Members of the House of Representatives yesterday criticised President Goodluck Jonathan for travelling to Brazil for the United Nations conference on climate change when hundreds of Nigerians are being killed and maimed in several cities, saying he abdicated his duty. The members stated this while debating a motion sponsored by Rep Yakubu Barde (PDP, Kaduna) who came under matters of urgent national importance over the Sunday bombings of three churches in Kaduna State and the reprisal attacks that followed. The legislators unanimously voted summoning President Jonathan to come back home from Brazil. The House resolution invited the President and the security chiefs to address the House at a closed- door session on the insecurity situation in the country. Representative Emma-nuel Jime (PDP, Benue) said: “There is an abdication of responsibility on the part of the President. So far what we have is a statement by his spokesman to say that he is too engaged with state issues than to talk about Boko Haram,” Rep. Jime added. Minority Leader Femi Gbajabiamila (ACN, Lagos) also criticised the President for contravening the oath of office he swore on May 29th 2011 by travelling “to far away to Brazil to engage in climate conference when a state capital is under siege for hours.” “We must begin to look elsewhere for solution, drastic situations calls for drastic measures. We have power of oversights not only on the National Security Adviser but also on the President himself”, the Minority Leader said. In her submission, Rep. Olajumoke Okoya-Thomas (ACN, Lagos), said if the President knows that he can’t handle the situation ‘he should step down’. “We should issue marching order to the President in view of the security situation,” she said. Rep. Jerry Manwe (PDP, Taraba) said: “Is Mr. President scared? Is the IGP scared? Are there some people that cannot be arrested? If the President knows who is behind Boko Haram he should go after them otherwise nobody should come and tell us that they are on top of the situation”. “Ali Modu Sheriff is today walking the street of Nigeria, Jonathan must now demonstrate that he has the will power to handle it, he can no longer be telling us that this is a phenomenon. He said even in his cabinet there are Boko Haram symphatisers but it means that he is the only person who has the custody of information about their sponsors,” Jime said. Speaking shortly after the motion was passed, Speaker Aminu Waziri Tambuwal lamented that he was quoted out of context when he issued statement on the Sunday bomb blast and reprisal attacks in Kaduna state through his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Malam Imam Imam saying, “my stance has always been known on issue of terrorism; I have always spoken against the perpetrators, therefore I crave the indulgence of those desperately looking for what to use to smear my name to please leave me alone”. Although no date was set for the appearance of the President before the House, this would be the first time that the House has summoned the President since assuming office in February 2010 after he was declared Acting President by a resolution of the both chambers of the National Assembly. Meanwhile three opposition parties; Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) also condemned the President Jonathan for embarking on the Brazil trip while Yobe and Kaduna States when dozens of Nigerians wee being killed and maimed. ACN said it is a sign of incompetence and confused leadership. |
dailytrust.com.ng/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=164970%3Afg-must-implement-subsidy-report--nlc-bribery-allegations-diversionary&catid=2%3Alead-stories&Itemid=8 |
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the opposition Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) yesterday warned that the allegations involving the chairman of the House of Representatives ad hoc committee on fuel subsidy management, Rep. Farouk Lawan, must not be allowed to scuttle the implementation of the committee’s report. The two organisations said whether or not the chairman or even the entire members of the House committee solicited for, and received gratifications, the final report still contains names and details enough for thorough and transparent investigation to go on. The controversial House Committee report made startling revelations of large-scale fraud of more than N1 trillion in the subsidy regime between 2009 and December last year. The report laid much of the blame for the irregularities on the NNPC, whose board is chaired by Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke, the former board of the PPPRA chaired by Ahmadu Ali, former national chairman of the Peoplers Democratic Party (PDP) and Zenon Petroleum and Gas Limited owned by business mogul Femi Otedola who is now at the centre of the bribery allegation involving the sum of $ 600,000. A press statement signed by Acting President of NLC Comrade Kiri Mohammed said, as serious asit is, the ongoing accusations and counter accusations between Rep. Lawal and the chairman of Zenon Mr Otedola over allegations of bribery “should not be used to divert attention on the implementation of the report of the committee.” The Labour leader said the NLC believes that Nigerians should not be overburdened with an issue that should strictly be the burden of appropriate security agencies, particularly the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). “The report, which has been submitted to the executive arm, must be subjected to proper investigation and prosecution of all those indicted,” the Labour lerader said. He added that “we saw in the report as a confirmation of our position. We have, since the mid eighties, insisted that subsidy do not exist in the petroleum sector, rather it has always been a conduit for a few cronies of successive governments with interest in the petroleum sector to siphon public funds for their private businesses. “For us, we believe criminal matters as serious as bribery should be what the police or EFCC should take very serious interest in and not politicize the issue through unnecessary diversionary tactics. We therefore urge the EFCC to implement the report of the committee, which President Jonathan was reported to have forwarded to the agency NOW.” In a similar statement, the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) expressed deep concern at the timing of the allegation to coincide with the period that Nigerians expect the government to be dealing with the issues raised in the report. The statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, yesterday pointed out that public reaction to the report clearly indicated that the committee had carried out a thorough job in exposing the massive mismanagement and the sleaze involved in the fuel subsidy issue. ‘’Therefore, the allegation of bribery making the rounds should not be used as a reason not to allow all those indicted by the report to have their day in court,’’ ACN said. The party said while the bribery allegation must be thoroughly investigated and anyone found culpable must be dealt with according to the laws of the land. ACN said any attempt to cast aspersion on the report, to say it has been tainted by the bribery allegation, should be resisted by the House of Representatives. ‘’We are concerned that this case is eerily similar to what happened after the House’s probe into the $16 billion reportedly spent in the power sector during the Obasanjo regime. Instead of implementing the report of the committee, the man who presided over the probe was slammed with corruption charges. Till today, that report was never implemented and Nigeria remains in darkness,’’ the statement said. |

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo is to appear before the House of Representatives Committee on Ethics and Privileges on June 28 over his recent utterances in which he referred to members of the National Assembly as armed robbers and rogues, Daily Trust learnt yesterday. Obasanjo had in May at the Fourth Annual Conference of the Academy for Entrepreneur Studies Nigeria (AES) at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) in Lagos, said that “there are more rogues and armed robbers in the State Assemblies and the National Assembly”. The House of Representatives asked its committee on ethics to investigate the former president’s assertion, with Speaker Aminu Waziri Tambuwal hinting that Obasanjo will be invited to defend himself before the lawmakers. Speaking to Daily Trust yesterday on the telephone, committee chair Rep. Gambo Dan Musa 9CPC, Katsina), said although they have since received verbal referral for the assignment, they were officially communicated about the exercise on Thursday. “When we resume next week on the 21st of June, we will meet as a committee to look at the modalities of the investigation and we hope to commence in a week time,” Dan Musa said. The probe was instituted after a motion on matter of personal privileges was raised by the House Deputy Minority Leader, Suleiman Kawu Sumaila (ANPP, Kano) who said, “the former President called us rogues and armed robbers. But I am not an armed robber neither am I a rogue.” http://dailytrust.com.ng/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=164754:obasanjo-to-appear-before-reps-june-28&catid=1:news&Itemid=2 |

Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, the Registrar of JAMB, said on Monday that the board would soon start to monitor universities to ensure that they complied with 2011/2012 admission regulations. Ojerinde made the statement when the Senate Committee on Education visited the office of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Bwari on Monday as part of its oversight functions. He said the 60:40 per cent ratio admission for science and arts courses must be adhered to by the universities. Ojerinde said although most universities attributed the delay in admissions to fuel subsidy removal, “the board would still monitor the admission processes.’’ He said the board would start monitoring from state universities to ensure strict compliance with ratio and quota regulations. The registrar added that all applicants would soon get the opportunity to be admitted to any Nigerian university, although not their first or second choices. He said this was to prevent them from staying without admission as their courses of choice could be studied in other universities. Ojerinde announced that there were no more special centres as the board had abolished all special centres since 2008. He added that centres for examination increased from 2,872 to 3,052 in 2012 with improved security. He said 1 per cent of the overhead cost of the board would be devoted to buying of books, stressing that the Test Development Unit of the board was purely academic. Sen. Uche Chukwumerije, the Chairman of the committee, urged the board to adhere to the timetable for admissions. He urged the board to make judicious use of funds allocated to it. (NAN) In Brief, This Monitoring will Stop Admission Runsing and any Similar Issues + Jamb is making a Move for any Candidates to be able to Apply for any University Post UME Exam even if you did not choose them as your First or Second Choice *Cheers* |
