Hello MB family.
It is high time we had a Official Mercedes Benz Group on BBM or WhatsApp.
This is to afford us the opportunity to link up & interact easily while getting INSTANT feedback.
Similary, this is also germane to receiving solutions INSTANTLY to mechanical/electric problems when stuck or stranded.
I have observed the Peogout Thread(LION Family) & seen the great work Ikenna is doing.
The Lion family in Abuja hold meetings & discuss issues bothering on their Lions. This has really helped them.
The Mercedes Benz thread (STAR Family) we can do better & ought to set the pace.
This is a clarion call to the Elders; AUhanson, Eyop, Cne010, SmartChoice.
Long Live Mercedes Benz thread!!!
Long Live the STAR Family.
Car TalkRe: Why You Should Use 5w-20 , 5w-30 by shoppyanno(m): 3:23am On Sep 20, 2014
I'm not a Mechanical Engineer but to the best of my knowledge, every Automobile has a recommend Engine Oil specification given by its manufacturer.
5W20/5W30 is good, ONLY for autos that their manufacturers recommend such for.
It will be WRONG to use a 5W20/5W30 for a Mercedes Benz automobile when its Manufacturer recommends 0W40 Engine Oil Specification.
Anyone has a contrary opinion?
Car TalkRe: Nigeria Begins Implementation Of 35% Levy On Imported New Vehicles by shoppyanno(m): 2:57am On Sep 20, 2014
I'm not an economist. I'm talking from the common sense angle & these are my thoughts:

Growing our Local Industries is good because it will have multiplying effect; job creation etc.but increasing tarriffs without putting NECESSARY INFASTRUCTURE on ground will never grow the auto industry in Nigeria.

How CONSTANT is our ELECTRICITY SUPPLY especially to industrial estates?
What made MICHELINE & DUNLOP (trye manufacturers) leave NIGERIA?
One of the MAJOR EXCUSES, services providers MTN etc give for high tariff in Nigeria is, having to run their base station on desiel 24/7.
Without INFASTRUCTURES & CONDUSIVE BUSINESS ATMOSPHERE, I doubt if GIANT Auto Manufacturers like TOYOTA, MERCEDES BENZ, BMW & HONDA will come here.

QUALITY & STANDARD is another area the FG needs to FOCUS on with the LOCAL AUTO INDUSTRY.
Have our Made In Nigeria Cars been put to rigourous test?
I will prefer to buy a Tokunbo C- Class Mercedes Benz of 2002 for 1.5m than a Made in Nigeria Hyundai of 1.5m cos of DURABILITY.
Most Nigerian folks will always prefer importing their NEEDS as far as they can afford it cos they are sure of the quality of what they are buying.
For example, Electronics/Frigde/Freezer that are brought into Nigeria are Substandard. The same China that manufacutures products for Nigeria does same for UK & US but you can't compare that of the US with Nigeria cos of STANDARD.

How many UNITS of Peugeot 301, Hyundai & Innoson cars are on ground ready for sale to meet the demand of prospective car buyer? Similarly, are these motor parts available in the market (across the country) already?
That's assuming the prices are reasonable for the average Nigerian.

Which OFFICIAL & Convoy Automobile is the President/Vice President/Senate President/Governors using?
I expect them to use Innoson, 301 peuogeot, etc (Made in Nigeria Cars) at least to lead by EXAMPLE & show sincererity at boosting our LOCAL AUTO INDUSTRY

PULLING THE CART BEFORE THE HORSE, is what the FG has done so far. I believe this Increase in Tarrif is just to benefit a Cabal & not in the interest of the Masses.
Since Nigeria stopped importing Cement with the entrance of Dangote into the scene, as CEMENT PRICE dropped?

davidhoop: Is the 280 del for sale and what's d price
Guess its for sale. The paper pasted on the wind shield says so.
The MB was sighted at Freedom Park on Broad Street, Lagos Island last month.

CityNG: Nice, very nice.

I have a 67 and a 72, pic sbelow.

The car you featured is very special. It's a regular 250 that the factory installed a 4.5 liter engine instead of the 2.5 liter engine that it would have normally came with.

Are you the owner?

It's nice to finally see real autoists who appreciate real car instead of the latest whizzbang plastic crapola on the market grin
I'm not the owner. I saw it online, loved it & decided to share it here especially with Mercedes Benz fans like me.
Its a 280 SEL. I know not the year it was manufactured.
I have love for "Old Skool" autos & pray to acquire such a vintage MB before I go to be with the Lord. grin

I prefer the 1st one with alloy wheels. It looks neater & pleasant to the eye than the 2nd.
Just like my Oga @ Eyop said earlier, if the mechanical aspect is good, go for it. The rust issue seems to be common as I also have some rust patches by the drivers door of mine. All in all, that's a powerful machine you about acquiring

Car TalkRe: Nigeria OLX Is Full Of Fraudsters Beware (pictures) by shoppyanno(m): 11:28pm On Sep 10, 2014
Haven read diverse comments on the OLX saga, I wana share my personal experience not what I heard or was told. I recently bought my car based on an advert on OLX.

I saw 2 different adverts for the kinda car I wanted.
The 1st seller posted in May while the 2nd posted in August.
I decided to call the 2nd seller since his post was recent beliveing the 1st wld have sold his since his post was May.
The price the 2nd seller gave me & his rapport on phone wasn't encouraging.
My intution pushed me to call the first seller & see if the car was available & at what price.
I called & the car was still available & the price lower compared to the 2nd seller. I ended up talking with this man almost 40mins cos of his mannerism.
Meanwhile, the Car posted by the TWO sellers were the same & colour also. But the first seller had more pictures(10) than the 2nd (4).
I travelled down to Lagos to meet with the 1st seller who posted the car advert in May. He received me warmly & even told me to test drive the car without following me.
I test drove the car & liked it. So we talked about price & told him I saw exactly the same car also on OLX so he shld not do yanga with price.
He told me to show him the picture, and on sighting the picture, GUESS WHAT?
THE CAR POSTED BY THE 2ND SELLER IN AUGUST WAS THE SAME CAR I WAS PLANNING TO BUY FROM HIM.
He got the guys hone number called the guy up & pretened to be interested in buying the car & wanted to see the car. The guy now told him(first seller) to give him some minutes.GUESS WHAT?
The guy called the first seller (as in original ownerr)to know where the car is. That's how t the original owner "raked" for him & told him to pull the advert of OLX.
In conclusion I took my mechanic to the original owner's place, he tested the car & approved the car.

IT IS WORTHY TO NOTE THAT I DID THE FOLLOWING

1. I travelled down to see the car myself & meet the seller.
2. I test drove the car
3. Since the car was an American Spec, I did a CARFAX report on the car & all the info tallied with what the original owner gave me including MILEAGE
4 I took my Mechanic to assess the car.
5. I checked the the papers of the car to be sure its Original Custom papers & cleared @ TIN CAN
6. Paid, collected reciept & customs clearing papers & took the car away.
Car TalkRe: Mercedes Benz Thread by shoppyanno(m): 5:28pm On Sep 08, 2014
I left Lagos with full tank on a jourey to Ekiti which is 190 miles. By the time I arrived ekiti, I had half tank left.
Is the fuel consumption ok?

Secondly, some days ago I drove & on reaching 100km, the steering started vibrating so I did alignment & wheel balancing.

What I observed again was that when I'm on top speed, and needed to slow down the steering was vibratng but not as what it was initally.

While on my journey to Ekiti, I ran into a deep porthole on Lag/Ibadan Exp. After running into the porthole, I observed that when on speed (100- 160) & pressed the brake pedal to slow down, the streering vibration was so serious.

What is responsible for the vibration when slowing down from a top speed?

cne010: You won make we fine you? You finally got the w202 and didn't come to appease the gods with quality pics of the machine? Congrats man welcome to the club. Sorry about your instrument cluster light have you checked the fuse?

FSS means Flexible Service System I found this on the internet give it a try;
1. Turn electronic key in steering lock to position 2.

2. Within 4 seconds press button 0 twice.

3. The present status for days or distance is displayed. Within 10 seconds turn electronic key in steering lock to position 0.

4. Press and hold button 0, while turning electronic key in steering lock to position 2 again. The present status for days or distance is displayed once more. Continue ot hold button 0. After approx. 10 seconds a signal sounds, and the display shows 10,000 miles for approx. 10 seconds.

5. Release button 0.

I get as far as the end of step 4 but the signal does not sound after holding down the button 0 for 10 seconds.
*Uses hand to cover face* Bros no vex o. I humbly pay homage o. Thanks for the tips. I'll update you.

Happy New Month MB folks.
Still on the recommended Engine oil & Tramsmission Oil for Mercedes Benz. I was told I can use TOTAL 9000 Engine Oil bt kinda observed that it is a 5W-30. The viscosity of the recommended engine oil for Benz is 40.
Any1 wants to explain?
Secondly, which Transmission Oil brand that meets MB specification can one use?
Where can it be purchased without fear of buying a fake?
Car TalkRe: How Much Will It Cost Me To Get A 1999 C Class Neatly Used Or Toks And Bugt 500k by shoppyanno(m): 8:51pm On Aug 31, 2014
charly24: Hello NL want to get a Benz c class1999 modern to be precise maybe neatly used one or tok wots the price range and the efficency of dis ride pls gurus in the house assist me as per parts maintainance, fuel etc

Thanks
@ Charly. The C-Class 1999 model you talking about is also know as W202. The production started 1994 & ended 2000.
From my research, Its a very strong car- durable, rugged, reliable & combined with fuel effieciency.
There are different trims of the W202 namley, 180, 200, 220, 230 & 280.
They also come in variance like Elegance, Classic, Sports,Esprit & Kompressor.Eg(C200 Classic or C180 Elegance or C230 Kompressor)
1.The question is which of these trims do you want?
2.Mileage of a car & some other variables most times determine the price of a car especially tokunbo cars.
This means a C230 2000 model with 54000 miles may sell for the same price with a C230 2002 model which has 100,000miles
Similarly, a C230 Kompressor may be higher in price than a naturally aspirated(ordinary) C200
I shopped for one recently, so I'll give you price range. The 99 model C 180,200 aspirated engine (Toks) is around 850 - 880K (with reasonable mileage)
The 2000 model C230 Kompressor (clean Toks) is btw 1.1 - 1.2m.
Nigerian used of any of them just budget btw 450 - 550k on the average. Cld be more depending on how clean it is/ usage.
Go to this forum Car Talk / Reliability Of C180 and W202's IN GENERAL & read more on the C-class.
Car TalkRe: Mercedes Benz Thread by shoppyanno(m): 9:08pm On Aug 26, 2014
auhanson: Oh yeah! u are wetting my tongue.. u dont know how much i love those kompressor machines..A 4 cylinder kompressor,c230 delivers better horsepower, torque and economy than a c240 6 cylinder naturally aspirated stock engine by far. In that beast you can max out 289hp with an economy of about 20/31(city/hgw MPG) unlike c240 of 168hp with an economy of about 19/25(city/hgw MPG) of same model year. Infact you could almost hit the performance of a c320, just about 194hp. And then with the benefit of w203 gearbox equivalent, inwhich case instead of kickdown or downshift you simply tap to make tremendous overwhelming 'shoot out' , no vehicle can stand you while overtaking in this manner. I used a friends own, who just bought it newly and doesn't really understand the car. I was making nonsense of all the cars on the road while travelling to Bayelsa, each time i tap the transmission, our heads hits the headrest with the swiftest movement i have ever noticed, he finally asked me if it was a manual transmission. U need to feel that machine, it's a wonder 4 cylinder..
LoL @ Oga Hanson. You don use big oyinbo scatter my head.
1.Please can you explain how kickdown/downshift is done on a auto transmission of the Kompressor

2.How do I "TAP" to a lower gear, from say gear 5 on the auto transmission of the Kompressor when about to overtake?

3.How do I return back to the auto transmission after TAPPING?
Car TalkRe: Mercedes Benz Thread by shoppyanno(m): 3:42pm On Aug 25, 2014
auhanson: Abeg my guy, let him take that KOMPRESSOR, its an awful machine with such a gearbox, you can 'tap' 'tap' to move like jet. thats machine you've got there boy.
Oga Hanson, Long time o. Good to hear from you. I have taken & stuck to the Kompressor. I was told its a powerful machine. Can't wait to feel the BEAST
Car TalkRe: What Car Should A Young Man Get? by shoppyanno(m): 4:37pm On Aug 24, 2014
Life is about time, season & stages.
In my opinion, a 2008 Highlander will draw unnecessary attention for a man his age(24yrs) due to the kinda society we find ourselves.
In this present world we are MODESTY should be employed in all we do in order to avoid being victims of evil people.
If a 24yr old uses a 2009 highlander now, when he is 30yrs what will he use? At 40 nko?
Let him thread softly as he still has a long way to go in life
Car TalkRe: Mercedes Benz Thread by shoppyanno(m): 11:03pm On Aug 23, 2014
Eyop: Individual taste differs so another may prefer the W203 depending on the condition. You know some people don't like anything oldskool and prefers something more modern but like i said, taste is the factor here. But my brother the W203 apart from road condition of the User,is still da bomb smiley. I still remember when i drove w203 2005 C240 from Lagos to Uyo with the Harman Kardon sound system inside,i never felt stressed at all oooh so me i still love the W203 sha.
Different Strokes for Different Folks. Like you said, its a matter of taste & choice. For me, I'm tilted towards the old skool.
The first thing that always come to my mind when looking out for a vehicle is , "How rugged & relaible it is before any other thing"
Car TalkRe: Mercedes Benz Thread by shoppyanno(m): 10:47pm On Aug 23, 2014
Thanks @Oga Eyo & Cne for you objective answers. Someone was flaunting a W203 from Germany@ 1.2m just cleared 2day. The fabric seats put me off though I was almost falling for it o angry
I'll stick to my W202 jeje. Lol
Car TalkRe: Mercedes Benz Thread by shoppyanno(m): 10:26pm On Aug 23, 2014
I hail thee @ Oga Eyop. Which is the most rugged & reliable?
W202 or W203?
I'd appreciate answers from folks who have used/driven these models
Car TalkRe: Mercedes Benz Thread by shoppyanno(m):
I have always loved the W202 especially the 2000 model & will always love it. From my online research, the W202 is about the best C-Class ever built.
Some consumer reviews even went as condeming the Leather seats of the W203 as inferior to that of W202.
Also the turning radius of the wheels were also in focus.most consumers still rated the W202 over the 203.
In terms of Body structure, I still prefer the W202 to 203.
The W202 is Indeed a CLASSIC.

Anyone wants to dispute this?

Car TalkRe: Mercedes Benz Thread by shoppyanno(m): 10:54pm On Aug 21, 2014
Eyop: Am glad you understood my point. Mileage is number 1 factor then other condition follows. So when you hear people say i bought a W202 for #800k and you got yours for #1.1million,don't panic because you don't know the condition of the other. My taste can be completely different from the other person's own.
Oga Eyop I no still see ya number. Abeg flash me cos I will need a mechanic in lagos to help me check it.
Car TalkRe: Mercedes Benz Thread by shoppyanno(m): 10:46pm On Aug 21, 2014
Eyop: No one is saying he cannot get a W203 for 1.3 but certain factors are to be considered. In the USA mileage determines the price of a vehicle and that's the reason why you will be surprised when someone tells you he bought the same car the other got for a higher price. You cannot expect a car with a mileage of 80,000 to be the same with 150,000. You can browse the below websites to confirm things yourself:

Germany:www.autoscout24.com
www.mobile.de

You can as well check some USA websites to confirm things yourself.
Folks from my research, factors like mileage, the condition of the car etc determines the price of a car regardless of the model
My friend in the US bought this same W202 2000 model C230 Kompress for 6700 dollars. The car is very neat with just 54000 miles. I uploaded some of the pics of the said car

Car TalkRe: Mercedes Benz Thread by shoppyanno(m): 10:35pm On Aug 21, 2014
Eyop: I hope you got the number? Had to modify.
Oga Eyop I no see ya number o. Resend am
Car TalkRe: Mercedes Benz Thread by shoppyanno(m): 10:15pm On Aug 21, 2014
Eyop: Guy the ride is Ok if it's mechanically sound. i can give you German car websites for you to visit and check out the cost to buy one there excluding shipping. So when you add total cost including clearing, then you will arrive at the price that way you should be able to know if what you intend buying is ok or not. But if the ride is mechanically sound as per confirmation by your mechanic, then negotiate for #1.1million.
Its was shipped from America. Its an American Specs
