Why Are Nigerians So Obsessed
With Religion?
I have often wondered if Karl Marx
had a vision of present day Nigeria
when he postulated that religion is
the opium of the masses
Seriously,Nigeria is probably the
most religious nation on earth.
Every nook and cranny is dotted
with spires,domes and turrets.
Churches and Mosques undulate to
calls to prayer and evangelical
music.A pilgrimage to Mecca or
Jerusalem is a badge of religious
devotion sought after with great
zeal alongside the much needed
appellations like
Bishop,Pastor,Alhaji,Deacon etc.
Today in Nigeria being born again
is now socially acceptable and even
politically correct in certain
quarters.as a matter of fact,there
are more churches and mosques
in Nigeria today than industries
and schools put together (disprove
me if you dare)
One would expect with this spread
of churches,mosques and prayer
houses that there should be an
accompanying growth in morals in
the society but alas this is not the
case.The religious boom has been
paralleled by a growth of a far less
desirable kind.A decline in moral
values creating an intriguing
spectacle of more religion and less
morality.Take Nigeria's abysmal
rating on the global corruption
index or the uncontrollable levels
of insecurity for instance and
paradoxically compare it with its
rating as the most religious nation
on earth.There is a profound
dissonance between the spread of
religion and the moral decline that
has promoted corruption from a
malaise confined to the epochal
heights of governance to a full
blown social plague.For all the
religious fervour in the nation,faith
has little or no social expression
But why is this important at all?
Like Nairalanders are wont to ask.
In truth,religion has become
Nigeria's greatest problem.A
religious movement can develop a
narcissistic obsession with its own
mythology.Its adherents can
become blinded by a creed of
materialistic self involvement to the
problems of a society which they
are meant to heal.Religion as we
have come to know it today,for the
most part,has become an
impediment to culture change.Its
ways and its means have become
obsolete.
At the risk of sounding off,let me
pause here but not before I state
that the Nigerian religious
establishment is ripe for a
reformation as is the society as a
whole. The much touted recovery
envisaged in the political and
economic spheres cannot be
attained without a recovery of
values.A reform of existing
religious strains could be the much
needed springboard for a mass
mobilisation of civil society to
protest the many ills plaguing our
society

villages are having "a shocking but
fanatics jubilating" and youths
driving bikes recklessly as if its
Sallah celebration.
All Mai shayi joints are full with
smiling faces of people who are
delighted in ignorance that a
brother died, that a governor who
have giving leadership his best, a
man that in honestly have excelled
more than any governor in the
North today, simply because he is
not one of us.
He is a Christian, and one of our
own, a Muslim brother will replace
him as the state new governor.
This is a big shame and quite
embarrassing to an average God
fearing Muslim, who is aware that
life and death is only in the hands
of Allah most compassionate.

One of the victims of the
October 5 lynching at
Omukiri Community, Aluu in
Rivers State, Ugonna Obuzor,
18, has been laid to rest. He
was buried today in Ahoada,
Port Harcourt.
Ugonna, Lloyd, Tekena and
Chiadika were
undergraduate students of
the University of Port
Harcourt who were cut
down in their prime in a
gruesome way by a mob
who wrongly suspected they
were robbers –
investigations later revealed
they were victims of a false
accusation.

A prosecution witness in the trial
of Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume
yesterday contradicted himself
when he read to the court an
International Mobile Equipment
Identity (IMEI) number of a
mobile phone which belongs to
Ndume that was different from
the digits he gave when he
testified on Tuesday.
The witness, Aliyu Usman, a
forensic examiner attached to
the State Security Service (SSS), on
Tuesday told the court that the
last four digits of the Nokia E7
ended with 3050, but when
asked to read out the IMEI
yesterday, Usman confirmed that
the last four digits were 3055.
On Wednesday, Usman told the
court that there were 73
communications between the
Nokia E7 with the IMEI 3050,
which allegedly belongs to
Ndume and the convicted
spokesperson of the Boko Haram
sect, Ali Sanda Umar Konduga,
who allegedly owns the Nokia
2700 which has 9226 as the last
four digits of its IMEI.
Usman has told the court that in
the cause of analyzing two
mobile phones given to him by
the chairman of the Special
Investigation Panel (SIP), James
Ene Izi, it was discovered that the
duo had exchanged text
messages, multi media messages
and placed voice calls between
October 3, 2011 and November
3, 2011.
He said report of the findings as
well as the call data records were
burnt in three different DVDs and
forwarded to the SIP chairman.
Ndume’s counsel, Rickey Tarfa
(SAN), has objected to the DVDs
being admitted in evidence, but
the court admitted same
yesterday.
Justice Gabriel Kolawale
adjourned till February 7 and 11,
2013 for continuation of trial.
Ndume is standing trial on
terrorism-related charges before
an Abuja Federal High Court.

I just remembered when I was a
born again, how we used to give
testimony and regarded any
seemingly positive thing that
happened to us as miracle.....I cant
help but wonder why with all the
miracles we hear on Tv and radio
by these jetvangelist, so many
people are still diseased, so many
are in penury, so many are still
receiving hard knocks from the
school of life....
The truth is most of the things our
pastors brag about as miracles are
really not miracles..... they are not
miracles at all....
Getting a good job is no miracle,if
our government provided a
favourable environment.
Getting a visa wont be a miracle if
our country was working,
Healing diseases wont be much of
a miracle if we had a good
healthcare system,
Promotion in your work place
wont be a problem if there was no
tribalism & nepotism,
Rising high and excelling in your
chosen field wont be a problem if
our government was working,
There wont be any need to regard
safe journey as miracles if our
roads, airways and waterways was
well coordinated,
Escape from kidnappers, armed
robbers, boko haram etc wont be
a miracle if our security system
worked.....
You dont need miracles to live a
decent life, you need organization
