my life to enable me share the joy and grief of the people. Why would somebody say I should not attend events in the state? “Why would somebody request that I should stop saying what I did as the Governor of Anambra State, when people are still talking about the good deeds of the likes of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe and Chief M.I. Okpara? “Most of the things said are not for self-adulation, but to use my experience to demonstrate to our people that we can do certain things we thought are impossible, an example was that I returned schools to the church and provided them with over 30,000 computers, generators and Internet connectivity. “The fact is that under our government, we cleared arrears of pension of over N35bn, paid for all the certificates generated by contractors without borrowing a kobo, but instead left money, including dollars for the state.” Meanwhile, Obi’s kinsmen, under the aegis of Agulu Leaders of Thought on Sunday appealed to Obiano, to stop threatening their son. They reminded Obiano that it was Obi that single-handedly made him a governor. A statement signed by the group’s secretary, Joachim Emegwamuo, and made available to journalists in Awka, read in part, “When the news of the threat to the life of our son, Mr. Peter Obi, started circulating, we ignored it as one of those rumours until Chief Joe-Martins Uzodike made it clear during a radio programme. “We are aware that it was Obi who single-handedly made Obiano governor and we are also aware of several indignities Obi is suffering under the governor, ranging from lack of respect to continued and inexplicable witch-hunt. “Obiano has deliberately allowed his aides to abuse Obi to the point of openly denying the over N75bn bequeathed to him. “Obiano has abandoned the projects started by Obi upon which he was elected, thus portraying Obi as an unreliable leader among the Anambra people. “If anything happens to Mr. Peter Obi or any of his aides, Obiano should be held responsible.” http://punchng.com/cant-bar-anambra-obi-tells-obiano/

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested members of a syndicate which allegedly specialised in selling newborn babies in the Satellite Town area of the state. PUNCH Metro learnt that some members of the gang, led by a woman, Chinenye Amama, were arrested penultimate Friday by policemen attached to the D9 Section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba. Our correspondent was told that the suspects were caught with a female newborn baby, who had been rescued and reunited with her mother. A police source said the rescued baby girl and her mother had been transferred to the Juvenile Welfare Centre, Alakara, in the Mushin area. He said, “The syndicate was arrested on November 4, at about 6am. A team of policemen, acting on a tip-off, stormed an isolated house, where the syndicate kept their victims. “We recovered a female newborn baby from the suspects and they are in custody at the SCIID, including their leader, Chinenye.” The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the arrest, saying the suspects mentioned a religious leader as their boss. She added that the police were working on the information. She said, “The case is under investigation. Preliminary investigation reveals that it is a syndicate that specialises in selling newborn babies. One religious leader was named by the suspects. “The command is working on the clue to ascertain the religious leader’s culpability. Investigation will be made open on that as it goes.” The police in Lagos State have also arrested an estate agent, Sunday Obayemi, for allegedly defrauding people with fake Lagos State Government letterheads. The suspect, 45-year-old Obayemi, was arrested by policemen attached to the Lagos State Task Force on Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit, Alausa, Ikeja. Our correspondent gathered that a tenant, Nurudeen Duroti, who stayed on Olumo Street, Agege, had reported Obayemi, who hails from Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State, as a suspected fraudster. It was learnt that policemen thereafter searched the suspect’s house and found fake Lagos State Government documents. The suspect said in his statement that he retired from the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment in 2014, adding that he used the fake documents to extort money from tenants. He said, “The last one I did was a notice to quit, which I served a tenant on Olumo Street, after collecting N50, 000 from the landlady of the house with a fake Lagos task force letterhead. “I made my money from using fake letterheads of government’s ministries and agencies. I will stop this illegal business if I am pardoned by the government.” The task force chairman, SP Saheed Egbeyemi, said the state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, had directed that the suspect be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department. SP Egbeyemi enjoined Nigerians to be wary of dubious elements, who specialised in duping members of the public with fake documents of government agencies. http://punchng.com/syndicate-selling-newborn-babies-arrested-lagos/

Kunle Falayi The police have arrested an eight-man gang of armed robbers said to be terrorising Abuja, Kogi and Kano states. Among them is Rekia Musa, a divorcee and Accounting graduate of the Kogi State University, who told the police that she had only been an informant for the gang for four months. The police said the gang had links with a suspect, Zakeria Isiaka arrested recently by the Inspector-General of Police Response Team, along the Okene-Akure Expressway. It would be recalled that on November 5, Saturday PUNCH had reported Isiaka’s claim that he could have become the Chief Security Officer of Kogi State if the late All Progressives Congress candidate in the governorship election in Kogi State, Abubakar Audu, had not die. Others arrested along with Musa are Ismaila Abdulmumuni, Abu-Amidu Disu, Tenimu Musa, Boniface David, Aliu Isah and Danjuma Cyprian. A police source told Saturday PUNCH that the suspects confessed to have carried out several robbery operations, including an April 2015 operation in Abuja where about N200m was stolen from some politicians. In her statement, Musa, popularly called Hajia, explained that about four months ago, one of her friends, Isha Mohammed, approached her and said he knew some politicians who had stolen public money and hidden them in their houses. She said, “He asked if I could help him to get a charm that would make it possible for him to disappear, called Etubi. He said if he could disappear into the politician’s house and steal the money unnoticed, he would give me a large cut of the money. “I then travelled to my village in Agba Local Government Area of Kogi State and met a boy called Tenimu. I told him about the plan and he promised that he could get the charm. “But instead, Tenimu told his friends about the money. The friends were armed robbers. They then came and tricked me into taking them to the politician’s house in Kano State.” According to Musa, when the gang got to the house in Kano, they were discouraged by the heavy presence of policemen and went back home. However, she said she became upset because the plan did not fall through. “I thought targetting politicians who have stolen government money was a good idea because I was broke. Few days later, Isah got another piece of information about an immigration officer based in Lagos, who had stolen government money. “I contacted my gang and we went to the man’s house and robbed him. But we didn’t get as much money as Isah told us the man had at home.” Police sources said the suspects came on the radar of security agents after robbing the immigration officer, a comptroller in the service. Musa, AKA Hajia, also allegedly went around town to scout for victims for the gang before her arrest. Twenty-five-year-old Mohammed, who brought the information about the immigration officer to the gang, explained that it was the only operation he ever went with the gang. The suspect, also a Kogi State indigene, explained the he was a fashion designer with a shop in Bwari area of Abuja. He said, “It was the bad friends I met in Abuja that led me into armed robbery. There was this customer, Ismaila, whom I made clothes for. He was the first person who told me about the money the politicians usually brought to his office at Mabuchi area of Abuja. “He said the politicians shared the money there and he said he could rob them. I then told him about one of my customers, Dan, who normally wore a charm around his waist. I told him he could take part in the robbery. “I also told another friend, Ismaila (Abdulmumuni). When I informed Dan about the money and the plan to rob the politicians, he said we should hold a meeting along the Duste Expressway in Abuja. He also brought some of his friends and Dan asked that we should go to the place. “After a while, Dan said we might need guns for the robbery and that the politicians might have some powerful charms.” Mohammed said on the day the politicians came again to share money at the location, the gang was immediately alerted by Abdulmumuni. The gang stormed the place and robbed the politicians of over N200m. Mohammed said, “After the operation, Dan called and gave me N4.5m, which he said I should share with Ismalia. But I later learnt that we actually got more than N200m from the robbery. Dan alone got N25m.” http://punchng.com/targeted-politicians-stole-money-hajia-robbers-informant/ |
When people graduate from school, they hope to get employed with the certificate they have acquired and start earning money. But oftentimes the jobs don’t come quick and sometimes when people are employed, they are paid far below their expectations. What if you’re offered $10m, but all you need to do is to burn your certificate and forget you ever went to school? Read the answers some Nigerians gave Saturday PUNCH I will burn it, $10m is huge Chinedu Odunze Yes, I can burn my certificate for $10m and I won’t regret it. I am a graduate and I have a second class upper, yet I couldn’t get a job. I am now into business. So if someone offers me $10m, I will burn my certificate and I will not be satisfied until it’s turned into ashes. If I convert $10m into naira, it’s a huge sum of money. So what else do I need my certificate for again? Why am I going to school if not for money? Frank Omoyemi What am I going to school for? Why am I spending money on schooling if not to use the degree to make money? I can do anything for money, except rituals and stealing. With what the economy is saying right now, I can burn my certificate to get $10m. If I see someone who will give me such amount of money to burn my certificate, I will not think twice. I will be glad to burn it Ademiloye Nelson Not only will I agree to burn my certificate, I will also burn everything I have acquired that is related to education. What is the point in having a certificate with no money? Our country has so many unemployed youths, including me. Most go into crime, which I can’t go into. So I will accept the offer of $10m and burn my certificate. I’ll burn my certificate, then get it back Adenson Israel I will burn my certificate a million times if I’m offered such money. Why am I gathering all the certificates if not for money? After getting the money, I can still get back the certificate. We have billionaires who didn’t go to school, yet they are being conferred with honorary degrees. What else? I can even buy back the certificate if I need it as long as the school exists. My certificate is worthless when compared to the money Victor Uche Yes, I can burn my certificate for $10m. If I calculate all the money they’ve spent on me from primary school to the university level, it can never be up to that amount. So why would I think twice before burning my certificate? I don’t even think there is any certificate that can earn me that amount in 100 years. My future is worth more than money Solomon Juliet I can’t burn my certificate for $10m because one day, the money will finish. Money can fly away no matter how huge it is. Money is not even a sign of success, but most people think it is. I worked hard for my certificate — I read; in sickness I still attended lectures; my parents spent their resources on me. Thinking of all these, I can’t do such a thing. My future is worth more than the money. Even if I invest the money in a business and it crashes, what will I fall back on? If I work hard, I don’t need to bank my future on ‘sudden’ money. What’s the use of the certificate without money? Ajibade Ayomiposi What is the use of the certificate without money? There are many people without certificates but with plenty money. I can burn my certificate for $10m because it’s a huge sum of money. However, I may feel some regret if I think of the stress I went through in order to acquire the certificate. I’ll use the money to invest in business Oja Temitope I will burn my certificate. $10m is not small money. I will use it to invest in a business. Many people have certificates and yet can’t find a good job. Sometimes, people who don’t have any certificate make much more money than those who went to school. So I will burn my certificate if that’s all it requires to get $10m. My certificate is proof that I went to school Abiodun Owolewa I can’t burn my certificate for any amount or for any reason because it is the only proof that I went to school. For some positions in life, one needs a certificate. Though it is not all of us that would use it to be successful, it is still good to have one. It gives one an edge anywhere one finds himself. When I think about all the stress and struggle I passed through to raise funds for my school fees, burning my certificate would be the last thing I would ever do in my life. The money is more important Ulebor Favour I will burn it fast. I won’t waste time. The money is huge and could last me for a lifetime if properly invested. I could use the money to establish businesses that can make me become prosperous in life. Meanwhile, as for the certificate, if I ever need it again, I could go to the court to swear an affidavit that I graduated from the school and still get it back. http://punchng.com/will-burn-school-certificate-10m-2/ |

Missing 13-year old boy found tied up in his mother's friend's house (See Photos) Be careful people, trust no one for the days are evil. Only in Jehovah God should we trust. The closest to you is the one that knows where and how to betray you. God will always protect his own because even the hair on our head is counted by him. May all frenemies continue to face shame. A woman has been arrested after local vigilante group in Ikorodu, Onyabo caught her for allegedly kidnapping a teenager who had been missing for three days. The boy was found with his mouth and hands tied in the woman’s apartment. According to InsideMainland, the woman was a friend to the victim’s mother. The suspect, who is a resident of Babalola Aroyewun Street, Igbogbo, was apprehended on Saturday, October 22. According to a resident who preferred anonymity, she said that “the boy usually comes to the compound to assist her mother’s friend to fetch water and do other chores. He is a friendly boy who goes about his activities with smiles all over his face. He was declared missing for three days and the case was reported at the Igbogbo Police Station and the Onyabo vigilante group.” The suspect was however arrested on Saturday morning when her neighbours overheard strange voices coming from her flat. The neighbours ran a check but found an empty flat with nothing in it. However, the strange voices continued and a call was placed to the suspect who was away from the house at that point. She, however, denied knowledge of the happenings in her flat. The neighbours informed the Police when some strangers were seen around her flat. The security team rushed to the scene and eventually found the boy with his hands and mouth tied in her flat. http://www.wivestownhallconnection.com/2016/10/missing-13-year-old-boy-found-tied-up.html

Davindal:Young man, again I congratulate you for saving your friend. I did not come to write in favor of the lady or your actions. Just my opinion based on your write up. I'm glad you don't care about ladies, and your experience with us, ladies has given you this confidence to use and dump as you say. Please don't have children or get married, do your best to take care of your mother and sisters. Finally help your friend to get well. What he is passing through right now isn't what money can cure. Just as all men are not alike same goes for ladies. I'll appreciate it if you watch your language when responding to my write up I'm sure your parents thought you better. |
@Op congratulations for helping your friend. You had so much praise for your friend from the beginning of your write up and the opposite for his girl friend, which I assume you never liked her. You wanted to prove a point and struck a convo with her using a different sim card which she declined. You were not satisfied but because of your conclusion about your suspicions and proving your point to show you are a better person, you pushed further, hmmm..... I cant tell much about the character of this lady but something isn't right here. Did you catch her in the act or are these stories you heard about her? Have you considered she might have discussed this convo with a friend who had opted to join and play along to ask where you will meet in order to play a fast one on you also? I feel sorry for your friend cause it is not easy getting over a broken heart. I hope he gets over it with a clear head and right mind set. Sometimes we write what we don't mean and keep silent at the things we really need to say. |
Yeah, I got same message. ![]() |
