Doubtlessly, Maurice Tillet was a very brave person who refused to be put down by his physical deformity; in a sense, I think he would have liked knowing the cartoon Shrek was modeled after him… after all there’s a positive message to this cartoon, which closely resonates Tillet’s own legacy of unwavering self-esteem and upbeat personality. He was the kind of person who learned to make lemonade, rather than complaining for getting only lemons out of life; his example should be inspirational for us all.

Tillet fought till the end – which arrived in 1954 when he was 51 years old – and he died with a heart attack. Not long before he died, a friend of his asked him to get a lifecast, and Tillet agreed. There were actually three casts, one of which ended up in Iowa (International Wrestling Museum); the second mask went to his friend, and the third one was sent to the York Barbell Museum, where it would allegedly be used as a model to design the popular cartoon character.

He was a close friend to entrepreneur Patrick Kelly, whose home in Braintree (Massachusetts) Tillet regularly visited, for their routinely game sessions; both of them were enthusiast chess players.

Maurice Tillet reached the title of world champion of the American Wrestling Association in the 1st of August 1944, after defeating Steve “Crusher” Casey. Tilled had a few trademark moves, including the “Palm Strike” (his finishing move) and the “Bearhug”. Even though he was nick-named by shallow minded people as the “Freak Ogre of the Ring”, he was actually best known as “The French Angel“.

Tillet was born in 1903, and as a teenager he manifested a rare disease called acromegaly, which causes his bones to grow uncontrollably. As result his body was disfigured, and he turned into what people back then referred to as “freak show”; do you think that put him down? Think again! He headed just the opposite of down, by going to the United States to actually take advantage of his condition, by turning into a pro wrestler called the “freak ogre of the ring”.

This may come to you as a surprise or a silly joke, but it’s nothing but the truth.

"We"? I don't recall  you being Nigerian. I also don't know about this claim of Nigerians celebrating being named the happiest people on the planet. All I've heard from fellow Nigerians, in real life and on this board is disbelief and mockery of that claim. The thing is that Nigerians in Nigeria (outside of Lagos) are friendly to strangers and to foreigners especially and probably exude happiness and confidence to foreigners just from their disposition, rather than their actual stance on the progress of their country.

I quite agree with the bolded.   It is even more so when you realise how much funding is needed o execute programmes like this. It is not a coincidence that there few countries with viable Space Programmes.

So typical of the Nigerian Government to choose the easy and most expensive way out.

Do you know the funny thing? Patience Jonathan, by her very 'ordinariness', identifies with, and has been taken to more, by the Nigerian people, than a million Oxbridge Trained politicians and first ladies.

The man and woman on the street can identify with  Patience Jonathan in a way most politicians can only dream of.

I think she is President Jonathan's greatest asset.

The WORST MISTAKE he can make is to take these pampered westernized goats who make up the vocal internet minority, seriously, by relegating her to the background as we move forward.

So please, the Nigerian PEOPLE want MORE of Dame Patience Jonathan.

Her voice is the voice of the ordinary Nigerian woman, devoid of superficial, self-conscious appurtenances.

In  many ways, she is the first REAL FIRST LADY we've ever had.

There is no way you can justify the First Lady's poor grasp of the English language. How would you like to come back one day and see your daughter speaking like her? What is the point of having English lessons if it would be better to speak like 'ordinary Nigerians'? She might as well give it up and start using the pidgin instead.
For a President who prides himself with being progessive and modern, this is hardly the way to go.

I do however sympathise with him as it seems he has no choice in this matter. The fact still remains the our current First Lady is not the embodiment of the modern Nigerian women.

I think if we will rate the ethnic group spoiling, tarnishing, blackmailing, and destroying the image of Nigeria, in "my opinion" here they are:

1) Number 1 are Igbo Peoples in diaspora; India, China, US, Britain all most everywhere,

2) Yoruba

3) Hausa  

4) Others.

If you want to argue with my point above, please be polite and post reference to your claims, then I will assume you are literate and educationally-wise intellectual Nigerian, else otherwise.
