The panel investigating the
allegations levelled against governor
of Adamawa state, Murtala Nyako
and deputy governor, Mr. Bala
Ngilari, by the state house of
assembly concluded its sitting on
Saturday without the governor and his
deputy.
The seven-man panel constituted by
the acting chief judge of the state,
Justice Amnrose Mammadi, began its
sitting on Friday and adjourned till
Saturday, following the absence Nyako
and Ngilari.
On Friday, the panel listened to
counsels of the assembly as they
tendered exhibits such as video clips
that the men under investigation were
to defend.
But at the resumed sitting on
Saturday, neither the governor nor his
deputy showed up.
After waiting in vain for the
representatives of the governor and
his deputy, the panel watched a video
clip tendered as ‘Exhibit Y’.
It also cross examined the only
witnessed presented by the House, Mr
Wafarninyi Theman, chairman of the
house committee chairman on public
account.
Counsel to the assembly, Mr. Hussaini
Maidawa and Mr Leonard Nzadon, led
evidence and concluded their
respective presentations.
The counsel urged the panel to take
their applications against the governor
and deputy governor as a proven case
of the allegations of gross misconduct
raised in view of the absence of any
contrary argument.
Responding, chairman of the panel,
Malam Buba Kaigama, said the panel
would take its time to objectively
examine the presentations and other
evidences provided by the assembly
and present its position on a later
date.
Kaigama announced that although the
respondents failed to appear, the
panel had concluded its assignment
having heard from the assembly, being
one of the parties involved in the

The federal government yesterday revealed that
identity cards belonging to some top politicians
as well as party materials were found in the Boko
Haram terrorists’ base in Balmo Forest in the
Darazo local government area of Bauchi State. It
said that the items recovered during the last
operations carried out by security forces to
dislodge terrorists from their forest bases had
linked some politicians and political parties to
terrorism.
The coordinator of the National Information
Centre, Mr Mike Omeri, disclosed this while
briefing journalists on government’s efforts
towards the rescue of the abducted Chibok girls.
Omeri, who was silent on the details of the
development, however vowed that the federal
government will reveal the names of the
politicians and parties involved, as the matter is
still under investigation.
Omeri further said, “Investigation is still ongoing
to further unravel the identity of others that may
have been involved and as soon as it is
completed, we shall reveal the names of the
culprits and the political parties.” He said, “Some
politicians are currently being investigated
following their link with terrorist activities in the
forest.”
He said that the government would not condone
the involvement of politicians in security matters.
Speaking on the release of the abducted Chibok
girls, Omeri said efforts are being made to bring
the girls back safely. He, however, said the
details cannot be revealed for now owing to the

Institute of Nigeria ( FCMCIN ) , Rauf
Aregbesola has a wealth of experience
garnered through wide exposure in the
private sector , such as the Nigerian
External Telecommunications, now
renamed Nigerian Telecommunications Ltd .
and Lagos Airport Hotel , before
establishing his own Engineering Services
Company , Aurora Nigeria Limited , in 1986.
The company had handled numerous major
projects for both government and private
organisations in most States of the
Federation.
The politician
Politically, Rauf has been no less a
phenomenon . His involvement in politics
dates back to his undergraduate days
when he was Speaker of the Students ’
Parliament ( 1977 /78) , The Polytechnic,
Ibadan , and the President of the Black
Nationalist Movement ( 1978- 1980 ) . He
was also an active supporter of other
progressive students ’ movements
nationwide, which earned him , for instance,
the life membership of National
Association of Technological Students . In
June 1990 , he became an elected delegate
to the SDP Inaugural Local Government
Area Congress. In July of the same year,
he was also a delegate to its first National
Convention in Abuja .
Rauf Aregbesola , as a pro - democracy and
human rights activist , was a major
participant in the demilitarisation and pro -
democracy struggles of the 1990s . Prior to
his appointment as the Lagos State
Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure
( 1999 -2007 ) , he was Director of the Bola
Ahmed Tinubu Campaign Organisation
( BATCO) , which engineered the electoral
victory of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as
the Governor of Lagos State in 1999 . He
performed similar feat using the platform
of Independent Campaign Group ( ICG) to
ensure the re- election of Asiwaju for a
second term in office.
The Commissioner
Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola acquitted himself
excellently as Commissioner for Works and
Infrastructure in Lagos State between 1999
and 2007 with the strength of his
commitment to selfless service . His
diligence, sincerity and tirelessness in the
administration of the vast Ministry of
Works and Infrastructure , as well as
supervision of the Public Works
Corporation and State Electricity Board,
has been acknowledged as being
responsible for the outstanding success
recorded by the Tinubu administration ,
especially in road rehabilitation /
maintenance and street lighting ; and
achievement that solidly laid the
foundation for the actualisation of Lagos
as the model of development and good
governance as being sustained by Governor
Babatunde Raji Fashola today . Indeed, it is
a known fact that he is one of the brains
behind the infrastructural re - engineering
that has now resulted in the
transformation of social amenities in Lagos
State .
Some of the novel achievements and
innovations due to Aregbesola ’ s visionary
qualities and enterprise include the
redefinition and application of new
aesthetic standards to ministry blocks and
offices as corporate workplaces ; vision and
mission definition , annual staff retreats
and modern manpower capacity building
trainings; introduction of facility
management practices ; pioneering
achievements in PR ( ministry journal ) and
IT ( website ) operation; Pioneering Private/
Public Sector Partnership Ventures ; Award-

The believer and advocate of the rule of
law
Aregbesola ’ s belief in the sanctity of the
rule of law is exemplary.
Engr. Rauf Aregbesola , on the platform of
the then Action Congress ( AC ) contested
for the Governorship of Osun State in the
April 2007 elections , and won . To be so
declared, however , took close to four years
of what must go down as one of the most
titanic mandate recovery legal battles of all
time , and a moment for the manifestation
of the omnipotence of the Almighty God
and his steadfastness in support of those
who rely on him.
Having gone through the tribunal of first
instance, an appeal and a retrial tribunal ,
the second appeal court, delivering
judgment on October 26, 2010, declared
Aregbesola governor and ordered he be
sworn in the next day.
Ogbeni Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola , since
assuming office as Governor of the State of
Osun on October 27 , 2010 , has redefined
the meaning of governance in the public
sector , not just with symbolic posturing ,
but real and sustainable interventions that
will presently enhance the quality of life of
everyone that lives or works in the State of
Osun . Rebranding of the state as the ipinle
Omoluabi ( State of the Virtuous ) started
from himself, adopting the title Ogbeni ,
simply Mister, in deference to the singular

Akpos was arrested in Lagos
by a group of Lastma officials for driving on
the BRT Lane. His car was fined N5,000. Upon
all the begging and pleadings, the LASTMA
officials refused to release the car. Akpos
asked; Okay, may i know where you are
towing my car to?. One of the LASTMA officials
replied; we are taking it to Alausa. Ha Ha Ha
Ha Ha….. Akpos laughed. All the
LASTMA officials were surprised and paid
attention to him, wanting to know why he
was laughing. Immediately, Akpos
brought out his phone and started speaking;
“Abu Qaqa Ina Kwana!” (Good morning in
Hausa). ‘No sir!’ “Not less than 30minutes
before it will explode!. The car has been
arrested…..” “Only 20 out of those new
bombs are inside the car.” “They are taking
the car to the targeted destination, “Alausa”.
I’m coming back to Sokoto alive now. “Thank
You Sir”. Greet other faithfuls for me. He said
and rounded off his imaginary call. He looked
around, no LASTMA officials was in sight. He
entered his car and sped off, saying; shege,

Senator Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja is a big name
who made a fortune in business. Despite his
status, the high chief of Ibadan, however, lives an
incredibly simple lifestyle such that an
unsuspecting onlooker would place him among
peasant farmers.
To further justify our curiosity, the former
governor of Oyo State was described, during
Sunday Vanguard’s visit to his Bodija GRA,
Ibadan home on Tuesday, 10 December, 2013, by
one of his loyalists as an enigma in politics.
Ladoja made his money through many ways: an
engineer, a farmer whose food crops are sold not
only to the people of Oyo State but also beyond,
a shipping company owner and generally a
business mogul. His lifestyle falls below his
worth. A sampler: A friend who visited him had
an experience to share on how Ladoja’s simplicity
confused him while trying to locate his house on
arrival.
The man, another money bag, came from Port
Harcourt where he lived. Personal Assistant on
Domestic Affairs to the former governor told the
rest of the story: “The man’s home in Port
Harcourt is like the Presidential Villa. He had
phoned Ogathat he was coming to meet him in
Ibadan. The address was given to him and, as he
landed at the Ibadan airport, he drove straight to
Ondo Street where Ogalives. He found it difficult
to locate the house.
“We had to come outside and stood on the road
in front of the house for the visiting friend to
know that the place he had passed several times
was former Governor Ladoja’s residence. He told
us that the modest nature of the house confused
him and that he had expected something
uncommon,” narrated Alhaji Mutiu.
Whereas a sitting governor would amass cars
and property, Ladoja, it was gathered, right from
his days in office as governor, decided to live a
life of simplicity.
‘I feel comfortable living a simple life’
Even when the former governor dresses, most of
the time he is clad in Ankara Ladoja, who
admitted that people called him Baba Alankara
due to his choice of Ankara dresses, told Sunday
Vanguard the story of how his tour of Benin
Republic, with Chief Olusegun Obasanjo when
both leaders were governor and President
respectively, influenced the coming of Ankara
dress into his style.
He said, “I have been wearing Ankara particularly
when I was governor of Oyo State and Obasanjo
was President of Nigeria. We both travelled to
Benin Republic. Obasanjo was wearing Ankara
and I remember the President of that country at
that time, Kereku, telling his people, ‘Look at the
President of the greatest nation in this region.
He is wearing Ankara. You people have been
wasting your money buying imported fabric. His
country is rich and he himself is rich yet he
chooses to live simple by wearing what is
produced in his country.” That was when I saw
the sense in what he said and I decided to stick
to my wearing of Ankara manufactured in Nigeria.
“But all along, dressing so gorgeously does not
really make you a big or important person. I feel
more comfortable dressing the simple way I do.”
Asked how he was coping living a simple lifestyle
despite his billions, Ladoja said, jovially, “What
does that mean? Do you think I have a billion
naira in my account (laughs)? You see, there are
certain things to which you don’t really have to
attach too much importance. You can’t sleep in
more than one room. If I want to eat, I don’t eat
more than my stomach can take. I do not see
myself in the light of what you are talking about.
If you have money, what matters is how much
you spend the money to improve the lives of
others. What is important as far as I am
concerned is to use my money to create
opportunities for other people to grow. That is
the way I look at life rather than flaunting your
wealth recklessly to prove your status. I don’t
think it is good enough.”
Ladoja’s home is a place where many people visit
without being looked down upon. Bird are not left
out as the residence is home to many parrots,
ostrich, among others. As the interview started,
some of the birds shrieked so loud the noise
interrupted the session. What did the owner
(Ladoja) say?
He said: “They don’t know why you are here.
That is why they are shrieking.” Then the
interview resumed. “So, the fact that you are a
billionaire is not a reason for you to be
extravagant or to begin to acquire what you don’t
need. God has given the money to all of us that
have it to better the lives of those who do not
have.”
Lunch
Journalists are always at home with Ladoja.
No wonder, despite all he suffered in the hands of
his immediate successor, Otunba Adebayo Alao-
Akala, and incumbent Governor Abiola Ajimobi, he
remains in the good books of the media. He is
jovial, accommodating and simple. Just before
the last visit, he had put this reporter by his side
in his own car, introduced him to the top aides
in his entourage and drove with him through the
streets of Ibadan ending up treating him, among
other people, to lunch in his residence.
Tuesday December 10, 2013 was another day of
simplicity display by the former governor, who
never hid his soft spot for Vanguard. “Vanguard is
my own paper and Uncle Sam is a good friend.
Say me well to him any time you see him,” he
said. The assignment by Sunday Vanguard was
to do a 24-Hour Report on him. But the former
governor, through his top aide, Lanre Ogundipe,
wanted to accommodate other journalists who
had requested for an interview.
The Sunday Vanguard’s reporter was still far
away, on his way to Ibadan from Lagos, when a
call from Ladoja’s residence to his phone came.
“Bashir, where are you? Are you nearby? Okay, all
is set; we will wait for you,” the voice said. The
top aide of the former governor stood at the gate
to receive me and led me, through the line of
people sitting in the compound, into the presence
of Oga.
The Ibadan based farmer stretched his hand for a
handshake and the interview commenced.
‘I doubt if PDP will survive crisis’
On politics, Ladoja started by giving an update of
membership registration exercise of his party,
Accord. He also spoke on the PDP would not
survive its crisis, the travails of Rivers State
Governor Rotimi Amaechi, why the INEC’s
Attahiru Jega must not fail Nigerians come 2015
and why the reconciliation between him and his
erstwhile deputy, Adebayo Alao-Akala failed.
His words, “The Accord membership registration
exercise was a success. Actually the way it went,
people that were registered appeared to have
done so because of the interest they have in our
party because we have up to 10,000 members
per ward. So, it was a successful exercise and
there has been tremendous progress.”
On the PDP crisis, he said, “When we founded the
PDP, our intention was to make it a popular party,
but, along the line, in 1999, the party was
hijacked by some undemocratic forces. But
somehow we had been managing everything. The
President at that time wanted to be the leader of
the party whereas our intention was to have a
party that will be controlled by the people, not the
party controlling the people.
That is what Tukur is trying to do, to restore the
normal hierarchy in the party and so the
governors, who felt they should control the party
but were not allowed to continue to control the
party, started to make trouble with the chairman.
That is the cause of the entire crisis you see
going on in the party and I do not see the PDP
being able to survive the crisis.
Founding objectives
“The PDP has totally lost focus. It has
abandoned its founding objectives and the party
is now peopled with politicians who are opposed
to the principles of democracy. Tukur came in to
correct these ills but I think he is seeing more
than he expected. How far can he alone go
amidst those people who are in the party only for
their self aggrandizement at the expense of the
Nigerian people? It is difficult. May be God will
be kind to us one day such that we can have
democrats in the majority in the party because
whatever they do largely affects the country.”
Despite the controversy which dogged his
leadership of the Independent National Electoral
Commission, INEC, particularly due to the hitches
recorded in the electoral umpire’s handling of the
Anambra State governorship election, Ladoja said
Professor Attahiru Jega was still not only credible
but also that he means well for Nigeria.
The former governor likened his impeachment in
2006 to the current travails of Amaechi, stressing
that governance must have stopped in the state
since the beginning of the crisis as the Rivers
governor would be battling to save his political
career.
He said the recent partnership between him and
his successor, Alao-Akala, was not working
because the latter was not willing to leave the
PDP to join Accord.
“Alao-Akala approached me to ask if we could
work together. We did not even talk about what
happened in the past. Yesterday is gone. We can
only learn lessons from it to plan for tomorrow.
All I want is to work for the benefit of Oyo State.
We set up a committee but personal interests
changed many things. Bayo (Alao-Akala) is not
ready to get out of PDP due to the privileges the
party enjoys. Our party, Accord, does not have
any privilege to offer. As far as I am concerned,
our doors are open,”Ladoja said.
“PDP has factions and we cannot concentrate on
only one of the factions while others are moving
and the Alao-Akala group is not showing enough
commitment. We know what we want. Our doors
are open at all times to whoever wants to work
with us or join us.”
‘Ajimobi is a fake dreamer’
The former governor took on Oyo State Governor
Abiola Ajimobi, who recently described him as a
dreamer. Ladoja admitted dreaming but that
while he was a real and positive dreamer in a way
that transformed Oyo State infrastructure,
education, health and agriculture during his tenure
of office, Ajimobi is a fake dreamer, whose
purported dream for the people of the state never

Where are the closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras that purportedly gulped $470 million in the Federal Capital Territory? Questions about their existence and effectiveness within Abuja are being asked, as bombing of the capital city at will by Boko Haram insurgents has not abated.
Security experts and residents have at different times tagged the project dead on arrival and expressed doubts that the cameras ever worked. In several reports done by LEADERSHIP, the federal government had been called to question over the functionality of the cameras.

A Federal High Court in Abuja had recently granted an ex-parte application, seeking an order of mandamus to compel the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to probe the controversial contract awarded to Chinese company, ZTE Corporation by the federal government.
It was also reported recently that the presidency following the failure of the CCTVs to contribute in the fight against insurgency had turned down a request by the Ministry of Police Affairs to pay additional N3billion to the contractor handling the project.

LEADERSHIP findings following the blast that rocked the EMAB Plaza in Wuse II on Wednesday afternoon, which left at least 24 people dead, show that if truly the CCTVs existed around the busy shopping complex, the suspected bombers would have been identified by now.
A senior police officer who spoke under condition of anonymity told LEADERSHIP weekend that only a few of the CCTV cameras are currently working. The reason for the breakdown of the cameras, according to him, includes lack of maintenance as well as power failure. “The truth is that some of them are not working. Definitely, not all of them can work. Some were faulty from day one. Others may suffer power failure. Moreover, not all parts of Abuja, even within the metropolis, are covered,” the source said.

The officer also pointed out that the terrorists always try to avoid areas where there are visible CCTVs. “Terrorists are very intelligent crooks. When they want to select their target, they select places where the eyes of the camera will not come. That’s where you hear things like CCTV cameras serving as deterrent. If they want to strike in Abuja I’m sure they will select their target away from the CCTVs,” the officer said.
Also, the coordinator of the National Information Centre, Mr Mike Omeri, while giving an update on the abduction of the Chibok schoolgirls and the fight against insurgency, collaborated LEADERSHIP findings when he revealed that the FCT lacked adequate CCTV to monitor activities in the metropolis and called on private organisations and public-spirited individuals to install the CCTV in their premises.

“The minister of FCT has said they are working. He said they are working on improving them. CCTV is not everywhere in the city; that is why we are calling on citizens to install CCTV and that is one way they can contribute to the fight against terrorism,” Omeri said.

he coordinator, who is also the director-general of the National Orientation Agency, NOA, said the situation in the country demanded that everyone cooperate with the security agencies to rid the country of insurgents. He said though the CCTV cameras within the city are working, they are not in some parts of the city.

Experts express doubts over the functionality of Abuja CCTV
Meanwhile, security experts have expressed doubts over the operations of the several CCTV cameras installed in Abuja. Some of them who spoke to LEADERSHIP Weekend yesterday doubted the functionality of the CCTV in the capital city.
A former director of State Security Service (SSS), Mr Mike Ejiofor, was of the view that most of those installed in Abuja are not functioning.

“From what we have seen, I doubt if the installed cameras are really working. We had up to three bombings now and we have not been told of any outcome from investigations from the cameras. When incidents like this happens, the cameras are supposed to pick up people who are involved in the crime but, so far, I don’t know whether we have that facility or the existing ones are really functioning,” he said.

Also, a former commissioner of police in the FCT, Mr Lawrence Alobi, while responding to LEADERSHIP Weekend, said the importance of CCTV camera cannot be overemphasised in combating crimes. The ex-police boss questioned the sincerity of those who handled the installation of CCTV in Abuja.

“The CCTV in Abuja, how functional are they? Who awarded the contracts? Are they functioning? Where are they located? How effective are they? What has been achieved from them and when were they installed? Are they CCTVs being maintained? These are the questions we should be asking,” he said.
He also urged the federal government to come up with a policy of making all offices, businesses both public and private install CCTV cameras to check crimes in the country. He reminded all that the terrorists who bombed Boston in the United Stated were apprehended through a CCTV installed in a private restaurant.
“If it can be replicated in Nigeria, it will go a long way in helping us to checkmate insurgency in Nigeria,” Alobi said.

As the 9 August governorship election
in Osun State draws near, the leading
governorship candidates, incumbent
Governor, Rauf Aregbesola of the All
Progressives Congress, APC, and Iyiola
Omisore of the Peoples Democratic
Party, PDP, are locked in a war of
words over who has the better
credentials to run the state.
While Aregbesola lambasted Omisore at
a campaign rally in Ikirun in Ifelodun
Local Government Area of the State,
warning him not to over-step his
boundary, Omisore fired back at the
governor, describing him as a half-
educated person.
Aregbesola also boasted that Omisore
was not a threat to him in any way,
adding that ‘as Aregbesola, I have come
to rebuild the state for another four
years.’
The governor said at the rally that he
had not completed his mission in the
state and told Omisore to behave well
before, during and after the election.
He threatened that Omisore would face
the full wrath of the law if he
threatened the peace of the state.
Aregbesola also said he needed another
four years to consolidate APC’s hold on
Osun State and send PDP packing from
the state at the end of his second term
in 2018.
Responding to Aregbesola, Omisore’s
aide, Diran Odeyemi, dismissed the
governor’s threat as empty and of no
effect, adding that Aregbesola could not
equate himself with Omisore in any
way and that the governor was half-
educated for him to have made those
remarks.
Following the victory of PDP’s
governorship candidate in the Ekiti
State election last Saturday, Omisore,
the Osun PDP governorship candidate,
has been upbeat about his chances of
defeating Aregbesola in August.
Other PDP stalwarts have equally
boasted about reclaiming Osun and
other Southwest States, including Lagos,
from APC in August and during the
2015 general elections.

Everybody was surprised when Michael Essien
handed the captain's armband to John Obi Mikel
on Sunday.
Even Jose Mourinho admitted after the game
that by right Ashley Cole should have received it
when the Ghanaian was substituted.
But Mikel and Cole were both signed by
Mourinho in July 2006 and it's clear that the
former, rather than the latter, will play the more
crucial part in a Chelsea title bid.
During the past seven-and-a-half years, since
signing as a 19-year-old, Mikel has matured
immensely.
He's 26 at the moment - 27 in April - and
approaching the peak of his career.
Everybody was even more surprised, on Sunday,
when Mikel scored; his header was only his
fourth Chelsea goal, arriving in his 300th game.
Mikel is the fourth non-British player to reach
that total for Chelsea, behind undisputed club
legends Petr Cech (459 appearances), Didier
Drogba (341) and Gianfranco Zola (312).
He has been consistently selected since he
joined, by no less than eight managers.
Mourinho, Hiddink, Ancelotti and the rest can't
all be wrong.
And yet Mikel still divides opinion among Chelsea
supporters. Many chide him if he ever misplaces
a pass and wonders what he adds to the team.
Perhaps this is a hangover from his early, ill-
disciplined days, where he would lunge in rashly
for tackles and pick up red cards.
The transfer itself was controversial; he had
signed for Manchester United from Lyn Oslo, but
Chelsea had agreed a deal with his agent.
A press conference where Mikel sported a Red
Devils' shirt only clouded the matter and after
lengthy legal wrangles, Chelsea eventually
emerged with their prize - at a cost of £4million
to Lyn and £12m to United.
Subsequently, Lyn director Morgan Andersen was
convicted of fraud and Chelsea issued a High
Court Claim against him and the club, to try and
recoup the money.
The matter was settled out of court,
confidentially, but it likely means that Chelsea
paid less than £16m for the defensive midfielder
- a pittance given his service over the years.
It did not appear that way at first though;
despite Mourinho putting his faith in Mikel,
playing him 42 times in his debut season in
England, the player's attitude was not quite
right.
He was late to training a handful of times and on
the pitch some of his decision making left plenty
to be desired.
Mikel was booked nine times and sent off twice
in 2006-07, and had two reds the following
season with eight bookings (39 games). He
hasn't been red carded since, and now averages
seven yellow cards a season.
As his discipline improves, his awareness of the
game and his surroundings increases as well. Or
perhaps it's the other way around.
Mikel is composed - he can receive the ball
under pressure from several opposition players,
drawing them in, before sliding it along to a
team-mate in a better position.
This draws criticism that he can only pass
sideways or backwards, but if Chelsea are trying
to keep possession those balls are crucial.
He is a player that Chelsea's defence can trust
to come deep and sit in amongst them if needed,
someone who never hides and will always make
himself available for a pass.
You notice when Mikel does make a mistake or
misplace a pass, because it's so rare for him to
do so.
Mikel is the best screen in front of the defence
that Chelsea have - and is one of the best in the
world at this role.
Ramires makes plenty of tackles but when he's
left as the most defensive player in the Blues'
midfield, they can look exposed.
Following in the master's - Makelele - footsteps
was always going to be difficult but some
Chelsea supporters may not appreciate what
Mikel offers until it is gone.
As you will know, in his youth, Mikel used to be
an attacking midfielder. Mourinho saw the
potential for him to play as an anchorman and
deployed him there from the start.
It does lead people to wonder why he hasn't
contributed more goals and assists, but given
his role in the side it's safety first for Mikel.
However, given his aerial prowess, he should
have scored more goals from set piece
situations, like the one against Derby County,
rising to nod home Willian's free kick.
Andersen had stated, during the transfer debacle:
'Alex Ferguson said to me that Mikel would be
the new Roy Keane and he was offered a
contract that was even better than the one they
gave Cristiano Ronaldo when he came to the
club.'
Perhaps a weakness is his speed; Mikel is not
the quickest, and, infrequently, still throws
himself into tackles which he might not be able
to win.
Mikel is also a big game player. His finest
performance to date for the club came in the
Champions League final, against Bayern Munich,
the greatest night in Chelsea's history.
He was arguably man of the match on that day,
although Didier Drogba's brilliant equaliser and
cup-winning penalty kick overshadowed him on
that day.
That's often the story for Mikel. A quiet, under-
appreciated but crucial part of a trophy-winning
side.

The final shortlist for the African footballer of the
year has been drawn with one of the trio set to be
named on January 9 in Lagos
Nigeria’s John Obi Mikel will go head to head
against Cote D’Ivoire pair Yaya Toure and Didier
Drogba for the Caf African Footballer of the Year
award to be announced at a gala in Lagos on
January 9.
The trio emerged finalists for the award after Caf
pruned the list of 10 players on Monday. Those
dropped include Nigerian trio of Vincent Enyeama,
Emmanuel Emenike and Ahmed Musa, Egyptian
veteran Mohamed Aboutreika, Burkinabe
midfielder Jonathan Pitroipa, Ghana’s Asamoah
Gyan and Gabon’s Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang.
First time nominee Mikel will attempt to unseat
reigning player of the year Toure and former
winner Drogba. Both Ivoirians have won the
award twice, with Yaya hoping to make it three
wins on a spin.
In a year where national team football accolades
will be key to the award, Mikel should expect to
get a favourable look in by the coaches of the 53
national associations that make up the voting
pool.
The Chelsea midfielder led Nigeria to Africa Cup
of Nations title in February 2013, helping the

Accident In enugu
It has been learnt that the elder brother of
Chelsea star, John Mikel Obi, Ebele Obi was
involved in a ghastly motor accident on
Monday.
According to the former Rangers player, he was in
Enugu to see his fiancée and during a drive across
the town his Toyota Camry Spyder had a head-on
collision with another car.
He said he thanked God that he avoided a major
damage as a result of the disaster.
"I had an accident this morning in Enugu, it
