PoliticsRe: Clement Onyemelukwe: 'Father Of Electricity’ In Nigeria Died At 86 (Photos) by shevi4mb(m): 10:20am On Jun 23, 2020
kikero:
Most of the grid was expanded in the 1970's...after the war.

Also the reason why our power system does not work is simple. We run it as a socialist enterprise, not as a capitalist enterprise.

Look at GSM. When GSM came to Nigeria, Obasanjo allowed them to exploit us well well. They came, and they charged us heavily for phone call, and bad service (I can recall when I got a repeated call from Lagos from a number I knew not between 9-10 pm in 2004...when I was trying to study for heaven's sake!)..and used the money to build up our structures.

Meanwhile for power, we 1) put it under government control from the word go. 2) charged bills that were kept low for the masses 3) overexpanded the grid for political purposes (people in the rural areas got power) 4) and then most Nigerians refused to pay for power. Between the polticiasation of power, and the fact that it was being not run as a profit making enterprise, the amount of cash needed to make things better wasn't enough.

Infact today, power is not run as a profit making enterprise. Discos and Gencos cannot set prices, prices are set by NBET....which means that all the DISCOS have been losing money since 2014. (and one even gave up in 2018...because they could no longer run at a loss). The grid is overexpanded. Banks and other financing angencies cannot give loans to the power sector. People are refusing to pay for power.

Yes, maybe we should have kept the man in office...but he won't have guaranteed power. The same problems would have happened, because power in Nigeria is not run for profit, and because Nigerians expect power for free.

Modified...

Thanks for all the replies.

From the replies, people are convinced that power should be 'very cheap' in Nigeria. The problem is, we are not earning enough from oil (and agriculture is not a potential money maker, no matter what people try to tell you)...so the only way to earn money for the power sector is by running it like a business.

Also, we need lots of money (one estimate put it at $900billion over 30 years...that's 30billion a year on power. Meanwhile our budget this year isn't even up to that). That's why we have to remove any price controls.

Before you abuse me, I should mention I lean socialist. I wish we could pay as low as N1000 per month for power, and N30 per liter for fuel. But that's not possible. DISCOS and GENCOS are private companies that employ thousands of Nigerians and if we don't pay enough for power, they won't have the money to make things better, and even pay their staff.

(Disclaimer=I don't work for the DISCOS or GENCOS. Until 3 years ago, I was paying estimated billing)
Your type is rare in Nigeria....but i doubt if they will even reason with you...
EducationNigerian King Builds School With No School Fees, Free Hostel, Free Food, And Eve by shevi4mb(op): 9:28am On Jun 05, 2020
Do you know this school? Abolarin College in Oke-Ila, Osun State. The students there pay NO school fees; enjoy free hostel, free food, free internet, free uniform, free laptop for every child, and 24 hours power supply; and all these expenses are paid by the town’s king. What is the most shocking is that the king teaches too in the school.

What makes this school remarkable is that one major criteria for getting admitted in is being poor. If your parents are rich, you cannot get admission. Unlike other schools, Abolarin College wants poor kids who are very brilliant. If you are poor but brilliant, the king will admit you!

The king believes poor brilliant kids should also be given an equal opportunity to become something in life- so that the future does not belong only to those born with silver spoons in their mouth. The king himself has a law degree and masters in law- and he also teaches in the school.

From what we gathered, the king has only one wife. Obviously, he is not using the money of the kingdom to accumulate wives or properties; instead he is investing it in the education of future leaders while he aims to reduce the burden of illiteracy in the society. For him, it doesn’t matter the religion, it is not about nepotism, neither is it restricted to Yoruba children nor only children from Oke Ila; it is about any less privileged child anywhere who is willing to be educated. That is why the only criteria for admission is poverty and brilliance.

Many of those kids previously hawked pepper, sachet water, fruits etc. Some came from farms where all they did was work under the hot sun weeding and planting. Many are orphans, hawkers, child labourers, delinquents, children of petty traders, but now they have hope, and not just hope, a future.

The Alaafin of Oyo and Ooni of Ife may have more money than this king, but in years to come, King Abolarin's impact will take him to the echelons of greatness. What if we also have many Northern Sultans and Emir engaging in this? All across history, change begins with just a man! Dare to live differently, making an impact. It is what we do with money and our other resources that counts, for money has no value in itself!

This man is planting seeds that will blossom in the future. In the nearest years, that town will be filled with successful and accomplished people. I love this. God bless the King. This is one man that fully has my respect. We should celebrate such a Nigerian! This king is a legend and posterity will never forget

PoliticsRe: Border Closure: Customs Rakes In N6 Billion Daily by shevi4mb(m): 3:00pm On Feb 19, 2020
Nigerian leaders are bunch of hypocrites, the customs support this closure because of what they gain between 2am and 4am daily. Seme border is smuggle in goods from 2am to 4am daily, they pay the Custom officers huge bribe, Money that's going into their personal pocket.

My main problem is, anytime they talk about the reason for border closure, they tend to leave out the reason they close border on their own citizens from 6pm to 6am daily. The immigration officers now demand bribe to allow a Nigerian Citizen with every legal rights and travel documents, cross into his own Country... A failed state indeed.

Muslims, please stop insulting Jesus Christ whenever these hypocrites insult Islam.
The best thing to do is ignore. These people want attention, probably depressed and seeking for a Painful way to End their lives...

Muslims know Jesus Christ, but 'they' have no idea what islam is, not to talk of who is Allah or the prophet... And they don't want to know.
Don't make the mistake they are making... You're enlightened.

IslamRe: Ruling On Using Toothpaste Whilst Fasting by shevi4mb(m): 11:45am On May 10, 2019
Scientifically, Chewing stick, no matter how dried will reactivate the chemical component of the stick when mixed with saliva. These chemical component will surely go down your throat willingly or not. Same with toothpaste. Please let us be Clean, God hates dirty attitudes, both spiritually and physically. Brush your teeth as many times as you can...as much as you can feel comfortable speaking to people and the comfort is mutual.

Tell me, how will you perform ablution without water not going down your throat, and we do these at least twice during the day of Ramadan.
So OP, that's my opinion. ALLAH KNOWS BEST

For those antagonist trying to mock or paint Islam bad, I hope you see your reward soon. We educate eachother here. Please, if you wish to learn, you're free to ask questions, but if you're here to mock, no one will reply or insult you. Gone are those days people fight online because of religion, with the situation in Nigeria, I think we have a lot to concentrate on than engaging lonely attention seekers.
