tomakint: Your brand of economics must have been handed over to you by your forefathers and not what our learned Adam Smith, Keynes coined for this modern world. Common sense should inform you that high price of oil is always a major boost to our huge forex reserve. You keep harping on demand and supply as if you are talking to kindagarten kids. What is Nigeria producing that is internationally recognized? Please don't mention oil, I need a commodity or an innovation of course none. Need I tell you that Nigeria is a consuming economy that thrives more on monetary policies of its government and this is where your uncle Buhari lost it. The fact is, Muhammadu Buhari's rudderless monetary policy and not a drop in oil prices is responsible for Nigeria's current woes. Impossible to take a free market economy, turn it into a command economy because one lacks critical thinking capacity and expect different results - no way. Incompetences, Cluelessness........wrong policies, all these destroyed our economy......no thanks to apc led government. I am tired of educating kids. Demand and supply mostly affects a producing economy more and not as you imagined for a consuming economy as Nigeria. As usual, sprinkle some irrelevant stats around while you aim jibe at me. @bold part, talk sense bros . . . So you mean oil isn't a product? I tell you, age is nothing but a number. You are irredeemable. |

tomakint: ........ask yourself how much Obj inherited from the military in 1999 (about $3.8 billion) how much was oil then (around $9 per barrel) yet dollar vs naira was stabilized and no recession of this magnitude you wanna know how? He went on a rebranding of Nigeria to the outside world that is, he opened Nigeria to the frontiers of business globally and gradually our oil, telecommunications, bureau de change, capital market, maritime, agriculture and other sectors started picking up. I ask you now, what has your Buhari done so far to fight this recession? You know what he did something your lots are fond of doing and still doing, blame Good luck Jonathan. Obasanjo had all the excuses in the world to blame Abdulsalam, he never did but did something reasonable, engaged the best brains at his disposal to turn the tide. Learn and be wise. What will blind hate or ignorance profit any liberal soul? The price of dollar is simply a function of its demand and supply. FG has been the one supplying 85% of $forex. Commonsense should tell the vile amongs us that once the govt's major dollar source - oil sales - suffers a dip in volume or price, our dollar supply goes down and demands further pushes dollar price upward. Those irrelevant stats you bandied up there won't be complete without you stating our recurrent expense as of 1999. |

It easy for any pained soul to foam in the mouth about dollar rate of N504/$. Our system of defending the dollar rate with dollar reserve is not feasible if our dollar supply via oil sales isn't high. How much did GEJ govt earn asides oil sales? |

My own theory: The lesser the transactions available the more profit people seek for the few transaction they can perform thus driving commodity price up . . . There is also the dollar angle. Even local produce are not exempted from the dollar influence. Petrol for transportation of goods is tied to dollar cos we import it, fertilizer too, insecticides too . . . |

Unfortunately I don't have her permission to share her story but I can understand what this young man is saying based on what I have heard There are families that sacrifice a child's success/glory for the parents and other kids to succeed ,that child becomes the one with the most potential and with the least results and it appears as if he/she isn't doing enough meanwhile he/she is only being remote controlled via black magic.....

AshiwajuFoward: Lagos does NOT collect any revenue from import duty, the FG collects that. Infact, all the revenue generated from the Lagos ports (sea and air) and even the ones customs generate from her land borders ALL go to the federal govt. Really? So you mean Lagos gets nothing from imported goods? Please enlighten me. . . |
Politics › Re: Lagos Needs $30bn To Execute 30 Capital Projects In Five Years by Sibrah: 2:33pm On Feb 07, 2017 |
Statsocial: author=Sibrah post=53496653]Are you saying federal allocation equals Nigeria's economy? Stop being ignorant. If Nigeria stops importing rice, flour, petrol today Lagos losses half its import duty revenue. Lagos is dependent on Nigeria. I don't know what you are trying to prove but it certainly doesn't make sense to me. First, Lagos does not take import duties, I believe that is taken by fg. Secondly, I believe Lagos has the highest number of middle class income earners meaning if Lag were to be a country, the import duty it would receive from importations would still be high. The VAT from products in Lagos used by Lagosians is still about 56% of the entirecountry's VAT yet Lagos does not collect VAT, what about the CI Tax?-that goes to the FG also. I would say it this way, the fg is dependent on Lagos not the other way round. However, Since you believe Lagos isn't self sufficient, could you pls tell us what it means for a state to be self sufficient. My understanding of the whole arrangement is such that Lagos benefits from port activities. May not be import duty but then but I strongly believe they get some form of revenue from importation asides tax. That way, the more the imports by Nigerians outside Lagos, the more money Lagos gets. I know Lagos has some industries and lots of headquarters from where it gets tax. I may be wrong though. |

Are you saying federal allocation equals Nigeria's economy? Stop being ignorant. If Nigeria stops importing rice, flour, petrol today Lagos losses half its import duty revenue. ITbomb: Some of these instances where government's actions have been counter-productive to the economy are still fresh in our memory:
1. Delay in the appointment of ministers and setting up of the executive council for 6 months after inauguration. 2. No definite economic policy statement for almost a year. 3. Scandals and embarrassing Budget 2016 scandal which affected its performance. 4. The unwise hold on an impossible exchange rate in the face of dwindling government revenue. 5. Seeming lopsided appointments and persecution of political opponents in the name of fighting corruption. 6. Unguarded statements about official marginalization of a section of the country because of voting pattern (97% vs 5%). 7. Uncertainty in the President capacity to perform his official functions.
These 7 Points are valid indicators that caused many investors to withhold investments into the country.

zendy: The problem with 'confederation' is that it is more of a SE/SS thing. All the major tribes in the SE/SS are confederations. Igbos still remain a confederation of clans to this day. Ijaws reman a confederation of clans to this day. The entire Akwa-Cross area remains a confederation of clans and linguistic neigbours to this day.
However, Yorubas and Hausas are 'empire builders' who find the idea of 'confederation' a strange one. Thats why both of them united to fight Ojukwu to remove it
Eventually, for Nigeria to have any chance of surviving, it must be run as a confederation or a confederacy. Did they have to unite? Yorubas n Hausas where part of Nigeria already and remained during the war. Did present day Delta, Edo, and Kogi also have to unite with Nigeria or they were part of it? |
