Minister of Transportation and former governor of Rivers State, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, has warned the state governor, Mr Nyesom Wike to stop playing politics with the lives of Rivers people, just as he noted that the monorail project belonged to the state and not him (Amaechi). Amaechi’s Media Office in a statement, yesterday, said “We watched with disbelief the recent television interview of Governor Wike, excerpts of which had also been used in some newspapers. It was the typical Wike, twisting, butchering and turning the truth upside down and in most cases telling outright deceptive lies in his failed bid to denigrate, tarnish and rubbish the towering image, person and laudable, landmark achievements of his predecessor and now Minister of Transportation, Mr Amaechi. “Most troubling, was Wike’s propensity, without any qualms whatsoever, to play politics with the safety and security of the lives of Rivers people. This is indeed most worrisome. It is no secret that Wike plays politics with development, the welfare and well-being of Rivers people. But no government should play politics with the safety and security of its citizens like Wike is sadly and shamelessly doing. “On the Rivers Monorail project, Governor Wike said that he will not touch Amaechi’s monorail and that the entire state has told him not to continue with the project. Can someone please tell Wike that the monorail belongs to Rivers State and it’s not Amaechi’s private monorail. Pray, Governor Wike, which Rivers people told you not to touch the monorail project? “Is it the same Rivers people that have consistently praised the project and see it as a catalyst to jump-start the local economy and place the state at the forefront of transport infrastructural development in Africa? Or is Wike aggregating the jaundiced views of the coterie of court-jesters that hang around him daily, as the opinion of the entire people of the state? It is sad, very sad that Wike has elected to play politics with this laudable project that was almost completed before Amaechi left office.” Read more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/03/amaechi-wike-monorail-belongs-rivers-state-not/ |
PORT HARCOURT— RIVERS State Government has described as misleading, reports on the security situation in the state, saying that some of the issues were blown out of proportion. Governor Nyesom Wike spoke at Government House, Port Harcourt, yesterday, when he played host to Canada and United State’s branch of apex Ikwerre body, Ogbakor Ikwerre. The governor said stories depicting the state as unsafe were the handiwork of politicians, who did not mean well for the state. To buttress his point, the governor said multinational companies were going about their businesses in the state, adding that businesses in the state were enjoying robust growth. He said that the various states in the country also had one form of security challenge or another. He also assured that his administration will continue to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people, stressing that projects abandoned by his predecessor that were of value to the people will also get the attention of his government. Meantime, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the state has described the call by Prince Odike, deputy state Chairman of All Progressive Congress, APC, for declaration of a state of emergency in the state as mischievous and a reflection of idle politicians who have been allegedly disengaged from state resources. State Chairman of the party, Mr Felix Obuah, in a statement, yesterday by his media aide, Mr Jerry Needam, also urged Rivers people to ignore the call. The Ondo State Police Command has arrested two siblings who allegedly buried alive two persons – Igbekele Orisabinole and Ogbaro Erinbo. The victims were accused of stealing N130,000 belonging to the suspects’ mother, Mrs. Ogunnuga. The suspects – Omoniyi Alaleran and Oluwaseun Enikuomehin– according to the Police Public Relations Officer of the state command, Mr. Femi Joseph, committed the offence on Omonira Street, Igbokoda, in the Ilaje Local Government Area on March 12, 2016. It was gathered that Ogunnuga lost a sum of N130,000 and accused Erinbo and Orisabunole of stealing the money. She informed her two children, who tortured the duo to release the missing money. The duo reportedly denied commiting the crime, which was not accepted by their accusers. After many hours of torture, the suspects allegedly took the victims inside a bush, dug a pit and pushed them inside it and covered the pit up to their necks. The PPRO explained that the matter was being handled by the Special Investigative Bureau. “We are almost concluding investigation into the matter. The suspects will be charged to court very soon,” the PPRO said. http://www.punchng.com/siblings-bury-two-alive-over-n130000-theft/ |
The Lagos State Government has launched an investigation into an alleged case of child brutality at the Eva Adelaja Girls Secondary School in the Bariga area of the state. PUNCH Metro learnt that a 14-year-old pupil of the school, Ogechi Anyalewechi, was hospitalised after being flogged by the principal of the school and over five other teachers. The victim was said to have been punished after a prefect of the school, identified only as Zainab, complained to the principal that Ogechi returned a slap she gave her for “being rude”. It was learnt that the principal and the teachers also took turns to slap the Senior Secondary School 2 student and also asked the prefect to slap her. A teacher of the school, identified as Mr. Bello, was alleged to have told her to removed her tight (drawers) and flogged her on the buttocks. Ogechi was said to have been treated at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, after the floggings. She told PUNCH Metro that her ordeal started after the prefect challenged her for not carrying a chair. She said, “Last Wednesday, I got to school around 8am. I was asked to take some chairs from a class to a hall where a programme for principals and school teachers would hold later in the day. “The prefect challenged me for not participating, but I explained that I was waiting for my turn to carry the chairs. “She said I was rude to her and ordered me to kneel down. I refused and told her I was sick. She said if I didn’t obey her, she would slap me. I said I didn’t do anything wrong and she couldn’t slap me. She said if I repeated that she would do it, and I repeated it. “She slapped me and out of annoyance, I returned the slap. She then went to report to the principal.” It was learnt that the principal, identified as Mrs. Coker, summoned Ogechi and ordered her to kneel down. The victim alleged that after the principal slapped her four times, other teachers present took turns to assault her as well. “They called the prefect and asked her to slap me in their presence and she did that four times. A teacher, Mr. Balogun, ordered me to remove my tight and he flogged me on the buttocks. “After this, I was asked to sit for my exam in the vice principal’s office. When I was done, the principal gave the VP a letter, saying I should be made to cut some grass afterwards.” It was gathered that although school closed officially at 3pm, the 14-year-old did not return home till 5pm. She was said to have been taken to LASUTH, where she was treated and placed on medication. Ogechi said, “I could not sleep at night. I was in pain and had to lie down on my stomach.” Her mother, Mrs. Esther Anyalewechi, said she reported the matter at the Bariga Police Station, adding that she was disappointed with the reaction of the principal. “She said my child would not become somebody in the future. I asked if she were a mother, would she allow anybody to treat her child that way. All I wanted was just an apology for the assault which landed my daughter in the hospital, but she refused,” she added. The principal and vice principal of the school later went to the station. A police source at the station explained that a group of seven soldiers, led by a brigadier, who claimed to be the husband of the principal, stormed the station. The source said, “All of them were in uniform. They went to see the Divisional Police Officer. The IPO was later forced to abandon the case.” The elder brother of the victim, Joseph, said the family was prepared to sue the government to enforce the fundamental rights of his sister. When the vice principal of the school was contacted for comment, she quickly switched off her phone after our correspondent introduce himself as a journalist from The PUNCH. The principal could not be reached. PUNCH Metro learnt that the case had been brought to the attention of a non-governmental organisation, Project Alert on Violence against Women. The Executive Director of the group, Mrs. Josephine Effah-Chukwuma, said a petition had been written to the deputy governor of the state, the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Education and the tutor general of the zone. Effah-Chukwuma said Ogechi suffered both sexual and physical abuse, urging the state government to mete out appropriate punishments to the culprits. She said, “It is sexual abuse because the report from the girl family says the teacher asked her to remove her tight before the flogging, why didn’t they flog her with her uniform on? We are told that the tight is still with the teacher.” The Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Fela Bank-Olemoh, said the state had started an investigation into the allegeation. He said, “We place value on the dignity of all students in our schools and I want to assure you that we are handling this case with due diligence.” The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, said the permanent secretary of the ministry of education had already taken over the case. http://www.punchng.com/lagos-probes-pupils-floggings-by-principal-teachers/ |

Soldiers on Monday assaulted a motorist, Joy Agboghide, for allegedly obstructing traffic on Forestry Lane, Benin, Edo State. It was learnt that the incident occurred at about 4pm in front of the headquarters of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company. It was learnt that an officer, a Major, was said to have emerged from the premises of the company and instructed the woman to reverse her vehicle in order to ease traffic on the narrow road. Sources said Agboghide, a mother of six, however, explained that she had initially allowed about five vehicles to go due to the indiscriminate parking of vehicles on the road. An argument was said to have ensued between the soldier and the 51-year-old woman, after the army officer insisted that she must reverse her vehicle. The major, who was said to have been angered by the development, returned to the BEDC premises. The source said he later returned with some soldiers said to be attached to the BEDC and allegedly ordered them to beat the woman up. She was said to have been rushed to the Central Hospital in Benin where was receiving treatment as of the time of filing this report. Agboghide, who later spoke to our correspondent, said, “I went to Lagos Street to get some food items. So, I passed through Forestry (Lane) to the road beside former NEPA. As I was going, the driver of the vehicle in front of me and some traders around told me to stop. I stopped and about four vehicles passed. Later, the traders told me to go. “As I moved on, a soldier told me to reverse and I explained that I had waited for some vehicles to pass. But he said, ‘Do you know who you are talking to? Reverse!’ Before I knew it, he used his gun to hit my windscreen. “I came out and asked him what I had done and he said I should wait. He went into the BEDC premises and came out with some soldiers who descended on me. “He said they should clear me off the road. But as he tried to enter his vehicle, I pulled him and told him to pay for the damage done to my car.” Agboghide alleged that she was also assaulted by a woman said to the wife of the officer. She said, “As the man jumped inside his vehicle and tried to drive off, I hit his windscreen. He came down and damaged my windscreen and the rear screen. “Suddenly, he came out with a whip and beat me. The lady inside the vehicle also sprayed tear gas into my eyes.” Spokesman for the 4 Brigade Command of the Nigerian Army, Captain Jonah Unuakhalu, told our correspondent that the officer involved was not in the Army. “He is a Nigerian Air Force officer. But we are investigating,” Unuakhalu said.” http://www.punchng.com/soldiers-beat-woman-damage-her-car-in-edo/ |

The former governor said he would remain as an elder statesman, giving advice to politicians. “I have no presidential ambition or any political position but would remain as an elder statesman, giving advice to politicians,” he said. Daniel said the day he was arraigned in court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission was the worst day of his life. I'm happy for you, taking a step in the right direction. ![]() Relationships of any kind is to help each other's weakness. She may have some underlying pains that tends to trigger this anger, like you said she lost both parents and was abandoned by her brothers and sisters due to change of religion. What type of religion would separate a family? Has she tried to re-unit with them? They are the ones that will still give her out in marriage according to custom. What step has she/u taken to resolve this? She has not enjoyed parental love or that kind of family love? This she found in you. She is lost and frustrated at the same time. You need to talk more about everything and anything. let her know you are ready to listen and not try to solve all her problems. You are now her father and mother. As Christians, your foundation should be in the word of God. There are great prophets of God that lost out in God's Blessings because of anger. Two can only walk together if they agree... You should both go for counseling See a therapist if need be. Think, talk, pray and talk again. I pray God to help you both in taking the right decision. |

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase, has warned Nigerians against employing foreigners as domestic helps. According to him, they are difficult to trace when they abscond with their employers’ property or children. Arase said this on Wednesday at a Mega Town Hall Meeting with stakeholders at the Redemption Camp, Ogun State. The programme tagged, ‘Security Awareness and Personal Workplace Safety’, was organised by the Ogun State branch of the Police Community Relations Committee. The IG, who commended the police and community members for their roles in the rescue of three abducted pupils of the Babington Macaulay Junior Seminary, Ikorodu, Lagos, in was represented by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 2, Mr. Bala Hassan, said it is easier for the apprehend a fleeing Nigerian domestic help than a foreign one. He said, “We do not have anything against people from Ghana or Cotonou but if you want to employ domestic workers, ensure that they are Nigerians so that when they escape (with your property), you know where to find him or her. You can even meet with your Divisional Police Officer to know whether he or she had committed a crime elsewhere before you employ one.” The IG added, “People will travel for the Easter. It is not a must you get to your destination on the same day. When night falls, you can park your car and sleep in a hotel. Easter is like Christmas and I know Nigerians like gifts. Do not open your door to anybody that brings a hamper. It could contain an explosive device. Do not give criminal opportunities. Do not leave a ladder close to your residence. Children will also visit recreational places. Parents should watch over them so that they will not be tricked with ice creams.” The guest speaker, Mr. Obafemi Obadare, called on the authorities to reconsider decentralising the police http://www.punchng.com/ig-warns-against-foreign-domestic-helps/ |
An economic retreat convened by the present administration to offer solutions to the current economic challenges facing Nigeria will hold on Monday and Tuesday next week. The retreat, being put together by the National Economic Council, which has the 36 state governors as members and Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo as chairman, will hold in the Presidential Villa, Abuja. According to a statement on Thursday by the Senior Special Assistant to the Vice-President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande, President Muhammadu Buhari will deliver the keynote address during the retreat’s opening session on Monday. Akande said Osinbajo, being the chairman of NEC, which is an advisory body to the President, would preside over the retreat with governors from the 36 states of the federation attending. Others expected at the meeting, according to the statement, are the Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele; and the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Udo Udoma, among other top government functionaries. The statement reads, “The objective of the NEC retreat is to provide a forum for in-depth discussions by NEC members of the policy actions that the states and the Federal Government can consider in order to stimulate local production, cut costs and enhance public revenues among other measures to stimulate the economy. “Contrary to suggestions, the retreat is not an emergency national economic conference. “The idea was mooted at the last regular NEC meeting in January, where members requested an intensive session to review economic trends and evolve strategies to cope.” The retreat, which was earlier fixed for March 10 and 11, was later put off to allow for more preparations on the part of the organisers. Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, had called on the President to summon an emergency economic meeting to chart a course to save the country from further drift. Soyinka, who made the call when he visited the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in Abuja, had said experts and consumers should be invited to the meeting. “The President should call an emergency economic conference, with experts to be invited; consumers, producers, labour unions, university experts, professors, etc. I think we really need an emergency economic conference, a rescue operation, bringing as many heads as possible together to plot the way forward,” Soyinka had said. Meanwhile, Buhari said the current economic crisis, plaguing the nation, was a blessing in disguise. Buhari said this at the opening ceremony of the International Islamic Conference on Peace and Nation Building in Abuja on Thursday. The President said through the hardship, Nigerians would be able to come up with ideas that would in turn lead to development. He said, “The global economic challenges the world is grappling with today might well turn out to be a blessing for us in Nigeria, because it will stimulate the latent economic opportunities that we have left untapped for decades. “Poverty breeds disaffection, which in turn leads to crime and lawlessness, including confrontation against the state. To checkmate this, we must work hard to lift our economy, engage our youths and rebuild infrastructure.’’ Buhari lamented the level of official corruption in the nation, adding that it led to many years of hardship for Nigerians. He, however, promised to do everything possible to curb the menace. While declaring the conference open, the President commended the Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’a Wa Iqamatis Sunna and the Muslim World League for the event at a time when the nation was grappling with insecurity. Buhari, who described Boko Haram as a mindless terrorist organisation, said the Federal Government was winning the fight against insurgency. He said once the war was over, the government would commission a sociological study to determine the origin, the remote and immediate causes of the movement, its sponsors, its international connections if any, to ensure that measures were taken to prevent a resurgence. The President added, “The tragic paradox of the global insurgency situation is that most of the atrocities committed by various insurgents all over the world today are being carried out mainly by people who pretend to be Muslims, yet most of the victims and casualties are equally Muslims. “No religion approves of such heinous crimes against humanity; definitely not Islam or Christianity, the two to which most Nigerians belong. “Religious leaders must intensify their efforts to send out the real teachings of their religion in order to counter the diabolical ideology that motivates the insurgent elements.” http://www.punchng.com/buharis-economic-retreat-starts-on-monday/ |

“We will deal decisively with all sponsors of violence. I have given the security services clear directives in this regard. We will show that violence in any form will no longer be tolerated before, during and after the elections.” With these belated but reassuring words, President Muhammadu Buhari signified the determination of the Federal Government to ensure that the rerun legislative polls in Rivers State billed for tomorrow will be conduct free, fair and safe manner. We want to see these words matched with concrete action during these rerun elections in which many State House of Assembly, Senate and House of Representatives posts rendered vacant at the Election and Appeal Tribunals will be contested for by registered political parties. In readiness for the elections, the Nigerian Police have sent the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 6, Mr Baba Bolanta, to take charge in addition to three Commissioners of Police already drafted. The Police have also mobilised 6,000 regulars as well as 16 units of the Police Mobile Force (MOPOL) who will join men and women of the Rivers State Police Command to provide security. The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Commission (NSCDC) have also deployed 2,000 personnel. These and other underground security and military officials were mustered in view of the tension and violence that pervaded the run up to, and during, the 2015 general elections as well as the build-up to the current rerun. The 2015 elections in the state were overshadowed by unprecedented spates of killings. For instance, a fact finding mission led by the former Chairman of the Nigerian Commission on Human Rights (NCHR), Prof Chidi Odinkalu, disclosed that 97 people were killed between November 2014 and April 2015. While the All Progressives Congress. APC alleged that 32 of its members have already been killed since the date for the rerun polls was fixed, Governor Nyesom Wike, who launched a special security programme recently, however, insisted that those killed were cult members who died during clashes between rival gangs. We call on all stakeholders, especially Governor Wike and the leader of the APC in the state, Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi, to stop their sabre-rattling and lead by example. All political parties must cooperate with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the security agencies for the elections to succeed. We urge the INEC and security agencies to do their jobs professionally and not see themselves as agents of vested political interests so as not to encourage anyone to resort to “self-help” and compromise the safety of voters, electoral officials and innocent citizens. The Rivers rerun polls must be free, fair, credible and peaceful Read more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/03/621635/ |
